Aurum pro-active The Aurum Institute, a South African, non-profit, public benefit, specialist research and health systems management organisation, which focuses on TB and HIV prevention, treatment, and care, has embarked on a campaign to have all its personnel tested for HIV/AIDS before World AIDS Day on 1 December, also at the organisation’s branch in Burgersfort. What make the Burgersfort branch of Aurum unique is that personnel decided not only to test for HIV/AIDS, but to test each other, the only Aurum branch thus far to do so. The group in Burgersfort proceeded with their tests at their premises last Wednesday, going through all the procedures, including pre-and post-test counselling. Not only was HIV testing done, but blood pressures were taken and blood sugar level tests done to see whether there is any indication of diabetes. While the testing was underway, staff from Aurum in Gauteng arrived, bringing with them messages of goodwill from other Aurum branches in an envelope with a handprint in red on it with the Aurum slogan for this year’s HIV/AIDS campaign (see front page). The personnel held a candle lighting ceremony before testing resumed. Each individual also marked a barometer of all Aurum personnel tested with a cross after their tests. Aurum has an international reputation for its work in the fields of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS and is the recipient of research and other grants from South African and international agencies and institutions for this work. Aurum is based in Johannesburg, with over 450 staff members, operations throughout the country and collaborations across the globe. The work that the Aurum Institute is doing in Burgersfort is: Partnering with the local clinic in Burgersfort and assist them with the necessary resources to do TB screening and HIV testing, care and treatment. Together with the Taxi Association representatives and Trader representatives, working out the best way to provide medical screening for taxi drivers and traders. Providing medical screening services to retail companies and small businesses in and around Burgersfort and Steelpoort. Partnering with mining houses around Burgersfort to provide services to contractors or family members in need of testing, care and treatment. Working with school principals to promote abstinence and delayed sexual debut with school children. Responding to requests by communities for assistance with TB screening and HIV campaigns. The institute says testing will create a ripple effect of goodwill and for every test done a school uniform will be donated to a needy child in homes identified in programme areas in Burgersfort, Klerksdorp, Welkom, Tembisa and Johannesburg.

A walk with sport heroes against Aids The Sports Heroes Walk Against HIV/Aids initiative visited Burgersfort on Sunday, 22 November as part of their 1 751km route through Limpopo. This route is walked by various athletes over a 16-day period. The group which includes athletes such as Desiree Ellis, Noko Motlou, Daleen Terblanche, Evelina Tshabalala, Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, Willie Mtolo, Bradley Grant-Smith, Baby Jake Matlala and Ruben Ramolife visited Lebowakgomo before taking the road to Burgersfort. Major confusion regarding the venue for the event in Burgersfort delayed the start with several hours and led to the cancellation of some of the planned items. According to pamphlets distributed the event was due to take place at Laerskool Burgersfort. On Sunday morning this was however changed to the Tswelopele irrigation grounds. Three hours after the first part of the event was due to start a team started pitching tents at the irrigation grounds. In haste portable toilets were brought to the grounds. For most of the day however people had to do without a source of water. Bottled water was delivered to the event during the speeches of the various counsellors and sports heroes. As far as Platinum Gazette could find out, Laerskool Burgersfort did not receive the requested deposit for use of their grounds and confirmation from the organisers that the event will in fact take place. The last minute changes left councillors

red in the face and making public excuses at the event once it finally started. The event started with a short walk by the sport heroes and people attending the event. Once at the grounds the day was opened with the national anthem. The sports heroes were introduced and various speakers received a chance behind the microphone. Entertainment items were moved to the end of the programme. Coaching clinics and soccer matches that was due to take place did not materialise according to plan. The sport heroes’ website which is following the route from town to town in pictures is without a single photograph or inscription of the Burgersfort event. The only mention in the daily reports is that the group will head to Burgersfort. The

next entry jump to the visit to Phalaborwa and Tzaneen. The Sport Heroes Walk Against HIV/Aids is a non-profit, fund raising initiative that has been running for eight years. The project has during its existence distributed millions of rands worth of sport

goods and material to sport clubs and Aids hospices and clinics across the country. Along their route they hold sport clinics in underprivileged communities and visit HIV/Aids care centres. The group will end their walk on World Aids Day on 1 December in Thohoyandou.

Some people had quite original ways to ensure they are protected from the sun.

Market on Saturday, 28 November in front of OK Minimark from 09:00 - 14:00.

Cllr. M. Manamela was the keynote speaker.

Local athlete Daniël Makua was one of the locals to join the walk.

Slow progress at Mapareng

Avoid the holiday rush. The electric pumpstation at Mapareng (top), with the empty reservoir (top, right) on the side of the mountain.

Bring your vehicle to Volkswagen Highlands and trust us to ensure your vehicle is in perfect condition for a safe trip these holidays.

The diesel waterpump at Mapareng village between Ohrigstad and Leboeng adjacent to the R36 has been repaired and started working on Wednesday. A large number of Mapareng’s residents appeared in court in Leboeng recently because of their service delivery protests actions. One of the things they are unhappy about is the fact that a river flows next to their village, but there is no water in the reservoir, meaning dry taps at their houses. Two pumps are used at the village, a diesel powered pump and an electric pump. Although the relevant authorities have been giving attention to the issue during the past week, the elctric pump was still not working at the time of going to press, meaning that full reticulation has still not been effected. The court case against the residents who appeared in court has been postponed till January. Other main issues on the list of residents’ grievances are a lack of electricity and a shabby and abandoned RDP housing project.

