that the Nobel Prize of Asia has been awarded to names such as The Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa and Akira Kurosawa among others; great or small, I look up to all of them, but no Magsaysay Awardee has inspired and affected me much, that she changed the course of the history of a country and changed my destiny forever. “HINDI nabubusalan ang katotohanan,” ito ang katagang laging bukambibig ng mga mamamahayag sa lalawigan ng Bulakan tuwing mababanggit ang pangalan ni Gat Marcelo H. del Pilar, na ginugunita ang ika-100 taong kamatayan noong nakaraang Hulyo 4. Maging ang Pangulong Fidel V. Ramos ay nag-ukol ng pagpapahalagasa sa pagpapakasakit at hirap Gat Marcelo H. Del Pilar na dinanas ni Del Pilar, maipamulat lamang sa pamahalaang Kastila ang lisyang pamamalakad noon sa ating bayan. Isinaisang-tabi niya ang karangyaan sa buhay at minatamis na mawalay sa kanyang pamilya sa marubdub niyang pagnanasa na mapalaya ang ating bayan sa kamay ng mga banyaga, at sa maling pamamalakad nito. Sa paggunita ng kanyang ika-100 taong kamatayan, narito ang ilang pangungusap mula sa itinuturing na “Ama ng Pamamahayag sa Pilipinas”: “Ang kalayaan ay isa sa mahalagang biyayang bigay ng Diyos sa tao; dahil sa kalayaan ay nakaiilag tayo sa masama at nagagawa ang inaakala nating magaling. “Linikha ng Diyos ang tao, sinangkapan ang isip at loob at kalankap ng buhay na ipinagkaloob sa kanya ang ganap na kalayaan.” Kung ating lilimiing mabuti, kailangan natin ngayon ng maraming Del Pilar sa kasalukuyan na hindi mangingiming isiwalat ang mga hindi kanais-nais na nangyari sa ating pamahalaan. Ang tilamsik na panitik ni Del Pilar ang naging sandata sa paninikil noon ng mga Kastila, ang talim naman ng tabak ng panulat ng mga mamamahayag ngayon ang kanilang gagamitin upang putulin ang walang pakundangang pagyurak sa karapatang pantao ng ilan nating mga namiminuno. Huwag sanang maging bulag sa katotohanan ang mga kalahi ni Del Pilar, sapagkat “hindi nabubusalan ang katotohanan”, ayon na rin sa bayani ng Bulakan. Sana’y maialay natin sa kanyang ika-100 taong kamatayan ang katuparan ng kanyang panangarap at pinagbuwisan ng buhay.

Magbantay sa halalan DAHIL sa kumalat na hinala na nagkaroon ng hokus-pokus noong 2004 election sa naging resulta ng halalan, marahil ay marapat lamang na bantayan ang mga commissioner ng Comelec pagdating ng halalan. Nasaan na si Commissioner Virgilio “Garci” Garcillano at bakit hindi siya nakasuhan gayong may mga lumitaw na kinausap siya ni GMA habang nagbibilangan ng resulta noong 2004. Mabuti siguro ang mga commissioner ay dito na lamang sa Central Office ng Comelec sa Maynila at hindi kung saan-saan pa pumupunta kapag halalan. Lahat naman ng lalawigan ay may nakatalagang Comelec supervisor, bakit kailangang pang puntahan ng commissioner ang isang malayong lugar. Sa Maynila na lamang ang lahat ng commissioner at bahala na ang mga provincial supervisor sa mga lalawigan.

