Pangulong Cory Aquino at ang liping Bulakenyo HINDI man magkatulad ang paraan ng pagpanaw ng kanyang asawang si dating Senador Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, ang pagpanaw ni dating Pangulong Corazon “Cory” Cojuangco-Aquino sa edad na 76 noong Sabado, Agosto 1, mayroon itong magkatulad na epekto. Ang kanilang paglisan sa mundong ito patungo sa piling ng Diyos na may likha ay muling nagbukas hindi lamang sa mata at isipan ng bawat Pilipino, kungdi maging sa dahon ng kasaysayang lumipas. Matapos ang pagpaslang kay Ninoy noong Agosto 21, 1983, nagising ang diwa ng sambayanang Pilipino mula sa mahabang pagkakahimbing. Dumaloy sa mga lansangan ang nakidalamhati, hanggang sa damdamin sa pagkaulila sa kalayaan ay umapaw sa isang payapang rebolusyong Edsa I halos tatlong taon ang nakalipas, na nagsilang sa isang bagong republika sa pamumuno ng kanyang maybahay na si Cory. Sa pagpanaw ni Cory nitong Sabado, bumaha ang pakikiramay mula sa iba’t-ibang panig ng mundo. Bilang paggalang at pakikidalamhati kay Cory na itinuturing na simbulo ng demokrasya sa bansa, mga Pilipino’y nagsipagsuot ng dilaw na damit, nagtali ng dilaw na laso, ipinakita ang kamay na nakadakot ngunit ang hintuturo ay nakaturo sa itaas at nakatagilid ang hinlalaki. Ang mga imaheng ito na unang nasaksihan ng bansa noong 1983 hanggang sa paglaya sa diktaduryang Marcos noong 1986, ay nagpapahiwatig na muling napukaw ang damdamin ng bansa. Tanong ng ilan, kasunod ba nito ay isa na namang rebolusyon at pagbabago? Oo. Ngunit ito ay hindi rebolusyon katulad ng nasaksihan at naranasan natin noong 1986. Maulit man ang katulad narebolusyon noong 1986 ay tiyak na matatagalan pa. Subalit ang rebolusyon sa puso at diwa ng mga Pilipino, partikular na sa liping Bulakenyo ay nagsimula na. Ito ay sa pamamagitan ng pagbabalik-tanaw sa dahon ng nakalipas na kasaysayan kung saan ay matutunghayan at muling madaramang nagpapaalala ang kabayanihan ng ating mga ninunong Bulakenyo, na sa bawat panahon ay naging bahagi ng kasaysayan ng bansa. Noong Hunyo 3, 1571, buong giting na nakipaglaban ang mga mandirigmang taga-Hagonoy kasama ang mga kapampangan sa “Labanan sa Bangkusay” na nasundan pa ng mga pag-aalsa ng mga Bulakenyo sa panahon ng Kastila, Amerikano at mga Hapon. Dahil sa kanilang pagmamahal sa bayan, kabilang ang mga Bulakenyong sina Crisanto Evangelista ng Meycauayan at Jacinto Manahan ng Bulakan sa nagsulong upang maitayo ang kilusang makamasa sa bansa na nagsilang sa Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas. Hindi lingid ang aktibismong Bulakenyo kaya noong Setyembre 12, 1972 ay ibinulgar ni dating Senador Aquino sa kanyang privileged speech sa Senado na minamanmanan ng mga tauhan ni dating Pangulong Ferdinand E. Marcos ang Bulacan kasama ang Rizal, at pinag-aaralan para sa posibilidad na isailalim sa Batas Militar. Dahil walang gustong lumaban kay Marcos sa halalang pampangulo noong 1979, ang bayani ng ikalawang digmaang pandaigdig at dating Gob. Alejo Santos ang lumaban at kumampanya. Sa Edsa Peoples’ Power revolution noong Pebrero 1986, hindi rin makakalimuutan ang kontribusyon ng mga pangunahing personalidad na sina Juan Ponce Enrile at Cory na kapwa may lahing Bulakenyo. Ang ama ni Enrile ay nagmula sa bayan ng Baliuag, at ang lolo ni Cory ay nagmula sa bayan ng Malolos. Sa lahat ng ito, mapapansin natin na sa tuwina, ang Bulakenyo ay may bahagi sa mga pangunahing pangyayari sa ating kasaysayan bilang isang bansa. Ito ay nagpapatunay lamang na bawat isa sa atin ay may katungkulan para sa katuparan ng isang magandang bukas.

Dumarami ang nais maging pangulo HABANG nagtatagal ay dumarami ang nagnanais na kumandidato sa pagka-pangulo ng ating bansa sa nalalapit na halalan sa Mayo ng susunod na taon. Nangunguna sa talaan ang mga senador na sina Loren Legarda, Chiz Escudero, Mar Roxas, Manny Villar, Jinggoy Estrada (kung hindi puwede si dating Pangulong Joseph Estrada), Jamby Madrigal. Gayundin sina Vice-President Noli de Castro, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando, Pampanga Gov. Ed Panlilio at Bro. Eddie Villanueva ng JIL Movement. Sa dami ng nais na maging pangulo ay naguguluhan ang mga botante. Sino kaya sa mga naghahangad na maging pangulo ang tapat ang hangaring maglingkod sa mga mamamayan? Marami ang nagsasabing lahat sila ay nais na maglingkod ng buong katapatan kapag sila ay nahalal. Sa aking sariling karanasan, mula kay Pangulong Ferdinand E. Marcos, habang nagtatagal at pabago-bago ang pangulo, lalong maraming mamamayan ang naghihirap. Mabuti-buti pa noong pana-

hon ni Marcos, iisa lamang ang nangungurakot sa kaban ng bayan. Sta. Banana! Pamahal nang pamahal ang bilihin NABIGLA ako nang minsang mapasyal ako sa pamilihan. Nang tanungin ko kung magkano ang isang kilo ng baboy ay nabigla ako nang sabihin ng tindera na P180. Ang pinakamurang bigas ay NFA rice na P25 isang kilo samantalang ang commercial rice ay P30 pataas ang isang kilo. Ang bangus na dati-rati ay P80 lang isang kilo ay P130 na ngayon. Wala akong mabili ngayon na mura. Maging ang itlog ng manok na dati-rati ay P3.50 hanggang P4 ang isa ay P5 na ngayon. Ang isang kilong galunggong na medyo sariwa ay P130 kada kilo at kung medyo bilasa ay P100 kada kilo. Papaano mapagkakasya ng isang ordinaryong manggagawa ang kinikita nitong minimum wage kung sa pamasahe lamang niya papunta at pauwi sa pinapasukan ay P100 na. Isang paghahambing SILA ang unang dalawang babaing naging Punong Tagapagpaganap ng Pilipinas, at hindi mahirap na gumawa ng paghahambing—sa kanilang karakter, pagganap sa tungkulin, paninindigan, pagmamahal sa bayan at sa mga Pilipino (o pagmamahal sa sarili). Sa isang normal at tradisyonal (at moral) na sukatan, magkalayo sila—tulad ng agwat ng langit at lupa. Nasa langit ang puso ni Corazon, nasa lupa ang Gloria. Sa pagkamatay ni Pangulong Cory Aquino ang katotohanan— katotohanang baka loobin ng Diyos na ‘makapagmulat’ at lumikha ng pangkaluluwang pagbabago kay Aling Gloria—sa nalalabing ilang buwan pa ng kanyang panunungkulan. Narito ang ilang paghahambing na hindi mapasusubalian maging ng mga Goebbels at Rasputin ng Malakanyang: Habang halos buong sambayanang Pilipino—mayaman at mahirap, bata at matanda, babae at lalaki, ang nagdadalamhati (at

naghihinayang) sa pagyao ni Tita Cory, si Aling Gloria naman ay halos isumpa ng 80 porsiyento ng may 90 milyong Pilipino—sa patuloy na pagsisinungaling ni GMA, sa patuloy na pangangapittuko sa poder—sa tulong ng kanyang bayarang tonggressita na patuloy na nagsusulong ng Cha-Cha—sa pamamagitan ng Con-Ass. Cory Aquino, na magreeleksiyon (hindi pa napagtitibay ang Konstitusyong nagbabawal sa re-eleksiyon noon), pero hindi ambisyosa at lalong hindi sakim sa yaman at kapangyarihan si Cory. Sa kanya, sapat nang naibalik niya sa Pilipinas ang demokrasya (na akala niya’y matatag na sa pagpapatibay ng isang Konstitusyong nagtatakda sa termino ng panunungkulan ng mga halal na opisyal, at paglimita sa kapangyarihan ng Presidente na magdeklara ng martial law). Ang malaking pagkakaiba nina Tita Cory at Aling Gloria,

