Startup for Project Sunrise Last week Friday saw a joyful day for ASA Metals at Dilokong Chrome with the official startup of Project Sunrise, when the President of Sinosteel Mr Huang Tianwen, visited the completed expansion project. Sinosteel, a Chinese state controlled company, is the majority shareholder in ASA metals with 60 percent of the shares. The other shares is held by Limdev. ASA Metals successfully commissioned its new 600 000 ton per annum pelletising and sintering plant during July 2009 with the first sintered pellets produced at 12:20 on Sunday the 12 July. The successful commissioning of the pelletising and sintering plant signified the first major milestone in ASA Metals’ expansion. The plant will beneficiate chromite concentrate into pellets that will be supplied to the new furnaces that has just been completed. The two furnaces (top photograph) are 66 MVA closed

furnaces, each with its own pre-heaters. The utilization of pellets in the new furnaces will boost overall charge chrome production capacity to around 400 000 tons per year. The pelletising and sintering plant is scheduled to ramp up to full production by the end of the calendar year. ASA Metals has started during January 2008 with an extensive development program to increase their ferrochrome productioncapacity with 300 percent. The whole project was completed well within the timeschedule, budget and safety objectives of the project. Mr Huang and his party was hosted by the MD and CEO of ASA Metals, Mr Richard Zhang, and the COO, Mr Herman Smith, at the new completed project. They did an extensive tour of Dilokong Chrome with the highlight at the new furnaces where a plaque was unveiled by Mr Huang outside the control room and office block outside the the new furnaces.

The Executive Mayor of of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe, says it is everybody’s tresponsibility to work towrds caring for the elderly and vulnerable groups in the communnity. Speaking at the district celebration of social development month at Riba Cross last week Friday, Cllr Magabe told a huge audience that the social developkment cluster has made substantial progress in alleviating poverty and creating caring communities for older persons. He said people should acknowledge and celebrate the value and contribution of older persons in society, emphasise the message of respect for older persons as a cornerstone of our cultural background and identity, identify and record the eledst living persons in the district and facilitate support and welfare services to older persons and vulnerable groups. He said the Childrens Charter in the Constitution demand from people to take care of children and that mothers and sisters and brothers in home based care facilities should not lose hope in taking care of children in these fascilities. With regards to disabled people the district mayor told the audience that he is aware of efforts to revive the District Disabled Forum. He also called on the media to partner with NGO’s and government in the district to alleviate the plight of vulnerable groups.

Villagers with many problems Mapareng village came in the spotlight last week when the villagers blocked the R36 with rocks and 74 of them were arrested. This was in protest of not having any electricity. They are however unhappy about more than just that. A RDP project was left unfinished and many of the houses that were finished are cracking. In many places the trenches that were dug for foundations of the planned RDP houses are still visible. Some of the toilets that were constructed are sagging and standing totally scew. They are also struggling with a water reservoir that has not had water for the last year. According to residents the defective pump was replaced with another defective pump. They have brought these issues under the attention of the municipality (see document on the right), but so far these issues have not been addressed.

Blown away The ATM at Temba Garage in Burgersfort was blown to pieces on last week Friday morning just after 03:00. The robbers held the petrol attendants as well as the security guard at gunpoint while two blasts took care of opening up the ATM. The robbers who were heavily armed even showed a customer to get away from the pumps. Before they escaped with an undisclosed amount of money the men fired shots into the air. Nobody was hurt. By the time of going to press to arrests have been made.

Rough ride on Steelpoort/ Lydenburg road The sad state of the road connecting the R37 to Burgersfort and the R555 between Burgersfort and Middelburg was once again highlighted this week when frustrated motorists attached six sign boards next to the road. The road carries high volumes of heavy traffic to and from Steelpoort and are in places littered with potholes. The recent rains also contributed to the fast deteriorating state of the road. In some cases motorists find it easier to drive on the side of the road than on it. This road has not yet been listed as a priority to be rebuild at this stage. From time to time attempts are made to fix stretches of potholes, but is seems that it is impossible for those fixing potholes to keep up with the fast rate of deterioration.

In an attempt to combat crime within the Burgersfort policing area, the station has now been divided into five sectors. These sectors will be monitored by sector managers and their teams. These sector managers are also a direct line to the police in case of an emergency or when the public has information that could assist in the prevention of crime or the capture of criminals. The four sectors as shown on the right are being monitored by the various inspectors on the photographs. Sector 5 consisting of the farm areas including Motsepula, Valencia, Welgevonden and Koppie will be monitored by Insp. Mhlongo (Cell: 082 729 0261). The SAPS invites the public to build a relationship with their various sector managers and should the need arise and they are unable to get hold of the sector manager, contact the station commissioner or Capt. Ngomane on 082 462 2920. Station Commissioner, Snr. Supt. Khesha told Platinum Gazette this week that they welcome all partnerships with businesses and individuals who would like to become involved in making the community a safer place. She said that they want to improve service delivery and that is why the sector manager system was implemented as of 1 November 2009. “The sector managers know what is expected of them and that no excuses will be tolerated,” she said. In some areas the newly established system has already paid off leading to arrests.