Sa isang tabi ng kanilang simpleng tahanan sa Barangay Caingin, Bocaue, ay tahimik na naglalaro si Jerome, 2. Bahagyang nagulat pa si Tess nang makita ang bayaw na si Pepe na humahangos, bandang alas-8:30 ng gabi. “Sumasakay ba sa pagoda si Mario at Marife?” tanong nito kay Tess. “Oo,” sagot ng huli. Bakit naman lulubog ’yon, naisip niya. Kahit kailan ay hindi nangyari ’yan. Taunang piyesta ng mahal na Poon ng Wawa sa Bocaue noon at ginaganap ang prusisyon ng mga bangka sa ilog ng Wawa. Ang pagoda, na ikinakarga sa ilang bangka at dinedekorasyunan para sa espesyal na okasyon, ang pinakamalaking atraksyon ng kasayahan. Maraming deboto ang sumasakay sa pagoda. Pagkaalis ni Pepe ay pumasok si Tess sa bahay, ayaw paniwalaan ang balitang hatid ng bayaw. Kakatalikod pa lamang niya nang marinig ang tunog ng ambulansya at ingay sa labas ng kanilang bahay. Lumabas siya at nagulat sa nakita. Nagkakagulo at nagtatakbuhan ang mga tao. Sumi-

sigaw ang mga ito ng “Lumubog ang pagoda! Lumubog ang pagoda!” Hindi niya alam kung bakit pero nakitakbo siya kasama ang mga ito. Nakita niya ang pinsang si Nok-Nok, na noo’y hinahanap siya upang sunduin. “Nasa gitna ng ilog sina Mario at Marife!” ’ika ni Nok-Nok, na nakasakay na sa pagoda ng lumubog at swerteng agad nakalangoy sa pampang. Humangos sila sa lugar na pinangyarihan. Pagdating doon ay hindi sila nakatuloy sa tabi ng ilog. Pinagbawalan sila ng mga barangay tanod, na noo’y rumeresponde at nagbabantay sa lugar na iyon na noo’y marami nang taong nagkakagulo. “Pumunta na lang kayo sa ospital,” sabi sa kanila. ‘Jackpots’ on the web OVER the last two weeks, I won the lottery thrice on Internet. And that excludes the seven times I hit the jackpot last month. So, how come I can’t toss tycoon Eduardo Cojuangco a “nameyour-prize” offer for those cocolevy-manacled San Miguel Corporation shares? My e-mail box is crammed with felicitation letters for striking a gold lode. “Your e-mail address won US$500,000,” Luckday International breathlessly informed me. At today’s rollercoaster foreign exchange rates, that’s a hefty P24.1 million. Can anybody tell me how I squeezed into the company of the moneyed few, like the “penniless” Imelda Marcos? Over 300,000 e-mail addresses were churned through a computer ballot system, writes Josephine Van Daal, lottery coordinator. Or was it Mr. Norris Carret? I forget now. But that’s nothing compared to Summerset International Lottery. They process more addresses, insists Mrs. Comfort Jose. And bingo! “You have there-

fore been approved (sic) for a lump sum pay out of one million euro”. “I don’t like millionaires,” Mark Twain once wrote. “But it’d be dangerous to offer me the position.” Me, too. But from Belgium, Nigeria to Iraq and Madrid, they’re elbowing each other aside to offer me the job. They all slobber over this instant millionaire. Are they psychic? How else could they figure that I secretly felt kinship with Teyve who, in Broadway’s Fiddler On The Roof, sang my own question to God:: “Would it spoil some vast eternal plan / If I were a wealthy man?” But you’re rich, insists Sarah Hofmman of the Euro-Foundation. I am? From Geneva, she reveals I won 1.5 million euros. Leonteen Garrnett of Belgium’s Lottery e-mails to announce: “You’ve been approved for a lump sum pay out of US$1,000,000 (sic).” I’m to collect the dough not later than July 30, she adds. Spain’s biggest lottery is named “El Gordo”, i.e., the “Fat One”. It makes the Irish sweep-

