PRESENT AND PAST HABITS, REPEATED ACTIONS AND STATES (Hábitos presentes y pasados, acciones repetitivas y estados)

PRESENT HABITS, REPEATED ACTIONS AND STATES  We use the Present Simple to talk about present habits, repeated actions and states:

(Utilizamos el presente simple para hablar de los hábitos actuales, acciones repetidas y estados) 

I think I’m pretty healthy and I just eat what I like.

 We often use the Present Continuous with “always” to talk about present habits and repeated actions that annoy us or happen more than usual: (A menudo usamos el Presente Contínuo con "siempre" para hablar de los hábitos presentes y las acciones repetidas que nos molestan o suceden más de lo habitual)  My mom’s always complaining about my diet.  We can use “will + infinitive” to talk about repeated and typical behaviour in the present: (Podemos usar "will + infinitivo" para hablar sobre el comportamiento repetido y típico en el presente)  Most mornings I’ll have toast with a lot of peanut butter and jam.

We don’t usually use this verb form with state verbs for this meaning.  Compare these sentences:  Sometimes I’ll eat junk food. (repeated and typical behaviour) (A veces voy a comer comida chatarra. (Comportamiento repetido y típico))  Tonight I’ll probably have a pizza. (a future action) (Esta noche probablemente tendré una pizza. (Una acción futura)) TIP:  To show criticism, we stress the uncontracted form of will.  He will leave the door open all the time! (Dejará la puerta abierta todo el tiempo!)

PAST HABITS, REPEATED ACTIONS AND STATES

 We use the Past Simple and “used to + infinitive” to talk about past habits, repeated actions and states: (Usamos el pasado simple y "used to + infinitivo" para hablar de hábitos pasados, acciones repetidas y estados:)  I hardly ever did any exercise. (Yo casi nunca hice ningún ejercicio.)  I used to see him out running every morning. (Solía verlo salir corriendo cada mañana.)  We can use “would + infinitive” to talk about past habits and repeated actions: (Podemos usar "would + infinitivo" para hablar de hábitos pasados y acciones repetidas.)  And I’d get an ice cream or something on the way home from school every day. We don’t usually use this verb form with states verbs.  We make negative sentences with “used to” with: (Hacemos frases negativas con "solía" con) Subject + didn’t + use to + infinitive. (sujeto + didn’t + solía + infinitivo)

 I didn’t use to like vegetables. (No me solía gustar los vegetales)  We make questions with “used to” with: (Hacemos preguntas con "solía" con) (question word) did + subject + use to + infinitive. ((palabra de pregunta) did + sujeto + solías + infinitive.)  Where did you use to live? (¿Donde solías vivir?)

TIPS:  We can also make negative sentences with “never used to”: (También podemos hacer oraciones negativas con "nunca solía")  My brother never used to help with the washing-up.  We don’t use “used to + infinitive or would + infinitive” for something that only happened once: (No usamos "solía + infinitivo o would + infinitivo" para algo que sólo ocurrió una vez)  I gave up smoking in May. not I used to / would give up smoking in May. (Dejé de fumar en mayo. No solía / dejaría de fumar en mayo.)

 We often use “used to” when we begin describing past habits, then continue with “would + infinitive”: (Usamos a menudo "solía" cuando comenzamos a describir hábitos pasados, después continuamos con "would + infinitivo")  I used to sleep until 10 a.m., then I’d get up and have breakfast in the garden. After that I’d get the bus to work.
