“If you do not want to come to us, we will come to you” seemed to be the message a large number of residents from Kgautswane (between Ohrigstad and Alverton), tried to convey when they marched and protested against service delivery in front of the Greater Tubatse Municipality offices in Burgersfort on Monday. Protesters were loaded in Kgautswane from early in the morning and bused to Burgersfort under the supervision of Leboeng and Ohrigstad Police. In Burgersfort the Crime Combating Unit of the Police in Polokwane took over the supervising role. Although rowdy, the large group was peaceful and no problems were experienced. Very convenient for them they did not have to do anything to set the atmosphere as a tyre was already burning in front of the municipal gates when they arrived (thanks to the striking municipal employees who quietly went on with their own business, not delivering services, next to the Kgautswane marchers in the new municipal garden). The large ‘delegation’ from Kgautswane incidently left behind several hundred other residents who could not find space on the buses, had a momerandum to hand over to the Mayor, Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa. In the memorandum they demand inter alia the immediate resignation of the embattled ward councillor of Ward 24, Cllr Joseph Mohlala, who recently appeared in court more than once for allegedly toting a gun. They also demand electric water pumps to alleviate the reticulation problems in their area, RDP houses should according to them be allocated to needy deserving families, the tarring of the main road from Ohrigstad through Kgautswane and Alverton to Burgersfort, the upgrading of roads leading to cemetaries and the fencing of cemetaries, the upgrading of abandoned sport fields and the electrification of Mokutung village. Aoccrding to the memorandum, the residents of Ward 24 demand action within 14 days. If there is no reaction, they threaten to get support from other wards in the municipality to render the Greater Tubatse Municipality ungovernable. Cllr Mamekoa duly alighted from the municipal offices, and formally received the memorandum from the chairman of the Kgautswane Crises Committee, Mr Hendrik Coetzer (photograph left). The Mayor told the crowd that their grievances will be looked into by the municipality. The crowd then peacefully made a start to return to Kgautswane to report back to those they left behind.

Still striking after four days Labour unions Samwu and Imatu continued with their municipal strike when the Platinum Gazette went to the presses yesterday. In Greater Tubatse Municipality, the strike was going very peaceful, with employees picketing in front of the municipal offices’ gate in Burgerfort for the most part of days, going on lunch etc. as usual. On Monday debris from refuse bags was strewn in Eddie sedibe street and a tyre was lit while employees singed and danced. While Imatu has indicated that it may sign the South African Local Government Association’s revised increase offer of 13%, Samwu refuses. It says it will continue striking until the employer gives in to its members 15% pay rise demand. Labour federation, Congress of South African Trade Unions in Gauteng said it will extend the Samwu strike to all public service workers if Salga does not respond positively to municipal workers demands by today. The only time during the past week the strikers protested were when the Police decided to put out the burning tyre when the Mayor was speaking to the protesters from Kgautswane (photograph left).. The uses of the Vuvuzela seem to have no end, not only can it terrify the pants off an overseas soccer team, it can also stir a fire (left), while the strikers were duly informed by the Police that their space was to be invaded and their burning tyre about to be hijacked by protesters from Kgautswane (bottom).

To outsource service delivery or not? While municipal workers went on strike this week many towns became filthy with uncollected refuse and broken bottles. Other services also fell behind and in some areas residents stayed away from the streets as protesters sometimes brought their point across by burning tyres and displaying threatening behaviour. We asked our readers whether they felt the municipal strike affected them this week? We also asked whether they felt that outsourcing certain areas of service delivery, such as refuse removal is a good thing? In Burgersfort this specific area of service delivery is outsourced and waste collection continued through the week, regardless of the strike.

Give your opinion on the subject. SMS it to 073 416 5119

Mnr.

Mr Cedric Maedimola said: “It bothers me too much this strike. They should deliver and not march. They should stop outsourcing - they pay contractors millions while government should provide”.

Mnr.

Mr Joseph Mohlala said: “Outsourcing is a good thing. Now things like refuse removal can go ahead, otherwise we’ll sit in a filthy town”.

Ms Yvonne Mafolo said: “It’s not good when they strike. They are wasting government property. They must not outsource. They must rather do it themselves”.

Mr Khomotso Morena said: “It’s not good because they take things and throw it on the street. It is not removed by the contractors”.

Me.

Feedback on last week’s subject: To strike or not? Is strike action the way to go in current economic conditions? Anonymous said: “Yes,people must strike if they are not satisfied because it is the only way to be heard”.

Left: Mr Innocent Gugushe said: “It’s not good because it is encouraging other people to go on strike and when they strike we lack services”.

‘Loose feet’ for Calvin 50 learners from Calvin College in Burgersfort and their teachers travelled to Pretoria and Johannesburg during the past weekend for an educational cultural trip, as well as to administer the Word of God. The learners left the school on Friday for a visit to the National Zoological Gardens (Pretoria Zoo). What made this visit special is that they visited the gardens after nightfall, doing the so-called night walk of the zoo, getting the chance to see more of animals’ nocturnal habits. The group stayed over on friday and on Saturday took to the streets, visiting several malls and shopping centres. Learners in the gruop who are members of JC4CC (Jesus Christ for Calvin College) made use of the opportunity to spread the Word among the people they met. The highlight of the trip followed later in the day when they attended the Johannesburg Civic Theatre where they watch the stage production of Footloose. After the performance they were met by the director and some of the actors in the show to make it an unbelievable experience.