pinasikat nila ang bansang Pilipinas sa magkasalungat na kalagayan sa sukatang moral: hinangaan at ginaya ng maraming bansa ang unang EDSA Revolution, na pinangunahan ni Corazon Aquino, tumanggap ng paghanga at papuri’t parangal si Gng. Aquino mula sa iba’t-ibang bansa, kinilalang icon o Ina ng Demokrasya sa Asia. Sa kabilang dako, pinasikat naman ni Pangulong MacapagalArroyo ang Pilipinas, bilang 1) pinaka-corrupt na bansa sa Asia kundi man sa buong mundo, at 2) pinakamapanganib na bansa ang Pilipinas na panirahanan ng mga peryodista, aktibista at ng mga kalaban ng katiwalian at paglabag sa mga karapatang pantao. ‘Austere laurels’ “FILIPINOS must now take stock,” Time magazine said on President Cory Aquino’s death. “Whom will they march with now that their saint has gone to meet her God?” You wondered. Thousands meanwhile wept, thrust the “Laban” sign, tossed flowers and rained yellow confetti on Cory’s coffin. They did so in the streets, in queues and at the wakes. “Cory Aquino’s magic is back,” read the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s (PDI) headline. “In death, she revives People Power.” At the Manila Memorial Park burial, people wept when the Church recited, over Cory’s dust, the ancient prayer it says, whether one is statesman, in gilded coffin, or indigent squatter swaddled in buri-mat shroud. “May angels lead you to paradise. May the martyrs and the saints lead you to the holy city … .” Ayala Avenue in Makati, where Aquino marched to defy a dictator in 1983, and EDSA (Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue), where the People Power Revolu-

Emerging in our local horizon? IN some developed countries, the popularity of their leaders is closely monitored. They have devised a continuing tracking system that in a manner of speaking takes the pulse of the nation and show how they view their leaders. This, of course, only gives at best a sociological profile or political picture of the country at a given time. It indicates the mood and the sentiments, and the prevailing concerns of the people. It shows the current cultural landscape of a given place. To a certain extent, it offers a good service. It can tell us many things about the people and the place, and these things can be useful for whatever purpose we may have in mind. But it has to be said very clearly that it does not make the standards of what’s supposed to be good and evil, right and wrong. It can only mirror, it can only reflect the people’s state of mind or something, but it does not create, much less dictate, what is supposed to be moral or immoral. We have to say this because

there seems to be a runaway mentality that tries to equate polling results and statistical data with the legal or moral standards. In things sociological, economic and political, where opinions are given a lot of weight, survey results can be the deciding factor. Businessmen, for example, are keen in knowing how the market is thinking at the moment, so they could make the necessary adjustments to their plans and moves. Not so when we talk about legality and morality. A stricter and even metaphysical method has to be used to determine what’s supposed to be legal and moral. There are certain realities that do not depend on the shifting sands of opinion because they pertain more to the nature of man and things, and this nature is permanent albeit dynamic. Thus, in our country where we have population-control advocates citing all sorts of surveys to justify their immoral positions, this distinction and reminder is worth reiterating. It’s actually a cheap act truly unwor-

thy of the dignity the people behind these polls struggle to project. We need to alert the more vulnerable sectors of our society regarding the chicanery played on them and on all of us. Most of these surveys are blatantly biased, if not rigged to come out with tendentious results. But going back to the proper role of these tracking systems, in the US these days, they are witnessing through their monitoring devices some dramatic changes in their political and sociological demographics. In effect, they are saying that there’s a strong trend toward an even more liberal culture. Liberalism is becoming more mainstream. This is not so much a phenomenon that is emerging in the horizon as something that has already arrived in our midst. This piece of information should be very interesting especially to those who place great importance to faith and the things of God. Liberalism is freedom gone wild and has no other tendency but to precisely weaken  continued on page 8

Spiritual hyperlinks ONE day God went to check Heaven’s pearly gates. He heard them squeaking badly and wanted to see if St. Peter had already oiled them. God asked St. Michael to go and check them out. When Michael reached the gates he was not only surprised to see Peter — as usual — sleeping on the job, but also the gates left ajar. Every now and then they gave out a gentle harmonious squeak when a celestial stray breeze blew by. “Peter, wake up!” St. Michael said trying to control himself. “Didn’t God tell you to watch over the gates and oil them?” “Uh? [HO-HUM] Ah … ehhr …,” St. Peter tried his best to hide a wide yawn escaping from his mouth. “Yeshh …, yes Lor ..., I mean Michael. I’m sorry.” “Never mind, Peter! But why haven’t you done it yet?”

“ [YAAHWN!] I was up all night.” “All night? Doing what?” “Surfin’ the net …,” he rubbed both eyes trying to focus on the conversation. “The net? But didn’t I tell you that it only wastes a lot of your heavenly time?” “I know, but you should really check out this craze of social networks down there!” Peter said excitedly. “You mean social not-working?” Michael snuffed “Oh, come on, just give it a try,” Peter insisted. “Okay, okay, okay,” Michael said and took a seat. “Now what am I supposed to do?” “It’s so easy, all you have to do is click on the links,” Peter felt proud to be teaching the Archangel a thing or two. St. Michael took the mouse and started surfing. “Let’s see,

Drummond King, an American triathlete, learned the hard way that it’s best to start drinking a lot of fluids the day before his body is going to need them. “The major problem is dehydration and the fatigue that comes with it,” he says. “Now, I spend the day before walking around with water bottle in my hand.” The same suggestion is recommended when you have flu. Dehydration happens when you have flu so water is needed. In addition, water can provide needed nutrients when you’re too sick to eat. Dr. Jay Swedberg, an associate professor of family practice at the University of Wyoming College of Health Sciences, recommends that you dilute fruit juices and half with water. “A little sugar provides necessary glucose, but too much can cause diarrhea when you’re ill,” he says. “Also, dilute sugar-sweetened softdrinks. And allow them to go flat before drinking because the bubbles can create gas in the stomach and make you more nauseated.” Those with bladder infections should also drink lots of fresh water. This is probably the single most important tip, for two reasons: comfort and health. “Some women get a urinary tract infection and think, ‘Aha! It only burns when I go to the toilet,” says Dr. Elliot L. Cohen, assis-

tant professor of clinical urology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. “They then reason that they won’t have to go if they don’t drink, so they don’t – which is absolutely the worst thing they can do.” The reason: The longer any amount of urine stays in the bladder, the more bacteria there are in it – E. coli doubles its population about every 20 minutes, according to Dr. David Staskin, assistant professor of urology at Boston University School of Medicine. More bacteria mean more pain. “Absolutely, the best thing a woman can do to fight the burning is drink fluids to flush out the bacteria that are causing the inflammation,” Dr. Cohen explains. “There’s a very strong argument for drinking more fluid both to prevent UTIs and to treat them,” Dr. Staskin says. “Studies have been performed where bacteria were mechanically introduced into the bladders of volunteers. But voiding just twice effectively sterilized the bladder.” The message is clear: The more you drink, the sooner the pain will stop. And a hint: If your urine’s clear, you’re drinking enough of it. If it’s colored, you’re not. It may sound elementary, but experts agree that you should keep your feet scrupulously clean if you have foot odor. Use warm, soapy water and wash your feet as often as needed – several times a day if you perspire a lot or notice an odor. “Scrub gently with a soft brush, even between your toes, and be sure to dry your feet thoroughly,” says Dr. Diana Bihova, a dermatologist and author of Beauty from the Inside Out. ‘Corporatives’ IT’S not a new word, but I am fascinated by it. Simply put, a corporative is a cooperative that is run like a corporation. The basic difference between a cooperative and a corporation is the system of voting. In a cooperative, stockholders have one vote per member. In a corporation, stockholders have as many votes as their number of shares. This does not mean however that a cooperative could not be run as efficiently as a corporation. In a way, I am sort of rediscovering the cooperative movement, and regaining my faith in it. At one time, I was Vice Chairman of the DFA Multi Purpose Cooperative, and I had the pleasant experience of increasing our revenues by expanding our businesses. Other than that, I was discouraged by the way many cooperatives have failed because of mismanagement and infighting due to internal politics. Moving on to the present times, I have been very encouraged by the warm reaction of Ms. Elsa Bayani and Mr. Rene Abad to my suggestion that we should help in the computerization of barangay units by giving them reformatted and upgraded used computers that are solicited from personal and corporate donors

