z Service Message Begins at Home z

Member Anne Height presented her introductory talk to the club last week. Originally from Jamaica, Anne told us that she learned about giving service from her grandparents who always helped their neighbors. Anne continues the legacy with her service through Rotary. We’re glad she’s here.

“Shelter Box” Saves Lives Visiting Rotarian Jim Coleman shared with our club the wonderful work of a project that began in England and has now spawned a new partner organization here in the U.S. Shelter Box provides a 100 pound box of life saving gear that can be used anywhere in the world when disasters occur. The boxes and their deployment teams have are sent to any part of the world where they are needed. From the tsunami in Sri Lanka to an Earthquake in Pakistan to Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Shelter Boxes have provided tents, sleeping bags, cooking utensils, basic tools and even children’s coloring books to families in distress. Without having to go through governmental agencies or even other NGOs like the Red Cross, Shelter Box

Coming Events

teams can be deployed in less than 72 hours. Rotarian Keith Henderson, was here to tell us about his training and deployment to earthquake ravaged areas of Pakistan. Shelter Box began as a Rotary project in the U.K. with a goal of helping one million people in Africa. Working with Rotary Clubs in and around the effected areas, Shelter Box teams are able to distribute and educate people how to use the equipment that is provided in the box. Shelter Box is now a separate non-profit organization in both the U.K. and the U.S. Each box has a total cost of about $1,000 and is registered and tracked so sponsoring clubs can know exactly where their sponsored box has been used. Each tent is labeled with the Rotary emblem.

unusual meeting Places

The most remote place to make up a Rotary meeting is with the Rotary Club of Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Southernmost Rotary Club is Base Marambio-Antartida in Antarctica. The northernmost club is in Svalbard, Norway. Of course you can also do a makeup in your own home, by going online to attend an e-meeting. Check the RI website for details.
