Tributes to car crash victims

TRIBUTES have poured in to the four people who died in the tragic crash on the A540. Friends John Aston, 20, Eddy Smith, 19, Michaela Favager, 19, and Gill Fowle, 43, were killed when the car hit a tree near the Runnel junction at 2.10am on Sunday 19th July. They had been travelling towards the Wirral in a Vauxhall Tigra when the accident occurred. It is believed that the car somersaulted several times after hitting the tree before ending up on its roof. Flowers have been placed at the scene of the tragedy and a Facebook site has been set up for people to leave their messages of condolence. Paul Casserley wrote: ‘R.I.P. My deepest sympathies go out to everyone who knew them and their families. A tragic accident. May peace be with you.’ Ella Storey wrote: ‘Sometimes God has to call his angels home. Such a heartbreaking waste, may you all rest in peace.’ Thomas Andrew Prosser wrote: ‘It is weird how it just happens like that to good people that never done anything wrong to people and just lived there lives like they should.’ Lynda Thompson wrote: ‘Your lives were too young to be taken. You should never have been taken in this way.’ The cause of the crash remains a mystery, although there are some suggestions that the car hit a pothole. Police are still appealing for witnesses and will submit their findings to a future inquest.

Pupils get a taste of the great outdoors

THERE was much activity at Neston High School recently, when pupils from Neston, St Winefride’s, Parkgate, Willaston, Bishop Wilson and Woodfall Primary Schools along with pupils from Mostyn House School took part in an Eco-picnic. The event marked the opening of the new outdoor classroom at the High School by Alan Beer, director of Beers Timber and Building Supplies Ltd who sponsored the classroom. Pupils picnicked on the grass before taking part in a round of activities ranging from building bird boxes with the Cheshire Rangers, worm charming, eco-art and visiting birds of prey courtesy of Rockcliffe Raptors. Students from Neston High School acted as hosts at the event organised by Michelle Broughton, the manager of Neston High School’s Leonardo Centre. Judy Gilmour, assistant headteacher (community development) said: ‘The event was a splendid occasion which allowed us to showcase our new outdoor facility as well as encouraging everyone to take part in activities which are supportive of our environment. “This is a focus for us this year as we, along with Woodfall Primary, have been successful in obtaining British Council funding to work with partners both locally and with our respective partner schools in Cape Town on a project entitled ‘Eco United’. “The opening of our outdoor classroom and the eco-picnic form a part of this and I am delighted to say that the day has been so successful that we have been asked to repeat it again next year for more pupils.”

So, in recent months, I have set about creating an alternative! My aim was to source a high quality range of day to day “lifestage” pet foods, for dogs cats & rabbits, which was simple and easy to understand, and affordable, with a target that the selling prices should offer a very significant saving over the current “high end” products. Bishop Wilson Primary School’s Council arranged a non-uniform day to raise money for the Harley Slack Fund. Harley is a little boy who has lost his limbs to meningitis. His parents are fundraising to adapt their home and to provide Harley with the best limbs throughout his life. They raised £155.47 on the day.

All the fun of the fair

NESTON’S Village Fair has been judged a massive success after attracting over 2,000 visitors. Highlights included a talent competition, a giant 14ft miner, classic cars, a human fruit machine and plenty of people dressed up as miners to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the start of coal mining in the area. The Lord Mayor of Chester Cllr John Ebo was the special guest, officially opening the fair and presenting the talent show first prize to rock band Infamous, from Neston High School.