here and abroad. As I see it, the computerization of barangay enterprises is the next logical step to the computerization of the barangay units. Needless to say, these barangay enterprises will most likely be organized as cooperatives. When they are computerized, they would have a better chance of being managed like corporations, thus giving them a better chance of surviving and growing. It has been more than eight years since the Electronic Commerce Act (ECA) was passed. The expectation then was to have daughter laws and granddaughter laws thereafter, but so far nothing has been passed. Meanwhile, e-Commerce has not really taken off in the country. More so in the cooperative sector, very few if ever have entered the online trade. Just like in the case of cooperatives, I have recently revived my interest in e-Commerce, inspired perhaps by my new friendships with Mr. Jay Aguilar and Mr. Thomas Lee. ‘We give her back to You, with grateful but breaking hearts’ BY CATALINO AREVALO, SJ

Following is the Homily delivered by Fr. Catalino Arevalo, S.J. at the Funeral Mass for President Cory Aquino at the Manila Cathedral Aug. 5, 2009. — Editor IF I may, I will first ask pardon for what might be an unseemly introduction. In the last days of President Cory’s illness, when it seemed inevitable that the end would come, the assignment to give this homily was given to me by Kris Aquino. She reminded me that many times and publicly, her mother had said she was asking me to preach at her funeral Mass. Always I told her I was years older, and would go ahead of her, but she would just smile at this. Those who knew Tita Cory knew that when she had made up her mind, she had made up her mind. What then is my task this morning? I know for certain that if liturgical rules were not what they are, she would have asked Congressman Ted Locsin to be here in my place. No one has it in him to speak as fittingly of Cory Aquino in the manner and measure of tribute she uniquely deserves, no one else as he. Asked in an interview, she said that the address before the two Houses of Congress at Washington she considered perhaps the supreme shining moment of her life. We know who helped her with those words with which she conquered America. These last few days, too, every gifted writer in the press and other media has written on her person and political history, analyzed almost every side of her life and achievement as our own “icon of democracy”. More powerfully even, images of her and of Edsa Uno have filled hour after hour of TV time. Really, what else is left to be said? SO, Tita Cory, you’ll forgive me if I don’t even try to give a shadow of the great oration that should be given here this morning. Let me instead try to say some things the people who persevered for hours on end in the serried lines at Ortigas or here in Intramuros can (I hope) more easily follow. This is a lowly tribute at one with “the old sneakers and clothes made tighter by age, soaked by water and much worse for wear” of the men, women and children who braved the rain and the sun because they wanted to tell you, even for a brief and hurried moment, how much they love you. You truly “now belong among the immortals”. But these words are for those mortals who with bruised hearts have lost “the mother of a people”. Maybe less elegantly than the seminarian said to me Monday, they would like to say also: “She was the only true queen our people have ever had, and she was queen because we knew she truly held our hearts in the greatness and the gentleness of her own.” One of my teachers used to tell us that if we really wanted to know and understand a position held, we would have to learn it from someone fully committed to it. Just as only one who genuinely loves a person, really knows him or her also. So to begin with, I turned to three real “experts on Cory”; to ask them where for them the true greatness of Cory Aquino lay. My first source thought it was in her selflessness, seen above all in her love of country-surely above self; yes, even above family. Her selfgiving, then, for us; what she had received, all became gift for us. The second, thought it was in her faith her greatness lay, in her total trust in God which was also her greatest strength. And the third said it was in her courage and the unshakable loyalty that went with it. It was a strength others could lean on; it never wavered; it never broke….Cory’s selflessness and self-giving; her faith (the Holy Father just called it “unwavering”); her courage, her strength. May I use this short list to frame what I will say? O, let me name my experts now, if I may. They were three, all of them women close to her: Maria Elena Aquino Cruz, whom we know as Ballsy, Maria Aurora Aquino Abellada, Pinky to her friends; and Victoria Elisa Aquino Dee, Viel to the family. Kris and Noynoy are the public figures; they can speak for themselves. I hope they will forgive me that I did not ask. First, selflessness First, then, her generous selflessness. For us this morning what is surely most to the point is her love of country. When her final illness was upon her already, she saidmost recently at the Greenmeadows chapel (her last public words, I think)-that she was offering her suffering, first to God, then for our people. I heard that grandson Jiggy asked her why first for country and people, and she said that always the priority lineup was God, our country and our people, and then family. On radio, the other night,

the commentator asked an old woman in line why she stood hours in the rain to get into La Salle. “Ito lang ang maibibigay ko po sa kanya, bilang pasasalamat.” “Bakit, ano ba ang ibinigay ni Cory sa inyo?” “Di po ba ang buhay nya? Ang buong sarili nya? At di po ba ang pag-asa? Kaya mahal na mahal po namin siya.” Early on, on TV, they ran many times the clip from a last interview. She says, “I thank God, and then all of you, for making me a Filipino, for making me one of you. I cherish this as one of the truly great gifts I have received.” A few weeks from her death, she could say that; without put-on or the least insincerity. “I thank you, for making me one of you.” Her selflessness, her self-gift. Pope Benedict likes to say that the God whom Jesus Christ revealed to us, is Father. A Father who is wholly self-gift; the God “whose nature is to give Himself”-to give Himself to us, in His Son. And, the Pope says, that is what is the meaning of Jesus and the life of Jesus, and, by discipleship, what the Christian’s life is meant to be. We Christians, too, we must give ourselves away in the self-giving of love. “Ang buhay po nya at sarili. Kaya po mahal na mahal namin sya.” In the last days, when finally and reluctantly still she admitted she had much pain, I kept thinking that only a couple of weeks before, for the first time publicly, she said that she was offering it up first of all for us. Second, her faith Second, her faith. Pinky says, it was her mother’s greatest strength; it was what was deepest in her. Her faith was her bedrock, and it was, bedrock. Frederick Buechner the ordained minister and novelist likes to say that through his lifetime, he’s had many doubts, even deep doubt, daily doubts. “But I have never really looked down into the deep abyss and seen only nothing. Somehow I have known, that underneath all the shadows and the darkness, there are the everlasting arms.” I think Cory’s faith was like that, not in the multiplicity of doubts (even if, in a life so filled with trial, there surely were doubts too), but in the certainty of the everlasting arms. More than once she told me, “Every time life painted me into a corner, with seemingly no escape, I always turned to Him in trust. I knew He would never abandon us if we trusted in Him. And you know, somehow, He found a way out for us.” And so Pinky says, “Mom was always calm even in the most trying times. She trusted God would always be there for us, She was our source of strength. She made this world seem so much safer and less cruel for us. And now that our source of strength is gone, we have to make our faith something more like hers. But we know in our hearts that in every storm she will watch over us from heaven.” Devotion to Mary Within this faith was her devotion to Mary, the place Our Lady of Fatima and the rosary held in her life. All we can say on this, this morning is that Our Lady truly had a special, living presence in her life: Mary was, for Cory, true mother and incomparable friend; as we say in the hymn-vita, dulcedo et spes: life, sweetness and hope. No, Mary was not the center of her faith, but its air, its atmosphere; and the rosary, her lifeline through every trial and crisis. In the long harsh months of her illness, Sister Lucia’s beads almost never left her hands. She was holding them, as last Saturday was dawning and her years of exile were at last done, when we know her Lady “showed unto her, the blessed fruit of her womb.” Third, courage Lastly, her courage, her strength. Her children tell us that their father was only able to do what he wanted to do, because her loyalty and her support for his purposes was total, so she practically raised them up as a single parent. Ninoy himself wrote, again and again, that he endured imprisonment and persecution, leaning so much on her courage and love. And after his death, when she could have withdrawn in a way “safely” to her own life with her children at last, she stayed on her feet and fought on in the years that followed, through the snap elections and what went before and after them, through her presidency and the seven coup attempts which tried to bring her down. Even after she had given up her rule, could she not have said

