Round Lake, between Merritt and Princeton, was the latest in a series of forest fires that have caught people offguard throughout the province. There were also fires last week on Mammette Lk Rd., and Hwy 8 near Nooaitch. So far this season, the Kamloops Fire Ctre has fought 73 fires, 70 of them personcaused, with 534 hectares burned — considerably higher than the same time last year. April was drier than normal, and snowpacks are already almost gone in our area. The fire danger rating is currently moderate in most of the Fire Centre, with areas of high fire danger in Merritt, Lillooet, Lytton, Kamloops and Clearwater. Report a fire by calling 1800-663-5555 or dial *5555 on your cell.
Accountability announced last week that there were no valid complaints filed in 2008 against the Merritt RCMP. “This city’s police force is outstanding in service, thus far,” said PAPA president Claude St Jean. “Our policing dept. is probably one out of the 735 or so Canadian detatchments to boast such a success. Thank you for the good service.“

A big thanks to the Rotary Club of Merritt for paying for the table and sign, and for their continued support of youth in the community — and specifically the bike park. Appreciation also goes out to Home Building for supplying the crane truck and to Alpha Design who, on short notice, provided a professional to weld the sign in place. The attendance record at any job is a measure of performance, and I would like the reader to consider Harry Lali's performance in this regard. The BC legislature does not really take attendance like in school. But they do record how an MLA votes based on standing votes. Kind of like whether you write the occasional quiz or not at school. If you don't show up to write quizzes, you fail. Harry Lali has failed us as an MLA based on his attendance to vote in the BC Legislature. In the session starting February 12, 2008 and ending February 12th, 2009, Harry Lali was present for only 26 of 53 standing votes, less than 50%. However when you consider that 12 of these votes were on one day on May 29, 2008, Harry Lali was in attendance for only 14 of 41 votes — less than 33% of the time. As the former mayor of Lytton, I know that Harry Lali was not in our communities from my own experience and talking to other mayors. So the question that needs to be asked of Harry Lali is: “Harry, where have you been and how have you been working on our behalf?” If this was school or a 9-5 job a person would fail or be fired. I ask you to consider this fact as you step up to the ballot box on May 12th. Maybe it's time to give the job to someone else who will actually represent our communities. When I asked this question of Harry Lali at an all-candidates forum in Princeton on May 27, he did not provide a satisfactory answer. I would be happy to provide any of this information and more to anybody who requests it. Feel free to contact me at
[email protected]. Or you might consider doing the research YOURSELF from the legislature web page: http://www.leg.bc.ca/hansard/hansindx/38th4th/2008-votrecl.htm#mh47. Yours truly, Chris O'Connor
Things that you should know by now, part 2 Eat well, stay fit, die anyway. • No man has ever been shot while doing the dishes. Middle age is when broadness of the mind and narrowness of the waist change places. Opportunities always look bigger going than coming. • A balanced diet is a beer in each hand. Junk is something you've kept for years and throw away three weeks before you need it. Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again. By the time you can make ends meet, they move the ends. • Thou shalt not weigh more than thy fridge. Someone who thinks logically provides a nice contrast to the real world.
