Ang piyesta at pagkakaisa ANG pagdiriwang ng piyesta ay isa sa mga pagkakataon sa buhay ng isang pamayanan kung kailan nagkakaisa ang mga kasapi nito. Hindi madali ang paghahanda sa pagdiriwang ng isang piyesta. Karaniwan ay inaabot ito ng isang taon o higit pa. Bawat isa ay kumikilos, mula sa mga kabataan hanggang sa katandaan. May mga naghahanda ng makukulay na banderitas na nagsisilbing palamuti sa mga kalye, masaganang pagkain at inumin, mga kasuotang gagamitin sa prusisyon, at mga premyo para sa iba’t ibang timpalak, palaro at paligsahan. Maging ang pagkumbida sa mga magsasagawa ng palabas, mga musikong tutugtog sa araw ng pagdiriwang, at mga paring mangunguna sa pagsasagawa ng misa ay kailangan din ng mahaba at maingat na pagpaplano. Hindi man aktibo sa paghahanda ang buong pamayanan ay hindi maitatanggi ang kanilang paglahok. Ito ay sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay ng mga kontribusyong kakayahan at salaping gugugulin sa minsan sa isang taong pagdiriwang. Ang totoo, isang palaisipan sa marami, dayuhan man o Pilipino, ang pagdiriwang ng piyesta. Ito ay dahil na rin sa kakaibang pagkakaisa ng bawat kasapi ng isang pamayanan, at kahandaang gumugugol ng salaping kinita sa buong taon para sa isa o dalawang araw na pagdiriwang, samantalang ang pagkakaisa at kahandaang iyon ay hindi makita o maihandog sa ibang adbokasiya katulad ng pangangalaga sa kalikasan, mabuting pamamahala, pagiging makabayan, at iba pa. Hindi pa nga ba naghihilom ang sugat sa sikolohiyang Pilipino, na bunga ng mahabang panahong pagkaalipin sa mga kamay ng banyaga? O tunay lamang na hindi pa tayo handang kumilos bilang isang lipi, bilang isang pamayanan, bilang isang bansa? Ang mga katugunan sa mga katanungang iyan ay abot-kamay natin, kung ating bibigyan ng panahon at malalim na pagsusuri ang kalinangan ng ating lipi sa pagdiriwang ng mga piyesta. Ang kalinangang ito na pinagyaman ng panahon at pinanday ng mga pagsubok ay sariling atin, ngunit kailangan nating himayin ang bawat hibla nito upang higit nating maunawaan ang iba’t ibang sangkap na bumabalot dito. Sa ganitong paraan, ating malinaw na makikita ang sangkap ng pananampalatayang Pilipino na masasalamin sa mga iba’t ibang pamamaraan ng pasasalamat, pagsamba’t panalangin sa Maykapal. Sa huli, makikita natin na ang liping Pilipino ay may takot sa Diyos. Kailangan nating pagyamanin ito sapagkat sinasaad sa Bibliya na ang takot sa Diyos ay simula ng karunungan. At ang karunungan ang susi sa maunlad na pamayanan.

Playing our song? “THEY just lie there / And they die there.” Nat King Cole crooned that line, from the 1950 song Mona Lisa, into Grammy’s Hall of Fame. Here, that line describes cases crammed in a semiparalyzed Ombudsman. “Deeper than politics, and larger than individuals, are institutions,” cautions Philippine Human Development Report (PHDR) 2009. “( They ) structure human interactions, (specially where) “fundamental change is needed, but has not occurred.” PHDR analyzes the Ombudsman (OMB) and other institutions, politics and their impact of human development. This biennial study has been published since 1990. The United Nations Development Programme and New Zealand co-sponsor this latest edition. “The constitution patterns our OMB on Sweden’s ombudsman of 1809. Independent of the executive, this official defended rights of citizens. Scandinavian and other countries adopted this innovation. How do we compare? Over a

12 year period, OMB took cognizance of 9,826 criminal cases. Almost 58 percent are unresolved, PHDR found. So are 61 percent of 9,033 administrative cases. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo scoffs at claims of OMB institutional rigor mortis “From its dismal past record, (OMB’s) conviction rate increased 500%,” she declared in her 2008 State of the Nation Address. Credit Ombudsman Simeon Marcelo for that, says PHDR. From 2002 to 2006, Marcelo instituted reforms that “spilled over”. After Marcelo’s resignation due to “ill health”, Ms. Arroyo named the chief presidential legal counsel — and First Gentleman’s schoolmate — as Ombudsman Under Merceditas Gutierrez, conviction rates slumped “dramatically to 14.4 percent by first semester of 2008,” PHDR noted. Rates (dipped) to as low as 5 percent in March, then 3 percent in May. It was zero by June — when Ms. Arroyo’s speechwriters were drafting her 2008 Sona.

