News Journal #10 International I. Rescuers at China quake epicenter, digging by hand Hanwang, China Soldiers rushed to shore up a dam cracked by this week's powerful earthquake, and rescuers came by helicopter and ship Wednesday into the isolated epicenter but still were forced to dig for survivors with their bare hands. Nearly 26,000 people remained buried in collapsed buildings from Monday's magnitude 7.9 earthquake, and the death toll of almost 15,000 was expected to climb as relief operations spread into the mountains of Sichuan province. The quake triggered landslides that blocked roads to hardest-hit areas. National II. Texas cops: Substitute teacher came to class drunk Texas, USA A substitute teacher suspected of being drunk in a suburban Dallas middle school class was too intoxicated to complete a sobriety test and was arrested, authorities said. Thomas Brownlee, 56, was in a classroom Tuesday with students and another staff member for about 20 minutes, Richardson school district spokesman Tim Clark said. Another teacher suspected Brownlee was drunk and told a police officer at Parkhill Junior High. A Dallas police report states that Brownlee "had slurred speech, breath smelling of an alcoholic beverage and bloodshot eyes."

Local III. Man trapped for nearly three days in wrecked car off I-680 in North San Jose San Jose, California Trapped for three days inside his wrecked black Cadillac Escalade with a broken femur, Duc Vinh Do moved in agony, searching for his cell phone his only link to help. Thousands of cars already had passed the SUV on San Jose's busy Interstate 680, and no one had spotted it in the thick brush. Dehydrated, disoriented and in pain, Do, finally, crawled into the back seat, found his cell and punched 911. But he didn't know where he was. At first, rookie 911 operator Wendy Leslie thought Do might be delusional. San Jose police dispatcher Tara Doxie, however, stuck with Do and ended up tracking him down by "pinging" cell phone towers in the area to "triangulate" his SUV. Officers then rushed to the area. But the tracking system sent them to the west side of the highway - opposite of where Do was trapped, 20 feet off northbound I-680 at Hostetter Road. They couldn't find him. So police Sgt. Paul Cook came up with a plan: Play the "hot and cold" game with police sirens. Officers hopped in their cars, sirens blaring, and dispatchers told Do to yell into his phone when he heard them. But police still couldn't pinpoint Do's location because the sirens were still too far away from him. Next police came up with another plan. They called the Santa Clara County Sheriff to borrow the department's Star One helicopter. At 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, the helicopter pilot almost immediately spotted the black tire tracks that had veered off the road. Social IV. Miley Cyrus- accused of stealing L.A Band’s Song (Not given) Miley Cyrus has been rocked by another scandal just two weeks after the furor surrounding her provocative Vanity Fair photographs - now she's accused of ripping off someone else's song. Los Angeles band Lustra claim Cyrus' Rockstar hit is a carbon copy of their Scotty Doesn't Know tune, which appeared on the soundtrack to 2004 movie Eurotrip. And they're inviting Cyrus fans who love her song to check out "the original" on their MySpace.com web page. Lustra were alerted to the similarities between the

songs by fans and they listened to both tracks and the band mates claim the tunes are virtually the same - with separate lyrics. Sports V. Sharks fire coach Ron Wilson after another ouster San Jose, California The San Jose Sharks fired coach Ron Wilson on Monday after his club followed another outstanding regular season with yet another early exit from the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Sharks won the Pacific Division title and compiled the NHL's second-best record with 49 wins and 108 points, but the Dallas Stars knocked them out of the second round in six games on May 4. San Jose has ended its past three seasons with six-game losses in the second round, and general manager Doug Wilson decided his coach would take the fall for his talented playoff underachievers.