Bejaardes blom by kwekery Die Op-en-wakker bejaardegroep van Ohrigstad het Woensdagoggend vroeg in die pad geval na die Daglelie kwekery van Susan Pretorius en haar ma, Bokkie de Beer. Bokkies Daglelie en Clivia Kwekery net buite Steelpoort is een van die area se bes bewaarde geheime wanneer dit by tuinbou kom. Susan se tuin spog met meer as 500 verskillende soort daglelies. Hierdie lelies is presies wat hulle naam sê - ‘n lelie wat ‘n dag lank hou. Die blom maak vroeg in die oggend oop en hou net vir een dag. ‘n Plant kan wel ‘n groot hoeveelheid blomme maak, maar elke blom is net oop vir een dag. Die blom kan afgepluk word en sal

mooi bly sonder dat dit in water is. Die lelies word verdeel in ‘n verskeidenheid kategorieë. Daar is byvoorbeeld die mini daglelies wat klein bly en ideaal is om voor in ‘n bedding te plant. Daar is die ‘spiders’ wat lank sliert blomblare het en die dubbel blomme val in nog ‘n kategorie. Baie het pragtige kartel randte en die kleure wissel van diep rooi tot helder geel en oranje. Van die soorte het ook verskillende kleure wat in een blom vermeng. Die plante is baie gehard en aard op die meeste plekke. In Susan se tuin blom die meeste plante reeds drie weke na dit geplant is. Sy vertel dat sy al getel het dat een plant tot 17 blomme gemaak het.

Sy versamel reeds die afgelope ses jaar daglelies en het in die afgelope jaar verskeie soorte van Amerika en ander oorsese lande ingevoer. Die bejaardes se besoek het afgeskop met ‘n toer deur die tuin waar die lelies op die oomblik pragtig blom. Daarna is hulle na die kwekery waar daar plante uitgesoek is om terug te neem huis toe, en teen R20 ‘n plant is daar lustig gekoop. Daarna is daar lekker met ‘n koppie tee gekuier en verder oor dié blomme gesels. Traffic light relief or not? During the last week, various sets of the newly installed sets of traffic lights started working. Although some (such as the one at the Steelpoort turn-off) were almost immediately put out of action again, the transition from being without proper signage to working traffic lights went relatively smooth. This week we asked readers whether they can see and feel a difference in the traffic and congestion of the traffic through Burgersfort.

Cllr Magabe said that he hoped this year’s class will raise the bar and debunk the notion that Sekhukhune District is the worst performer as far as matric results are concerned. “This is a very crucial moment in your lives. You are about to venture into your various chosen careers, and I therefore wish you well,” Cllr Magabe said. “The District of Sekhukhune has a serious shortage of people with tertiary qualification, so it becomes imperative on you to dream big to close the gap,” he added.

Beide was ook die algehele wenners van die landswye Bybelprojekkompetisie. Hier het Jan-Paul 88% behaal en Erlrica 95%.

I would like to express my concerns towards the Local Criminal Record Centre, this department is situated in the local police station in Burgersfort. On 31 October 2009 I had a burglar in my house, luckily he was caught in the act and all the items were recovered. The next morning (after a visit by the police) I was required to report to the Police station in order to give the Police my statement of the incident. At the police station I was told that the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) was contacted and are on their way to come and take possible finger prints of the burglar. This was approximately 09:30 the morning. I was further instructed not to touch anything in my house that might have been handled by the burglar as it may jeopardize the case. So the time went by and no LCRC in sight. I then decided to phone the police station to determine what time will the LCRC be attending to my house. On the first attempt no one answered the phone, on the second attempt I was required to phone again after 2 minutes as they will try and determine where the LCRC is. I was then told that the LCRC is busy with a murder case and will be at my house after they are done. Later the afternoon I phoned the police station again without any luck, only on the second attempt the phone were answered and again the police were not sure when the LCRC will pitch. I then decided to phone a Snr Superintendent to establish whether she can assist. She was surprised that no one pitched and she immediately climbed on their case, again with no luck. The same night at 19:00 one of the senior personnel at the police station phoned me to apologise for the LCRC that did not come to my house. The senior member then remarked that they will be attending to my house the next morning (which also did not happen), they only came around at approximately 15:00 that day. If this is the type of service that residents can expect from the LCRC in Burgersfort I reckon we all must be worried. I experienced firsthand the inconvenience that the LCRC placed my whole family in for the whole of a Sunday and Monday. Anonymous Burgersfort

Winterveld Ringbal Klub Die klb is weer aan die oefen en nooi persone wat graag wil speel uit om Dinsdae en Donderdae om 18:30 by hulle aan te sluit. Oefeninge is by die Waterval CVO skool (op die R37 na Lydenburg) se bane. Die klub nooi ook nie ervare spelers uit om die spel te kom geniet en leer ken. Grade 12 learners from Calvin College collected money during their 40 Days celebration. They performed all over town and aimed to raise money for a good cause. In the end the money they managed to raise was used to buy toys and things needed to Kids World at Twin City centre. These goodies were delivered to Kids World on last week Thursday. Maatlopo United wants to play against PSL teams Maatlopo United Football Club showed their superiority in the league last weekend when they beat Mokgane Junior Bucks 8-1. The goal scorers of the match were Barecho with three goals, Sipho Mashao with two goals, Stan Malegodi with two goals and Bigboy Malatjie with one goal. On 7 November Maatlopo United will host Monathetho FC from Alberton at the Moroke Stadium. Kick-off will be at 15:30 and the team invites alltheir supporters to join them for the match. On 14 November Maatlopo United FC will face previous Limpopo Vodacom Nedbank Cup champions, Peace Lovers. They play at Nylstroom for a place in the top 32 of the Nedbank Cup against the PSL teams. Die kinders het baie goed gedoen en sommige het medaljes in al die kategorieë waarin hulle meegeding het, ontvang. Daar is in Komite en Kata afdelings meegeding. Michael Kaplan het twee goue medaljes ontvang. Xander Holtzhauzen een silwer en Arend Moll ‘n goud en ‘n brons medalje.
