On Friday at 7:20am, West Merritt neighbours walking their dogs found a man down in Voght Park, between the berm & track near Canford Ave. The area was cordoned off for the entire day while forensic investigators combed the area & RCMP canvassed nearby residents for any info on the incident. They confirmed on Saturday the identity of the 28-year old Merritt resident as being Nasir “Nas” Ahmed Khokhar. He was known to police. RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit (MCU) from Kelowna, Kamloops Forensic Identification and RCMP Police Dog Services assisted the investigation. A team of approx. 15 investigators is working on the case. Cause of death will be determined once an autopsy has been completed. Investigators are seeking public assistance, asking that if anyone has any information regarding this incident or noted anything suspicious on the evening of September 24 until the morning of September 25 in the area of Voght Park, to please contact the Merritt RCMP, 378-4262 or Crime Stoppers, 1800-222-TIPS(8477).

Breastfeeding mothers and their supporters are invited to attend the Breastfeeding Challenge in Merritt on Saturday, October 3, at the Family Place, 2175 Nicola Ave., 10:30am registration, 11am latch on! The theme this year for World Breastfeeding Week is Breastfeeding - A Vital Response, referring to the key role breastfeeding plays in times of disasters, such as fires and earthquakes, when clean water and appropriate food are often in short supply. Lactation consultants and public health nurses are available at Public Health Units across Interior Health to assist mothers and infants during the breastfeeding years, and to ensure families have all of the help they need to give babies the best start in life. The Breastfeeding Challenge is sponsored by the Quintessence Foundation, a nonprofit group providing education to parents and professionals about breastfeeding.