NESTON Town Council met in Neston Parish Church for its second meeting, chaired by Moira Andrews. Mike Shipman was elected as Deputy Chair following a close vote. The Chairman said she had attended Neston Village Fair, Willaston Fair, and graduation day at Neston Sure Start, where the children wore gowns and mortarboards, and the Chairman wore her regalia. The Council agreed to join Cheshire Association of Local Councils (Chalc) who the Chairman pointed out had helped in setting up the Council, from the beginning when Neston Civic Society organised a petition. The annual sub will be £1888. They also agreed to join Cheshire Community Action, a charity that The chairman Moira Andrews presented gives grants for local projects. The the Civic Regalia that belonged to annual sub will be £100. Neston Urban District Council until Mike Shipman raised the 1974. The regalia has been cleaned by problem of ward boundaries. Balducci, in Neston Pauline English explained that the Boundaries Commission had decided that CWAC should have 75 councillors instead of 73, and proposed two councillors for Neston with Parkgate, and three for an area including Little Neston, Riverside, Burton, Puddington, Willaston, Hooton, Childer Thornton, and Shotwick Park. The chairman presented the Civic Regalia that belonged to Neston Urban District Council until 1974. Janet Griffiths passed on a request from the Street Scene workers, who keep our streets clean, for an extra pair of hands from May to September in Parkgate, because of the influx of tourists. Celia Garvey asked for higher quality plants to be planted by CWAC in Neston. The next meeting was fixed for Tuesday August 18 at 6.30 pm in Neston Parish Church. After the public had left, the Town Council discussed co-option of an extra councillor for Riverside Ward, and negotiations about a permanent place for the Town Council to meet.

Market change: NESTON’S Friday Market will relocate onto Brook Street and the site of the former Belmont Cottage. Town centre bus routes will be diverted to accommodate the market and Brook Street will be closed.

AUGUST IN YOUR GARDEN Gardening by Janet Heath August can be a dull month in the garden as the spring and early summer flowering shrubs and perennials are over and tree foliage can look a bit tired. With a bit of planning, you can have colour in the garden if you concentrate on flowering perennials and some shrubs. Flowering shrubs include such favourites as hydrangeas, Hypericum Hidcote with its shiny buttercup yellow flowers, Lavatera, which flowers for weeks in shades of white and pink and Buddleia, try the variety Black Knight with its deep purple flowers. If you go for flowers, there are many perennials that will reliably flower every year especially if you have a sunny border. Campanula lactiflora is tall with clusters of bell flowers in white or pink. For something different and if you have slightly damp soil, consider Inula hookeri which will give you large, yellow delicately fringed daisy flowers about 75cm (30ins) tall in July and August. Pair it with scarlet or deep pink Dahlias for a bright show of summer colour. Gypsophila or Baby’s Breath is an old cottage garden favourite with tiny button white flowers on tall stems (75cm (30ins) which will give you an airy cloud of white. In the vegetable garden you should keep your, salads, tomatoes, beans and courgettes watered. If you pick them regularly, they will continue to produce. Beans and peas will tend to stop producing if pods are allowed to mature. Late salads and radishes can be sown for cropping in autumn. Try some of the salad leaves for winter such as Land Cress which is similar in flavour to watercress but easier to grow in fertile soil that does not dry out. Spinach can also be sown for winter and spring cropping again in rich fertile soil. August is a good time to clip hedges for the last time in the year. Lavender can also be clipped back after flowering for bushy growth next year. Remember not to cut back into wood where there is no green growth, as this will kill the plant. Lawns may well be looking tired after long dry spells but they will come back again after early autumn rains. Rather than waste water on the lawn, just accept the situation! Q. I am very fair skinned and I am going on holiday to a hot country. I always burn, so should I have some sunbed sessions before I go to protect my skin? A. I would never advocate the use of sunbeds. A suntan is the skins response to exposure to harmful radiation in order to protect itself. In short, a tanned skin is a damaged skin. If you are very fair skinned take sensible precautions – apply a very high factor sunblock at regular intervals, stay out of the sun during the hottest hours and wear a hat. If you want to go brown – fake it with a self-tan product. Either build up the fake tan gradually with a product applied daily or visit a professional therapist for fake tan treatment. Don’t forget that fake tan is purely cosmetic and will not protect your skin from the sun. Q. I have small unsightly red veins on my cheeks, how can I remove them? A. These small red veins are often called ‘thread veins’ or ‘dilated capillaries’ and the ones that have a centre with ‘legs’ radiating out from the centre are called ‘spider naevi’ due to the fact they look like little red spiders! There are a variety of solutions to your problem. Masking them with a remedial camouflage cream or green tinted concealer may be suitable. If this is not acceptable they can be successfully removed with either laser or short wave diathermy, which is also often called advanced electrolysis. Not everyone is suitable for these treatments so ensure that your qualified therapist gives you a consultation prior to treatment. Prevention is always better than cure with most skin problems so ask your therapist about measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of the formation of further red veins.
