FROM THE FLAG BRIDGE

Clay Parker Vice Commodore

June 2008 Jon Lander Commodore May has been a busy month at the Club and we are just getting started. There are boating events, Friday night dinners, special occasions, safety classes and work parties. Our clubhouse is a busy place. This month I particularly want to mention the work of the other Flag officers and Board members that keep this watch running. They faithfully attend board meetings and discuss and vote on the business of our club. And, they each fulfill specific duties that keep the records, pay the bills, organize events, and provide leadership for our club. Several Directors have additional duties as Staff Chairs. All are assisted by other Staff Chairs that share in the tasks of keeping things humming. In short, lots of folks pitching in make light work of many tasks. I thank all of you and salute you as members that make Camaraderie on the Water. This year we are fortunate to offer boating classes taught by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and our own Ken Graham. Do take advantage of these opportunities. The presenters are well prepared and share their experience that make each of us better prepared on the water. Ken’s classes will be monthly through September and sometime in the fall there will probably be another Coast Guard or Power Squadron event. I hear buzz of a 4th of July special event to include holiday activities at our Club and Dock. I call attention to it now as it will be happening by the publication of the July newsletter. Some of our best party planners are known to be scheming for a good time by all. Lastly, an update on some of the future improvement projects for the club: the deck plan has been submitted to the Flood District for hydraulic review because of our location in the flood plain. We should have a determination by the end of June. Also submitted was a proposal to add 5 feet to the west end of the building to provide more kitchen space. As soon as the additional kitchen space looks like it will make it through the hoops, the plans for the kitchen will proceed. The Board has discussed the dredge situation. Port Captain Bill Newton has reported that our dock area is in deeper water this year. The decision was made to postpone spending Club money on dredging at this time. The 2nd quarter General Membership meeting will be on Friday June 27th.

Larry Wolfe Rear Commodore With things getting back to normal after some difficulties post surgery, I am happy to report back for duty. Many thanks to Commodore Jon and Rear Commodore Larry for picking up where I “laid down on the job”. The Cinco de Mayo celebration was enjoyed by many of our members with accolades to all those contributing to the party! Starting with the “blessing of the fleet”, flag ceremony and going through a fantastic dinner there was something for everyone! Karen Agnew led a silent auction project for baskets prepared by other members and it was a stunning success. Our annual Senior Project through the Volunteer Center of Napa will make a lot of people happy come the Holiday Season. Thanks to everyone who purchased one or more of the baskets! Our participation in Celebrate the Napa River sponsored by Friends of the Napa River was much appreciated. We need to keep up our community involvement especially as we work on getting a new lease with the City of Napa. We do a lot for our community and should be proud to help in any way we can. Our next big event will be over the 4th of July weekend. The theme will be Dawgpatch Days with some really unusual games planned to test our knowledge and capabilities in a team environment. Prizes for best Pappy or Mammy Yokum costumes, great food and games to enjoy the river. Look for a flyer to list all the activities. It will be a cruise-in weekend, so plan to join in the fun. Our visiting club schedule has pretty well been set now by our great Port Captain, Bill Newton.. There are at least two visiting clubs every month through October, so you may get a call to lend a hand welcoming our visitors to our dock if we need some help. This is always a nice experience and you can meet other yacht club members. Our club looks great and we get many compliments to the results of our continued efforts to improve our building and grounds. Thanks to everyone helping fill the calendar to host Friday Night Dinners. With a few exceptions you have been most generous with your time and willingness to take part in what most members look forward to each week. I especially thank our newer members for getting involved. It couldn’t happen without each you! Have a fun and safe time on the water and join us at the club!

Opening Day on the Bay is officially the kick-off of the Bay Area boating season. Fleet Captain, Scott Brown started us off with a BANG! Joy and Bob Magoon on the “Betty D” were our leaders. Friday night Bob started us off with margaritas served from a borrowed “workbench” on the dock while Joy supervised the judging of appetizers that we all contributed. She had us taste, score and appreciate each one. Jon Landers was the winner. That evening we had a delicious dinner at the Oakland Yacht Club. Saturday, most went to the Boat Show, but the “Dancing Wolf” put in at Angel Island for a day of exploring. The “Wolf” then played taxi for all of the NVYC who needed a ride back to the marina. Saturday night Bob counted our scavenger hunt items and we ate at the Encinal Yacht Club. A great time was had by all. Safety Officer, Ken Graham, held his first class on May 14th on Boater Orientation. There were eight in attendance. June 17th will be a class on the Marlin Spike Seamanship. Sign up with Ken. The Paint Party was held on Saturday, May 17th. Because of the “heat wave” there were talks of canceling. But, Building and Grounds manager, Tom Nunan, can fix anything, even the weather, so we carried on. By 3:00 our clubhouse was gray with white trim and a blue roof. It looks absolutely GREAT! We stand out now when looking from the Maxwell Bridge. Thanks to the party painters: Charley Agnew, Scott Brown, Donald Buresh, Lynn Champlin, Phil Champlin, Tom Hildreth, Carol Landers, Jon Landers, Al Muller, Tom Nunan, Bob Parker, Bob Stemmer, Bob Stevenson, Linda Wolfe, Larry Wolfe. Judy Nunan organized our lunch. While the painting was going on, Bob Weeks was supervising Billy Backhoe who was digging the trench for our new gas line that will go to the new galley. PG&E laid the pipe Monday. Billy Backhoe filled it in on Tuesday and brought in crushed rock for the parking lot to create even more parking. And, wait until you see the new NAPA VALLEY YACHT CLUB sign. Bob Weeks made it (16 feet long) and Nancy Weeks painted it and put on the blue letters. Many thanks to everyone for everything that makes NVYC so great. Safe Boating,

Eulogy for Ria Donald-Johnson

Ria will be missed-a great woman There may be a few members who did not know Ria DonaldJohnson. Ria passed away a couple of months ago and we would be remiss if we did not recognize a few of her accomplishments. Ria , along with her husband George Donald, was one of the “Founding” members and also one of the “key participants in the birth of the Napa Valley Yacht Club. Ria was elected as our first treasurer and with her background as a CPA, was instrumental in keeping the club on track financially. Our club and the fellowship of boating became a focal point of her life. She held the position of treasurer many times over the years. She also served as Commodore for two years. When our yacht club cruised to other destinations we could count that upon our arrival we would be greeted by Ria with a smile and a cold Margarita to celebrate our safe arrival. Ria loved her boat, Magnificent Obsession, and down through the years, she became as adept at handling it as any of her male or female counterparts. Several years after her husband, George’s passing, Ria met Ron Johnson and they were married a little over a year ago. Ria will be truly missed by the Napa Valley Yacht Club and the yachting community.

Ken Graham Classes (note the date changes) As Safety Officer for the year 2008, your Rear Commodore and I have put together a group of workshops to help all of us have safe and fun days on the water. In addition I would welcome questions on safety or nautical subjects at any time. Just phone or Email me and I'll do my best to answer your concerns. Furthermore if anyone would like to see a subject covered in a workshop let me know and I'll see what I could put together, maybe even including it into one of the schedule below. In the weeks prior to each workshop, I will need sign-ups so I can be sure to have on hand enough handouts and materials for everyone to be able to participate. June 17, 2008 - Marlinspike Seamanship, a few basic knots and a splice for the adventurous. July 15, 2008 - Towing or Salvage, A very important (expensive) question when you have a mishap on the water. Aug 13, 2008 - De-mystification of Tides A rerun of my workshop from 2004 for those who didn't get enough. Sep 16, 2008 - De-mystification of Currents. Also a rerun of a 2004 effort.