stakes look like peanuts. “You are therefore been approve (sic) for the lump sum pay out of euros 1.25 million.” At this rate, don’t you think I deserve a lifestyle check? I ask our neighbor-Ombudsman. “Are you nuts?” he snaps. Maybe. Blame those serial jackpot images dancing through my head. Why, I’d give Erap’s studentless Muslim Youth Foundation and Ferdinand Marcos shell philantrophies, in Lichtenstein, a run for their money. After all, “no one would have remembered the Good Samaritan if all he had were good intentions,” former UK prime minister Margaret Tatcher once said. “He had money as well.” By the time Loteria de la Primitiva in Madrid and Holland’s Paragon Promo tell of sums, waiting for my go-signal, I’m wary. What’s the catch? “A fool and his money are soon parted.” All the letters are phrased identically, down to the grammatical errors. Only the amounts vary. Simplicity and spiritual childhood IF we are interested in keeping our humanity, or at least our sanity, it may be good to be reminded about the need for us to develop, keep and strengthen our simplicity and spiritual childhood. This integral part of Christian asceticism should not be forgotten as we progress. With our neck-breaking pace of development, with its unavoidable dust cloud of complications, we need to realize more deeply that the way to go is not by being quixotic, tilting at windmills and grappling with phantoms, but by being simple. The temptation to be quixotic can be strong, since we always feel we can handle things by ourselves. Our sense of freedom and responsibility often blind us to the basic truth that we need to be grounded on God always to be able to live properly, let alone, do things rightly. This quixotic attitude can lead us to that situation of self-righteousness, denounced by Christ himself when he told some of the people’s leaders that “they have eyes, but don’t see, they have

ears, but don’t hear…” It’s the wide, easy, seemingly practical road to perdition, mentioned in the gospel. Simplicity is the way to objectivity, and to all the other values connected with objectivity. It keeps us in touch with reality, the one meant for us. We have to say this, because as human beings, we are capable of creating parallel realities. That’s our abiding problem. Of course, our subjective world will always vary from person to person. But at least this variety can still be linked to an objective reality. Our predicament is that we can have a subjective perception of things that has nothing to do with the objective reality anymore. It can be propped up merely by a system of rationalizations. In fact, even at this juncture, some of us can already question what this objective reality really is. This is the likely question of those who believe more in themselves than in God, of those who rely on reason while neglecting the faith.

Forward to Basics

For those who have faith, they can manage to escape the grip of their rational and sentimental subjectivity to go into an objective world outside of themselves. Without faith, one opens himself to the possibility of being invincibly imprisoned in his own world. Simplicity helps us accept and live the faith. It’s what makes us children who accept things first, who allow ourselves to be guided and taught, before asking questions, not out of unbelief but rather for greater understanding. Remember what our Lord said about the kingdom of heaven. He went as far as to say that it is for little children precisely because of their simplicity: “Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come to me. For the kingdom of heaven is for such.” (Mt

choosing our planet. One would be to help us see its beauty and rich resources being squandered by these machines. Another would be our role — yup, yours and mine — to take care of this lovely green globe and if we have to, to be ready to protect it. Third, that it takes machines to teach humans how to act — oh, the robots acted a whole lot better than the cued-in automatic rendering of Megan Fox and female companions with their obviously useless silicon accessories — like decent human beings. In reality, the robots were doing what they were “programmed” to do. The good ones were out to save the day and obviously the bad ones were out to ruin it. Parallel to these two opposing forces, however, were the persons who gave a very bad picture of human life and relationships. But isn’t this going off the

