Wednesday morning saw a protest of another kind just outside Burgersfort where the road to Apiesdoring and Manoke was blocked by a group of residents. The tyres were burning, but this time it was a not a protest agianst poor service delivery by the government or alleged crookery by a mine. What sparked the burning tyres seems to be a problem between taxi operators in Burgersfort and surrounds and according to the protesters, what they want in terms of a taxi service. While the Police arrived en masse on the scene the protest was peacefull and most of the Police vehicles left the scene soon, while a small number of Police officers stayed behind to try and sort out the problem. One of the protesters Platinum Gazette spoke to, told the repoerter that the blocking of the road stems from the fact that the Easter Leolo Taxi Association claimed the residential areas in manoke and Apiesdoring for themselves and has driven the so-called inner city taxis from the area. (The inner city taxis or ‘floaters’ are mainly the ramshackle ones driving slowly in town while operating their hooters continiously looking for passengers). But here to problem lies, say the residents. When Eastern Leolo is busy is town and they have enough paaengers, the people from Apiesdoring and Manoke have no taxi service and they must walk to town, so the protesters felt that it would be best for Eatern Leolo to allow inner city operators to again service their areas. Acces to the area was restored later in the day. The big tree at the Apiesdoring turn-off (left) is famous for hosting the message of the day, while the protesters converge around Police officers to discuss their transport problem (bottom).

Criminals are not on holiday Beware of Robbed On 16 November 2009 the Police in Tubatse arrested two men aged 18 and 23 years in connection with common robbery. It is alleged that the two attacked a man and took his wallet and cash estimated at R650-00. The incident occurred at Riba Cross (Polaseng) on 14 November 2009. On the same day the matter was reported to the Police in Tubatse and they made follow ups that led to the arrest of the two suspects on 16 November 2009. The suspects appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate Court on 17 November 2009 and they were granted bail of R500-00 each. The case was postponed to 1 December 2009.

Housebreaking and theft On 13 November 2009 the Police in Tubatse arrested a man of (26) in

connection with house breaking and theft. The arrest follows the crime occurred in Ga Mashamothane between the 23rd and the 24th of October this year. It is alleged that the house was broken into and items such as DVD machine and clothes were stolen. On 24 October the case was reported to the Police in Tubatse and they conducted their investigations that led to the arrest of the suspect on 13 November 2009. The suspect appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 16 November 2009 and he was not granted bail. The case was postponed to 24 November 2009.

Assualted On 15 November 2009 the Police in Tubatse arrested a man (20) for assault with the purpose to inflict grievous bodily harm.

It is alleged that the suspect stabbed a 19year old man with a knife on 14 November 2009 in Riba Cross (Mandela). On 15 November 2009 the case was reported to the Police in Tubatse and they made follow ups and arrested the suspect. The suspect appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court and was released with a warning. The case was postponed to 30 November 2009. On 14 November 2009 the Police in Tubatse arrested a man (23) for assault with the purpose to inflict grievous bodily harm. It is alleged that the suspect assaulted his ex-girlfriend in Riba Cross (Legabeng) on 14 November 2009. The suspect appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 16 November 2009 and he was released with a warning. The case was postponed to 04 February 2010.

The State Vet’s rabies vaccination campaign in the Greater Tubatse Municipal Area is progressing extremely well. Last week Ohrigstad and environs were visited and a total of 206 pets were vaccinated against rabies. Of these animals 135 were dogs and 71 cats. next week week the State vet will do vaccinations in paraktiseer. On 14 and 15 September a team will be available in front of Badikila Shop next to the offices of the Department of Home Affairs accross the Dr C N Phathudi Campus of the Sekhukhune FET College. The team will be on duty from 09:00 till 16:30 on both days and people are encouraged to bring their pets to be vaccinated. The office iof the State vet says children are no longer going to school and they can bring the animals if their parents are at work. Another team will be on duty at the sam times outside the old clinic in Praktiseer. 16 December is a public holiday and no vaccinations will be done, but on 17 December the State Vet’s team will again be on duty from 09:00 till 16:30. This time they will station themselves at Shushumela (on the graveyard side) at the soccer field as well as Julius Creché in Extension 2. The State Vet says people who still want to vaccinate their pets, but misses the teams, can still take their pets to the State Vet’s offices in Praktiseer to have them vaccinated. The State Vet’s personnel are also willing to do the vaccination of difficult animals at residences.

hijackings The SAPS in Tubatse is currently experiencing a high rate of vehicle robberies or hijackings. On 12 November 2009 a 20-year old man was robbed of his vehicle by three armed men in Riba Cross. The vehicle was later recovered abandoned in Bothashoek, On 14 November 2009 another man (39) was robbed his vehicle by three armed men in Ga Mashamothane. The vehicle was also recovered abandoned in Ga Mashamothane. The Police are investigating the cases of car hijacking and the suspects are still at large. Drivers are warned to be alert at all times and not take any chances.

The oldest student was born in 1916

They can now read and write These senior citizens from Mapareng between Leboeng and Ohrigstad completed a government sponsored six month basic literacy and numeracy course. In front is Ben Mohlala, Chris Ngwendana, Angelina Marape, Asiah Sebatiane Bettie Mdhluli and Linah Ngwana. At the back are Willias Phokane, Abel Mgiba, William Rapae, Rhyles Mohlala (educator), Phina Shokane (course supervisor), Caroline Ngele (educator) and Rebotile Maibela (educator). The students went to class three days in a week for three hours and they all plann to enter an ABET course next year. The oldest student was Mr Mgiba who was born in 1916 and who is now 93 years old.

Police roadblocks are common this time of the year and this one was spotted yesterday on the Steelpoort to Burgersfort road. Inspector Mashilo, the sector policing manager for Steelpoort said the Police were keeping an eye out for anything that can possibly connected to crime such as illegal substances, stolen goods and illegal weapons. He said the roadworthiness of vehicles and validity of licences are also checked.

Greater Tubatse Municipality’s Traffic Department and other protection services, such as the Fire Brigade participated in the Arrive Alive campaign last week Friday. The focus was on general safety and safety of pedestrians. Speaking to the newspaper, Burgersfort’s Trafiic Chief, Superintendent Lekwadu, told Platinum Gazette that the new traffic lights are still in a synchronisation stage and when the red lights are blinking, motorists shoyuld treat the crossing as a four way stop, and not ignore it as has been noted with concern by his department.

Tough game: Maatlopo United FC vs Nchabeleng Young Stars On 5 December Maatlopo United FC hosted Nchabeleng Young Stars at the Magakala grounds. A strong visiting team made it clear

from the start that they will not easily hand the game to Maatlopo. Nchabeleng Young Stars scored first but after a few minutes Maatlopo

managed to equalise the score. Barecho Tsokolibana scored a controversial penalty goal. Mistakes in the Maatlopo defense gave Nchabeleng Young Stars the opportunity to score two more goals before half time. The half time score was 3-1. A pep talk by the Maatlopo coach encouraged the players to stay calm and play it cool. A fresh player or two and a boosted morale made all the difference the team’s fight to get back into the game.

Barecho scored another penalty and turned his winning streak into a hatrick in the 75th minute of the game. In the dying minutes of the game Thepelo Moropane also scored to make the score 4-3. Barecho Tsokolibana was named the man of the match. This was the last game the team will play in 2009. The next game will be against Tubatse United on 9 January 2010.