But with not the least desire for position or power again, whenever she thought the spaces of freedom and the true good of our land were threatened, she went back to the streets of struggle again. Once again she led us out of the apathy we so readily fall into; once again she called us out of our comfort zones to the roads of sacrifice. Purity of heart Here, even hesitantly, may I add one trait, one virtue, to those her daughters have named? One day Cardinal Stephen Kim of South Korea asked if he might visit her. Through Ballsy, she said yes. It was a day Malaca?ang was “closed”; they were making up the roster of members of the forthcoming Constitutional Convention. Someone from the palace staff ordered us turned away when we came; it was Ballsy who rescued us. Stephen Kim, hero and saint to his own people-perhaps, along with Cardinal Sin, one the two greatest Asian Catholic prelates of our time-spent some 45 minutes talking with her. When we were on our way back, he said, “I know why the Lord has entrusted her with power, at this most difficult time…It is because she is pure of heart. She has no desire for power; even now it is with reluctance she takes it on. And she has done this only because she wants to do whatever she can for your people.” He said, “She truly moves me by the purity of her spirit. God has given a great gift to your people.” With this purity of heart, in the scheme of the Christian Gospel, there is joined another reality which really, only the saints understand. It is suffering. How often (it is really often; over and over through the years) she spoke of suffering as part of her life. Much contemporary spirituality speaks of suffering almost as the epitome of all evil. But in fact for all the saints, it is a mystery they themselves do not really understand nor really explain, Yet they accept it quietly, simply as part of their lives in Christ. There is only one painting she ever gave me. Kris said then, when her mom gave it to me, that it was her mom’s favorite. The painting carries 1998 as its date; Cory named it “Crosses and roses.” There are seven crosses for the seven months and seven weeks of her beloved Ninoy’s imprisonment, and for the seven attempted coups during her presidency, and many roses, multicolored roses all around them. At the back of the painting, in her own hand, she wrote a haiku of her own: “Crosses and roses/ make my life more meaningful./ I cannot complain.” Often she spoke of her “quota of suffering.” When she spoke of her last illness, she said: “I thought I had filled up my quota of suffering, but it seems there is no quota. I look at Jesus, who was wholly sinless: how much suffering he had to bear for our sake.” And in her last public talk (it was at Greenmeadows chapel), the first time she spoke of her own pain: “I have not asked for it, but if it is meant to be part of my life still, so be it. I will not complain.” “I try to join it with Jesus’s pain and offering. For what it’s worth, I am offering it up for our people.” Friends here present, I tell you honestly I hesitated before going into this, this morning. But without it, part of the real Cory Aquino would be kept from view. Quite simply, this was integral to the love she bore for her people. Thanks to her children AT this point, may I, following the lead Mr. Rapa Lopa has given, just speak a word of thanks to President Cory’s children, who shared so much of her service and her sacrifice. They have almost never had their father and mother for themselves. For so many years, they have been asked to share Ninoy and Cory with all of us. And because of the blood and the spirit their parents have passed on to them, they too gave with generosity and grace the sacrifices we demanded of them. Ballsy and Pinky, Viel and Kris, your husbands and your children, and Senator Noynoy, may we thank you this morning from all our hearts, and may we offer also the gratitude of the hearts of a

people now forever in your debt. I have used up all my time, some of you will say, and I have not even approached the essential: her political life, that she was our nation’s unique icon of democracy, that Cory Aquino who is know throughout the world; was TIME magazine’s 1986’s woman of the year; she who led the ending of the dictatorship that had ruined our nation, the bearer of liberation, of freedom, and of hope for a prostrate people. So, by your leave, may I add one item, along this line at last. In October 1995, Milano’s Catholic University, conferred on her the doctorate honoris causa in the political sciences (incidentally, only her twenty-third honorary degree). This was only the fifth time this particular one had been given since the university’s inception: the first time to an Asian, the first ever to a woman. She wanted, at the end of her lectio magistralis, to spell out, perhaps for the first time with some explicitness and completeness, her personal political creed. She listed seven basic beliefs which, regarding political life , she said she tried to live by. Then she spoke of one more, “one more I may not omit.” Perhaps the paragraph which followed is worth citing here, even without comment, because it has something to say to our present hour. (We cite her words now.) “I believe that the vocation of politics must be accepted by those who take up the service of leadership as a vocation in its noblest meaning: it demands all of life. For the life of one who would lead his or her people-in our time as never before-such a life must strive for coherence with the vision aspired to, or else that vision itself and its realization are already betrayed. That vision must itself be present, in some authentic way, in those who seek to realize it: present, in the witness of their example; present, in a purity of heart vis-?-vis the exercise and usages of power; present, in an ultimate fidelity to principle, in a dedication that is ready to count the cost in terms of ‘nothing less than everything.’ It is Cardinal Newman, I believe, who said that in this world, we do good only in the measure that we pay for it in the currency of our own lives. For us Christians, there is always the image of Jesus, and the price his service demanded of him. And for me there has been, as a constant reminder, the sacrifice my husband offered, and the word that it has spoken, to me and my people.” (Cory Aquino, end of citation) Conclusion With all this said, I am done. Ma’am, tapos na po ang assignment ko. It has been so hard to do what you asked. But I comfort myself that these so many words really do not matter. What counts in the end is really-what all this week has been; these past few days’ outpouring of our people’s gratitude and love; what will come after all this today; what we will do, in the times ahead, in fidelity to your gift. I received a text last night from a man of some age and with some history behind him. “She made me proud again, to be Filipino.” Maybe that says it all. Cardinal Sin used to put it somewhat differently. “What a gift God has given our people, in giving Cory Aquino to us.” The nobility and courage of your spirit, the generosity of your heart, the grace and graciousness that accompanied you always. They called it “Cory magic”-but it was the truth, and the purity and beauty, clear and radiant within you, that we saw. And the hope that arose from that. And when the crosses came to you and you did not refuse to bear them, more to be one with your Christ and one with your people and their pain. “Blessed are the pure of heart; for they shall see God.” Thank You Father in heaven, for your gift to us of Cory Aquino. Thank You that she passed once this way through our lives with the grace You gave her to share with us. If we give her back to you, we do it with hearts of thanksgiving, but now, oh, with breaking hearts also, because of the greatness and beauty of the gift which she was for us, the likes of which, perhaps, we shall not know again. Salamat po, Tita Cory, mahal na mahal po namin kayo.

“They came to me with one cry — DEMOCRACY.” — Cory Aquino LAGI kong sinasabi na nagsisisi ako na hindi pa ako naipanganak upang makimartsa para sa libing ni Ninoy Aquino noong 31 Agosto 1983 kung saan dalawang milyong tao ang nakipaglibing (mas malaki pa kaysa kay Mahatma Gandhi). Nagsisisi rin ako na masyado pa akong bata para sumama sa Kapangyarihang Bayan sa EDSA noong Pebrero 1986 kung saan dalawang milyon din ang masayang nakibaka para sa demokrasya sa kabila ng panganib. Naging panalangin ko na sana malasap ko man lang kahit kaunti ang karanasang “People Power.”

