NEWS AND NOTES FROM PEACE WITH CHRIST 1412 W. Swallow Road Fort Collins, CO 80526 970-226-4721 Pastor Ralph Patrick www.pwchrist-fc.org

August 9, 2009 Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

WELCOME TO PEACE WITH CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH! We give thanks to God that you are joining us today! Many of our guests are seeking a home church where they can be part of the Fellowship of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace with Christ is a congregation that is a family not an “organization”. We are small enough to allow people to know each other by name, and yet large enough to offer opportunities for growth and service. What we “specialize” in is not programs or productions, but simply The Gospel of Our Lord Jesus. Christ, His Word, and the Cross are what provide the foundation for faith and ministry. If you are interested in learning more about Peace With Christ Lutheran Church, please call the church office at 226-4721. Pastor Patrick would welcome the opportunity to visit with you personally.

THE TIME before the service may be used for prayer and preparation. Read through the worship bulletin and familiarize yourself with the service. A few moments spent this way will help make the service more meaningful. NEXT WEEK’S LUTHERAN HOUR MESSAGE: “Nowhere Else To Go” Speaker: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD THE LARGE CATECHISM ORIGINAL SIN TENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Christ redeemed human nature as His work, sanctifies it, raises it from the dead, and gloriously adorns it as His work. But original sin He has not created, received, redeemed, or sanctified. He will not raise it, adorn it, or save it in the elect. In the ‹blessed› resurrection original sin will be entirely destroyed [1 Corinthians 15:5157]… On the other hand, we believe, teach, and confess that original sin is not a minor corruption. It is so deep a corruption of human nature that nothing healthy or uncorrupt remains in man's body or soul, in his inward or outward powers [Romans 3:10-12]. As the Church sings: Through Adam's fall is all corrupt, Nature and essence human. This damage cannot be fully described [Psalm 19:12]. It cannot be understood by reason, but only from God's Word. We affirm that no one but God alone can separate human nature and this corruption of human nature from each other. This will fully come to pass through death, in the ‹blessed› resurrection. At that time our nature, which we now bear, will rise and live eternally without original sin and be separated and divided from it. As written in Job 19:26-27, "After my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold." (paragraphs 6, 8-10)

Luther Quote: “Spiritual Strength Comes from Union with Christ: Christ is in earnest when He says that if you believe in Him, you will abide with Him and He will abide with you. For, says He, I am in you; and if you lack anything, I have righteousness, holiness, and wisdom in plenty. I have no infirmity. But if you have weakness, it is in Me: and I will see to it that I relieve it and drown your weakness in My power and strength, submerge your sin in My righteousness, and devour your death by My life.”

Macau – August 1-15 LCMS World Mission began work in Macau in 1988. LCMS missionaries established Concordia English Center. The center uses a combination of English-as-a-ForeignLanguage teaching, small-group Bible studies, and various fellowship activities to gather and evangelize both Cantonese residents of Macau and Mandarin-speaking migrant workers from surrounding areas.

Daily Prayers: Sunday: For the Chinese Christians who come to the Concordia English Center and St. Paul’s Church. Pray that they would become strong leaders at the English Center, the church, and in the community. Monday: For the development of two new similar English Centers in nearby Hong Kong. Ask God to bless their first year of operation and that many students will come to learn English and hear the Gospel. Tuesday: For Pastor Young and Joanna, the pastor and evangelist at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, that God would give them guidance in leading the church in Macau. Wednesday: For the ministry of short-term mission teams coming to Macau and Hong Kong. May the short-term missionaries have many opportunities to share the Gospel with the students and positively impact the ongoing ministry in Macau and Hong Kong. Thursday: For the people of Macau, that they would turn from their idols of money, false gods, ancestors, and self, and turn to the one True God, who brings eternal life through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Friday: For the Lord to provide more missionaries to work in the harvest field of Macau. Every year, the Center could use many more short-term missionaries and GEO missionaries to meet the needs of the ministry there. Saturday: For even more short-term teams to answer the Lord’s call to serve for one or two weeks in Macau or Hong Kong, taking advantage of the doors that God has opened at many schools and English Centers to share the Gospel with students. www.lcmsworldmission
