FROM THE FLAG BRIDGE

Clay Parker Vice Commodore

July 2008 Jon Lander Commodore Summer is here. With the unprecedented wild fires in June, we all may need to float our boats to some better air to breathe. As I sit here in the smog today, I wonder how far off shore might one have to go to find a fresh breeze. Carol and I will be leading a Cruise July 18-20 to Martinez. (The Commodore’s Cruise) There is a nice long guest dock for us so hope you are planning to attend. The Martinez YC is promising Friday night dinner and a Fashion/ Art Show on Saturday. The City Bocce Ball Courts are nearby and Martinez downtown is within a reasonable walk. Sign up for more details. Land cruisers can be accommodated too at Friday’s dinner but do help me provide our hosts with an accurate reservation. Security of our Building and property has been a topic of discussion at recent Board meetings. I have received a number of reports of windows or doors left open, particularly on Friday nights. It really boils down to each of us being responsible to re-lock our windows and doors and turn off the fans. If these fixtures are not secure, our club house is an open invitation for outsiders. We have an alarm system that alerts us to intruders and motion within the building but middle of the night alarms are not fun and we really want to reduce these “happenings”. Please help! Have you noticed that in the midst of many of our outstanding club weekend events you will find Karen Agnew? She is the Seniors Project Chair again this year and really does a bang up job keeping this Christmas time project in front of us all year. By raising funds throughout the year, we avoid some of that end of year panic about having enough funds to provide meaningful help to an ever growing group of folks that can use a gift at Christmas time. Karen is this month’s nominee for inspiring Camaraderie on the Water. She spends a lot of time and energy pulling off some great ideas that make life at the club more fun. Thank you Karen! We are having a great year and there is more ahead. Come join us at the club!

Larry Wolfe Rear Commodore Summer is here, already? Judging from the temperatures as this is written a reading of 110° is enough to seek shade or be on the water where it is always cooler, somehow. July is starting to be a busy month at our club with Dawgpatch Days scheduled for July 3rd and 4th as a cruise-in. From what I understand, the committee has a lot of fun activities planned, Dawgpatch food and some contests to test your skill and imagination should get everyone involved that wants to be .Many thanks to Karen Agnew, Linda Wolfe, Nancy Weeks and Mary Parker for planning this event. The guys that help are just there for the ride? There will be a lot of good food and imbibments, so sign up soon. See the flyer for details. We continue to host visiting clubs thanks to Port Captain Bill Newton. There are two per month through October with probably more to come. Also check your newsletter for the cruise-out schedule. It is fun to attend these even when coming by land. Save December 13th for the Change of Watch at Napa Valley Country Club. We will have more information later, but are working to make this a memorable event while keeping it as cost effective as possible. For newer members (or those with slippage in remembrance) Change of Watch is our annual suggested formal attire dinner/dance and ceremony where some current officers escape and new ones take the helm. Captain Ken Graham has a wonderful schedule of workshops on boating that everyone should try to attend. The next one is July 15th with more in August and September. For those wondering if the time is well spent, I can tell you that these workshops will be worth every minute whether you are an active boater or not! Contact Ken at [email protected] or 224-7015 to sign up. Have a safe and fun time on the water and join us at the club!

HOT SUMMER NIGHTS— We have had some break-ins at our club house. And, we can take some of the blame for not securing the building when we lock up. When leaving the windows and doors must be closed and locked. For added security, Tom Nunan has cut plastic dowels to be placed in the windows to insure they won’t open from the outside. Also, the fan that has set off the alarm will have an ON/OFF switch to insure it not tripping the alarm after lock up. COMMUNICATIONS— Where would we be without our newsletter keeping us informed? Many thanks to Philip Craig and Sally Servidio. Also, Carol Terry has sold $2200.00 worth of advertising in our newsletter. Thanks Carol. CLASSES— Our June 17th safety class on Marlin Spike & Seamanship by Ken Gramm was well attended by 21 NVYC members. It was a great learning experience and was a lot of fun too. Thank you, Ken and Nadine. The next class is on July 16th at 5:30 on Towing vs. Salvage. Let’s hope we never have to make that decision. DOG PATCH DAYS— Hopefully you will receive this newsletter before the 4th of July Party or Dog Patch Days. If you are coming to participate on a team, or to eat, or to drink or to just be merry, contact Karen at 2558115 or Linda at 253-9158 There will be Dog Patch shirts for sale for $12. And, gobs of ethnic American cuisine will be served at each meal. Saturday night’s dinner of baby buzzards (smoked Cornish game hens) will be free to NVYC members with reservations. COMMODORE’S CRUISE— Commodore Jon Lander’s cruise to Martinez is coming up on July 18 &19. Sign up on line with Scott Brown. Safe boating and look for the blue Sea Ray with the sails and oar locks. We’re doing our part in this fuel crisis.

Freya (Freyita) Hulmer July 3, 1948—June 2. 2008

Jimmy Ray, Freya, Drue, Talia

Freyita was a loving, devoted wife to Jimmy Ray, loving mother to Drue, new grandma to Talia (the sparkle of her life) and for me, the BEST FRIEND-&"SISTER" I ever had. She was genuinely sweet, warm, and funny. She loved to sing, dance, laugh, and sip champagne with her "Champagne Gals" aboard Kevin's electric boat.

In 2002 she was the Socials and Decorating Committee Chair for the NVYC. All that knew her loved her. She wishes everyone joy and happiness and that they "live life." She will be deeply missed. God Bless YOU little buddy! By: Roseanna (Rosi) Goodfellow

Ken Graham Classes (note the date changes) As Safety Officer for the year 2008, your Rear Commodore and I have put together a group of workshops to help all of us have safe and fun days on the water. In addition I would welcome questions on safety or nautical subjects at any time. Just phone or Email me and I'll do my best to answer your concerns. Furthermore if anyone would like to see a subject covered in a workshop let me know and I'll see what I could put together, maybe even including it into one of the schedule below. In the weeks prior to each workshop, I will need sign-ups so I can be sure to have on hand enough handouts and materials for everyone to be able to participate. June 17, 2008 - Marlinspike Seamanship, a few basic knots and a splice for the adventurous. July 15, 2008 - Towing or Salvage, A very important (expensive) question when you have a mishap on the water. Aug 13, 2008 - De-mystification of Tides A rerun of my workshop from 2004 for those who didn't get enough. Sep 16, 2008 - De-mystification of Currents. Also a rerun of a 2004 effort.