Carrots for your health’s sake “THE art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while Nature cures the disease,” Voltaire wrote a long, long time ago. Today, as someone adds, “The medicine of the future will no longer be remedial; it will be preventive; not based on drugs but on the best diet for health.” One of those that should be a part of a healthful diet is the carrot, known in the science world as Daucus carota. It was wellknown to the ancients and is mentioned by Greek and Latin writers. British playwright William Shakespeare highly regarded the carrot in one of his plays, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Medicinally, the carrot was used as a diuretic, stimulant, in the treatment of dropsy, flatulence, chronic coughs, dysentery, windy colic, chronic renal diseases and a host of other uses. Old writers wrote of a carrot poultice which had been found to mitigate the pain of cancerous ulcers. Eating the carrot is also good for allergies, anemia, rheumatism and a tonic for the nervous system. In addition, it is good for diarrhea, constipation (very high in fiber), intestinal inflammation, and cleansing the blood (a liver tonic). Traditionally, the carrot is recommended to weak, sickly or rickety children, to convalescents or pregnant women, its anti-anemic properties having been famous for a long time. Applied with honey, the leaves cleanse running sores or ulcers. Tea made with the seeds can promote the onset of menstruation. It is effective on skin problems including broken veins/capillaries, burns, creeping impetigo, wrinkles and sun damage. Carrots also help in stimulating milk flow during lactation. What most people don’t know is that the carrot is also effective against roundworms and dandruff. Pureed carrots are good for babies with diarrhea, providing essential nutri-

ents and natural sugars. Carrots are also supposed to help break wind and remove stitches in the side. Chewing a carrot immediately after food kills all the harmful germs in the mouth. It cleans the teeth, removes the food particles lodged in the crevices and prevents bleeding of the gums and tooth decay. Carrot soup is supposed to relieve diarrhea. Everyone knows carrots improve vision, as it provides the highest vitamin A content of all vegetables. There was this urban legend about British gunners in World War II, who were able to shoot down German planes in the dark because of their superior eyesight as a result of consuming carrots. (Actually, the legend arose during the Battle of Britain and was an attempt to cover up the discovery and use of radar technologies.) ‘The deformers’ NOTHING more new meets the eye in Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen. The movie made a rather good dent in its first two weeks of showing, but it had fallen short of receiving praise from movie critics and reviews. What do you expect? There isn’t much you can do with the plot of this type of film except to power it up with newer and leaner robots than before. Fans, however, will not be disappointed with the showcase of new Autobots and their Decepticon rivals. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough celluloid on this planet to film all that kicking-ass action as one robot pounds the other into scrap metal. It’s odd how the earth seems to be their playground to vent their short-circuited frustrations and convert our world into an alternative junkyard. There are many reasons for

track? Okay, helping the good bots save our world is something great, but using the movie as a pretext to litter the story with sexual innuendos isn’t. But from a moral point of view the one bad act about this film would be that the humans come out as moral deformers. Deformer Act 1: The dignity of the family and marriage. The parents of Sam (the hero of the movie) are shown to take their marital relationship in a rather perverted way. More help for Filipino inventors WHY not give tax breaks for inventors who are trying to build prototypes with their limited budgets? It’s already hard for them to raise the money to build these prototypes. Let us not make it even harder for them to put into form the ideas in their minds. And why not subsidize the costs of patenting these inventions worldwide? No single Filipino inventor has the resources to patent his invention in key global markets. The only way they could do this is if they get some government support. There could be more investors here if the “investment” highway is faster. The first step is to set up “Business One Stop Shops” at the local government unit (LGU) level. An idea came up in my show, to put up “investment clubs” for young start-up professionals. This idea is a perfect match for a new law that gives tax breaks to young investors who want to buy from the stock exchange. Another idea came up, to offer entry level stock options to anyone who is just starting to buy stocks, young or old. The idea is to come up with a short list of blue chip stocks that are known

to always increase in value, on top of being known to be declaring stock dividends regularly. For lack of a better name, these could be called “framed stocks”. Who knows that if we have more investors around, our inventors would also have a better chance of getting their projects funded? Sad to say, the venture capital market here is still in its infant stages. Our inventors should look into the potential of using light emitting diodes (LEDs) as components for new solar powered products. The product potential for this component is unlimited and as it is now Chinese inventors are ahead of the game. School Boards in areas that are “off the grid” should consider buying solar lamps for students who have no electricity at home. The budget for this could be taken from the local Educational Support Fund (ESF). This would also enable the families of the students to save about 250 pesos per month for kerosene. Are electric cooperatives engaged only in the selling of electric power? Could it be part of their mandate to provide lighting to off grid areas? If they could  continued on page 7

