FROM THE FLAG BRIDGE

Jon Lander Vice Commodore

December 2007 Avi Strugo Commodore This is the time of year to say Thank You and I am honored and happy to thank a fantastic, dedicated and energetic team that has made this year one of our most successful years ever. Our Vice Commodore, Jon Lander, Our Rear Commodore, Clay Parker, our Treasurer, Ria Donald, our Secretary, Bob Weeks and our Board Of Directors, Scott Brown, LeRoy Moore, Bill Newton, Bill Coffield and Bob Craven helped me and our club have a year full of changes, experiences and significant strides towards accomplishing our goals. Some of my objectives this year have been the remodeling and expansion of our club house and finalizing our new log-term lease agreement with the City of Napa. As you know, our clubhouse is immensely nicer, bigger and more comfortable than it has been in years as we finished our phase 1 of our remodeling and expansion plan. We are closer than ever to agreeing on a fifty-plus-year lease with the city of Napa, (Their original lease proposal was for less than ten year…). We are working on Phase 2, the deck extension and on Phase 3, our new kitchen remodeling and expansion as well as on obtaining the long-term lease from the City of Napa. We accomplish more, thanks to the great team we have at the Napa Valley Yacht Club. Another example of our grand spirit is an awesome Crab Dinner we had last month. Bob Stephenson, Tom Nunan and Bob Weeks went to sea, caught incredible crab and hosted a magnificent dinner at no cost to the club. This spirit is the ultimate force behind our achievements this year. I am glad and honored that I have been in the position to guide and help accomplish our goals. We have experienced new horizons and cruised to Petaluma for our Commodore Cruise and to the Sacramento Yacht Club and the Jazz Festival at the beginning of our Delta Cruise in 2007. We had a fantastic participation, larger than ever, and all the participants enjoyed it so much that they mentioned that they would participate again next year. After all, we won second place prize for the group at the “Mardi Gras” parade at the Sacramento Yacht Club! Congratulations to our new officers and board: Commodore, Jon Lander; Vice Commodore, Clay Parker; Rear Commodore, Larry Wolfe; Treasurer, Jim Robbers; Secretary, Bob Weeks; Directors, Scott Brown, Bill Newton, Bill Coffield, Tom Nunan and Nancy Weeks. I know they will continue our efforts to finalize our new long-term lease with the city and in making our club-house better and more comfortable with a new custom kitchen and a new expansive deck. They are dedicated, passionate people who know how to get things done and I am proud to be a member of the club that would accept people like them as members… Our members voted for our new officers and board of directors for 2008 during our last General Meeting, and we will present them to our membership during our fabulous General Meeting and Change Of Watch on Saturday, December 15th at the Napa Valley Country Club. Here is to most enjoyable and wonderful cruising and to a great Holiday Season. Be Safe and Experience New Horizons.

Clay Parker Rear Commodore Flag officers find that the Yacht Club years pass quickly. It is rewarding to look back at the many successes of our year and humbling to look ahead at the new opportunities for the next year. All things accomplished come with the active support of many members. Willingness to host Friday night dinners and provide other service and skills as needed to keep our club active and engaged. For your active help in all roles, I am very thankful. Our Staff Chairs have been very active and supportive this year. Those reporting to the Vice Commodore have enhanced enjoyment for our members. Port Captain, Bill Newton welcomed over 100 boats from visiting yacht clubs to our docks. His timeless effort in handling the details and representing NVYC is much appreciated. Social Chair, Mary Parker provided lots of opportunity to party this year. Her attention to decorations, music, party themes, etc. provided lots of great opportunity for our group to gather and have fun. Bar Captain, Dirk Kruidenier, recruited an outstanding crew and provided the very important bar for all our clubhouse activities. OD Coordinator, Linda Sharp, stayed on top of the Friday night schedule so that regular dinner activities always were available. With everyone’s participation, Friday nights are a large cumulative event that is shared by a large number of members making lighter work for all. Our supplies team of the Craven’s and Moore’s were a terrific support group that kept the necessary plates, cups, paper-ware cleaning supplies available for all events. My thanks to all of you for jobs well done! I also appreciate the work of the other Flag Officers and Board. I am amazed at the wide variety of issues taken up at Board meetings and the successful resolutions of many thorny problems all for the continuance and betterment of our club. Thank you to Avi for steering us through the year and for each board members active participation. As we prepare for a new year, our club is strong and preparing for the future.