Hindi ko inaasahan na matutupad ito noong 5 Agosto 2009, sa paghahatid sa huling hantungan sa dating pangulong Maria Corazon Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino. Nagsimula ang araw ko bilang isang panauhin sa Umagang Kay Ganda sa ABS-CBN 2. Kinapanayam ako ni Winnie Cordero ukol sa aking pangongolekta ng Cory at Ninoy memorabilia sa kabila nang hindi pa ako naipapanganak nang mapaslang si Ninoy. Doon ko ipinakita na bata pa lamang ako, inspirasyon na sa akin si Tita Cory. Na simula nang mamatay si Tita Cory ay disoriented ako at kulang sa tulog kaya kailangan kong pumila ng tatlong oras sa La Salle Greenhills (kasama sina Tita Honey at Ivana Guevara) upang masulyapan siya kahit sandali noong madaling araw ng 3 Agosto. Bumata siya ng tatlumpung taon at napakapayapa ng kanyang mukha. Naikuwento ko rin ang aking pakikiramay sa dalawa niyang anak, si Noynoy at Pinky at ang pagkabuhay ng aking diwa nang makita ko ang libo-libong tao sa telebisyon ilang oras ang nakalipas sa paglilipat sa kanyang mga labi patungong Katedral ng Maynila. Na liban sa pagpapanatili ng demokrasya, ang kanyang pangunahing kontribusyon sa atin ay ang pagbabalik ng tiwala ng Pilipino sa kanyang sarili. Sa mga nakaraang taon akala ko, nakalimutan na siya. Kakaunti na lamang ang dumidinig sa kanya sa tuwing nagpapatawag siya ng suporta laban sa mga pagbabanta sa demokrasya bagama’t nananatili siyang tinitingala. Sa isa sa kanyang mga huling text message, nadama niyang sa kanyang karamdaman, nag-iisa lamang siya sa pananalangin para sa bayan. Hindi ko inaasahan ang mga sumunod kong makikita. Sa paghatid sa akin sa Katedral, nakita kong may iilan nang tao ang naroroon. Kasama ko sa bandang COMELEC sina Ayshia Kunting at Kerby Alvarez, mga kasama sa U.P. Lipunang Pangkasaysayan. Ang huli ay may tiket sana sa loob ng Katedral ngunit siya ay nahuli kaya hindi na nakapasok. Halos maluha na siya dahil doon. Nakita namin ang galaw ng bayan. May mga nabigyan ng trabaho dahil sa pagkamatay ni Tita Cory, nagbebenta ng samu’t saring mga pins (P 20), mga t-shirt (P100), mga dilaw na laso (P20) at mga payong (P120). Ang mga VIP na dumadaan ay maayos na pinapapasok, tumabi nang magmartsa ang militar. Bagama’t tumili nang makita si Piolo Pascual at iba pang mga artista, sa mga bulong-bulungan, hindi si Kris Aquino o James Yap ang kanilang ipinunta doon kundi ang magpasalamat kay Tita Cory. Alam ng bayan kung bakit sila nandoon. Nagsimula ang misa ganap ika-9 ng umaga, hindi namin naririnig sa labas ang mga nangyayari sa loob. Nang mamatay si Tita Cory, makulimlim ang langit. Nang saluduhan ang labi niya sa La Salle Greenhills ng militar biglang umulan, at tumigil matapos ang pagsaludo. Nang pumuwesto kami malapit sa Ayuntamiento, umulan muli nang malakas. Nabasa ang ilang libro ko sa loob ng aking bag pero ayos lang. Nakita kong hindi natinag ang bayan. Kahit may mga payong, kami ay nabasa, pero okay lang. Bahagi kami ng kasaysayan, at para ito kay Tita Cory. Noong 1983, sa paghahatid kay Ninoy, ang ulan at baha ay hindi pumigil sa mga tao. Sa wakas, narinig namin ang pasasalamat at pamamaalam ni Kris Aquino, napaluha kami. Wika niya sa mamamayang Pilipino, hiniram ang mga kataga ng kanyang bayaning ama, “You have given our family honor beyond anything we could ever have hoped to receive, that no matter how great the sacrifices of my parents, I can honestly say to all of you that for my family, the Filipinos are worth it… Paano po ba kami makakapagpasalamat sa inyong lahat sa effort ninyong pumila sa gitna ng matinding init at malakas na pagbuhos ng ulan para po masulyapan ang mommy namin, magbigay respeto at maipagdasal siya sa huling pagkakataon?” Ngunit pinalakpakan ng lahat ang kanyang deklarasyon na ipagpatuloy ang laban ng kanilang ama’t ina, “Noy, ikaw at ako ang nasa posisyon para ipagpatuloy ang lahat ng kanilang nasimulan.” Bumuhos lalo ang emosyon sa pagsabay namin kay Lea Salonga sa pag-awit ng “Bayan Ko.” Sa mga oras na iyon, nakita naman namin na gumagawa ng pelikula ang Kapampangan na si Brillante Mendoza, unang Pilipinong nagwagi bilang pinakamahusay na direktor sa Cannes Film Festival ngayong taon, ukol sa isang batang mahirap sa gitna ng pagluluksa ng bayan ay hindi pinapansin ng mga tao. Nang makausap ko si Margie Juico, dating sekretarya ni Tita Cory, masyadong malayo ang Manila Memorial kung martsa ang gagawin. Nakita ko na sa pagtatapos ng misa, kinordonan na ng pulis ang mga tao. Sa paglabas ni Tita Cory ng Katedral mga bandang ika-11:45 ng umaga, tumigil ang tubig-ulan. Napalitan nang pag-ulan ng confetti mula sa helikopter, at sa taas ng Katedral at Palacio del Gobernador. Nagsigawan ng “Coree! Coree!” at ginawa ng bayan ang Laban sign sa kamay sa pagdaan ni Tita Cory sa kanilang harapan. Nagsimula na ang kalbaryo at kagitingan ng apat na honor guard—Navy Petty Officer 2 Edgardo Rodriguez, Army Pfc. Antonio Cadiente, Airman 2nd Class Gener Laguindan, at Police Officer 1 Danilo Malab, Jr., na inasahan na dalawang oras lamang tatayo at hindi gagalaw. Sa kanilang pagtayo ng siyam na oras, nagbigay sila ng malaking karangalan, hindi lamang sa kanilang dating commander-in-chief, kundi sa kanilang uniporme na rin. Nang makadaan ang coaster ng pamilya Aquino, nakakapangilabot ang aking nakita. Hindi na napigilan ng mga awtoridad ang pagsunod ng mga tao sa prusisyon. Nais samahan ng bayan si Tita Cory at ang kanyang pamilya sa huling sandali. Sumama na rin kaming tatlo sa paglakad. Ang aming mga kasama, isinisigaw ang pangalan ni Tita Cory. Sumasagot ang mga taong nakatayo sa tabi ng kalsada. Mga matatanda, maging ang mga bata. May mga gawa sa bahay na mga plakard na nagpapasalamat sa dating pangulo. Nang makarating ako sa Anda Circle at sa A. Bonifacio Drive, sa paglingon ko sa likod, ang daming taong nakasunod, isang dagat ng dilaw. Dilaw ang kulay ni Tita Cory, ang bagong pula, ang bagong kulay ng kagitingan at kalayaan. Naluha ako. Lagi kong sinasabing ang nakararaming Pilipino ay wala nang pakialam sa bansa, na nakalimutan na nilang magtiwala sa kanilang sarili. Ngunit sa sandaling iyon, nakita ko na ang dami pa palang nagmamahal sa bansa natin. Hindi pa pala namatay ang diwa ng Kapangyarihang Bayan sa atin, natutulog lang pala ito. Nakita kong natuwa si Kerby na kasama niya ang bayan sa mga oras na iyon. Hindi hamak na mas matindi ang pagpupugay sa labas ng Katedral kaysa ng mga elit na nasa loob. Nakita ko ang aming punong-lungsod sa Tarlac, Alkalde Aro Mendoza, na pinangunahan ang batalyon ng mga bus ng mga cabalen namin ni Tita Cory. Kasama naming lumalakad ang mga inspirasyon ng bayan sa ngayon, si Gobernador Among Ed Panlilio ng Pampanga, at si Jun Lozada, na nagbigay ng maikling panahon upang makipagkwentuhan sa akin. Napaka-cute ng mga bata na sumisigaw ng “Coree!” Isinigaw ko bilang palaala sa kanila, “1983 ulit!” habang hawak-hawak ang dala-dala kong Mr. and Ms. Special Edition, “Ulitin natin ang kasaysayan!” Noong 1983, sa kabila ng pagkukubli ng medyang pambalana na makaMarcos noon sa pagbabalitang may isang namatay dahil tinamaan ng kidlat, ang Mr. and Ms. Special Edition, at ang pahayagang Mabuhay ang nagpakita ng mga larawan na milyon-milyong tao ang nakipaglibing kay Ninoy. Mayroon lang isang presidentiable na kinamayan ang mga tao habang nasa loob ng kanyang kotse, tahasang inaagaw ang atensyon na para lang sana kay Tita Cory. Mayroong sumigaw, “Bawal mangampanya dito !” “Lumakad ka!” Hindi natinag ang mga tao sa kabila ng lakas ng alon sa Look ng Maynila. Liban sa mga bayaning bumberong nakalinya upang magpugay sa isang Dakilang Pilipina,

