olidays in Austria. People all over the world say that this country is synonymous with culture. Every summer culture does indeed flourish impressively. In almost every village the doors of a small theatre or stage open every evening, the list of events taking place in the cities throughout the country is very long. In fact it
would probably be possible to encircle the earth with this piece of paper. It is not only theatre that gives the country a festive appearance but also the many concerts and exhibitions, dance performances and readings. Events are not dominated by an austere and sonorous educational tone, it’s much more a case of light cheerful enjoyment, the combination of artistic quality with good food and drink that is unique in Austria. Imaginative museums and other cultural institutions have thought up special programmes so that young and very young guests can become acquainted with the creations of the spirit and of the muses. A holiday in Austria does not mean just playing around in meadows or wading barefoot through streams but will bring the first encounter with a world of inspiration. A very warm welcome. I wish you a festive holiday in Austria! Yours sincerely, Petra Stolba

Joseph Haydn. 2009 is the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death. To mark the occasion, Haydn’s oeuvre – from oratorios to symphonies – will be interpreted by leading orchestras and singers, like the English Chamber Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music, Thomas Quasthoff and many others. The “Haydn Festival” at Esterházy Palace features a varied programme throughout the year, culminating on 31 May – the date of Haydn’s death – with a simultaneous performance of Haydn's “Creation” throughout the world. At its opening on 4 April, the “Sound of Easter” Festival in Vienna will honour the great master with a concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic under Riccardo Muti. Nikolaus Harnoncourt will be conducting at the Theater an der Wien when Haydn’s best known opera “Il Mondo della Luna” is performed there on 5 December. www.haydn2009.net

The enormous sandstone setting of the Roman quarry offers an imposing openair stage for opera. Verdi’s opera “Rigoletto” will be on the programme in 2009. Things are even more laid-back in Wiesen, also in Burgenland: every year tens of thousands of fans travel here for the “Sunsplash” open-air event and the Wiesen Jazz Festival. The poolbar Festival in Feldkirch is a comparatively small event by comparison, but all the more exclusive as a result. The venue is a disused indoor swimming pool – and music festivals are held in many different places.

The Mozart Ensemble plays a carefully selected programme for you containing both popular pieces and great works by famous composers like Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Beethoven.
assical music in the Orangery of Schönbrunn Palace. Schönbrunn was of special significance to Mozart, as it was here that he performed as a child together with his sister Nannerl, to the great delight of Empress Maria Theresa. The spirit of Mozart is also present in the Orangery of the palace: the composer himself conducted the première of his singspiel "The Impresario" in this baroque jewel in the year 1786. Today the world-famous “Schönbrunn Palace Concerts” are given in the Orangery at Schönbrunn. At these concerts the celebrated Schönbrunn Palace Orchestra Vienna takes its audiences back to the golden age of Mozart and Strauss, accompanied by song and dance. Experience the symbiosis of ancient court tradition and modern convenience at the world cultural heritage of Schönbrunn.

n summer, when Burgenland becomes a festival region, Raiding is there with its Franz Liszt Festival. The annual Lisztiade focuses on the versatile personality of the virtuoso pianist and composer. Franz Liszt was born on 22 October 1811 in Raiding and was regarded as a child prodigy as he was only nine years old when he gave his first concerts as a pianist. A member of the Hungarian aristocracy – in those days Raiding was part of Hungary – was so captivated by Liszt that he paid for him to be trained in Vienna. There Liszt studied composition under Antonio Salieri. At the age of 12 Liszt moved to Paris where he continued his studies.
I
While Liszt’s fame as a virtuoso pianist continued to grow, he became acquainted with many famous personalities such as Hector Berlioz, Niccolò Paganini, Frédéric Chopin and Richard Wagner. Liszt went on concert tours and for many years had an unsettled life travelling around to many European cities until in 1842 he was appointed court musical director in Weimar. From then onwards he concentrated solely on composing and performing musical works. The principal works composed during the period in Weimar are the 12 symphonic poems, the ‘Faust’ and the ‘Dante’ symphonies, the Sonata in B minor, the piano cycle Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, the two piano concertos and the Dance of Death. Liszt composed mainly for orchestras and with so-called “programme music” tried to find a new definition for symphonic music. His works attracted many young musicians to Weimar which subsequently became the centre

