August 30, 2009 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
WELCOME TO PEACE WITH CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH! We give thanks to God that you are joining us today! Many of our guests are seeking a home church where they can be part of the Fellowship of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace with Christ is a congregation that is a family not an “organization”. We are small enough to allow people to know each other by name, and yet large enough to offer opportunities for growth and service. What we “specialize” in is not programs or productions, but simply The Gospel of Our Lord Jesus. Christ, His Word, and the Cross are what provide the foundation for faith and ministry. If you are interested in learning more about Peace With Christ Lutheran Church, please call the church office at 226-4721. Pastor Patrick would welcome the opportunity to visit with you personally.
“Don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith” Romans 12:3 THE TIME before the service may be used for prayer and preparation. Read through the worship bulletin and familiarize yourself with the service. A few moments spent this way will help make the service more meaningful.

Writing - TREASURY OF DAILY PRAYER Great and grievous, indeed, are these dangers and temptations, which every Christian must bear. We bear them even though each one were alone by himself. So every hour that we are in this vile life, we are attacked on all sides (2Corinthians 4:8), chased and hunted down. We are moved to cry out and to pray that God would not allow us to become weary and faint (Isaiah 40:31; Hebrews 12:3) and to fall again into sin, shame, and unbelief. For otherwise it is impossible to overcome even the least temptation. We Christians must be armed (Ephesians 6:10-18) and daily expect to be constantly attacked. No one may go on in security and carelessly, as though the devil were far from us. At all times we must expect and block his blows. Though I am now chaste, patient, kind, and in firm faith, the devil will this very hour send such an arrow into my heart that I can scarcely stand. For his is an enemy that never stops or becomes tired. So when one temptation stops, there always arise others and fresh ones. So there is no help or comfort except to run here, take hold of the Lord’s Prayer, and speak to God from the heart like this: “Dear Father, You have asked me to pray. Don’t let me fall because of temptations.” Then you will see that the temptations must stop and finally confess themselves conquered. If you try to help yourself by your own thoughts and counsel, you will only make the matter worse and give the devil more space. For he has a serpent’s head (Revelation 12:9). If it finds an opening into which it can slip, the whole body will follow without stopping. But prayer can prevent him and drive him back. Large Catechism III 105, 109-11
A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD FORMULA OF CONCORD, SOLID DECLARATION ARTICLE VI: THE PERSON OF CHRIST THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
No man besides [Christ], either in heaven or on earth, can say with truth, "Where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I among them" (Matthew 18:20). Also, "Behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." We do not understand these testimonies to mean that only Christ's divinity is present with us in the Christian Church and congregation, and that such presence does not apply to Christ according to His humanity... However, the Holy Scriptures say this only about Christ, and no other man. We hold that by these words the majesty of the man Christ is declared. Christ has received this majesty, according to His humanity, at the right hand of God's majesty and power. So also, according to His received human nature and with the same, He can be, and also is, present where He wants to be. He is present especially in His Church and congregation on earth as Mediator, Head, King, and High Priest. This presence is not a part, or only one half of Him. Christ's entire person is present, to which both natures belong, the divine and the human-not only according to His divinity, but also according to, and with, His received human nature. He is our Brother, and we are flesh of His flesh and bone of His bone. He has instituted His Holy Supper for the certain assurance and confirmation of this, so that He will be with us, and dwell, work, and be effective in us. (paragraphs 76-79)

Fan into Flame — August 16-31 The Fan into Flame campaign aims to raise $100 million for new mission work around the United States and throughout the world. Its structure is based on Acts 1:8, in which Jesus promises His followers, “You will bear witness . . . in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Nearly 850 LCMS congregations have participated in the campaign thus far. Daily Prayers: Sunday: With thanksgiving for the districts that are currently participating in Fan into Flame campaigns. Pray for God’s blessing on these districts as they complete the campaigns: Florida-Georgia, Indiana, Iowa West, Michigan, Mid-South, Nebraska, New England, North Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pacific Southwest.
Monday: For the other districts that plan to initiate their involvement in the campaign soon—may their members’ involvement strengthen their faith in our generous Lord and their passion for mission involvement! Russia – September 1-15 LCMS work began in Russia in 1992, and LCMS World Mission is involved in theological education in Russia on various levels. LCMS World Mission also supports our partner church in Russia as it trains leaders for outreach in this vast land. Tuesday: For career missionaries Rev. Jon and Julie Muhly, and their sons, David and Nathaniel. Ask the Lord to continue to protect and guide them in their work.
Wednesday: For career missionary Rev. Matt Heise, who is based in Tblisi, Georgia, but who works often in Russia as a theological educator. Ask the Lord to bless his words as he teaches many Russian leaders.
Thursday: For The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria in Russia (ELCIR), the LCMS partner church. Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to increase the numbers in this church body and the faith of its members, and also to provide them with passion and insight into the outreach challenges of their time.
Friday: For the music outreach ministry in St. Petersberg, Russia, which is coordinated by a Lutheran laywoman, Dasha Shkurlyatyeva. Pray that the words of the Gospel that many are hearing through music would take root in unbelievers’ hearts.
Saturday: For the work of Slava Ostanin, an evangelist, who reaches out to adult prisoners, juvenile delinquents, criminals recently discharged from prison, and their families with the Good News of Jesus’ love through the Icthus prison ministry.