What a year this has been! As this is being written it is almost Thanksgiving, so a wonderful time to express thanks and gratitude to all those members who have made this a great year. You should all be proud of the things accomplished at our club with physical improvements, merchandise sales, special events, great newsletters, website upkeep, cruise-outs and ever increasing membership. Our visibility within the community has increased through some nice recognition by public and private entities. With a current membership of 106 we have the resources to really get things done in 2008. Thanks to each of you for contributing to our ongoing success! Even though I might call NVYC my second home, we should spend a little time recognizing those committees that stepped up to some challenges to keep our club the really neat place it is: Fleet Captain, Charlie Agnew, made our cruise-outs really great experiences. His cruise captains did a splendid job in arranging berthage and events to make them memorable. Newsletter Publishers, Sally Servidio and Philip Craig, went above and beyond in handling our news and advertising (revenue) so efficiently it is remarkable. Especially when one considers the large number of photos of events that were included. Thanks! Merchandise Manager, Angela Lewis with help from Art, kept our sales flying and a very nice choice of logo goods to choose from. They listen to the members wants and needs to make sure there is the “right” mix of things available and the members were looking to buy! Membership Manager, Evelyn Silveri has really kept our club records on track by processing applications, badges and burgees and all those “hidden” things needing to be done to make things run smoothly. She never missed giving the Directors a complete package to vote on. Evelyn is a (usually) quiet and unsung hero of our club and deserves a big Thank You from all of us! Public Relations Manager(s), Steve and Ellen Vartan, did a superb job in getting our club recognized in the broader community. Events such as Friends Of The River and hosting disabled veterans, in particular, were given good notice in the Napa Valley Register and even some radio publicity. Ellen’s graphic arts contribution through flyers and announcements really helped publicizing our club to the community. Website Manager, Scott Brown, and his resources with help from Sally and Philip kept the visibility of our club available to many other clubs as well as making it easy for our members to sign-up for cruises and get the most current news about NVYC. Building & Grounds Manger, Tom Nunan, can only be held up as a star of our club! His dedication is remarkable and his success unquestioned. All one needs to do is to look around at the expansion and improvements to the clubhouse to appreciate all the work and hours Tom has donated to make coming to NVYC a pleasure to members, guests and visiting Yacht clubs. Many, many members pitched in to help with the club improvements, but some deserve special thanks. Bill Newton, Bob Weeks, Bob Stephenson, Jim Robbers and Gary Schager, in particular, were always on hand to lend their experience and knowledge of our then rickety clubhouse to make things work in spite of the challenges. Jim & Dana Robbers along with Pat Casperson have done a remarkable job in designing a new kitchen to be improved in the near term. At the risk of forgetting others, I will just say thanks to all who helped with building, painting and those many things we had to do during the year. You know who you are and you are appreciated. As my year as Rear Commodore comes to an end, I am looking forward to next year as Vice Commodore and getting to work with the committees to keep the club energized and a fun place to be. Happy Holidays and Safe Boating to all!