Did the presidential wordsmiths know of OMB’s rapid erosion? If not, they should have been cashiered for incompetence. If they knew, then they stitched into Sona a lie. That, too, is a firing offense. Did the President know — and consent? Three months after Ms. Arroyo’s Sona, Sandiganbayan disposed of 349 cases. Only 25 resulted in convictions: a measly 7 percent. How will she report this shabby track record in next month’s Sona? Abangan. Led by former Senate President Jovito Salonga, 31 civil society leaders, meanwhile, sought to impeach Ms. Gutierrez. They cited high profile cases: from collusion in bids for World Bank road construction loans to the euro generals scandal. Controversy over House Resolution 1109 on charter change froze action on this rap . But few have illusions. A Malacanang stamp-pad, the Lower House will junk this case. Ms. Gutierrez then joins Luzviminda Tancangco of Comelec in a grey “honor roll”:  continued on page 7

Recovering wisdom I’M afraid it’s increasingly looking and sounding like it’s just as a word. Wisdom is now confined and restricted to the world of vocabulary, to be used—molested and prostituted, would be the better terms—only when some formal occasion calls for it, which is obviously few and far between. This is the tragedy of our times. Many of us don’t know anymore what it’s all about, much less, what it involves and requires. Worse, we don’t seem to mind. What’s supposed to be an object of intense desire is now practically dead and extinct in our minds and hearts. Firstly, because we already are floating on a vast, almost shoreless ocean of data and information. We just take our pick, and we can already sound sensible enough to survive and make do with whatever situation there is. Besides, the others don’t know any better. All play the same game. The prevailing mindset is that we just need to contend ourselves with opinions and views. As much as possible, we should refrain from making cat-

egorical declarations of right and wrong, of good and evil. Our understanding of freedom now appears detached from its relation to truth. It has become purely subjective. This is the ethos now, what is in, what is politically correct. What can still contribute and complicate the matter is that with all the problems and pressures we are facing these days, we seem to be forced to be simply practical in our reactions and behavior. We are always tempted to leave the high-sounding wisdom behind. Wisdom is seen as something abstract not concrete, remote not immediate, idealistic not realistic. At best, only a few gifted and privileged individuals can worry about it. It’s not meant for all. There can be many other factors. But what’s clear is that we should realize we need to recover this gift and virtue if we are to remain first of all human and then ultimately as children of God. Our human condition needs wisdom. It is what connects us to

the ultimate and complete truths that we can and ought to know. And not only to know, but also to love, to delight, because these truths are supposed to make us happy or to respond to the deepest yearning of our heart and soul. For Christian believers, wisdom is understood as a “gift which perfects the virtue of charity by enabling us to discern God and divine things in their ultimate principles, and by giving us a relish for them.” In the Book of Revelation, it is the light that abides in a person, such that “night shall be no more, and they shall not need the light of the lamp, nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God shall enlighten them.” (22,5) Wisdom can be had by anyone, anytime, anywhere. Everything can be made use of to find, develop and exercise wisdom. The poet and the farmer, with God’s grace received with the proper dispositon, can have it. They can arrive at the same truth even if pursued through different ways.  continued on page 4

Treasures of God LAST June 19, on the occasion of the Solemnity of our Lord’s Sacred Heart and a day of prayer for the sanctification of the clergy, Pope Benedict XVI inaugurated a Jubilee Year for Priests in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the "dies natalis" of John Mary Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests worldwide. This brings to mind something that the Holy Cure of Ars once said in his catechesis that ‘the Christian’s treasure is not found in this world but in Heaven. For this reason, one’s thoughts ought to be constantly oriented towards this treasure.’ This moves us and helps us to examine ourselves. Unfortunately, in our times it seems that Heaven is reduced to children’s storytelling and daydreamings. The present-day Christian seems to find himself all too engaged in earthly affairs

that he forgets to lift his eyes to Heaven and renew his desires of possessing it. As a result, God wanted his priests to be the very instruments to recall to men their destiny to this eternal communion of love with God. Benedict XVI reminds the priests of their divine mission. He illustrates this using the words of the Cure of Arts: “Without the Sacrament of Holy Orders, we would not have the Lord. Who put Him there in that tabernacle? The priest. Who welcomed your soul at the beginning of your life? The priest. Who feeds your soul and gives it strength for its journey? The priest. Who will prepare it to appear before God, bathing it one last time in the blood of Jesus Christ? The priest, always the priest. And if this soul should happen to die [as a result of sin], who will raise it up, who will restore its calm and peace?