Volkswagen Highlands’ workshop and parts departments are ready to service, repair and oversee your vehicle to ensure that it is in peak condition this holiday season. The workshop can do minor services on Saturdays. Bookings for this is essential to avoid disappointment.

Clampdown on illegal advertising signs The self-made road sign to Dresden on the left may not exactly qualify as an illegal advertising sign, but it is certeainly unique and draws attention. In a quick move this week the Greater Tubatse Municipality has given notice that the By-laws regarding outdoor advertising control are now implemented. Owners of illegal advertsing signs are given until 27 December this year to remove it or rik it be removed by the municipality. Owners of illegal advertising signs will then also have to bear the costs of the removing thereof by the municipality. In terms of the By-Law, only advertising signs, structures, hoardings, banners, etc. that have been approved by the council on approved sites may be erected on council land. All other signs are illegal. In terms of a municipal notice published in toady’s edition of Platinum Gazette (see p 12) a full definition of ‘advertising signs’ is contained in the By-laws and the document is available on the Greater Tubatse Municipality website on www.tubatse.gov.za . Copies are also available at the municipal offices.

Deal with debt this Christmas When you are finding that your debt is more than your income, or that you are not coping with paying back what you owe while paying the necessary living expenses you might need the help of a registered debt counsellor. A registered debt counsellor will help you with a budget and will work out a repayment schedule that will allow you to make one monthly payment and still be able to pay your living expenses such as rent and groceries. This means that the debt counseller may apply that you be placed under debt review. When you are under debt review your name will be

flagged with SA’s credit bureaus. This means that people you owe money to, won’t be able to take legal action against you, or repossess your belongings - as long as you continue to pay the lower rate that the debt counsellor negotiated with them on your behalf. Beat the debt blues this Christmas and start 2010 well!

Is government roadshows or events Government spends large amounts of money on events create awareness or celebrate issues concerning the people. One of the big celebrations that took place in the Greater Tubatse Municipal area was the National Heritage Day event. These events usually consist of entertainment, sometimes a free T-shirt or food parcel and a good dose of speeches by politicians and invited guests. These events are sometimes used to bring services to the people through mobile units, such as the home affairs mobile unit where the people can apply for their barcoded IDs. We asked readers whether they attend these events and if they think that it serves the intended purpose or that government should find another way to communicate with the people.

Mr Malizo Mtotoyi said: “I don’t go to the events, because I never know about the events”.

Ms Vicky Tobejane said: “I never attend. They don’t reach the people”.

Mr Ian Els sê: “Nee ek gaan nie. Die goed word nooit in die dorp gehou nie. Hulle moet die koerante meer gebruik om dit te adverteer”.

Ms Linda Tobias said: “They must get another way to bring the message across and use the money to help the poor people”.

Mr Percy Matsane and Ms Vinolia Wilson said: “We think it is a wake-up call for the community when an event is held. Government brings us together to embark on whatever the issue is”.

Me. Chinelle Cloete met Joanelle Cloete sê: “Die meeste mense gaan vir die kos en die partytjie. Die wat regtig omgee is in die minderheid”.

Ms Connie Mashilo said: “Maybe young people attend for the food, but mature people attend the events to learn”.

Ms Ouma Mabaso said: “They must use the money to relieve the suffering of the poor people”.

Mnr. Niel Bruwer sê: “Nee wat, hulle moet die geld liewer gebruik om die dorp skoon te maak en die bourommel te verwyder”.

Ms Lavhelesani Rasuba said: “Ja, I do attend, but I don’t think they serve the purpose. The people attend for the food and the clothes they receive”.

Mr Ben Mboweni said: “I think they must work with the community and it is good to host events. Ja, I attend”.

Ms Portia Dibakwane and Mr Morrison Moloto said: “We have not attended. We don’t thinks they reach the people”.

Ms Sekolo Mogano said: “I think it is beneficial if the people attend the event. People must respond to it. It is worth hosting”.

Ms Thandi Shai said: “This is just to waste money for nothing. They don’t do anything for the people. They must create jobs.

Me. Cindy Bruwer sê: “Ek dink nie dit bereik die mense nie. Baie mense gaan net vir die partytjie en gaan nie vir die regte redes nie”. By haar is Leanthé en Ziané.

Mr Jacob Malepe said: “I think it is a good thing. Ja, I attend. They encourage people and do not waste money”.

Mr Gift Mangena said: “No, I travel too much and don’t have time to attend those functions”.

Me. Toetie en mnr. Marius de Jager sê: “Hulle kan eerder die geld spandeer op iets anders as ‘n partytjie”. Mr Dum Khosa said: “I do attend. I think it’s one of the best tools to get the message across. Mr Josep Moime said: “The events are necessary to educate people to understand the issues and services. Any programme of government needs to be campaigned for people to understand it.

Maatlopo United still first on the log Maatlopo United Football Club continued their dominance in the two games they played last weekend. The team collected four points to strengthen their position on the Sekhukhune region’s SAB Regional league log. They are still number one. On Saturday, 21 November Maatlopo played against RT Giant Killers from Jane Furse. The game ended in a draw. Due to a too wet Ntwampe sportsground the game was played at the Magakala ground. On Sunday the team played against Sweepers and beat them 1-0. The goal was scored by Sello Zuzu in the 85th minute of the game. Tshepho Malatjie, the team’s goalkeeper, was named man of the match for his excellent saves. This weekend on 28 November, Maatlopo will host Mooihoek XI Experience at the Moroke Stadium. On 29 November they will travel to Motetema to play against Sekhukhune Celtic.
