The marchers on their way to Nkwe Platinum’s offices in Steelpoort (top), signing the memorandum (bottom) and displaying their grievances. They asked the company to halt activities for a week.
28 AUGUST 2009 A number of disgruntled community members from Ga Mpuru travelled to mining Company, Nkwe Platinum’s offices in Steelpoort on Wednesday, urging the company’s controlling shareholder, Genorah Resources to halt prospecting on the farm Garatouw, which is roughly situated between Modikwa Platinum Mine (Anglo Platinum) and Marula Platinum (Impala Platinum). Genorah also controls prospecting on four other farms adjacent to Garatouw. The prospecting on the five farms forms part of a bankable feasability study which should be completed before the end of the year. After that, should mining proceed in the area, Xstrata Alloys will acquire a 50 percent stake in a joint venture with Nkwe Platinum. Protesting in front of the Nkwe Platinum offices in the industrial area in Steelpoort, the group had a memorandum ready to hand to Nkwe Platinum’s community relations manager in Steelpoort, Mr Phetole Mohale. According to the group the company did not keep to an agreement with the community, especially with regards to Garatouw. The group inter alia alleges that the company is dividing the community by bribing some community members, that a lot of money with regard to noise compensation and surface rental is outstanding which should be paid immediately. The group wants the company to suspend prospecting activities for a week and to consult and liaise with an elected coordinating committee and to recognise the community liaison officer from within the community of Ga Ratouw. According to the group, the company should attend to two grave sites that were allegedly demolished and destroyed by the company’s activities as well as an initiation school yard that was destroyed by the prospecting contractors. The group also want the company to repair access roads and other infrastructure allegedly damaged by a contractor. Referring to previous conflict, the group wants the company to withraw court interdicts obtained against certain community members. The march and protest in front of Nkwe’s gate went quite peacefully and Mr Mohale duly received a memorandum from the group, whereafter the group dispersed in front of the gate. Mr Mohale told the newspaper that the company did nothing wrong, and that it is the community whose house is not in order. He said that the company kept to the legal requirements as administered by the Department of Mines and Energy and that the company cannot be held responsible if community structures, as established by law, do not function as it should. He said the memorandum will be forwarded to the company’s headquarters.

Women gather for district economic summit
The executive mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe, has announced that the district will soon spearhead the establishment of development forums that will focus on mining and tourism. Addressing more than 100 women during the Women Economic Development Summit at CN Phatudi FET College in Praktiseer near Burgersfort last week Saturday, Cllr Magabe said that organising an Agricultural Summit for the district was also in the pipeline. Magabe mentioned these initiatives on the backdrop of Sekhukhune having mining, transport, agriculture and tourism as its three main economic pillars. The summit aimed to galvanise women of the district to explore entrepreneurial opportunities that are on offer by inviting successful women in fields such as construction, agriculture, mining to impart their knowledge and experiences. “We are engaging with mining houses on a regular basis to pave a way for processes that seek to benefit all who live in the district, the province and the country. And, as we do so, we will emerge with a strategy that will benefit our people and we are therefore pursuing an ideal of having a Mining Forum,” Magabe said. A Mining Summit will take place on 09 September 2009 near Burgersfort. “The Tourism Forum will integrate all our tourism and heritage wealth into projects that will benefit the people of this
district,” he said. “We are also seeking to revive the spirit of tilling the land, and urge our women to start planting vegetables in their backyards.” Mayor Magabe also urged women to take advantage of the district’s 2009/2010 budget of about R1-billion in order to organise themselves and venture into businesses offered by government. “Through phase 2 of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), we envisage that more women will be empowered by acquiring the necessary skills while making a living and developing our communities,” he said. The executive mayor encouraged the women to take keen interest in developments on the R9 billion De Hoop Dam that is under construction in Ga-Malekane near Burgersfort because it offers vast business opportunities. Magabe said that the municipality has resolved to effect a turn-around strategy in as far as the awarding of tenders in time, payment of contractors and signing of certificates for contractors were concerned. Mayor Magabe said government had shown its seriousness about turning rural areas like Sekhukhune into thriving centres of development by creating the Rural Development Ministry. “I must emphasise that women empowerment is not about elite, urban and township women. We need to impact positively on the lives of thousands of ordinary women in our district,” Magabe said. The summit was concluded with a gala dinner.