Back-to-work order ng DOLE dapat sundin TANONG: Good Evening, Sir! I’m sending you this letter to seek your help regarding our labor problem at Nikko Materials Philippines. Call me Jon of Laguna. I’m one of the employees of Nikko Materials Philippines. Last October 3, 2005, we (285 rank and file employee) had our strike at our plant in Biñan, Laguna by enclosing ourselves in the plant as protest to the refusal of the Management to negotiate on our CBA. And on the 8th of the same month we ended our strike because of the back-to-work order issued by Mr. Imson of the Department of Labor after a series of negotiations. We have a return-towork order but the inability of Labor to issue the writ of execution, 106 ended up terminated. Earlier last month the said officer of labor issued the CBA awarding P85 per day and P400 additional to our rice subsidy, evident that our argument/request to the management is attainable. We’re not just terminated, we are also harassed by the employer by not giving the benefits that we are entitled. The Labor Department seemed deaf and blinded. Almost seven months of picketing and rallying at their Department, but until today the Labor Department opted to release the Execution of back-to-work. Here is our response: first of all, if there is a back to work order coming from the Department of Labor and Employment, I will advice you strongly to return back to work. This is not only a means of showing your good faith on your fight with your management; it is also the right and legal thing to do, for there is an order directing you to return to work. This is a government of laws, not of men, we are won’t to hear every now and then. This only means that we should follow the orders of duly-constituted authorities, even if we think the orders are wrong. The right way of contesting the order which we perceive to be wrong is

to seek redress from the courts by filing the appropriate cases. If you have good grounds in support of your belief that the order is wrong, the courts will give you relief. If, on the other hand, you have no good grounds, then you can be sure the courts will rule accordingly. This kind of a problem cannot be solved by the simple expedient of the aggrieved party holding rallies and pickets. No government agency will act only on the basis of rallies and pickets. You must file a case, and let the courts rule on the matter. Secondly, on the issue of the 106 employees having been terminated, I am suggesting the filing of illegal dismissal cases on their behalf, against your employer. Again, resort to the courts, in this case the National Labor Relations Commission, is the only proper thing to do, to contest a decision of the management to terminate the employment of its employees and workers. ituturing na desisyon ng hukuman na maaaring ipatupad ng barangay mismo, kahit na hindi na dinadala pa ang kasunduan sa hukuman. Sa katunayan, kinikilala din ng nasabing Code ang kapangyarihan ng barangay na magpalabas ng tinatawag na writ of execution, o kautusan ng pagpapatupad, upang ipatupad na ang pinagkasunduan ng magkabilang panig ng mga barangay officials mismo. Ang kapangyarihang ito ng barangay ay kailangang isagawa nito sa loob ng anim na buwan matapos na malagdaan ng magkabilang panig ang kanilang kasunduan sa harap ng barangay. Upang mailabas ng barangay ang kanyang writ of execution, kailangang magsumite ng kahilingan ang partidong nagnanais mapatupad ang kasunduan. Sa kabilang dako, hindi pupuwedeng basta na lamang gibain ang inuupahang tirahan kahit na lumagpas na ang panahong pinagkasunduan upang umalis ang nangungupahan. Kung gigibain ng isang panig ang inuupahang tirahan ng walang kautusan ng hukuman, o di kaya ay ng wala silang nakasulat na kasunduan ukol dito, maaari siyang mademanda ng kasong malubhang pamimilit o grave coercion na pinarurusahan ng pagkakakulong sa ilalim ng Revised Penal Code. ‘Almas Que Van’ NOONG bata pa ako, naririnig ko ang Mama ko na tinutugtog sa piano ang music piece na Almas Que Van (Souls Who Have Gone). Kung minsan ay kinakanta niya pa ito. Ang piyesang ito ay itinatago ko pa hanggang ngayon kahit namumula na ang papel sa kalumaan at punitpunit na ang mga gilid. Sa kasalukuyan ay survivor ako kasi patay na ang Mama at Papa ko pati na ang dalawa kong kapatid. May cancer ako at katatapos lang ng chemotherapy (oral) at nagsisimula nang mag-radiation therapy (33 days) mula pa noong isang linggo sa San Juan de Dios Hospital. Dahil sa malayo ang paglalakbayan mula Bulacan hanggang ospital at dahil araw-araw ang gamutan, nakikituloy ako sa isang pinsan sa Tahanan Village sa loob ng BF Homes, Sucat, Parañaque. Noong namatay ang brother kong si Sergio ay doon siya inilibing sa Manila Memorial Park sa Parañaque. Dahil limang taon na hindi ako nakakadalaw sa kanyang puntod ay minarapat kong sumaglit noong Martes ng hapon dahil malapit naman ito sa BF Homes. Ang libingan niya ay katapat lamang ng kay Senador Ninoy Aquino at kayang-kayang lakarin. Ngunit anong gulat ko nang pagdating ko doon ay tumambad sa akin ang isa pang lapida sa katabing puntod ng kapatid ko. Patay na din pala ang asawa niya na balak ko pa namang bisitahin sa Pacita Complex, San Pedro, Laguna upang mapagusapan ang tungkol sa lupa namin sa Bocaue na may interesadong bumili. Nakalagay sa lapida na 2007 pa siya binawian ng buhay at sa buong pana-