Again, the priest. ... After God, the priest is everything!” Moreover, the Cure adds: "(…) What use would be a house filled with gold, were there no one to open its door? The priest holds the key to the treasures of heaven: it is he who opens the door: he is the steward of the good Lord; the administrator of His goods. ... Leave a parish for twenty years without a priest, and they will end by worshipping the beasts there. ... The priest is not a priest for himself, he is a priest for you". *** Now, if Heaven is man’s treasure, –where our Supreme Goodness God Himself dwells– then what would God consider His treasure on earth? The answer, rather bold, is the priest. This was precisely what the holy Cure of Ars frequently said: "The  continued on page 7

Students of life RECENTLY, I met a friend who arrived from the United States three weeks ago. “I am staying here for good,” he told me. To prove it, he said he sold all his properties in the US. “The economy out there is not so good. I think it will become worse in the coming years.” During our talk, he told me of another friend who is now living in Manila. This friend, he said, had been in college for several years already and he never managed to graduate. “Will you be a student for life?” His friend corrected, “No, I won’t be but I will always be a student of life.” In a way, all of us are students of life. No one is spared from this fact. Every day, we go through things that we have not experienced before. “Life,” Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “is a succession of lessons, which must be lived to be understood.” Goh Lay Kuan, Singapore’s doyenne of classical dance, was 19 when she commenced formal training as a classical ballerina. “Usually, a ballerina starts training seriously from 12,” she said, “so I counted the number of extra hours I needed to redeem the lost time and it came to ten hours a day.” For three years while studying at the Victorian Ballet Guild in Melbourne, Australia, Goh worked with maniacal energy and determination, practicing up to ten hours a day, six days a week. Her efforts eventually paid off, and she graduated with honors. In 1964, after working for various dance companies in Australia, Goh returned to Singapore where she discovered there was no arts scene to speak of. With her playwright husband, Kuo Pan Kun, she founded the Practice Performing Arts School and helped push dance into the cultural mainstream while forging a reputation as one of the nation’s premier dancers.

Starting from scratch in Singapore, she said, “taught me the philosophy that if you want to be a good cook, it’s important to learn how to cook with the minimum ingredient. Life is short and tortuous. One does not have a choice to arrive in or exit from this world. You just make the best of what you have.” In other words, even if she already excelled in dancing, she was still a student when it comes to running a dance school. The good thing is that she never quit learning. She managed to come up with a principle that became her credo on life. “Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through,” said Anais Nin. All of us have to go through the journey of life. In the film, Star Trek: Generations, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) told the viewers: “Time is a companion that goes with us on a journey. It reminds us to cherish each moment, because it will never come again.” “Love the moment,” Corita Kent urged. “Flowers grow out of dark moments. Therefore, each moment is vital. It affects the whole. Life is a succession of such moments and to live each is to succeed.” Journey is just one of the metaphors used by people to describe life. J. Richard Sneed reminded, “Life is described in one of four ways: as a journey, as a battle, as a pilgrimage, and as a race. Select your own metaphor, but the finishing necessity is all the same. If life is a journey, it must be completed. If life is a battle, it must be finished. If life is a pilgrimage, it must be concluded. Scientific cooperation JUNE 18 was a very important day for my TV show. It was the day when I had the honor of having Ambassador Edsel T. Custodio as my guest. The good Ambassador is now the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs for International Economic Relations (IER). He is also the Senior Official Minister of the Philippines for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum. July 2 will also become a very important day for my show. It will be the day when Deputy Director General Rolando G. Tungpalan of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) will guest in my show. He is also concurrently the Official Economic Spokesperson of the government, in tandem with Prof. Gary B. Olivar who also holds the same title. Already a regular guest in my show, Prof. Olivar will now be joined by Usec Custodio and Usec Tungpalan as regular guests, thus establishing my show as a major source of official information about economic matters, a very critical need for my audience that is generally composed of stock traders, analysts, investors, businessmen

