Ironworks can help if you’re pressed for time!

WITH life moving at such a hectic pace, it’s often difficult to make time for those household chores. If both the adults in the house are working full time, it means that the time spent together at weekends is so precious. So that’s why more and more people are choosing to send their ironing to specialist firms who will pick up your creased clothing and return it looking in A1 condition. One such company is Ironworks, in Neston - you may have seen the trademark red Jeep around the town! Ironworks Laundry Services started three years ago when Carole Killikelly and Christine Duffy got together and decided to make a go of it on their own. Having all worked in the clothing industry for many years they have acquired a HND in Clothing & Technology and experience in quality management. After working for high street companies in laundry and dry cleaning they took the plunge, renting out a small space in a large industrial unit. So, with a small investment in equipment and advertising they set up in business and after three years of hard work they

have now moved to Windle Court, on the Clayhill, in Neston. As the name suggests, they are ironing experts and offer alterations and a dry cleaning service. Plus, they will pick up and deliver for free within 48 hours. Christine says: “We believe the secret to our succes has been to put the customer’s needs first. This has meant that we have got lots of loyal customers which has helped hugely in the current economic climate. “I think that what makes a difference is a combination of those little extra touches and very affordable prices.” Their new premises are ideally situated near the town centre, for people to drop off or pick up their laundry with loads of free parking right outside the door.

nesTon often has a split identity - is it Cheshire or is it Wirral? despite being within the Cheshire boundary, the area has much in common with the peninsular. as a result of being on the periphery of the new Cheshire West and Chester Council, a local community group has planned a CH64 safari to show off the area to counci leaders. They want your suggestions on the route to show CH64 off in the best possible light.

LeADeRS of the new Cheshire West and Chester Council are being invited to take part in a ‘get to know us’ mystery bus tour of the Neston area on 13th october. Robin Hughes, from community group ch64inc, the organisers of the tour, said: “People in the new council, which took over from Cheshire and ellesmere Port in April of this year, are not as familiar as they might be with Neston and its villages. Here, in the far North-West corner of the new local authority area, we want to be sure that they are well-informed and we are not overlooked.” Local organisations, business leaders and councillors will show officials round the area, visiting Burton, Willaston and Parkgate as well as the town centre, the new Neston Youth and Community Centre, West Vale, the Aldi and Sainsbury’s developments, the Clay Hill industrial estate, the High School, Recreation Centre and the Children’s Centre. ch64inc is inviting local people to put forward their ideas for the future of the area for presentation to officials on the day. Suggestions may be added via the website www.aboutmyarea.co.uk/CH64, by email to [email protected], or by post to ch64inc, the Neston Centre, High Street, Neston, CH64 9tZ.

Slimline Sammie is a new woman!

10

SAMMIE Seagrave lost so much weight with Slimming World that her neighbours didn’t even recognise her! Sammie, who attends the Little Neston class, has shed an amazing 6 ½ stones so that she is literally half the woman she used to be! “I lost about 3st through the winter months and didn’t see much of my neighbours” recounts Sammie. “I also grew my hair to go with my new look and when spring arrived when we were out and about more, I noticed that neighbours would just smile at me or say a polite hello. When I told a friend she started to laugh and told me that it was because they had thought my husband Chris had got himself a new woman, as they didn’t recognise me after all the weight I’d lost!” Sammie started to gain weight at age of 12 and by the age of 32 her weight had spiralled out of control. After hearing about Slimming World from a family member, Sammie went along to her local group in Burton Road to join. “I was really nervous about walking into the group on the first night, but somehow I plucked up the courage and did it. Once I got inside, everyone was so friendly and helpful and I immediately felt at ease,” added Sammie. A slim Sammie at her wedding in 2007 Sammie remembers, and from that day on her future was about to change for the better. In her first week she lost over 6lbs and in a month had lost over a stone! She loved the eating plans, and the way she could eat as much as she wanted of lots of tasty foods, and never felt hungry or restricted. “I’ve totally changed the way I prepare meals, and use fresh low fat ingredients,” says Sammie. “I automatically shop for healthy foods now and find that I don’t feel the need to snack as much because I’m eating three satisfying meals a day. So Sammie carried on losing weight, and in 2007 she looked pretty as a picture when she married long term boyfriend Chris. To complete the happy story, Sammie finally became pregnant and in 2008 she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Ruby Returning to the group afterwards she has lost the baby weight and now feels great.

