Pr a ctical I nfor m ation
Iceland and its people Iceland is the second largest island in Europe (103,000 sq.km). The first inhabitants arrived from Scandinavia and the British Isles more than 1100 years ago. Its present population is approximately 320,000, nearly half of which lives in or around the capital, Reykjavík. The rest of the population is distributed around the coastal fringes, leaving the centre of the country uninhabited. Icelanders are proud of their language, which hardly differs from the Old Norse spoken by the first settlers. Well educated and well travelled, most Icelanders are multilingual, which makes communication relatively easy for English speaking visitors.
Business hours As a general rule offices are open from 9 am to 5 pm (8 am to 4 pm during the summer months) on weekdays. Shops are generally open from 9 am to 6 pm on weekdays. Several supermarkets and shops in malls have extended opening hours and are also open on weekends.
Credit cards Debit and credit cards are accepted by most organizations and are widely used. The major cards in Iceland are VISA and Eurocard/MasterCard, although other cards are accepted in some places.
Climate The climate in Iceland is warmer than the name suggests; thanks to the Gulf Stream, which flows past the south and east coast on its way north. The summers are cool, with an average temperature of about 12°C in the hottest month, but the winters are mild, with an average temperature of about 0°C in the coldest month. However, the weather is very unpredictable and can change very abruptly. Good equipment and clothing is therefore essential during your holiday.
Clothing Clothing should include lightweight woollens, a thick sweater or cardigan, rainwear, windbreaker and sturdy hiking shoes, but we also recommend that you bring lighter clothes for nicer weather. For those heading for the interior or camping warm underwear and socks are a must. There are many opportunities for swimming and bathing in thermal waters, so a bathing suit should be brought along at any time of the year.
Currency exchange The Icelandic monetary unit is the “krona”. All Icelandic banks (open 9:15 am to 4 pm) provide money exchange as well as the Change Group Iceland at the Tourist Information Center in Reykjavík (open from 8:30 am to 8 pm 7 days a week). Exchange banks are also operated in the arrival and duty free areas of the airport.

This popular excursion introduces you to some of the best known natural phenomena in Iceland. We start by visiting Nesjavellir a high temperature geothermal area in the scenic landscape of Lake Þingvallavatn. From there we go to the Þingvellir National Park, where the Icelandic parliament Alþingi was founded in the year 930 AD, which makes it the oldest known still-functioning parliament in the world. Þingvellir is geologically remarkable and you can see tectonic plate boundaries there that form a breathtaking scenery. We continue to the beautiful waterfall Gullfoss where we can walk so close to the edge that we might feel the mist of the glacial water on our faces. From there we journey towards the geothermal area around the incredible spouting hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur. We proceed to Skálholt church, the ancient seat of the Icelandic bishops. From there we travel towards Hveragerði, a small and charming horticultural village. Due to weather and road conditions we cannot guarantee visits to Nesjavellir in the winter season. Our Saturday departures are guided in English and German.

This evening tour gives you the opportunity to see the highlights of Iceland under a bright and charming evening sky, reflecting a different light on the landscape.
Available throughout the year, this tour takes you to unique sights of Iceland’s most spectacular lava tube caves and craters.
We start by visiting the Þingvellir National Park, where the Icelandic parliament Alþingi was established in the year 930 AD and which was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in August 2004.
We will enter through narrow cave entrances and find they reveal extraordinary scenery of colors and lava formations. These beautiful, natural phenomena were created when the surface lava hardened and the fluid lava continued to flow in tubes underneath.
We continue to the beautiful Gullfoss waterfall in the golden rays of the setting sun. From there we visit the geothermal area around the incredible spouting geysers of Geysir and Strokkur, echoing into the peaceful evening glow. This is a great opportunity to experience romantic tranquility in a beautiful area that touches everyone.
79 €
You will also see natural stalactites and many different rock formations making this nearly an indescribable experience. The caves become wide and high and in many places the floor is quite even. However, the trip can become rather difficult so we recommend you bring good walking shoes or hiking boots which are suitable for uneven lava surfaces. Respect for nature and safety are our main concerns. There are no handrails, lights or any pre-installed tools in or around the caves.

At Þingvellir, the Icelandic parliament Alþingi was founded in the year 930 AD, which makes it the oldest known still-functioning parliament in the world. We visit the impressive waterfall Gullfoss and the geothermal area around Geysir with its spouting geysers. The tour takes us through fertile agricultural areas and we visit Hveragerdi village with its numerous greenhouses. This tour is not recommended for children under the age of 6.

south coast & þórsmörk
the viking horse & the blue lagoon direct
We begin this tour by driving over the mountain heath Hellisheiði towards Selfoss town and then along the south shore to Seljalandsfoss waterfall.
This combination of the Viking horse riding tour and AH29 is for those who don’t have too much time but still want to make the most of it.
From there our journey continues towards the interior to our main attraction, Þórsmörk (i.e. Thor’s Woodland), a nature reserve shielded on three sides by glaciers and mountains. The glacial melt-off forms rivers that have to be crossed on the way, but those can change in a matter of hours from an innocent stream into a thunderous torrent. Some days the crossing is quite challenging or even impossible but our skilled drivers are very experienced in these driving conditions and will take you safely across the rivers.
Make your dream come true and get acquainted with the Icelandic horse. It is a breed that has remained virtually unchanged since the Vikings brought it to Iceland in the 9th century. Enjoy a one hour riding tour on the outskirts of the capital.
Once there we make a stop to enjoy the breathtaking scenery with its multitude of small gullies and valleys, clad with low birch-trees that create seemingly endless possibilities for the nature lover. Various hiking routes are available there and everybody can find a suitable one. On our way back we will stop at the rugged gorge of Stakkholtsgjá for a short hike. This tour is truly unforgettable for the nature lover at heart and ideal as a hiking trip.
After the healthy experience, we head to the Blue Lagoon. Once there you have a variety of recreational options such as bathing in the milky blue water, massage and spa treatments or simply walking in the Blue Lagoon’s spectacular surroundings. For a unique experience indulge yourself in an outdoor massage or one of the spa treatments available. We recommend booking these well in advance by calling +354 420 8800. Return according to transfer schedule, see page 13.