and entrepreneurs. Economic information is one thing, economic cooperation is another. Knowing the nature of their work, I could already see that these three professionals could contribute greatly to the consensus to work towards economic cooperation, a consensus that has gradually emerged among my regular guests. I know Edsel from way back, when I was still a Press Attaché and he was still a Trade Attaché. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is very fortunate to have him, considering his wealth of experience in trade promotion, his main function now. I also know Gary from way back. We were both University Councilor in UP Diliman, although he belonged to an earlier Council. Just recently, he became my professor in Language of Business (LOB) for Journalists, a short course that I took at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). Our predicament is that our natural tendency for truth, and everything that truth stands for—joy, peace, beauty, harmony, etc.—is almost always abducted and frustrated by an endless number of causes and factors. Lively town’s stench of death BY RUBEN B. CAL / PNA BOCAUE, Bulacan — The stench of death bespeaks the gloom hanging over this lively town of Bocaue — home of fireworks and cabarets — as residents mourned the death of at least 278 people in the worst fluvial tragedy in the country. The disaster is particularly painful because most of the families living near the banks of the Bocaue river have children or relatives who drowned in the sinking of a pagoda boat Friday night, July 2. It was just two days before the town fiesta. Divers from the Philippine Navy and Coast Guard have retrieved 248 bodies from the murky river as of 4 p.m. July 3. Another 22 persons reported missing are believed dead, according to Brig. Gen. Eugenio Reyes, commander of the National Capital Region Defense Command (NCRDC) who is supervising the rescue operations. “We expect bloated bodies to surface later this afternoon or early evening,” Reyes said. Three teams of frogmen from the navy and Coast Guard have been scouring the Bocaue river for drowning victims since Friday night when the floating shrine bearing the town’s patron, Krus ng Wawa (Holy Cross), capsized. The floating shrine was believed to have some 500 people on board. Antoniete Borromeo, a Coast Guard frogman told the Philippines News Agency (PNA) Saturday afternoon he had recovered 15 bodies, mostly those of

young boys and girls and two pregnant women. He said rescue operation have been hampered by the zero visibility of the murky river. “Like the blind, we just dove and groped our way touching objects to determine if these are human,” Borromeo said. Despite the difficulty, he said frogmen continued to search the area where the floating pagoda sank, hoping to find more victims. Borromeo said that although frogmen are said to have nerves of steel, he choked when he saw a pregnant woman clutching her six-month-old baby in her breast. He said he could barely stomach the tragic sight. But the job had to be done. He retrieved the bodies and brought them to a waiting rubber boat. Many of the shocked spectators who saw the dead mother and child held their tears back by biting their lips. Senior Supt. Romeo Acop, Bulacan provincial director of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said that his intelligence officer, Chief Inspector Danilo Garcia, his wife and their child died in the tragedy. Interior and Local Government Secretary Rafael Alunan III who rushed to Bocaue said overloading of the floating shrine resulted in the worst river disaster in living memory. The Bocaue tragedy recalled the sinking of the MV Doña Paz in the late ’80s off Mindoro Island. As many as 5,000 people died in that disaster.

But the fluvial procession mishap was doubly tragic considering that the disaster occurred in a 60 meter wide river where help could have been immediate and yet many drowned. The floating pagoda was placed on three boats for the fluvial prayer novena for Bocaue’s patron “Krus ng Wawa” in connection with the annual town fiesta on Sunday, July 4. Jose Salonga Jr., 48, a devotee, agreed with Secretary Alunan that the boat was overloaded. Salonga who witnessed the sinking said he saw the pagoda tilting to the right when a number of passengers suddenly rushed to the port side. He said he could not understand why the organizers of the river procession allowed the overloaded floating shrine to depart. Salonga said he was about 100 meters from the floating pagoda when it departed from where it was moored. He said he even heard the loudspeaker blare that the pagoda would not depart unless some of the passengers disembarked. He said some people heeded the call to disembark but a number went back, followed by a throng of devotees. “From the start it was obvious that the boat was overloaded,” Salonga said. He said he just shook his head in disbelief as the tragedy unfolded before his eyes.