GTM also celebrates the month of women The Greater Tubatse Municipality has joined the rest of the country in celebrating Women’s month. The Municipality held Women’s Day celebration at Mošate of Ga-Kgosigadi Kgwete, Ga-Kgwete village on Wednesday 26 August 2009, under the theme “Basadi, Mmogo re ka kgona”. The event brought together more than two hundred local women who were encouraged to work together to create jobs through exploring domestic tourism opportunities. Issues of HIV/Aids and Rural Development were also highlighted. The first Lady of Greater Tubatse Municipality, Mme Borelelo Mamekoa, said women should continue to work hard to make the world a better place. Mme Mamekoa said August is a month to remember the role played by women during the struggle, especially those women who marched against pass laws in 1956 to the Union Buildings. She said the spirit of togetherness presented by the 1956 women should continue amongst the women of today to achieve more. Mme Mamekoa also called upon women to support each other, believe in one another’s leadership skills and potential. She said she appreciated the victory of Caster Mokgadi Semenya, the gold medallist. “Semenya has made South Africa proud by becoming the world’s top athlete during the 2009 Wold Atheletics Championship which took place in Berlin, Germany. The alleged reports that Caster is not a woman were unnecessary and very much unacceptable”. Greater Tubatse Mayor, Ralepane Mamekoa, in no man’s land, saying he attended the celebrations as a husband, not a mayor(left). A local choir entertained the women, while the guests also visited Kgwete Home Based Care Creché (botttom photographs).

They were elected through a nomination and voting process. The new prefects are (back): Paul Joya, Keletso Manyaka, Klaas Mphego, Joseph Khoza. Middle: Florence Mogane, Tiisetso Maphanga, Lebo Ntwampe and Tiego Molatudi. Front: Fatima Noor Mohamed, Feroza Choonara, Praise Benguta and Galeshewe Phaswane.
The question remains... At many of the four- and three-way crossings in Burgersfort robots are being installed. At the moment they are still covered in plastic and not functional. The question however remains whether this will solve the traffic problems. See what our readers are thinking on page 10.

Beide vertonings was reeds teen Woensdag uitverkoop.

Do you now go with the (better?) flow? Road works seem to be a never ending part of life in Burgersfort. Upgrading of the R37 is still continuing. Speed humps were installed and later dug up again to be reduced in height. The ‘great wall’ of Burgersfort was constructed to restrict illegal crossings and now robots are being installed. We asked readers whether they can feel the difference that the upgrading has created so far, and whether they feel the traffic lights will be the cherry on top to ensure a smooth ride through town.
“The robots will cause more traffic problems. They are next to each other and you know how Burgersfort’s traffic already is,” said Mr Solly Shigange.
Ms. Esther Makale said: “It will be better with the robots”.
Me. By haar is Amelaine.
Mr Petrus Lewane said: “I think it will be better. The stop signs are not working. Burgersfort will be a good town with robots everywhere”.
Mnr.
Mr Tony Chinheya said: “I think the robots will make a difference. The system of first come, first serve with the stop streets is not working”.
“Nee, dit is hopeloos op die verkeerde plekke (die robotte). Waar die robotte nou is, is nie krisis verkeer nie. Daar onder by Calvin en Engen is daar honderde voetgangers en baie meer verkeer wat gereguleer moet word. ‘n Robot daar sal definitief ‘n verskil maak aan die opeenhoping van verkeer elke dag en die kinders wat elke dag heen en weer oor die pad moet gaan skool toe,” sê me. Lizzie Roetz.
Me. Charmagne Wolmerans sê: “Robotte gaan ‘n baie groot verskil maak. Dis op die oomblik nog baie deurmekaar”.
Me.
Mr Mandla Tjia said: “The road was only upgraded from the Steelpoort junction to the suburbs on the other side of town. It is making a difference, but there is still too much traffic coming from the villages”.
Right: Mr MCJ Serokolo said: “I think it’s better, although Burgersfort is challenged with traffic problems. I think it is because the town was not prepared for this huge and quick development.”
Blackie Swart. By hom is me. Belinda Swart en Ruan.
Feedback on last week’s subject: Should obtaining a drivers licence become part of the grade 12 curriculum?
Tumelo Lesese said: “It will be best for training course to because at the traffic stations, the officials are selling it in secret. We can’t pass unless we give them money in secret. They make sure we never get it”.

2 Vol velde
