Practical Information Iceland and its people
Business hours
Iceland is the second largest island in Europe (103,000 sq.km). The first inhabitants arrived from Scandinavia and the British Isles more than 1100 years ago. Its present population is approximately 300,000, nearly half of which lives in or around the capital, Reykjavík. The rest of the population is distributed around the coastal fringes, leaving the centre of the country uninhabited. Icelanders are proud of their language, which hardly differs from the Old Norse spoken by the first settlers. Well educated and well travelled, most Icelanders are multilingual, which makes commmunication relatively easy for English speaking visitors.
As a general rule offices are open from 9 am to 5 pm (8 am to 4 pm during the summer months) on weekdays. Shops are generally open from 9 am to 6 pm on weekdays. Several Supermarkets and shops in Malls have extended opening hours and are also open on weekends.
Climate The climate in Iceland is warmer than the name suggests; thanks to the Gulf Stream, which flows past the south and east coast on its way north. The summers are cool, with an average temperature of about 12°C in the hottest month, but the winters are mild, with an average temperature of about 0°C in the coldest month. However, the weather is very unpredictable and can change very abruptly. Good equipment and clothing is therefore essential during your holiday.
Credit Cards Debit and credit cards are accepted by most organizations and are widely used. The major cards in Iceland are VISA and Eurocard/ MasterCard, although other cards are accepted in some places.
Currency exchange The Icelandic monetary unit is the “krona”. All Icelandic banks (open 9:15 am to 4 pm) provide money exchange as well as the Change Group Iceland at the Tourist Information Center in Reykjavík (open from 8:30 am to 8 pm 7 days a week). Exchange banks are also operated in the arrival and duty free areas of the airport.
Clothing Clothing should include lightweight woollens, a thick sweater or cardigan, rainwear, windbreaker and sturdy hiking shoes, but we also recommend that you bring lighter clothes for nicer weather. For those heading for the interior or camping warm underwear and socks are a must. There are many opportunities for swimming and bathing in thermal waters, so a bathing suit should be brought along at any time of the year.

Greater Area Reykjavík Sightseeing This tour includes the most significant places in the capital and the surrounding towns. Only a few places are listed below. We visit the presidential residence at Bessastaðir as well as Hafnarfjörður, the town where the “hidden people” and humans live together in harmony. There we also visit the old fishing harbor and when possible, the fish market. In Reykjavik we go to the restaurant Perlan, which is built on water tanks that hold the city’s hot water supply. After enjoying the spectacular view over Reykjavík and its surroundings we go to Höfði house where the all-important summit between former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and former U.S.S.R. Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev took place in 1986. We visit the Hallgrímskirkja church and the old town centre where the Icelandic parliament Alþingi and the town hall are situated. We also show you the sports and recreation area in Laugardalur, a geothermally heated outdoor swimming pool and sculptures crafted by Ásmundur Sveinsson.

The Golden Circle Classic This popular excursion introduces you to some of the best known natural phenomena in Iceland. We start by visiting Nesjavellir a high temperature geothermal area in the scenic landscape of Lake Þingvallavatn. From there we go to the Þingvellir National Park, where the Icelandic parliament Alþingi was founded in the year 930 AD, which makes it the oldest known still-functioning parliament in the world. Þingvellir is geologically remarkable and you can see tectonic plate boundaries there that form a breathtaking scenery. We continue to the beautiful waterfall Gullfoss where we can walk so close to the edge that we might feel the mist of the glacial water on our faces. From there we journey towards the geothermal area around the incredible spouting hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur. We proceed to Skálholt church, the ancient seat of the Icelandic bishops. From there we travel towards Hveragerði, a small and charming horticultural village. Due to weather and road conditions we cannot guarantee visits to Nesjavellir in the winter season.

Iceland From Below

an underground adventure
Available throughout the year, this tour takes you to unique sights of Iceland’s most spectacular lava tube caves and craters. We will enter through narrow cave entrances and find they reveal extraordinary scenery of colours and lava formations. These beautiful, natural phenomena were created when the surface lava hardened and the fluid lava continued to flow in tubes underneath. You will also see natural stalactites and many different rock formations making this nearly an indescribable experience. The caves become wide and high and in many places the floor is quite even. However, the trip can become rather difficult so we recommend you bring good walking shoes or hiking boots which are suitable for uneven lava surfaces. Respect for nature and safety are our main concerns. There are no handrails, lights or any pre-installed tools in or around the caves. We rely completely on the equipment we carry and that people respect our guidelines. This tour is suitable for all who can walk on uneven surfaces and at times, on all four. Note: This tour is not recommended for children under the age of 10.

South coast & Þórsmörk We begin this tour by driving over the mountain heath Hellisheiði towards Selfoss town and then along the south shore to Seljalandsfoss waterfall. From there our journey continues towards the interior to our main attraction, Þórsmörk (i.e. Thor’s Woodland), a nature reserve shielded on three sides by glaciers and mountains. The glacial melt-off forms rivers that have to be crossed on the way, but those can change in a matter of hours from an innocent stream into a thunderous torrent. Some days the crossing is quite challenging or even impossible but our skilled drivers are very experienced in these driving conditions and will take you safely across the rivers. Once there we make a stop to enjoy the breathtaking scenery with its multitude of small gullies and valleys, clad with low birch-trees that create seemingly endless possibilities for the nature lover. Various hiking routes are available there and everybody can find a suitable one. On our way back we will stop at the rugged gorge of Stakkholtsgjá for a short hike. This tour is truly unforgettable for the nature lover at heart and ideal as a hiking trip. During the hardest winter months, it might not be possible to access Þórsmörk. Then we will visit Vík village with it’s black sand beaches and the magnificent Skógarfoss waterfall.