Ayon kay Reggie Dela Fuente, ang pangulo ng Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) ng bayang ito, ang disenyo ng bawat miniature pagoda na ginawa ni Dr. Yanga ay katulad ng disenyo ng aktuwal na pagoda na ginamit sa prusisyon sa ilog. Ayon kina Regie Dela Fuente, taga-pangulo ng PPC, at Rodelio Concepcion, tagapag-ugnay ng PPC, maraming pagbabago ang kanilang ipinatupad sa paggawa ng pagodang gagamitin sa prusisyon sa ilog upang matiyak ang kaligtasan ng mga lalahok sa taunang pagdiriwang. Una, ani Concepcion, mas maliit ang pagodang gagamitin kumpara sa ginamit noong 1993; ikalawa, ang pagiging maliit ng pagoda ay nangangahulugan na limitado ang bilang ng sasakay doon; at ikatlo, ang paglalayag ng pagoda ay isasagawa lamang sa araw ng kapiyestahan, hindi katulad noong bago maganap ang trahedya na halos isang linggong gabi-gabing naglalayag ito at tigib ng sakay na tao. Ayon kay Concepcion, ang pagodang gagamitin sa Linggo ay unang ginamit noong 2006, nang simulan muli ang prusisyon sa ilog. “Reusable ’yung pagoda natin,” aniya, ”dahil mga drum na plastic ang nagpapalutang doon at may platform na may lapad na 20 talampakan at may habang 30 talampakan kung saan itinatayo ’yung disenyo ng pagoda.” Ang dating pinagsasakyan ng pagoda ay mga pituya na pinagdikit-dikit at nilapatan ng mga tabla na nagsilbing platform o tuntungan ng mga taong sumasakay doon. Ayon kay Concepcion, noong 2006 ay 60 drum na pinagdikit-dikit ang gamit nila, ngunit ngayong 2009 ito ay dinagdagan pa nila ng 12 upang mgaing higit na matatag iyon. Ang mga taong sasakay sa platform ay limitado lamang sa 50, ani ng tagapag-ugnay ng PPC sa pagpapagawa ng pagoda. “Kung tutuusin ay mas nakakatipid kami ngayon dahil resuable yung platform ng pagoda, hindi katulad noong bago maganap ang tragedy na taun-taon ay nagrerenta kami ng pituya,” aniya. Sinabi naman ni Dela Fuente na simula noong 2006 ay muling nagbalik ang sigla ng pagdiriwang ng piyesta ng Krus sa Wawa. “Nakabangon na ang mga tao, naghilom na ang sugat na iniwan ng trahedya,” ani Dela Fuente na nagsisilbing co-chairman ni Fr. Jovi Sebastian sa PPC. Si Father Sebastian ang kura paroko ng parokya ng St. Martin of Tours sa Bocaue. Ayon kay Dela Fuente, noon lamang 2006 muling nagsagawa ng prusisyon sa ilog na nagsilbing hudyat para sa muling pagbuhay ng tradisyong “ligiran”. Ang “ligiran” ay nagsimula ilang taon matapos matagpuang nakalutang ang isang itim na krus sa bunganga ng ilog ng Bocaue noong 1850. Ito ay tinawag na “Krus sa Wawa” at naging sentro ng debosyon ng mga residente matapos magpakita ng mga himala. Ang una ay noong 1868 kung kailan nasunog ang simbahan ng bayan, ngunit himalang natira at hindi nasunog ang itim na krus. Sinundan ito ng mga sunod-sunod na kalamidad simula noong 1881 katulad ng malakas na lindol at mapanalantang bagyo na naghatid ng pagkalat ng epidemya ng kolera. Sa kabila ng mga kalamidad na ito, nakabangon ang bayan ng Bocaue dahil sa debosyon ng mga residente sa Mahal na Krus sa Wawa. Noon namang 1891, sinabi ng mga matatanda na sa hindi malamang dahilan ay biglang nawala ang mga isda sa kailugan ng Bocaue. Ngunit, matapos magsagawa ng siyam na araw na novena o “lotrina” ay muling nagbalik ang maraming isda sa kailugan.

It is as though our Lord were living his own words when He said, “Where your treasure is, there also is your heart.” What makes a treasure? It is definitely something in its priceless qualities. But its value is not something given by the object itself, but by the one who gives it a specific importance. Thus, water to a man dying of thirst is more valuable than all the gold of the world. This is and must be the only consolation of priests and seminarians: to have God as their appraiser. Since eternity, God has searched for them, found them, and prepared them and finally possessed them with the price of His Precious Blood to be holy and unblemished before His presence. Therefore, as His treasures, the sacred ministers cannot be passive to the grace of the priesthood. They must strive each day to be attractive to God, to be more valuable and useful by serving through the constant effort to become witnesses of prayer, of sacrifice and of being generous dispensers of the Sacraments of God, especially through the devote celebration of the Holy Mass and through the fatherly dispensation of God’s forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance. Benedict XVI writes that “Pope Paul VI rightly noted, ‘modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.’ Lest we experience existential emptiness and the effectiveness of our ministry be compromised, we need to ask ourselves ever anew: ‘Are we truly pervaded by the Word of God? Is that Word truly the nourishment we live by, even more than bread and the things of this world? Do we really know that Word? Do we love it? Are we deeply engaged with this Word to the point that it really leaves a mark on our lives and shapes our thinking?’” Only by sincerely living these points will we no longer project ourselves, but only the brilliance of God’s Fatherly love, mercy, and peace. This is what authentically awakens our brothers and sisters to the perennial value of their Christian calling and thus become gifts of God. As the priest strives to be more precious to the eyes of God, Christ hides him for Himself within His Sacred Heart, like a treasure hidden in a field, like a pearl of great price. Then one day, St. John Mary Vianney says, “In Heaven will he fully realize what he is.” There he will be shown how he was God’s delight and the consolation and joy of the blessed in Heaven. ○

