Town hall Housing the town hall since 1918, this Renaissance palace owned by the counts of Rosenberg was built in 1650 and has an interesting staircase.
1: Klagenfurt’s town hall in a blaze of light – © Ferdinand Neumüller Neuer Platz square and the 2 “Lindwurm“ fountain This square forms the heart of the new town, work on which was initiated by the Provincial Estates in 1518. It lay just outside the walls of the old town founded by the Spanheim family. In the middle you will find the “Lindwurm“ (built around 1593), Klagenfurt’s heraldic animal, which commemorates the origins of the city as told in the legend of its foundation (German “Furt der Klage(n)“ or “ford of laments“). The fountain with its “monster“, statue of Hercules and Renaissance railing was completed in 1636. House no. 2: built with stones from the oldest city wall (13th century), it was the town’s main police station from 1808 onwards and has housed the Kärntner Reisebüro travel agency since 1949. House no. 3: built in the 17th century using parts of the oldest city wall which may have been incorporated into the building, it is linked to the Goëss house (point 8). House no. 4: built in the 17th century, beautiful arcaded courtyard. House no. 6: the Rainerhof, built in 1906. House no. 7: built in the 17th century, semi-circular portal with “the eye of God“ on the portal, arcaded courtyard. House no. 8: 17th-century core, arcaded courtyard. House no. 9: old pharmacy, 16th-century core, with stucco ceiling and beautifully carved wooden doors in the pharmacy. Admire the inner courtyard from Paradeisergasse. House no. 10: Longo house, built in the 16th century, the coat of arms of the Khevenhüller family is on the east wall, arcaded courtyard. Across the street, the house at Karfreitstrasse 1 is the “Viktringer Hof“, built in 1738 as the city residence of the Cistercian monastery in Viktring. Richly decorated with Corinthian pilasters. House no. 13: Porcia palace, a late-Baroque building from the 17th century which was rebuilt in 1970/71 making use of the original facade dating from 1774. House no. 14: Kärntner Sparkasse bank, 17thcentury core.
3 Maria Theresa monument The first monument to “Empress“ Maria Theresa to be erected in Austria was placed at the west end of Neuer Platz square in 1764. The original hard lead statue of artistic value was replaced by a bronze sculpture in 1873 and the monument was relocated to the east end of the square in 1972.
9: Landhaus (coat-of-arms hall)
Kramergasse pedestrian zone Dating from 1961, Austria’s first pedestrian zone is also the oldest street in Klagenfurt, along with Alter Platz square and Wiener Gasse. It forms part of the intersection of the east-west and north-south traffic routes and was where Duke Bernhard relocated the market town from the foot of Spitalberg hill in 1240. Houses no. 3 (arcaded courtyard), 6, 7, 8, 9, 9a (re-constructed Baroque facade) and 11 are built in Jugendstil and Viennese Secession style.

Metal sculpture by Heinz Goll, 1965. 6 Alter Platz pedestrian zone One of the two traffic routes on which Duke Bernhard founded the town, it is part of the east-west road which intersects the north-south axis at this point (see Wiener Gasse). Arcaded courtyards in houses no. 1, 4, 5, 16, 22, 24, 31 (see Goldene Gans), 33, 34, 35. Other buildings which are of great value in terms of the history of art and of the town are no. 1 (Old town hall – see point 23), 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 16, 22, 29 (staircase), 33. At the east end of the square there is a commemorative plaque for the Provincial Estates. House no. 19: built around 1600, seat of the Teutonic Order (1829–1862), Renaissance courtyard. House no. 21: former seat of the cathedral chapter with stucco facade from 1730, Renaissance arcaded courtyard (entrance at Renngasse 7). House no. 22: former seat of the high diocese of Bamberg (1614–1759), 19thcentury facade, Renaissance arcaded courtyard with facade from around 1650, passageway to Renngasse. House no. 24: “Blaue Kugel“, dating back to 1605 or earlier, it was first owned by Wolf Siegmund, Baron of Sigersdorf (1659), magnificent arcaded courtyard.

Trinity column Originally made of wood, erected on Heiligengeistplatz square in 1680 to commemorate the plague. After victory over the Turks (Vienna 1683) a half-moon and cross were added. In 1965 the monument was relocated to Alter Platz square.

