Late Wednesday afternoon, rumblings began that Brent Stark's group from Whitecourt, Alberta had reneged on their offer to buy the Merritt Cents. They had been expected to come to town for meetings with the interim local ownership group a couple weeks ago, but never showed up. Then just this past Saturday, they met with BCHL officials and confimed their offer and commitment to buying the team. A few days later, they contacted the League and said they were pulling their offer. At this point, Joey Bouchard, the Whitecourt Wolverines’ former coach, has said he will stay & coach the Cents. The bottom line seems to be that the local team owners/society are in for a longer stint than they’d expected— at least another year to find a prospective buyer. “It's now up to the community of Merritt, both residents and business people, to show their support for the team by way of ticket sales and corporate sponsorships. I guess that hasn't changed either with these developments because a private ownership would expect the same.” writes Brian Wiebe, on his blog merrittcentennials.blogspot.com In other news: The Merritt Centennials Billet Family Program is looking for families to welcome players into their homes. Contact Betty, 378-6940.

Sixty Second Sermon

Pastors have their share of sorrow. But with Jesus in their lives, and seeing God’s grace in others, pastors are also always rejocing. Want to make a pastor smile? Love & obey God. Love & serve one another. There is no greater joy than to see the prosperity of the soul in others. When I was baptized 39 years ago, my pastor was overjoyed, and reminded me to be special for the Lord — something we both still strive for to this day. The gospel (aka ‘good news’) of Jesus is light, self-evident & proves its divine origin. Many people know about Jesus but are prejudiced, and will not listen (or read) if it means they might have to change. They fear that Jesus’ light might conflict with their good opinion of themselves & instead of love, they react with anger. The good news is that by trying to be humble & honest, we can all love God. The story of Gaius shows us that faith works by love. Gaius was conscientious, faithful, trustworthy, reliable & served others. He gave up his time, talent & resources for the glory of God. And when he was praised for doing so, he was humble & gave that back to God as well. When Jesus was on trial, he said that he came as God, to be a witness that God made the world, but also to be a witness against sin, which was ruining the world. Jesus said that I am the way, the only way to Heaven. He said that I am the truth. His wword is truth & those who trust Him will find truth, and be set free by Him. —Pastor John Rankin, Merritt Baptist Church, 378-2464, [email protected]

RECEPTION WITH THE ARTISTS July 10, 7pm Open Thurs. 6-8pm•Fri. & Sat. 10am-4pm

At approx. 10:30pm Tuesday evening, Merritt RCMP, along with the Merritt Fire Dept & BC Forestry, extinguished 2 grass fires on Midday Valley Rd, near the Merritt Mountain Music Festival grounds. The fires are deemed suspicious in nature. If not for the actions of the emergency personnel at the scene, both fires could have spread quickly due to the extremely dry forest conditions. The Merritt RCMP request any info the public may have with regard to the fires, as they appear to have been intentionally set. Phone 378-4262.