naroroon ang mga magkakapamilya, magkakaibigan, magkakaklase na nakalinya sa daan. Sa bawat pagsigaw ko sa kanila ng “Tuloy ang Laban!” habang itinataas ang Laban sign, sumasagot sila, at nakikita ko ang kanilang mga mata, puno ng pagmamahal sa bayan. Naramdaman ko ang pagtanggap nila sa akin bilang kababayan. Mga kapatid ko sila. Nalasap ko rin sa wakas ang diwa ng EDSA, na nasasalamin sa mga kataga ng awitin ni Jim Paredes, “Kay sarap palang maging Pilipino,” “Naging langit itong bahagi ng mundo!” Hindi matatapatan ng mga karaniwang rally ang aking naranasan. Sa mga pagkilos man ng kaliwa o kanan, kadalasa’y galit at hinaing ang kanilang ipinapakita. Noong 1983, pinagsamang galit sa diktadura at pagmamahal sa bayan ang nakita. Sa mga sandaling iyon sa libing ni Tita Cory, pagmamahal sa bayan at pasasalamat kay Tita Cory ang nasa mga mata ng mga tao. Hindi sapat ang makita ito sa telebisyon. Nakita at nadama ko ang katotohanan ng mga damdaming ito nang samahan ko ang bayan noong araw na iyon. Lumakad pa kami hanggang sa Quirino-Taft. Bagama’t ang itaas na kalahati ng aking katawan ay nalulunod sa pagmamahal ng bayan at gusto pang sumama, dinama ko ang aking mga tuhod at pagod na ang mga ito. Nagpasya kaming kumalas sa prusisyon bandang ika-2 ng hapon. Pero pauwi sakay sa bus, nagpakita kami ng Laban sign, tinitingnan namin kung may sasagot sa amin tulad kanina, isa man lang masaya na kami. Liban sa isa na nagbigay sa amin ng gitnang daliri, sampu ang sumagot sa amin ng Laban! Ito ang aming simbolikong paraan upang ipaalala sa aming sarili na baon namin pauwi ang laban nina Ninoy at Cory. Samantala, sa telebisyon na namin nasundan ang pagpapatuloy ng paghahatid kay Tita Cory sa huling hantungan, hanggang matapos ang 22.8 kilometro mula Katedral ng Maynila, dumating ang mga labi ng dating pangulo sa Manila Memorial Park. Nais ng pamilya Aquino na maging pribado ang paglilibing. Ngunit nais ng taumbayan na ihatid ang kanilang Tita Cory hanggang sa huli. Mas malayo ang distansya ng prusisyon ng dalawang milyong katao para kay Ninoy noong 1983 mula sa Simbahan ng Sto. Domingo sa Lungsod Quezon, 12 oras ang inabot. Sa halos kalahati ng distansya mula Katedral ng Maynila (kung saan mga matataas na kaparian lamang ang ibinuburol), ang prusisyon ng 300,000 tao ay umabot na nang 9 na oras. Higit pa ito sa karangalan ng isang state funeral (na gagastusan sana ng pamahalaan). Ayon kay Manolo Quezon, ang desisyon ng pamilya ay konsistent sa buhay ni Tita Cory na hindi ninais ang kahit anong karangyaan at karangalan na inasam-asam ng iba, “But as Cory Aquino lived, so she remains in death: having accepted only the barest minimum in terms of the honors of state, because she only held the position to accomplish the transition back to democracy, and doing so with a scrupulous regard not to burden the public purse with fuss over her person. / For Cory, the presidency had always been a means to an end, not a means in itself; so it is truly fitting she will be laid to rest with nothing more than what she’d started out with, as a widow: a nation by her side, united in grief, and in a manner that ultimately manifests the power of the people and not of whoever happens to comprise today’s officialdom.” Sa ganap na ika-8:35 ng gabi, humimlay sa pagmamahal ng kanyang pamilya at mga kababayan ang unang inang pangulo ng Pilipinas, muling nakatabi ang kaisaisang lalaking kanyang minahal, si Ninoy. Nang hapon na iyon, ako ay dinala sa ABS-CBN upang kapanayamin para sa programang Y-Speak. Doon aking sinabi, “She may not be the best president, but she did her best as president.” Si Tita Cory mismo ang nagsabi sa kanyang huling State of the Nation Address noong 1991, “I hope that history will judge me as favorably as our people still regard me, because, as God is my witness, I honestly did the best I could. (Cory Aquino’s death have seen a flood of letters flow in. The writers range from hard nosed journalists, priests to book editor. They give intimate insights into this “simple housewife” who toppled a dictatorship and those turbulent yet exhilarating years – JLM ). ARNOLD Zeitlin served as Associated Press bureau chief in Manila until expelled by the Marcos regime. He now visiting journalism professor at Guandong University. He wrote: “After hearing of Ninoy’s murder, I went to Cory’s Chestnut Hill house. I took my two daughters because I didn’t think I could handle visit alone. When i entered the house, Cory was coming down the stairs. “Oh, Arnold,” she said, “I never thought it’d come to this.” The house was mad. reporters, TV cameras, including a Japanese crew. Cory beckoned me to sit beside her as reporters threw questions. One woman from Time asked a quesiton that touched a Cory nerve. I don’t even remember what the question was now. “You don’t know Ninoy!” she shouted. I patted her arm. She calmed… On her return from Ninoy’s burial, she appeared at a Cambridge Memorial arranged by Ben Brown of Harvard. Again, she asked me to sit by her. She was much more in control. A reporter addressed her mistakenly as “Mrs Marcos.....” There was an embarrassed pause. Cory broke it by saying sternly, “I don’t think Imelda would have liked that, too.” It was then that I wondered : Should I do an AP piece about Cory running against Marcos. In January of her final year in office, I called on her in Malacanang. “167 days left, Arnold.” She was counting the days when she could leave office. “She once told me: Her goal as president was to make sure that no other woman would ever have to go through what she went through when Ninoy was jailed after Marcos imposed martial law. That goal she achieved. May she rest in peace.” From Ireland, Redemptotist priest Patrick Martin emailed: “The memory I cherish is from the time of the snap election and the coming of Marcos to Cebu - the one who claimed 90% of the vote and love of the people. Cebu was like an armed camp — “to protect him from love of the people?” “Cory came a week later. No army. No armalites. Just welcoming, hopeful, freely milling people at the Fuente Osmena. “On the morning Marcos left, news filtered out that this was so. I went down Jones Avenue and the was a slight air of uncertain hope. A few hours later, that changed to gloom as Marcos appeared on the Palace balcony - still here - still President! “Later that evening he was gone. At the Fuente, there was exhilaration, hope, and joy was unforgettable. Cory brought this joy and sense of pride to the people - a truly wonderful gift. “Who will bring it now? Ar dheis De go raibh a anam. “May her soul be a God’s right hand.” From Washington, former Wall Street Journal reporter Eddie Lachica wrote: “I felt Cory’s passing as a personal loss. You probably felt the same way. “Some of us did bring to the table the best our powers and circumstances allowed us. And Cory, in my view, did better than most. What makes me sadder is the little promise there is in the succeeding generation’s ability to improve on or at least preserve what has been accomplished so far. “I’m the least qualified to say this because I was not around to help Cory during her beleaguered presidency or even to pay my respects when she lay dying of cancer. Reporting the Aquinos in their Boston exile and Cory’s People’s Power triumph was the most satisfying thing I ever did in my life. “I made a selfish career choice of leaving the post-Marcos Philippine story for a more professionally rewarding Washington beat. I have not been able do anything for the Philippines since, and looking back I see what I have missed. I truly regret it. ‘I hope you continue to remind readers of the values of the good people of our generation so that those who served well. . PS—The Washington Post devoted nearly half a page to Cory’s death, a lengthy tribute by Bill Brannigin, a fellow-People’s Power scribe. But not a single line for Gloria’s tete-a-tete with Obama.” Book Editor Carol Go wrote from Quezon City: “Twentythree years ago, in response to a nighttime radio call by Jaime Cardinal Sin, I rushed to EDSA. With me were my co-lectors in our parish church then to participate in what is now known as People Power. “Many of us were still in our pajamas! Little did we know then that we’d be making history. That event would also signal the toppling down of other dictatorial regimes around the world. “I just want to say thank you. First, to God for keeping my family safe during those times; next, to Cory for being like Ninoy—undaunted in believing that the Filipino is worth dying for. “ My 20-year-old son will be playing the violin, with the UST Symphony Orchestra, during Cory’s wake at the Manila Cathedral. I hope he realizes that the woman in the casket, together with millions of other ordinary citizens of the country, once bought for him the freedom he now enjoys. God bless the Philippines and the next generation of Filipinos. May He raise up for us a new leader like Cory Aquino.” From Hong Kong, former CNN staffer Hope Ngo wrote: “When they took the remains of Cory to Manila cathedral, I felt tears welling up. I remembered, being university student— galvanized by that same lady in yellow, asking us : fight the dictatorship that gripped the country in terror. “I remembered marching down Ayala avenue to chants of ‘Cory, Cory, Cory!’ and ‘walang babaril’ at the intersection where students had been gunned down. I remembered the covering creation of the constitution — : the same one which the current government is trying to mangle today. Today, the promise of a new dawn had vanished. In its place are: cynicism, anger, desperation. When I saw myself turning my press pass to a policeman, asking to be exempt from weird, rules of coding , I realized : I gave up core principles or leave., I chose to leave. The country is at a political impasse, with an improbable wanna-be forever leader at the helm. . Is the timing of Mrs. Aquino’s death her final gift to the Filipino people? Instead of giving the gift to the world, it is time to give the gift to ourselves as a nation?