Goëss palace Alter Platz 30, built between 1734 and 1738, facade with pilasters and coat of arms of the Goëss family. Steps with railing (1735) and stone balustrade (1739).
9 Landhaus building Commissioned by the Estates and built by Hans Freymann and Johann Anton Verda between 1574 & 1594, it replaced the town’s first castle (with moat). Coatof-arms hall with 665 coats of arms of the Carinthian Provincial Estates, provincial governors, members of the cathedral chapter and provincial administrators. Paintings by Fromiller († 1760): Emperor Maximilian presenting the deed of donation to the Estates (1518); the Estates swearing an oath of allegiance to Emperor Charles VI; investiture of the Duke of Carinthia on the Fürstenstein (Stone of the Princes). Frescoes by Suitbert Lobisser in the conference hall of the Provincial Diet. Remains of the old armoury can be found in the north wing. House no. 3: Maria Saaler Hof, built in the 14th century, Baroque facade, former salt and tobacco office. 10 Haus Zur Goldenen Gans Alter Platz 31, first mentioned in 1489, maybe the oldest building still standing in Klagenfurt. Planned as lodgings for the emperor who, in turn, left his castle to the Estates on the site of which the Landhaus was later built. The inner courtyard has a relief depicting a centaur with a female figure (probably 16th century) and beautiful arcades.
“Fruit“ square. The buildings here are early 20th century, no. 2 and no. 3 in old German style. Spanheim monument: statue of Duke Bernhard of Spanheim, founder of the town in around 1240. Stone pedestal depicting naturalistic lions by Josef Kassin († 1931). Leads to the newly reopened Eisengasse and Tabakgasse on the far side of Kramergasse. 18: Parish church with carillon. Can be viewed. Passageway Pfarrplatz 19 square – Alter Platz square Leading from Pfarrplatz 20 through a courtyard with arcades on three sides to Alter Platz 34. 16th-century core. This is where Protestants had to take the Catholic oath in 1604. From here you also have a fascinating view of the tower of the parish church.
20 Old town hall Formerly known as the Welzer palace, now the Rosenberg palace, it was built around 1600. Its notable features include the arcaded courtyard and the coat of arms of the Rosenberg family above the main entrance as well as Fromiller’s painting of Justitia, the goddess of justice, with the coat of arms of Klagenfurt and Carinthia.

13 Christallnigg palace Herrengasse 14, built around 1670, 17th-century arcaded courtyard. Interesting Empire-style decorations and tripartite portal. Municipal theatre
14 (Stadttheater)
Jugendstil building dating from 1908–1910 and replacing the 17thcentury ball rooms. Renovated and extended by architect Günter Domenig in 1998.
15 Stadthaus building Built in the 18th century on the old rampart of the Wölfnitz bastion which is now a park. The first outlet point of the Feuerbach stream was here, an irrigation canal which ran from the north, branching off from the River Glan, across the city moat and through the city. In 1830 the building was converted into a Biedermeierstyle mansion. One of its outstanding features is its Neoclassical triangular gable. Close by there is a faithful copy of the torso of a statue of an emperor (probably 16th century), said to represent the legendary founder of Klagenfurt, Emperor Claudius II (Claudiforum = Claudius’ market). 16 Municipal art gallery
(Stadtgalerie) Theatergasse 4, built by the town in the 18th century as an almshouse and orphanage and later used as an infirmary. It was renovated in 1996 and now houses a music school and the municipal art gallery. Passageway from Theatergasse to the Schubert park. Glaunach-Katzenstein building Pfarrhofgasse 2, originally the stately home of the Glaunach-Katzenstein family. The family’s coat of arms is above the semi-circular portal; the two-storey arcaded courtyard has paintings on the walls.

18 Pfarrplatz square Oldest municipal cemetery (used until 1776). House no. 2 dates from 1620. The town’s main parish church of St. Egyd was built on the site of a three-aisled basilica which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1690 (first mentioned in 1255 as the “Vrouwenkirche“). It was a curacy of the cathedral chapter of Maria Saal and originally had two towers. You can still see numerous tombstones (also from Protestant times) set in the outer walls. The buildings at Pfarrplatz 15 and 21 have impressive arcaded courtyards.
27 Burggasse 7 und 9 Burggasse 7: 16th-century arcaded courtyard, passageway between Burggasse/Renngasse. Burggasse 9: Jugendstil facade. 28 Burggasse 15 Former Ursenbeck palace, built in the early 17th century. Rustic portal with a broken pediment on the street front. There is another rustic portal on the north side of the inner courtyard where the keystone is decorated with a female bust. 29 Burggasse 8 The former castle was built as a “Collegium sapientiae et pietatis“ in 1586. Commissioned by the Estates, it was designed by Johann Anton Verda. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was the residence of the burgraves, hence it is still known as “the castle“. Courtyard with two-storey arcades and extended facades. Provincial art gallery 30 (Landesgalerie) On the 1st floor of the same building. The burgraves’ coat of arms is to the left of the entrance; just inside, the castle chapel dates from 1734.
12 Herrengasse House no. 3: beautiful inner courtyard. House no. 6: inner courtyard with the coat of arms of the former owners (counts of Inzaghi). House no. 12: Helldorf palace, built in the 17th century, 18th-century facade; owned by the counts of Helldorf since 1893; Napoleon Bonaparte stayed here in 1797.