of the progressive “New German School”. In 1861 Liszt moved to Rome, where, after several blows of fate, he devoted himself to sacred music. He composed several masses and a series of organ compositions. He repeatedly visited his illegitimate daughter Cosima, who later became Richard Wagner’s wife. Liszt made a final journey to see her in Bayreuth, where he died in 1886.

define themselves not by their origins but by their language; even a flowergirl like Eliza could improve her status and become a respectable lady if she learned to speak properly. Eliza is fascinated by this prospect. Although she has only very modest linguistic ambitions, she has to realize that she is still a long way off from fulfilling them. Furthermore, she has to struggle daily to make a living and has to take care of her father who is an alcoholic. She is always in danger of falling back into her old milieu. Rigoletto iuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto will be performed against the monumental sandstone backdrop of the Roman quarry from 8 July to 23 August 2009. At the centre of this opera is the story about Rigoletto, the court jester of the Duke of Mantua. Italian stage director Renzo Giaccheri will direct this production in the Roman quarry. Verdi wrote en thusiastically about Victor Hugo’s drama Le roi s’amuse that it was the “most magnificent subject and perhaps the greatest drama of modern times.” In a great burst of creativity he composed an opera based on the story. Rigoletto is still today one of the most frequently performed operas by Verdi. It is the first in the trilogia populare together with Il Trovatore and La Traviata. The premiere in Venice was enthusiastically acclaimed and formed the basis of Verdi’s world renown. St. Margarethen offers “opera for everyone!” The music, the singing, the stage sets, the quarry, the landscape and the gastronomic delights make opera an experience for all the senses!

Legendary artists closely associated with the Carinthian Summer include Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Arvo Pärt, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Sir Roger Norrington, Valery Gergiev, Paul Badura-Skoda, Rudolf Buchbinder, Hilary Hahn, Gidon Kremer as well as the most important internationally renowned ensembles and orchestras. Moreover, every year the castles and palaces with their impressive natural backdrops are used for cultural highlights and create an unforgettable ambience. Not only the musical journey is full of variety: from concerts by ABBA in the arena near Finkenstein Castle, choral evenings during the Millstatt Music Weeks to classical concerts at the Trigonale or the Wörthersee Classics. It is also always worthwhile to explore the world of theatre. The range of summer stages extends from theatre performances dealing with critical contemporary issues by k.l.a.s. at Heunburg Castle to comedies in Porcia at the palace of the same name, or the performances in the keep of Friesach Castle. Most festival organizers such as the Wörthersee Stage, the Konzerthaus in Klagenfurt and the Carinthian Summer offer a varied programme every year even for very young audiences. He succeeded in creating an unmistakable sound, bringing together cosmopolitan and Alpine elements. 2009 Bregenz Festival

n July and August over 200,000 visitors flock to Lake Constance to experience the atmosphere of the Bregenz lakeside opera in the open air.
2008 was a special year: in May some scenes from the James Bond film Quantum of Solace were filmed in the sets for the production of Tosca. In June the lakeside stage was used by German television as the ZDF Arena during the EURO 2008 Aida by Giuseppe Verdi In 2009/10 Verdi’s opera Aida follows Puccini’s Tosca as the production on the lake. Audiences in Cairo were enthralled by the unhappy love story between Aida and Radames at the première in 1871 and since then it has become one of the most popular and most frequently performed operas. According to David Pountney, artistic director of the Bregenz Festival, “The stage on the lake is simply a magnificent place for portraying everything that Verdi did best: transforming great passion and tragic conflicts into thrilling music. Aida is also a parable about nationalism, hunger for war and hatred of the enemy, and shows that in a war there can only be losers.” Director David Pountney
Lake Constance - Vorarlberg n focus! In 2008 the spotlight was on Lake Constance and the Rheintal in Vorarlberg for a special reason: at the beginning of May scenes for the James Bond film Quantum of Solace were filmed in Feldkirch and on the lakeside stage. The film crew was fascinated by the gigantic eye of the Tosca set. During the European Football Championships the lakeside stage was transformed into an unusual public viewing arena and provided an outstanding backdrop for ZDF's EURO 2008 studio. © BODENSEE-VORARLBERG TOURISMUS, BREGENZER FESTSPIELE GMBH