Also a regular guest in my TV program, Ernie and I discussed the fact that both the Mekong River and the Ohio River were brought back to life, giving us the hope that the Pasig River, or at least their portion of it could also be resurrected. What could possibly be the connection between Edsel, Ronnie, Gary and Ernie? As head of the DFA-IER and APEC-SOM, Edsel has direct access to many material and human resources that could be harnessed towards the goal of river clean-ups. As joint Economic Spokesmen, Ronnie and Gary are in a position to support economic initiatives, including environmental actions. As head of NEPA, Ernie has a large mass base that could also be mobilized towards this goal. It was Mr. Joseph Reynolds who first told me about the fact that the Pateros River is in effect no longer a river, because it has practically become a dumpsite for garbage, with hardly any water to see. He suggested that any attempt to clean up the river should also be accompanied by massive tree planting, to prevent further erosion and to strengthen the water holding capabilities of the river banks. As I told him about our plan to clean up the Pateros River, Joe brought forward the argument that the best place to start the clean up is the Sierra Madre mountain range, because not unless these mountains are cleaned, debris from it will always flow into the river system that includes the rest of the Pasig River, Laguna Lake and Manila Bay as well. Joe is a man of action, and he has the real track record of actually being able to revive fifty hectares of denuded mountains, bringing it back almost to the natural forest that God had made. I believe that he is right, but now he has awakened us to the reality that it is not enough to clean our rivers, we must also clean the mountains where the debris comes from. We are facing a big task ahead of us, but with the help of Edsel, we could bring in the foreign scientists who could provide the scientific solutions to this big problem. Ang pahayag nilang 10 ay sa kabila na tumaas sa 32 ang nagpositibo sa lalawigan mula sa unang 10 kaso ng “swine flu” na naitala sa ikalawang linggo ng Hunyo. Narito ang mga kaganapan sa Bulacan hinggil sa nakakahawang sakit mula noong Hunyo 22. •Nanawagan ang mga health official na huwag matakot at huwag iwasan ang mga tao na nagpositibo sa A H1N1 dahil nagsigaling na ang mga ito at hindi na makakahawa. •Nagbalik na sa klase ang walong estudyanteng nagpositibo sa A H1N1 matapos ang 10 araw na suspensiyon ng klase sa Donya Candelaria Meneses Duque High School sa bayan ng Bulakan noong Hunyo 22. neighbors.” Sinabi niya na ang mga kapamilya at kapitbahay o ang mga taong may close contact sa mga nagpositibo sa A H1N1 ay kailangan lamang na magsagawa ng precautionary measures katulad ng tamang paghuhugas ng kamay. “Everyone must bear in mind that they are observing precautionary measures not only to avoid A H1N1 but also other common diseases as well,” ani Dr. Gomez.

Kinumpirma ito ni Dr. Rio Magpantay, direktor ng Department of Health (DOH) sa Gitnang Luzon. Ayon kay Dr. Magpantay walang dapat ikatakot ang mga tao partikular sa bayang ito dahil lahat ng nagposotibo sa “swine flu” ay nagsigaling na at hindi na makakahawa. Batay sa tala ng provincial health office, umabot na sa 27 ang positibo sa A H1N1 sa lalawigan ng Bulacan kabilang ang 17 bagong kaso noong Hunyo 24. Ito ay nadagdagan pa ng lima noong Hunyo 25. Ayon kay Dr. Gomez, ang 17 bagong nagpositibo ay matatagpuan dito sa bayan ng Bulakan. Kabilang sa kanila ang mga mag-aaral sa elementarya, ani Gomez. Gayunpaman, aniya, sa kabila ng pagiging positibo sa A H1N1 ng mga magaaral ay hindi na nagsuspinde ng klase.