Ang kanyang maybahay na si Pacita Montecillo ay isang retired teacher na tubong Cebu. Biniyayaan sila ng tatlong anak, sina Rona Jema, Rene Rey at Ruel Allan. Isang alaala sa paglubog ng pagoda  mula sa pahina 2 na sa kanilang bahay. Bandang 9:30 ng gabi nang magpasya si Tess na umuwi na muna matapos ang ilang oras na bigong paghahanap sa mag-ama. Ang panalangin na inaasam niya ay ang madadatnan niya ang kanyang mag-ama sa kanilang bahay, buhay at ligtas sa kapahamakan. Naglalakad siya nang makitang nakakulumpon ang mga kapitbahay sa harap ng kanilang bahay. Sinalubong siya ng mga ito at pinigilan siyang pumasok, ngunit nagpilit siya. Pagpasok niya sa pintuan ay tumambad sa kanya ang bangkay ni Marife, na noo’y inaayusan na. Hindi nakuhang umiyak ni Tess. Hindi na rin niya matandaan kung anu-ano ang kanyang ginawa ng mga oras na iyon dahil halos mawalan siya ng katinuan. “Nasaan si Mario? Nasaan si Mario?” tanong niya sa mga kapitbahay. Sinabi sa kanyang buhay ang kanyang asawa at nagliligtas ng mga biktima. Ngunit sa oras na iyon ay hinahanap na ng mga bayaw na sina Danny, Arling at Efren ang kanyang asawa sa mga ospital. Narinig nila nang banggitin ang pangalan ni Mario na isa sa mga nasawi. Nakilala siya ng mga reporter dahil sa kanyang kasuotan na Barangay Tanod ID. Matapos suyurin ang mga ospital sa Mt. Carmel Hospital sa Barangay Bunlo natagpuan ang bangkay ni Mario. Incidentally, the Champion of the Masses, then President Ramón Magsaysay, was their godfather. Years after Magsaysay, a dictator emerged on the throne at Malacañang — Ferdinand E. Marcos. Senator Ninoy Aquino became his foremost opponent. Marcos had him imprisoned when he declared Martial Law. Cory became, in Ninoy’s words, “sole support, source of comfort and wellspring of hope” for him when he was in prison for seven years and seven months. On her shoulder fell the pain of a wife of a political detainee. It was not only the Aquinos who suffered. All the Filipinos were denied the freedom of expression. Their right to be free was taken away from them and they lived in fear of the dictatorship, for anyone who dared challenge it would be taken away to be tortured or sometimes be killed. Cory and their children joined Ninoy for three happy years in Boston. But in spite of that, he decided to sacrifice. He returned to the Philippines to talk Marcos into dismantling his dictatorship. He was the only hope … Upon arrival, Ninoy was shot — dead! With Ninoy’s death, the dictatorship thought that it was all over. It was their greatest mistake. With Ninoy’s death, a sleeping nation was awakened to the abuses of the regime. They mourned his death and throngs marched in his funeral. And they made his widow, Cory Aquino, their rallying symbol. When Ninoy’s life ended, Cory’s fight began. A million signed up for the little housewife to run for president against the strongman Marcos. She accepted the call: A fight between David and Goliath!

