Clay Parker Commodore NVYC July, 2009 Newsletter Commodore There have been some great things going on at our club this past month with cruiseouts, cruise-ins and work around the facility by our members. We are truly blessed to be where we are on the river and to have so many volunteers keeping our place in good order. The Commodore’s Cruise to Petaluma is just completed with 19 boats having participated. Smooth water and little wind in passage made for a memorable trip. I continue to be amazed by the knowledge, seamanship and caring for other boaters by our cruisers.. Vice Commodore Larry Wolfe had arranged a tour of the Petaluma Creamery, a small cheese factory, that was very impressive and a lot of
fun. On Sunday, June 14th, Tom Nunan arranged for over 40 guests of Napa Personnel Systems and the Life In Progress Club to be hosted by our club for a trip on the Napa River. Once again, our volunteer members made their boats available for an impressive experience for our guests. Bob & Nancy Weeks provided a lunch that was truly appreciated. Thank you Tom, Bob & Nancy along with our volunteer skippers. Lynn Pritchett made a special effort to get an article and photo in the Napa Valley Register that was published in the June 22nd edition. Last week more volunteers managed to repair the float problem at the East end of our dock. It would not support hardly any weight and sank as we loaded our guests earlier. Bob Stephenson, Bob Weeks, Vice Commodore Larry Wolfe and Rear Commodore Dirk Kruidenier made quick work of the repair.. A special thanks to them for taking the time to improve our dock! Our July 4th event is moving forward thanks to Karen & Charlie Agnew. You have re-
ceived the flyer and need to sign up immediately. No getting in the water or running this year, just skill and daring to take the GOLD. I will be a lot of fun and a chance to enjoy time at the club with your friends. Guests welcomed, but Karen needs to know how many are coming to order supplies. Please contact her immediately. It is also a cruise-in, so sign-up on the website if you plan to bring a boat. Kurt Stahr is the Cruise Captain. It is time to think about officers & directors for the coming year. Staff Commodore Jon Lander is leading the Nominating Committee, so let him know if you are willing to serve your club. We can’t know it unless you tell us. If you have someone you want to nominate, give Jon a call after you have gotten approval from the nominee. Formal notices will be coming to you in the near term, but be thinking of how you might contribute to the success of our club. Have a fun and safe time on the water and join us at the club! Clay Parker, Commodore
Thank you Charlie for a great trip to the Sacramento Jazz Festival and Delta Cruise. The weather was perfect until the day we left Village West. The wind howled and the waves were getting higher. Off of Port Chicago, Dancing Wolf and Lazy Days turned around and spent the night in Pittsburg. River Dancer went into Antioch. As the water got rougher, I did a mental safety check list and I will share it with you. SAFETY ON THE WATER When I was in the Navy (Linda says---when we had wooden submarines), we had drill after drill on fire, flooding, man-over-board, etc. Sometimes we had several a day and even some in the middle of the night. We could never be too ready or too safe. And, with each drill we became more efficient. How safe are you and your guests on your boat? How are your life jackets? What is their condition, location and number? What about your fire extinguishers, flashlights, flares? When was the last time you checked? Are they easy to get to in an emergency and fully charged? Remember before using your fire extinguishers, rap on the side to loosen the extinguishing powder. It may
have packed and caked from sitting overtime. Your flares should be current and in-date. Have you read and fully understand how to use them? An emergency is not the time to learn how to use them. MAN-OVER-BOARD. You should have a float to throw that’s easy to get to. Most of our GPS have MOB to mark the spot. Have you tried it? A routine drill could be to throw something in the water and see how long it takes to get back to your mark. When someone falls overboard, it’s not going to be on a clear, sunny day. It’s probably going to be in a current or strong winds and waves or at night. YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO SAFE. Thank you Tom Nunan for arranging the boat trip for 44 folks from Life in Progress and Napa Personnel Systems. Bob and Nancy Weeks put on a delicious lunch. I wish all of you could have been there to see the happy faces and feel the excitement. I was proud to be part of it. Commodore Clay and Commadorable Mary hosted a wonderful Commodore’s cruise to Petaluma. Thank you for a beautiful weekend. Petaluma is really a fun town. Mary’s Saturday night party