The interdisciplinary merging of the arts, the individual character of the individual venues, the broad spectrum of different event formats, and the incomparable atmosphere of this Medieval town make the Feldkirch Festival a very special cultural event in this three-countries region. In 2009 the festival programme will be entirely devoted to French music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Feldkirch Festival 2009, 10 – 21 June 2009 Artistic direction: Philippe Arlaud

for her music-theatre piece “Bählamms Fest”, premièred at the Vienna Festival in 2000. Her opera adaptation of David Lynch's cult film “Lost Highway” was first performed in Graz in 2003. The composer, who herself plays the trumpet, largely dispenses with harmony in her compositions, earning herself the reputation of an “enfant terrible” of the music world.
Kunsthaus Bregenz he opening of the Kunsthaus Bregenz in the year 1997 marked the establishment of an architecturally unique exhibition centre for contemporary art. The façade consists of etched glass tiles, giving the museum building designed by Peter Zumthor its characteristic transparent lightness and the ability to flood all four floors of the building with natural light. In 1999 the Mies van der Rohe Prize for European Architecture was awarded to the Kunsthaus for these distinctive qualities.
T
Set amidst a delightful landscape at the heart of a successful European region, the Kunsthaus is fully networked in the international art scene thanks to its specific profile. Within the space of just a few years, the centre has become one of Europe's foremost international exhibition venues. Artists, the public and the media all agree that Zumthor’s semitransparent glass cube not only dominates this idyllic site on the shores of Lake Constance, but that the exhibition programme of the Kunsthaus Bregenz is one of the finest in Europe (Monopol, 3/2006). Opening hours: Tues. – Sun. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Thurs. 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. During summer exhibition (about mid June – mid September): special opening hours: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily.

Staying on the ball Balls are one of the highlights of the Carnival season in Austria. Many professional associations and interest groups – like the lawyers, engineers, coffeehouse owners and hunters – organize their own, often glamorous balls. Many of these balls are opened by the young graduates of Vienna’s dance schools. At the traditional Opera Ball there are no fewer than 300 of them, who open this major social event with the famous polonaise by Carl Michael Ziehrer.

The last heroes he 33rd Innsbruck Festival in 2009 will be devoted to the knights of the opera stage. Where else was the last refuge for the heroes in the 18th century, if not on the baroque opera stage, where they poured out the deepest of sentiments? This refers both to the chivalrous characters of baroque opera and the singers who performed them, idolized and accursed castrati. The highlight of the 33rd Innsbruck Festival will be the opera semiseria “Orlando paladino” by Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809), one of the three great personalities commemorated in 2009. The libretto based on themes from Ludovico Ariosto’s novel “Orlando furioso” is a final reflection on the feathered helmet chivalry of high baroque opera, with a plot mixing heroic and comic elements and performed as a modern opera buffa in the style of Vienna Classicism. The festival from 7 July till 30 August is rounded out by an extensive supporting programme with lunchtime concerts, workshops, and the traditional Renaissance festival at Ambras Castle.