We journey through the beautiful countryside of southern Iceland and proceed into the highlands through Þjórsárdalur valley and visit Hjálparfoss waterfall. Landmannalaugar’s colourful mountains are formed by centuries of volcanic activity in the area and the picturesque natural landscape in this raw climate is simply breathtaking. While there, we’ll enjoy a relaxing bath in a natural warm pool which was created when many hot and cold springs in the area combined. The tour continues back to the west and past Iceland’s most infamous and active volcano, Hekla, which was believed to be the gateway to hell during the Middle Ages. The Aurora Borealis
With Iceland Excursions - The Local Expert
Aurora borealis is the scientific name of a display of colored lights in the sky, which is commonly called Northern Lights. These are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. A similar display, called the aurora australis, occurs in the atmosphere above the South Pole. Typically the aurora appears either as a diffuse glow or as “curtains” that approximately extend in the east-west direction. At some times, they form “quiet arcs” or “coronas”; at others (“active aurora”), they evolve and change constantly. The colors range from greenish, to purples, blues and reds. No two lights are ever alike. Auroras form in oval rings over the Earth’s magnetic poles. During an aurora, rings form at the North and South poles at the same time. Even near the poles, someone on earth can only see a tiny section of the auroral oval. The auroras can best be seen during the winter months when the sky is clear and the moon is not too bright. The auroras are a natural phenomenon and do not occur on a daily basis. We operate this tour only when weather conditions are favourable and we spend up to 5 hours searching for the lights. We, however, cannot guarantee that lights can be seen on any particular tour.
Northern lights mystery Join us for a mysterious trip, on a dark winter night. Any time from the onset of autumn darkness until the light nights of spring we can witness one of nature’s most spectacular displays; the phenomenon which we call the Northern Lights. Far from the glow of the city, we hunt for the elusive Aurora Borealis – known as the Northern Lights. Together we will search for these magnificent auroras. On a clear night, we may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heaven in dramatic shapes, colours, patterns and sizes. The Northern Lights are visible from September through April but can only be seen on a clear night. Therefore, we reserve the right to cancel this tour if the evening sky is heavily clouded or weather conditions are not favourable. Before we start this tour we always check the weather forecast around the south western part of Iceland. From experience, we decide where each journey will lead us, for the best possibilities to see the Northern Lights.

Super Jeep What is unique about these jeeps is that they have been modified into so-called Super Jeeps. The jeeps are equipped with huge tires but that is only a minor part of the modification. They are rebuilt so they can drive on glaciers, heavy snow, deserts, over glacial rivers and on difficult highland tracks. All super jeeps are driven by professional drivers.

landmannalaugar & mt. hekla by super jeep
A unique and unforgettable Super Jeep excursion to this striking “jewel of the interior”. Landmannalaugar is the pearl of Iceland’s central highlands, situated in a valley between colourful, steep mountains at the high and dark edge of the Laugahraun lava field. The route passes through Þjórsárdalur valley and crosses lava fields of different eras, small rivers and volcanic craters, which make up a peculiar lunar-type landscape. Landmannalaugar is surrounded by colorful mountains formed by centuries of volcanic activity in the area and is indescribably beautiful; you just have to see it for yourself. The mountains are split with gullies and gorges that are ideal for hiking. At Landmannalaugar you can have an outside bath in a natural warm pool where many hot and cold springs have mixed together. On our way back to Reykjavík we drive along the roots of Mt. Hekla. Hekla is the queen of mountains on the island and has erupted on average every 10 years in the 20th century, the last time in the year 2000. The frequent eruptions have created dramatic scenery with thick layers of ash and lava in the surrounding area. Then you return to Reykjavik in the late afternoon. We reserve the right to alter the itinerary according to weather and road conditions.

super jeep safari The volcanic Reykjanes peninsula is a mystical area, just southwest of Reykjavik. Travellers can let the imagination flow free when driving through the vast lava fields with its strange shadows and rock formations. In geological terms the peninsula is quite young and signs of volcanic activity such as lava craters, black lava fields with special vegetation of moss and lichen and impressive volcanoes are to be seen in many places on the peninsula. One of the tour highlights is a drive on the beaches of Lake Kleifarvatn. Following the big earthquakes in the year 2000 the water level of the lake decreased by five meters but is now slowly reaching its normal level again. We will also visit Krísuvík which is situated close to the southern end of the lake and has innumerable small hot springs, mud pots, boiling pools and other types of geothermal activity. We reserve the right to alter the itinerary according to weather and road conditions.

golden circle super jeep tour & snowmobile activity The Golden Circle tour allows visitors to get in touch with some of Iceland’s most famous and exciting natural phenomena. Our first stop is at Þingvellir National Park, which is one of Iceland’s most significant historical sites because it was there that Iceland’s first parliament was founded in the year 930 AD. From Þingvellir we head along mountain tracks toward the worldrenowned geothermal area around Geysir hot spring, the one spouting hot spring on Earth after which all other spouting hot springs are named. From there we continue on to Gullfoss where your proximity to its edge is so close you can feel the spray of the glacial water on your face. Next we kick the action into higher gear to get even closer to Iceland’s nature and go for a snowmobiling tour on Langjökull, Iceland’s second largest glacier. After an action-packed day we drive through the countryside, make a pass by the greenhouse village in Hveragerði, from which many of Iceland’s vegetables are supplied. We reserve the right to alter the itinerary according to weather and road conditions. Please note that the operation period/location is dependent on snow layers. It is essential to present a valid driver’s licence in order to drive a snowmobile. Price is according to 2 persons per snowmobile.
