Your Map to College Success Going to college is like visiting a foreign country – here’s how to get around and enjoy your time!

Prior to Beginning your Adventure… Plan in advance Attend orientations, see catalog/campus Meet with advisors, review YC website Know & plan how much time you have Understand financial options

College Customs & Language Printed/Internet materials: College catalog, course descriptions, code of conduct, syllabus Interaction: You’ll learn quicker about college life if you jump in and get involved with campus activities, see advisors, speak with instructors & make friends than you will if you ‘hit & run’

Different Customs… In high school, instructors usually discussed everything that you needed to know for tests IN class… In college, about 75% of learning occurs outside of the classroom, through your studies, research, homework, study groups, etc. Plan 2-3 hrs per credit hour per week of homework, and do it.

Math Quiz… If you take 12 credit hours per semester, how many hours of studying should you expect to do each week? 12 x 2.5 = 30 hrs + 12 hrs in class = 42 This is why we call it ‘full-time’

Your Syllabus is Your Class Map Each class has a syllabus with class requirements, text, assignments and due dates, tests/quizzes/papers, etc. Listing everything for all of your classes in a planner/calendar will help keep track of it all (color code by class!) This helps you see conflicts &