Marcos questioned her qualifications, “She’s only a woman … What is she going to do when she becomes president?” Cory answered, “I admit that I have had no experience in cheating, stealing, lying or assassinating political opponents.” The people supported her all the way in the elections, but Marcos cheated and had himself re-elected. “Tama na, sobra na, palitan na!” Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile, and General Fidel Ramos broke away from the regime on February 22, 1986. Marcos ordered their arrest but it couldn’t be effected! Why not? The camps where the defectors were, which was situated along EDSA highway, became surrounded by two million people in the name of the housewife in yellow. With the sound of prayers and the shouts of “Coree! Coree!” the people blocked the menacing tanks of the regime. The turnaround of events now known in history as the People Power Revolution: Cory was installed as president after four days of peaceful protest by the people and Marcos fled to Hawaii never to return again! Yes! Cory Aquino was the lightning rod of the first successful revolution without a drop of blood shed. People Power was the contribution of the Filipinos to the world. Yes! We inspired the downfall of the Berlin Wall, the destruction of the Eastern Europe Communist Bloc, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, all carried out by the people without violence. Cory emerged as an international symbol of democracy. The RM Awards cited that when “she stepped down in favor of an elected successor … she had restored her country’s democratic institutions and its good name in the community of nations … She governed with integrity and the devout intentions to

do always what was best for the country and its people.” The citation added, “No Asian leader of our time can claim as much.” Many considered her presidency as a failure for, in their words, “little had changed with their lives.” And that People Power was inutile. I just turned two when People Power happened, too young to remember. But I could never accept that Cory and People Power were a failure. I believe she was God’s simple instrument in pinning down a tyrant and in bringing back democracy for all of us. Because of that, she had changed the lives of millions of people, even of the next generation, and the world was inspired with that. On a more personal level, she made way for me not to experience the hardships of a cruel regime, and for me to freely express myself as a writer (without suppression and censorship), that sole reason is enough for me to be inspired to protect and fight for this democracy even in simple ways. Today, at 67, she’s still active in safeguarding democracy from those who would attempt to take it. Because she has the credibility and moral authority, people still listen to her or seek her advice. I believe that as long as Cory is alive, and we will carry on her fight, we would remain free! She showed the world that if we would just be united as a people, we accomplish even the impossible. In her simplicity, she proved that even the simplest of us can accomplish great things. Ninoy described her, “Looming from the battle, her courage will never fade.” With her courage, we were never the same again … Cory paved the way in order for me to live free! She also made me feel proud to be Filipino. I love Cory Aquino!

Jose Saplan, hepe ng Aircraft Accident Investigation Board (AAIB), patuloy ang kanilang imbestigasyon sa mga pagbaksak ng mga eroplano sa Bulacan. Ipinaliwanag ni Colonel Saplan na sa kasalukuyan ay dumarami ang mga estudyanteng piloto sa Plaridel na nagmula sa ibayong dagat dahil sa pag-unlad ng aviation industry na bunga ng pag-unlad ng mga bansang India, Qatar at iba pang bansa sa South Asia at Middle East. Ang nasabing pag-unlad ay nangangahulugan ng pagtaas ng pangangailangan sa mga piloto. Inihalimbawa ni Saplan ang bansang Qatar na bumili ng 30 pampasaherong eroplano sa nagdaang dalawang taon.