21 Floriani monument In Heuplatz square, built in 1781 to commemorate the great fire of 1777. At the start of Heuplatz square, in Paul Hatheyer Schütt, one of the lions which used to “guard“ the city gate is set in the wall. 22 Bakers’ boy Legend of the interpretation of the name “Klagenfurt“: Because of an alleged theft, a baker’s boy was once executed. Later he turned out to be innocent. As a result and as a warning, the citizens decided to call the place Klagenfurt (Klagen = laments; Furt = ford).
31 Kardinalplatz square The square dates from the end of the 16th century with remains of the fortifications (Kardinal Schütt) still visible on its west side. Notable landmarks include houses no. 2, 3 (another lion from the old city gates), 4, 7, 8, the obelisk monument (built by Johann Nepomuk Probst in 1807 to commemorate the Peace of Bratislava, donated by Cardinal F. X. SalmReifferscheidt). 32 Kardinalplatz 1 19th-century core, extended later on, arcaded courtyard, passageway between Kardinalplatz/Fleischbankgasse. 33 Old city wall Remains of the wall, bastion and city moat (indicated with a turquoise line on the plan).
34 Diocesan museum Domplatz square; beautiful, comprehensive collection of sacred art from the Romanesque to Late Neoclassical period. Domplatz square with statue of Mary and cathedral The statue of Mary was erected to commemorate victory over the Turks (Vienna 1683). In the grounds of the former Jesuit college which later became the “Jesuit barracks“ (destroyed in air raids in 1944). The cathedral, Austria’s “earliest pilaster church“, was built by the Protestant Estates in 1581 and consecrated to the Holy Trinity in 1591. Klagenfurt’s first mayor, Christoph Windisch, acted as client but the name of the master builder is not known. In 1604 it was handed over to the Jesuits and since 1787 it has been the cathedral of the prince-bishopricof Gurk. The presbytery with its high altar was added in 1665 then in 1669 the stucco decorations were extended up to the high vault. Following the great fire of 1723, Kilian Pittner added stucco decorations to the vaults and walls in 1727. In the sacristy you can see the last work of Johann Martin Schmidt (also known as Kremser Schmidt).

22: Bakers’ boy
23 Wiener Gasse Intersects Alter Platz square as the continuation of Kramergasse at the heart of the earliest settlement. Together with Alter Platz square, Herrengasse, Renngasse, Kramergasse and Badgasse, Pfarrplatz square and Pfarrgasse, it forms the core of the town founded by the Spanheims. Impressive old buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries at no. 4 and 5. House no. 6: Hallegger house, built in the 15th century. The so-called House of the Lions was originally the city residence of the lords of Hallegg who were closely associated with the town in medieval times. House no. 7: 16th century, Late Gothic groined vaults, key stones with reliefs and ornamented medallions in the entrance, Late Gothic staircase. House no. 8: portal (1603), and arcaded courtyard. Ossiacher Hofbuilding 24 Commemorative plaque Wiener Gasse 10, built in 1627. In the mid-18th century it was bought by Ossiach monastery. Decorated facade from the first half of the 18th century. Supported by atlantes, the ledge is of an elaborate design. On the south side of the building there is a 17th-century arcaded courtyard.
25 Dr.-A.-Lemisch-Platz square Originally known as “Flour“ square, then “Fruit“ square and “FranzJoseph“ square before reverting to
36 Lidmanskygasse 8 The 17th-century “Goldener Brunnen“ house belonged to the Jesuit barracks located across the street on Domplatz square and housed a Jesuit seminary. Magnificent semi-circular portal with a plaque and a relief of the Jesuit order. St. Mary’s church 37 (Benedictine church) Commissioned by the Catholic Estates and built by Adam Kolnig († 1632) in 1613 as part of the Franciscan monastery. Due to extensive alterations over the years, the only original elements are the octagonal tower, the 17th-century stucco decorations, Fromiller’s painting of the crucifixion, tombstones and memorial stones, incl. those of the Baron of Herberstein and the Countess of Rosenberg, patron of the monastery. The church was handed over to the Benedictine order in 1807.
38 The stone fisher This statue, which stood in Heiligengeistplatz square for a long time, was probably erected in 1606 to symbolize the old fish-market regulations. Its inscription can be translated as follows: “I will not move from here, even if told, until all my fish and crayfish are sold“. 39 Benediktinerplatz 3 Slama gallery. Used to be called Herzogsplatz square as the land was reserved for a ducal castle. Late Baroque building with cable-pattern ornamentation and pilasters. Beautiful inner courtyard. Passageway to the inner courtyard of Pernhartgasse 3 – Wiesbadener Strasse.

40 Pernhartgasse 8 Designed by Franz Baumgartner, one of the founders of the Wörthersee style of architecture. Strongly structured facade decorated with frescoes. 41 Wiesbadener Straße House no. 3 (Bärenlaube): Renaissance building from the 17th century, semi-circular portal with lion, griffin and mask on the north side. The beautiful arcaded courtyard also serves as a passageway between Pernhartgasse and Wiesbadener Strasse. House no. 5 (Gurkerhaus): built in 1756 for the cathedral chapter of Gurk, it features a bipartite pilaster facade and the coat of arms of the cathedral chapter above its northern portal.

42 Church of Holy Ghost Incorporated in the north side of Heiligengeistplatz square, the church and its rather plain monastery (Ursuline order since 1678) underwent extensive alterations to the Gothic core in Baroque times. The six coats of arms carved in wood and the font (1623) are well worth seeing.
43 Stauderplatz 3 Built in 1826 and incorporating the remains of the Villach gate. Neoclassical elements with parts of the historical town wall included in the west facade.