Helping your pet cope with Bonfire Night While we as humans may enjoy celebrating 5th November with fireworks, for many pets this can be an extremely stressful time. Dogs and cats have extremely good hearing and can be startled or afraid of noises that are loud or unfamiliar. There are a number of things that you can do to help your pet during this period so that they feel more secure and to help keep them safe. Protecting Cats and Dogs from Noise and Accidents Never let your pet outside while fireworks are being let off, even if you think they won’t be frightened as they can be very unpredictable around loud noises which could result in an accident and/ or injury. Make sure that you have exercised your dog earlier in the day before the fireworks start so that they are more likely to settle in the evening. Keep all windows closed and curtains drawn and block off your cat or dog flaps so that they can’t escape. It is advisable to have your pet microchipped so if they do get out, they can be easily traced and reconciled with you quickly. We are doing a special offer of just £15 throughout October for microchipping – see our advert for more details. Having background noise which they are familiar with can be helpful to distract them, eg TV or radio and this will block out some of the noise of the fireworks. Try to avoid leaving your pet alone as this can make them more stressed. There is also a product known as D.A.P (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) which can be given to your pet in the lead up to Bonfire night. This simulates a scent signal that bitches produce to help their puppies settle and feel safe. D.A.P has been proven to help reduce firework fear in dogs and it comes in a variety of formats but the most effective product comes as a plug-in which you use in your home and is suitable for dogs of any age. It is advisable to start using this for a few weeks before the fireworks start so that it has time to take effect and your pet will get most benefit from it. Ask our staff for further details on this. Protecting Smaller Domestic Animals Pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and birds all need to be treated with special care when fireworks are being let off as these animals are easily frightened. Make sure that you bring outdoor hutches and cages inside for the night or into a shed/garage where they can be kept as quiet as possible. You can cover hutches & cages with a blanket to lessen the noise and keep the animal calmer but make sure that they have sufficient air circulation. You can also give your pet extra bedding to burrow in which will help to make it feel more secure. If your pet does have to stay outside, try to face its hutch/cage towards a wall and again cover it with a blanket. Make sure that you do not let off fireworks anywhere near its cage and check regularly to make sure that it is not becoming stressed.

Vanessa lives the dream:

VANeSSA Fields is on cloud nine after gaining a place at Welbeck, Defence Sixth Form College. Vanessa, who is a sergeant at Neston Air Cadets, is one step closer to fulfilling her dream of becoming an Engineering Officer in the RAF. Her achievement can be accredited to both her hard work at Wirral Grammar School for Girls and also the invaluable skills gained through her attendance at 2375 (Neston) Squadron, Air training Corps. She is not the only Neston cadet who is aiming for a career within the RAF. Cadet David Hannam is hoping to join in September of this year. Flight Sergeant tom outram is hoping to become a pilot. Cadet Warrant Officer Jessica Bell is hoping to become a doctor within the RAF. All these cadets have gained invaluable skills during their time within the Air training Corps. the cadets meet on tuesday evenings, 8pm, at tanks Field, off Church Lane, Neston. New cadets (aged over 13) are very welcome to come along.

APoLLo Blinds has started as it means to go on by wowing Wirral homeowners who have had the first glimpse of the fabulous new collections from Britain’s biggest blinds store chain. the company, which has more than 75 outlets across the UK, has just launched a new service for the Wirral peninsula and Marc McQuilliam from Apollo Blinds is delighted with the reaction from homeowners to the range of quality made-to-measure window blinds, awnings and plantation shutters. “there is no doubt that homeowners on the Wirral have been crying out for high quality window blinds products which are at the cutting edge of current home interior trends,” he said. “And if our first few weeks are anything to go by then Apollo Blinds has filled that gap and will be well on its way to becoming the number one choice for anyone who wants to use window blinds and coverings to make their homes beautiful.” Apollo Blinds has the area’s most comprehensive collection of Venetian, Vertical, Roman Roller and Conservatory blinds but it is some of the niche products that are exciting homeowners, according to Mr McQuilliam. “Plantation shutters are the fastest selling new range within the Apollo Blinds group right now because they are becoming extremely fashionable and it seems everyone wants to get their hands on them,” he said. “everyone I’ve showed our basswood shutters to has gone weak at the knees when they see the quality and beauty of our collection and they want them because they recognise just what a difference they will make to their homes. “But it’s not just shutters that are wowing our customers. our stunning new Calico blinds are a new variation of a Roman blind that has just come from Australia. they are lighter than traditional Romans with more neutral lightweight fabrics which are perfect for properties close to the sea. “And for people who have conservatories we have the Perfect Fit system which has been specifically designed for uPVC windows so there is no need to drill into existing frames.” to book an appointment for one of Marc’s complimentary home consultations please call 0151 203 6160 or 07863 805638. YoUNG people in the Neston area are to be given the opportunity to join two brand new community choirs this autumn. thanks to funding from Connexions, Youth opportunities Fund and PAYP (Positive Activities for Young People), Neston Youth Choir (for 13-19 year olds) and Neston Children’s Choir (for 7-12 year olds) have been able to start rehearsals. Both choirs will be led by Musical Director Paula Prytherch, an experienced vocal coach who also sings with ‘Sense of Sound,’ the Liverpool-based choir featured in the BBC series Last Choir Standing in 2008.