Courage, integrity, transparency, moral ascendancy, service over personal gain.The erosion of these virtues may explain why we are divided, why there exists this sense of helplessness. These past days both those who knew her well and those who had not met her but have been touched by her sincere love for people and country, had come out to tell their stories. Let me also add my own. I first met Cory, the main rallying figure during the protest marches organized by antiMarcos groups, two of which I was actively involved with Manindigan! and Concerned Women of the Philippines. We were part of the boycott against cronies and the “piso-piso” campaign during the snap election. We were surprised one day when she called saying she wan-

ted to talk to Bernie Villegas Joe Romero, Gabby Iglesias, Ben Mondejar and myself regarding a report on a multisectoral consultation that we had carried out. Here, we documented and analyzed perceptions and visions from people in several regions – their concerns regarding agriculture and agrarian reform, education, media, and other aspects of our social, political and economic life. Of course we were honored and flattered that she should consult with us and pleased to learn that she had read the alternatives proposed as she inquired whether they were viable. She was then considering whether she would accept the nomination for the presidency. What impressed us most was her humility, openness, and willingness to explore new ideas. Bernie Villegas and I, both academics, were later appointed to the Constitutional Commission and had the opportunity to translate frameworks and concrete proposals contained in that

Ayon pa sa mga kritiko, hindi naman daw siya naging instrumental sa pagbabalik ng demokrasya, sa halip nagtago sa isang kumbento sa Cebu kasama ng mga Pink Sisters nang sumiklab ang Kapangyarihang Bayan noong 22 Pebrero 1986. Hindi nalalaman na bumalik siya kinabukasan sa Maynila at sakay ng isang kotse, naglakbay pa sa kalagitnaan ng mga tangke ng diktadura. Hindi rin siya nagpapigil na magsalita sa harapan ng gusali ng POEA upang samahan ang mga tao. Bagama’t sina Min. Juan Ponce Enrile, Hen. Fidel Ramos, Butz Aquino at Jaime Cardinal Sin ang naging tagapanguna ng Kapangyarihang Bayan sa EDSA, ang damdamin ng mga mamamayan ay naihanda na ni Tita Cory nang magpatawag ito ng boykot ilang araw ang lumipas, at muntik nang bumagsak ang ekonomiya bilang pakikibaka laban sa diktadura. Tulad ni Rizal na inspirasyon nina Bonifacio at ng Himagsikang 1896, si Tita Cory ang inspirasyon ng Kapangyarihang Bayan noong 1986, ang isinigaw ng bayan upang pamunuan sila. Maging ang hindi paghingi ng bansa ng debt moratorium o debt repudiation na nagpanatili ng utang ng diktadura para ating bayaran ay isinisisi ng mga kritiko kay Tita Cory. Kung alam lamang nila na dahil dito napanatili ang ating dangal sa harap ng mundo, na nagtiwala siya sa mga Pilipino na muli nilang itatanghal ang kanilang bansa upang maging dakila ito at mababayaran din natin ang ating mga utang. Mukhang ang dapat itanong ay hindi kung binigo ba tayo ni Tita Cory kundi, “Binigo ba natin siya at ang ating mga sarili?” Ayon nga sa isang panayam na ibinigay niya sa Philippine Star

noong 2007, “People used to compare me to the ideal president, but he doesn’t exist and never existed. He has never lived.” Hindi santa si Tita Cory, bagama’t madasalin siya, alam kong sa kanyang kababaang loob hindi niya tatanggapin na dakilain siya bilang ganoon. Sa aking opinyon, hindi rin siya pambansang bayani tulad nina Rizal at Bonifacio na namatay para sa bayan, ngunit bayani siya tulad ng lahat ng nabubuhay para sa bayan ay bayani. Halimbawa na maging ang mga pinakasimple sa atin ay maaaring maging bayani. Hindi siya perpekto, ngunit ang kanyang puso ay nasa tamang lugar sa panahon ng mga mahihirap na pagpapasya. Ito ang nakita ng mga tao. Pinatunayan niyang wala nga siyang alam tulad ng ipinaratang sa kanya, “I admit that I have had no experience in cheating, stealing, lying or assassinating political opponents!” Modelo sa bawat lingkod-bayan at kawani. Ang ibinigay na parangal ng militar, pagpapaputok ng kanyon sa mga kampo ay isang vindication sa ginawang pang-aapi ng instutusyong militar sa kaniya at kay Ninoy noong Batas Militar. Kapag namamatay ang isang sikat na tao, ginugunita ang mga magagandang bagay lamang ukol sa namatay, ngunit kadalasa’y hindi pag-aaksayahan ng labis na panahon ng mamamayan. Ang mahabang pamamaalam ng bayan, ang mga taong lumabas sa kalsada, at nagpupugay sa buong daigdig ng Cyberspace, ay nagpapatunay na sa lahat ng kanyang nagawa, ang naaalala natin ay ang maybahay na pinakiusapan nating pamunuan tayo. Kinailangan natin siya, at dininig/ tinanggap naman niya ang mabigat na pakiusap na ito. Ayon sa kanyang talumpati sa Kongreso ng Estados Unidos noong 18 Setyembre 1986, “Wherever I went in the campaign, slum area or impoverished village. They came to me with one cry,