Wow! what a great Commodore's Cruise; Mary Parker did an outstanding job in setting up the party on Saturday evening--it was the event to attend in Petaluma that night. The Parker's boat was strategically placed right in the center of the fleet ---this move had to be attributed to whom Mary selected to drive the boat. Fortunately she selected
Clay so his attendance and the name of the cruise all came together. Elizabeth and Bill (co-bar captains) were on my boat; a captain must select his crew keeping in mind operational priorities. There were two other Yacht Clubs in the harbor with us, however, there presence was insignificant to the jovial celebration that was dominated by NVYC. As Larry and I rise thru the chairs it is indeed evident that Clay and Mary have raised the bar on the Commodore Cruise and we have our work cut out for us. We are approaching that time of year that the nomination committee is forming to select the future officers and directors of the company. In conjunction with this, the various positions have to be filed for the functional areas of the club in 2010. We have many members that have routinely filed many positions of the club that to some degree become our unsung heroes that add a great deal of support and strength to the clubs success. Many of these functional heads continue in their position year after year and we as club members owe them a great deal of appreciation---there names are always listed in the monthly news letter and if you have the opportunity, acknowledge your appreciation for their efforts. There will be some turnover in some areas; and if you

have an inclination to enjoy a rewarding experience, please notify your current officers or directors that you have an interest in a particular area. THERE IS ONE OTHER AREA THAT IS CHALLENGING THE SUCCESS OF THE CLUB; AND THAT IS THE RENEWAL OF THE LEASE. MOST OF OUR MEMBERSHIP ARE CITIZENS OF NAPA AND WE NEED TO APPLY SOME PRESSURE ACROSS THE BOARD TO GET THE CITY COUNSEL AND MANAGER TO MOVE ON EXTENDING NVYC'S LEASE. IF ANY OF OUR MEMBERSHIP HAVE CONTACTS OR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE POWERS TO BE OF THE CITY, IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO EMPLOY SOME MILD PRESSURE TO MAKE THEM AWARE THAT THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE TO YOU. We are now in the second half of the year and NVYC activities are winding down---all of us should should try to enjoy as many of the remaining activities as possible ---they are rewarding and enjoyable. dirk kruidenier 'the rear'

Commodore Cruise– Petaluma
By Lynn Pritchett, Special to the Register On June 14 members of the Napa Valley Yacht Club headed out on a lovely Sunday cruise and barbecue, hosting 40 clients of Napa Personnel Systems and the Life in Progress Club. LIP is a self-advocacy group for working adults who have developmental disabilities. The organization’s meetings provide an open forum to discuss life issues, invite guest speakers to give insight and information on various topics and provide exciting gatherings that promote cultural enrichment. Napa Personnel Systems is part of Napa Valley Support Services, which assists more than 250 developmentally disabled adults in Napa Valley by providing job placement and training, supporting an art gallery and other projects, including LIP. Members of LIP, their job coaches and 24 members of the Napa Valley Yacht Club, led by job coach and yacht club member Tom Nunan, participated in the cruise. Ten boats owned by yacht club members took the group on the Napa River. Afterwards, the guests were treated to grilled hamburgers with all the fixin’s and sides at the clubhouse on Riverside Drive. The appreciation of the attendees was apparent by their smiles and the warm thanks they expressed as the festivities came to an end. The Napa Valley Yacht Club, formed in 1987, encourages safety and courtesy on the water, promotes fellowship and fun through boating, encourages community involvement in river development and interacts with other yacht clubs. In addition to club dinners and social gatherings every Friday night, the club raises funds and raffles gift baskets to help provide food for seniors around the valley, offers free boat rides to veterans and others, sponsors cruise-outs to nearby yacht clubs and hosts cruise-ins from clubs around the bay. Club membership is open to membership of any person of good moral character with a sincere interest in boating. For more information, contact membership chair Evelyn Silveri at 255-1254.