Paula said: “this is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn to sing together, and we will be exploring all sorts of musical genres; some traditional, but also including pop, soul, R&B and funk. “they’ll learn a lot of tricks and techniques, and they’ll also have a lot of fun. the programme is open to all young people in Neston - thanks to the funding we have secured, it’s free of charge to join in.” Choir rehearsals will take place every Wednesday at St Michael’s Church, Marshlands Road, Little Neston. 6-7pm for the Neston Children’s Choir, 7-9pm for the Neston Youth Choir. to take part just turn up at the Church on the night, or, for more information, call Paula on 07588 559729. Could you be an ‘IT Buddy’ for Neston Community Cybercentre? Neston Community Cybercentre (NCC) needs new volunteers to become a Buddy. A Buddy is an ordinary person, who is able to send emails, use the Internet to search for cheap flights etc. and who can use the basics of Word. You need to like helping people with no IT experience at all and show them how easy it is to use a mouse and get on line. Training will be provided to all new Buddies so that they know how the Cybercentre works and they will never be working on their own as we always have two Buddies for each two and half hour session. The NCC recently received a two year Fair Share Trust grant, from the National Lottery. “It’s the first time we have not had to worry about paying our bills” said Paul Flanagan who is Chair of this voluntary IT training group. “We have been in operation since 2001 and help anyone aged 16 and over to use computers. Many people don’t even know how to use a mouse but soon find that they can research their family history and use the Internet for banking.” This service is free and enables people to learn what they want and not have to follow a fixed course. The NCC currently has some 20 Buddies, who cover two and a half hour sessions, between Monday and Thursday but they need some more Buddies. If you know a little about using computers, please call in to the Methodist Church, Park Street, Neston (the opening hours are shown below) or email neston.cybercentre@ googlemail.com “We have 255 active members who come in regularly and it is a very friendly place.”

H

omeopatHy is one of the two most widely used forms of medicine in the world today because people are discovering the benefits of a system of medicine that is safe, effective and treats them as unique individuals. Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine that treats mental, emotional and physical illness. Homeopathic medicines are chosen to treat the whole person because homeopaths believe the mind and body operate as one, and you cannot treat one part of the body without affecting the whole. medicines are chosen to fit all the characteristics of the patient, so physical disorders are considered in relation to the individual’s mental and emotional state. Homeopathy works on a principle known as

‘the law of similars’ or ‘like cures like’. This law states that a substance that can cause a disease can also relieve it. For example, coffee is a stimulant that can cause temporary insomnia. Coffea may be used in minute potentised (i.e. homeopathic) doses to relieve that insomnia. Homeopathy can be used effectively by everyone from babies to adults, including women during pregnancy. It is safe, non-toxic and non-addictive. Homeopathy can be taken alongside drugs prescribed by your doctor and will not interfere with their beneficial action. to find a qualified and registered member of The Society of Homeopaths look for the initials RSHom after their name. The Society can be contacted on 0845 450 6611. www. homeopathy-soh.org

Homeopathy: Healthy Medicine Homeopathy can significantly improve many health conditions such as: Acne, Allergies, Anxiety, Arthritis, Asthma, Candida, Colic, Depression, Diabetes, Digestive disorders, Eczema, Glue ear, Fatigue, Hay fever, High cholesterol & blood pressure, IBS, Infertility, Menopause and Menstrual problems, Migraine, Prostate problems, Sleep disturbances, Stress, Thyroid disorders.

Homeopathy is particularly useful if no one can give you a diagnosis but you still feel unwell. Homeopathic medicines promote the body’s natural ability to heal. It is gentle enough for a baby and powerful enough for a man. Clinics now available in Willaston, Ellesmere Port & Handbridge in Chester.

Church becomes a film set in make believe funeral FUNERALS don’t usually take place on a Sunday afternoon. But the one at Neston Parish Church last month was all make believe - part of the film ‘The Wages of Sin’ The 25-minute film, directed by Sue Bence, from Bebington, is being made by the Wirral community film and theatre group Shoreline as a competition piece. Thirty local volunteers responded to press articles and adverts posted in Wirral libraries to take part as extras acting as the mourners at the funeral. The shooting took just over an hour to complete and this has provided material for about three minutes of the film. The opening scene will be the mourners leaving the church to go into the churchyard where they form a group around an imaginary grave. Writer and producer James Chalmers is grateful for being given permission to use the church. The actors playing the three main characters are Paigre

Rushbrook, from Heswall, Barry Powell, from Great Sutton, and John Jones, from Willaston. The story is a drama about the nature of the relationship between an artist and the young girl who modelled for the face in a religious painting. The vicar and his friend argue over the artist’s motives and the girl’s innocence. James Chalmers is well known locally as a writer and producer of films and stage plays. The script of his last film ‘The Book of Spells’ was a finalist at this year’s Moondance International Film Festival in America. And in 2005 he won the top Libretto prize at the same festival for his stage musical ‘The Magic Opera’. Both these were staged as theatre pieces at Heswall Hall. Filming of ‘The Wages of Sin’ will be completed by the middle of October and it will have a premiere screening in January to which all the extras will be invited.

These pupils were a credit to the school and teachers.” She was a redhead. No hair, just a red head - Les Dawson