Welcome to the valley of farmhouses valley packed with Nature. A valley full of history and stories: at the Austrian open-air museum in Stübing near Graz, about a hundred original farmhouses from all parts of Austria idyllically embedded in the landscape tell stories about country life over six centuries. Beside the stream that flows from Vorarlberg to Burgenland, past the vast diversity of Austrian farmhouse architecture and the gardens, animals and fields pertaining to them, the path also takes you to see the traditional crafts of shingle riving, thatching and fencing. Craftsmen are regularly in attendance, and are happy for you to watch them working, even inviting you to try out their ancient skills. Stübing is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe, and as Austria’s only such museum it gives a clear overview of country life and farmhouse architecture from all parts of the country. A walk through this unique natural and manmade landscape is not only an unforgettable and relaxing experience, but also gives you an opportunity of making some exciting discoveries, giving you a fascinating insight into ancient knowledge that is today once again sought after and valued. ain an impression of picturesque Carinthia! Is it perhaps the southern light of Carinthia, the inspiring landscapes, or perhaps the diversity of the three cultural areas of the Alpine-Adriatic region? Whatever the reason, Carinthia has always brought forth notable exponents especially in the visual arts. Or tempted them to stay. The flow of outstanding artists remains unchecked, even when it comes to modern and contemporary figures: Lassnig, Rainer, Hoke, Oman, Bischoffshausen, Staudacher, Berg and Kogelnik, to name but a few…

Werner Berg Museum: The cultural town of Bleiburg has a separate museum devoted to Werner Berg, who did much of his painting at Rutarhof. No other artist has captured the frugal life of the farmers of Southern Carinthia as strikingly as this committed Carinthian by choice from Germany’s Rhineland. Museum of the Nötsch Circle: A group of artists from the small village at the foot of the Dobratsch massif achieved international recognition under the name Nötsch Circle. Along with Schiele and Kokoschka, Isepp and Wiegele from Nötsch, together with Kolig from Moravia, were amongst the founders of modern painting in Austria. The young Mahringer from Stuttgart later joined them as a pupil of Kolig’s, and became one of the leading interpreters of Carinthian landscapes. The Museum of the Nötsch Circle stages changing exhibitions on all four artists. Flexible exhibition space: Many other museum, galleries and sculpture gardens – like the [kunstwerk] Krastal, the open atelier Fritz Russ in the town of Gmünd and the castle gardens of the Judith Walker gallery in Ebenau Castle – offer a fascinating insight into picturesque Carinthia. Prohibited books can be seen along with magic spells and secret mathematical formulae. “The Power of the Word” is the title of this exhibition at which you can admire priceless manuscripts as well as the magnificent achievements of European craftsmen. The gold and silver, ivory and glass, precious stones and other materials on display are a delight to behold. The historical vaulting and elaborate wooden and stucco ceilings span a period of architecture from the 10th to the 18th century, and are also tremendously inspiring. The crystal cathedral (gigantic basement halls) is an experience for the whole family, opening up the world of the senses, whilst the extensive baroque gardens are an ideal place for quiet relaxation and contemplation. The Romanesque basilica with the tombs of the first Hapsburgs lies at the heart of the entire abbey complex. The second part of the Europa Exhibition at the Werner Berg Museum in Bleiburg is the first-ever
retrospective on the theme of art and transcendency in Austria in the 20th century. Great names like those of Schiele, Kokoschka, Rainer, Nitsch and Egger Lienz are represented along with Carinthian artists with outlandish-sounding names like Cornelius Kolig, Werner Berg, Maria Lassnig and Kiki Kogelnik. The strength of expression and virtuosity of the works on show underlines the titles of the Bleiburg section of the exhibition: “The Power of the Image – Divine Visions”. A sculpture park and a garden of religions on Europa Square form the counterpart to the open-air section of the exhibition at St. Paul's. The concept of Europa not only stands for an economic union of many countries, but also for living art, culture, literature and music over the centuries. Forchtenstein Castle rincely universe: The mighty fortification of Forchtenstein Castle towers over the foothills of the Rosalia massif. It was never taken during the Turkish wars, and the family treasures accumulated over the centuries can still be admired here. The enigmatic treasury is the only “art and wonder cabinet” surviving in its original site, making it unique in the whole of Europe. The exhibition of remarkable ancestors is the largest ancestral portrait gallery in Central Europe – an exciting and amusing journey through the history of this respected princely family. One curious exhibit here is the only surviving full-length portrait of Vlad Tepes "Count Dracula", who is claimed as a family ancestor along with Attila the Hun. The unique collection of silver furniture from the baroque age is also legendary, and can be admired in the rooms of the castle. 2009 is an anniversary year which will be dominated by the celebrations to commemorate the 850th anniversary of the award of the oldest civic law in Austria to the citizens of St. Pölten. A festive ceremony will take place on 3 May 2009 at the Landestheater and will be accompanied by a three-day historic market on the town-hall square. Medieval St. Pölten will be brought to life again by means of models, reconstructions and visualisations of all kinds; streets and squares will temporarily be given their old designations again. Medieval guided tours, special exhibitions and several first-class performances will complement the diverse programme of cultural events planned for the whole year. This project has been sponsored by the European Regional Development Fund and the Fund for Economy and Tourism of Lower Austria.