If it weren’t for these “deforming acts”, the film would have been a good and decent sequel. Unfortunately, directors and producers had another image of man in mind: It’s a man’s movie so let’s boost his “macho robot image” plus some fuel of “hyper-testosterone plug-ins” that will make one come out of it really powered up as an unstoppable sex machine …” [WARNING: SPOILER] The movie ends with the Decepticons “retreating” for now to oil their wounds. The Autobots have saved the day again and will continue to guard — without pay — the earth. But who’s watching over our kids? And to think that this film’s rated PG-13! This will be a continuing battle for parents and guardians. ○

But we should always be aware of our need to develop this virtue of simplicity. We cannot take this duty for granted, because the logic of our flesh and the logic of the world tend to complicate us. Ito ay ilan lamang sa mga sangkap ng mararangyang piyesta sa Bulacan na unti-unting nababawasan, ngunit magpapatuloy dahil sa pananampalataya at relihiyong kalakip ng mga pagdiriwang na nagsimula ilang daan taon na ang nakaraan. Ang mga buwan ng Hulyo hanggang Setyembre ay karaniwang inuulan kaya’t madalang ang piyesta, ngunit pagdating ng Oktubre nagbabalik ang novena at prusisyon para sa Birhen ng Santo Rosaryo; ang Nobyembre ay tinatampukan ng mga pagnanakaw ng manok sa Araw ng mga Kaluluwa at mga Santo; at tampok kung Disyembre ang Simbang Gabi at Panuluyan. Ang pagdiwang ng mga

piyesta sa ilog ay kasalukuyang pa ring isinasagawa sa mga bayan ng Calumpit, Paombong, Hagonoy, Bocaue, Bulakan at Obando, at sa pampangin ng Malolos. Ito ay karaniwang tinatawag na Libad sa Calumpit, Pagoda sa Paombong, Hagonoy, Bocaue, Bulakan at Obando; at Ligiran naman sa Malolos. Ang pagdiriwang ng piyesta sa mga kailugan ay mayroong kaugnayan din sa matatandang pamamaraan ng pamumuhay ng tao dahil noong unang panahon, ang katubigan o kailugan ang pangunahing dinadaanan ng transportasyon o mga sasakyan. Ang pagdiriwang ng piyesta sa gitna ng bukid ay may kaugnayan sa panahon ng anihan. Ayon kay Bautista, nagsisipagtayo ng mga damara upang maging silungan sa pagdadausan ng misa sa bukid, samantalang ang mga kababaihan ay nagsisipagluto ng puto, kutsinta, kalamay at suman, ang mga pinatabang baboy at manok ay niluluto, pagkatapos ay mag-iinuman ng alak tulad ng ginebra at serbesa na dala ng hacendero. Ang gumagastos sa handaan kapag piyesta ay kapwa ang mga magsasaka at hacendero, ngunit mas malaki ang ginagastos ng huli. Tampok ang pasasalamat sa mga pambayang piyesta, ngunit hindi lang isang hacendero o negosyante ang gumagastos. Maging ang damarang pinagdadausan ng misa sa bukid ay napalitan ng mararangyang altar ng simbahan. Ayon kay Bautista, ang pambayang piyesta ay karaniwang nasusundan ng halos isang linggong pagtatanghal ng moro-moro. Ang piyesta naman ng mga hayop ay tampok sa Pulilan kung saan ay lumuluhod ang mga kalabaw, at sa Plaridel kung saan ay tampok ang mga kabayo. Ang mga piyestang debosyonal naman ay ipinagdiriwang pa rin sa mga bayan ng Malolos, Sta. Maria, Hagonoy, Baliwag at San Miguel.