Some of our colleagues from civil society (representing farmers, women and the youth, human rights, and the religious), realized that we had been chosen by Cory herself, something that could never have happened under another presidency since we did not have either political or economic clout. If I were to name three people who made a significant influence in my life, one would be Cory. Every task I had subsequently undertaken was guided by Cory’s ideal of service for the common good. Cory’s governance style was to ensure fair and equitable participation of every sector of society. She respected the right of the Constitutional Commission to make decisions without interference from the Executive or any other external body. Exercising executive privilege would have been anathema to her. Indeed, she would have made a credible poster president when it comes to strict adherence to the rule of  continued on page 11 DEMOCRACY. Not food although they clearly needed it but DEMOCRACY. Not work, although they surely wanted it but DEMOCRACY. Not money, for they gave what little they had to my campaign. They didn’t expect me to work a miracle that would instantly put food into their mouths, clothes on their back, education in their children and give them work that will put dignity in their lives. But I feel the pressing obligation to respond quickly as the leader of the people so deserving of all these things.” Kung noong 1983, nagsimulang bumagsak ang diktadura, ang fearless forecast ko ay sa 2009 ay magdudulot, hindi ng pagbagsak ng isang rehimen, kundi nang pagmulat ng Pilipino na pumili ng tamang lider sa 2010, pagpigil nila sa makasariling kilos sa pagbabago ng Saligang Batas, at gawin ang makakaya upang sa sariling paraan, ituloy ang laban nina Ninoy at Cory sa loob ng marami pang taon. Pero sa aking palagay, ito na ang huling manipestayson ng “People Power” na makikita natin sa mahabang panahon. Isang lider sa kalibre lamang ni Cory ang makapagbubuklod noon. Si Tita Cory rin mismo ang nagpahiwatig maraming beses na hindi na dapat maulit ang EDSA. Dapat hindi tumigil sa ilang araw na pagpapakita ng pag-kakaisa ang mga tao. Kailangang kumilos para sa totoong “People empowerment.” Ipinakita ito ni Tita Cory sa pagtataguyod ng microfinance at edukasyon noong siya ay nabubuhay pa. Para sa akin, ang tunay na Kapangyarihang Bayan ay magsisimula sa pagbabago ng kalooban tungo sa kaginhawaang inadhika ng ating mga bayani mula Himagsikang 1896, hanggang sa Kapangyarihang Bayan 1986. Sa pagsisimula nating bigyang kahulugan ang ating pag-iral na mas malaki pa sa ating mga hangarin para sa sarili tulad ng sinabi ni Tita Cory, “I would rather die a meaningful death than to live a meaningless life.” Nang makapanayam ko siya sa kanyang opisina sa Makati noong 2003, sa kabila ng kanyang pagiging pormal, hindi ko napigilan na sabihin sa kanya na fan niya ako, at dahil sa kanya ipinagmamalaki kong Pilipino ako, na mahal ko siya. Hindi ako nagsisisi na sinabi ko yun noong buhay pa siya. Sa paghahatid natin sa kanya sa huling hantungan, muli nating sinasabi sa kanya, “Hindi ka namin iiwan sa laban dahil hindi mo kami iniwan. Aquino’s demise. For thirty minutes, I remained quiet and gathered my thoughts. The first thing that came to mind was yellow. This color has never been my favorite until a meek and reluctant yet defiant figure stood flashing the signature L or laban sign, proudly wore it twenty-three years ago. Neither was Tie A Yellow Ribbon my last song syndrome. The downtrodden morning greeting was no good way to start or even last the day. But everything yellow once more has painted the hue-less sky and overridden typhoon Jolina. August 2 — The second day of mourning was a feast of smorgasbord of news and sound bytes from people taking turns reminiscing Cory. Perennial political fiends could not help but glorify the remarkable deeds of the late president who in 1986 was merely an instrument of a lethargic and fearful nation that eventually regained freedom and democracy. Perhaps the most awaited story was Kris Aquino’s who appeared in her Sunday afternoon television program The Buzz from which she took a leave of absence as co-host during her mother’s critical days. The most visible and outspoken of Mrs. Aquino’s daughters recounted every detail of the family’s ordeal. I was weepy again. This was the second time I shed tears shamelessly. Any person who lost a mother not so long ago, would. For many Filipinos, she was a mother they wish they had. Occasionally I would choke up when poignant scenes and tearjerker statements on Tita Cory were shown on television. August 3 — It was impossible for me to reach the office in Intramuros. Roxas Boulevard was not passable. If I have given up and gone back home immediately, I would have not caught

The eight hours-long journey from the Manila Cathedral to Cory’s final resting place in the Manila Memorial Park beside her husband Ninoy Aquino in the family mausoleum, was a sight reminiscent of the late Ninoy’s interment — the only difference was in numbers. Had the weather cooperated, more people would have joined the funeral procession. But then again, both burials were record breaking. As I watched the entire event on television, that was only interrupted by partial regular programming, I wished I had gone out again and braved the erratic weather one more time. But as a sign of solidarity, some of us residents in the subdivision wore yellow clothes. In our home, we lit a candle surrounded with small ribbons and a Cory button pin which I bought from the Manila Cathedral a night before. There was another typhoon Kiko waiting to take over. I thought two typhoons during the entire bereavement were no match to the seven coup attempts the late President weathered during her term. The heaven must have grieved too. And the people did not seem to mind For me, the full honors rendered by the military for Cory Aquino at the Manila Memorial Park, was a defining moment for all Filipinos. Through peaceful ways, the nation joined her in putting an end to a dictatorial rule and in peace, thousands of Filipinos walked her to her eternal repose. It is honor that also defines the character of the ‘mother of Philippine democracy’ from start to finish. The final and critical days of President Cory up to the funeral offered memorable moments and things that will always remind us of her presence. Sincere, humble, simple, honest, so on and so forth. These descriptions redounded and consistently echoed by those closed to the late President, by people who worked with her, and by simple folks who had faith in her. But yellow will always be sharply associated with Cory.

This time, people from all walks of life took to the streets to show gratitude and love. For the Aquino family, this gesture was far more heartwarming than a State Funeral. August 4 — I woke up very early. I was going to drop by the Manila Cathedral which is just a stone’s throw away from my office. If I had to pay my last respects, I had to ready myself with the long line of people wanting to catch President Cory for the last time. I braved the rain and wind. I got wet. I bought some ribbons for family members and close neighbors to wear on the day of the burial the next day even if we only had to watch the entire final rites on television. For eighteen months and into her final days, Tita Cory was as frail as a wilting flower. But as her remains lie in state, she was as peaceful as a saintin-waiting. Quickly looking at her face, I thought the physical suffering has been rewarded with a blissful eternal rest. She had been a triumphant living hero. Like an obedient parishioner, I made the sign of the cross. Her countenance was a divine vision. The public viewing was temporarily halted noontime to give way to the necrological service at the Manila Cathedral. A few meters from the PPI office, we could here the prayers and music boom that solely engulfed the historical Intramuros. I would found out that when the viewing resumed, the queue of people stretched all the way to SM Manila. My conscience bothered me; so instead of just watching the eulogies on television early evening, I sashayed back to the Cathedral to merely feel the atmosphere and watch people patiently wait for their turn for final viewing of the late President’s remains. August 5 — “Minamahal kong mga kababayan…For the family, the Filipinos are worth it…I thank you for the privilege of being your child…Dad, it’s your turn to take care of Mom. You were her one and only love…It will take a lifetime for us to be okay…I love you, Mom. Paalam.” These were probably the most

It is perhaps simply a matter of perspective, but originally I was thinking that as soon as we teach the barangay units and the barangay enterprises how to computerize, they will soon discover on their own how to “internetize” (my word invention?). My thinking changed when Mr. Hans Koch convinced me that it should be the other way around that they have to be connected to the Internet first. Hans another new friend, he is an American who has adopted the Philippines as his new home. He is one of the founders of Syndeo Media, a social networking site just like Facebook. Putting two and two together, I now think that it would be a good goal to put both the barangay units and the barangay enterprises online, both of them having their own good reasons to do so. Of course, the barangay units have their own local government units (LGU) to depend on, but why not make them independent once and for all, with the help of technology? Knowledge is power we always say, but nowadays it is access to knowledge that makes us more powerful. You might say that the barangay units have other needs such as health, education and livelihood, but with connectivity to the Internet, these local villages could gain the knowledge that they need to become independent in meeting their health, education and livelihood needs. It is interesting to note that some cooperatives are already in the business of providing local services that are good for the environment. As a matter of fact, it could also be argued that any activity that would grow anything from the soil or the water is good for the environment. The only thing that is needed now is a means for the cooperatives to sell their products to the outside world, and selling online is certainly one good way. People are more important than machines I always say. It is for this reason that I am now calling on anyone and everyone who knows anything about computerization and “internetization” (another word invention?) to contact me, so that we could all work together in empowering the local villages. Ang bakod ng nasabing bahay ay may mga nakasabit ding dilaw na laso, ang kulay pampulitika na ginamit ni Cory mula noong 1985. Ayon sa mga historyador ng Bulacan, ang ama ni Cory na si Don Jose Cojuangco ay isinilang sa Barangay San Agustin, Malolos noong Hulyo 3, 1896. Ang kanyang mga magulang ay sina Melencio Cojuangco at Tecla Chiochioco na kapwa isinilang sa Malolos. Ang pamilya Cojuangco ay lumipat sa Paniqui, Tarlac noong 1896. Samantala, ipinagmalaki rin ni Kint. Cojuangco sa mga kasapi ng Sangguniang Panglalawigan na ang kanilang pamilya ay nagmula sa Malolos. Si Cojuangco ay dumalo sa sesyon ng Sangguniang Panglalawigan noong Agosto 3 kung kailan ay ipinaliwanag niya ang benepisyo ng pagtatayo ng plantang nukleyar.