Elfriede Jelinek. Born in 1946 in Styria, the writer shows up private, public and political shortcomings with her sarcastic and provocative style. She grew up in the tradition of the Viennese educated middle-class and in 1975 made her literary breakthrough with the persiflage of a homeland novel Die Liebhaberinnen. Her best-known work The Pianist was made
Cultural pleasures in Graz. Why the city on the River Mur breathes culture.
The brilliant dramatist Werner Schwab continued this success story into the 1990s. The Graz School of architecture is similarly legendary and particularly in the 1980s was internationally acclaimed for its exceptional status. Some of its leading representatives such as Domenig, Kada or the duo Szyszkowitz-Kowalski have since then made their mark on the urban image of Graz with their unique designs. In the old town centre with its rich architectural heritage they have introduced high quality modern trends. Nevertheless a good reputation also means obligations. Anyone who visits Graz encounters modern architecture in a density that puts many other European cities in the shade. The variety found here shows that creative free spirits are welcome here by tradition. The Kunsthaus by the English architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier is a striking example. A deep-blue strange-looking creation that dominates the right bank of the River Mur, surrounded by low suburban houses in the districts of Gries and Lend. In the middle of the river is a half-open shell which is accessible on foot. The American artist Vito Acconci designed it; the city has equipped it with a coffee house and an open-air stage. UNESCO added the historic town centre of Graz to its list of World Cultural Heritage sites because it harmoniously combines the old and the new. Graz can claim many great intellects in the arts and sciences to its name. However, we are not talking here about a cultural display of achievements, not about categorical superlatives in a pleasure-seeking society but about culture that is lived out, celebrated and enjoyed.

For all visitors who want to enjoy sophisticated and high quality entertainment the Opera Ball on 31 January will be a festivity for all the senses. There can hardly be a more appropriate venue than one of the most beautiful opera houses in Europe. springnine, the largest festival for electronic art and music in Austria, enters its ninth year this year and from 20 May transforms Graz again into a pulsating metropolis of lively pop culture. The best and most creative chefs will be guests at the Gourmet Travel Festival in Graz. They come from all over the world and have one thing in common: they are the crème de la crème of elite international chefs and at Whitsun will make Graz and Styria the world’s culinary centre. The Styriarte Festival presents new insights into old music perfectly in accordance with the wishes of its central artistic figure: Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Graz is also ruled by Jazz. Various events take place, not least the Jazz Summer: all star jazz on a large scale for moderate prices. The La Strada Street and Puppet Theatre Festival art presents itself as a festival of international theatre of the highest standards.
Every year the Styrian Autumn fills the city with the latest trends in art. This is only a selection of some of the highlights programmed for the cultural year.