landmannalaugar by bus
Northern lights mystery
We depart from Reykjavik and head to the geothermal area Landmannalaugar, often referred to as “The Pearl of the Central Highlands”.
Join us for a mysterious trip, on a dark winter night. Any time from the onset of autumn darkness until the light nights of spring we can witness one of nature’s most spectacular displays; the phenomenon which we call the Northern Lights.
We journey through the beautiful countryside of southern Iceland and proceed into the highlands through Þjórsárdalur valley and visit Hjálparfoss waterfall. Landmannalaugar’s colorful mountains are formed by centuries of volcanic activity in the area and the picturesque natural landscape in this raw climate is simply breathtaking. While there, we’ll enjoy a relaxing bath in a natural warm pool which was created when many hot and cold springs in the area combined. The tour continues back to the west and past Iceland’s most infamous and active volcano, Hekla, which was believed to be the gateway to hell during the Middle Ages. The volcano has had frequent eruptions in the past years and has left thick layers of ash and pumice over the landscape. Return to Reykjavík over Hellisheiði mountain heath.

Far from the glow of the city, we hunt for the elusive Aurora Borealis – known as the Northern Lights. Together we will search for these magnificent auroras. On a clear night, we may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heaven in dramatic shapes, colors, patterns and sizes. The Northern Lights are visible from September through April but can only be seen on a clear night. Therefore, we reserve the right to cancel this tour if the evening sky is heavily clouded or weather conditions are not favorable. Before we start this tour we always check the weather forecast around the south western part of Iceland. From experience, we decide where each journey will lead us, for the best possibilities to see the Northern Lights.

south coast & jökulsárlón This tour takes us along the beautiful south shore of Iceland to the extraordinary glacial lagoon, Jökulsárlón. We will pass some charming villages, Skaftafell National Park, Seljalandsfoss waterfall and Skógarfoss waterfall. Just before we reach the lagoon we pass Iceland’s biggest volcano, Öræfajökull glacier which has the highest peak of the island, Hvannadalshnjúkur (2110 m). After we arrive at the lagoon we have some time to view this stunning area before we take a boat tour on the lagoon. The boats that carry us are no ordinary boats as they are capable of driving short distances on land as well as sailing on the water. Jökulsárlón started to form in the early nineteen twenties and is getting bigger every year. You will see many amazing blocks of ice that have broken off Europe’s biggest glacier, Vatnajökull, and sail slowly towards the ocean which is only a kilometer away.

snæfellsnes national park Snæfellsnes peninsula is a beautiful area located on the west side of Iceland and offers many recreational activities. Our first stops at the peninsula are at Gerduberg, a columnar basalt cliff in Hnappadal, and Ölkelda, a natural spring of clean drinking water. We then continue our bus tour around the peninsula and through the national park. On our way we will stop at Arnarstapi and enjoy its extraordinary shores and scenery. Nature lovers enjoy the spectacular landscapes and peculiarities of the surroundings and spend time hiking and bird watching along the precipitous shoreline where it is quite common to see seals. We continue our journey to the National Park where you find many beaches and amazing bird life. In this area there are many signs of ancient eruptions from the volcano with various lava formations and craters. Snæfellsjökull glacier is a dormant volcano which attracts thousands of people each year. Some visitors assemble here regularly each summer to enjoy the energy radiation, as they believe it to be one of earths seven energy spots. Before we return to Reykjavík we visit Stykkishólmur village by Breiðafjörður bay. Tours AH38 and AH39 share the same bus transfer to Snæfellsnes. The tours split up after the visit to Gerduberg and Ölkelda and are joined again in Stykkisholmur for the return trip to Reykjavík.

Our first stop is at Þingvellir National Park, which is one of Iceland’s most significant historical sites because it was there that Iceland’s first parliament was founded in the year 930 AD. From there we continue on to Gullfoss where your proximity to its edge is so close you can feel the spray of the glacial water on your face. Next we kick the action into higher gear to get even closer to Iceland’s nature and go for a snowmobiling tour on Langjökull, Iceland’s second largest glacier. After an action-packed day we drive through the countryside, make a pass by the greenhouse village in Hveragerði, from which many of Iceland’s vegetables are supplied. 4x4 iceland adventure You will start by climbing on board one of the different types of Super Jeeps, a 4x4 vehicle, which has been specially modified by Icelanders to be able to travel on the rugged tracks of their country. Within minutes of leaving the Capital, these magnificent vehicles are put to the test by effortlessly climbing the 335 m/1,100 feet to the top of “’Ulfarsfell” – and once at the summit, the visitor is greeted by the sight of, quite literally, the city at their feet. We continue, following the hot water pipe line to its source, that is to say, the apparently dormant volcano Hengill and nearby Lake Thingvallavatn (Iceland’s largest natural lake). We pause at the viewpoint situated on the flanks of the volcano itself, taking the opportunity to gaze over the geothermal plant and to view the surreal landscape dotted with steam vents and bore holes. The 4X4s will then bring you along the river Sog with its hydropower plants onwards to the hot spring village of Hveragerdi. Our expert drivers take you over the ancient lava plateau of Hellisheidi. On the way, if conditions allow, we will get a last bumpy ride on the “Thousand Waters Route”, splashing through the river.