A report from

Alan and Kristen Spence

It has now been 6 weeks since we left San Francisco Bay for Mexico. And we are settled into a slip at Marina De La Paz for the next 4 weeks before we leave for mainland Mexico. On October 14, we left South Beach Harbor with over a dozen well-wishers waving from the dock and even an escort to the Golden Gate Bridge by the Browns on Lady Di and the Stahrs on Starship. We went only to Half Moon Bay the first day and from there to Monterey the second. We then decided to wait for the seas to calm some before we headed further south. It ended up being a week before we left Monterey; several other boats had made similar weather calls and left about the same time. From Monterey, we made our first overnight passage. We rounded Point Conception at about 8am with very little wind and calm seas. We had the sails up for a portion of this passage, but needed the motor as well, in order to make reasonable progress. We opted to go into Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard to wait and see what was going to happen with the Santa Ana winds that had been causing much distress in Southern California. As it turned out, our timing was perfect. We arrived the day after the last of this wind, however the smoke was still very thick and the harbors will filled with “refugees” from Catalina. We weren’t able to get a yacht club slip in Oxnard, but the City had a spot for us on the transient dock. From Oxnard, we decided to head out to Catalina Island for a day or two, on our way to San Diego where we would be joining the Baja Ha Ha crowd. 45 minutes out of the harbor, we were approached by a “go fast” navy boat that asked us to hold our position until they were done with their live ammo missile practice, which

would take an hour or two. By the time this was over, we had missed our window to reach Catalina in the daylight, so we redirected to Marina Del Rey. Again there were no yacht club spots for us, but the County had a spot that worked our very nicely. There were actually two West Marines within walking distance of this part of the marina. We visited both. Dana Point was the next logical stop from here and we were finally able to secure a free yacht club reciprocal slip. I think it was the same slip that Lady Di got last year. The smoke was so thick here that Kristen coughed for the next week. The soot was thick on our boat and every other one in the marina. We caught up with our friends that we’d met in Half Moon Bay and spent the week with in Monterey, Buddy and Kathy on their Nordhaven 55, “Always Friday”. This was our last chance to get together, before we parted ways. They’re headed through the Panama Canal and home to Virginia. From Dana Point, we made our last hop to San Diego. In all of Southern California, we had no wind at all, so lots of motoring. It was Friday and the Ha Ha was scheduled to leave on the following Monday, the 29th. There was “no room in the inn” so we were relegated to an anchorage on the other side of the Coronado Bridge. This actually wasn’t bad, as we had the opportunity to spend some time on Coronado Island (actually it is a peninsula). Since we were going back and forth across the bay to participate in the various Ha Ha activities, we rented a car. This also made it easier to pick up our Ha Ha crew from the airport. We were joined on Saturday by Kristen’s nephew Carl and his wife Tia.

On Monday the Ha Ha rally started at 11am just outside the channel into San Diego Bay. It looked like there would be no wind at all, but at 5 minutes to 11, a nice breeze came up and we all turned off our motors. Just to make things a bit more thrilling, an aircraft carrier picked that time to do some practice maneuvers right in the middle of our fleet of 162 sailboats (and one power boat). We ended up sailing just a little less than half of the way to Cabo San Lucas over the course of the next 12 days. We stopped in Turtle Bay for a couple of days, then Bahia Santa Maria for a couple of days. These anchorages were both quite interesting with over 150 boats anchored together. Fortunately both bays were large enough and the weather pleasant enough. We actually arrived at midnight at the 2nd anchorage and had to enter the bay and anchor in the dark. I don’t think I want to do this too many more times, especially with no moon. On Saturday the 10th of November, we bid farewell to our crew and finished up the last of the Ha Ha events. On Sunday we left Cabo and spent the next two nights at anchorages in Los Frailes and Los Muertos, then on to La Paz. We got a slip in Marina De La Paz for two nights then headed north up into the Sea of Cortez for a week and a half. We had been looking forward to spending time anchored at various coves around the southern and mid portions of the Sea. The weather was quite warm and the water clear and warm. We didn’t get to sail very much, but did when we could. We enjoyed snorkeling wherever we went and thoroughly enjoyed the incredibly beautiful rugged scenery. Several of our anchorages turned rolly after we went to bed, which made for a couple of long nights (three to be exact), but we continue to learn as we go. We made it as far north as Puerto Escondido, where is an active community of cruisers and other gringos living in the area that participate in the morning net on the VHF radio and have a small yacht club. We spent two nights here on a mooring ball and had the opportunity to go into Loreto for breakfast, touring and shopping before we left. We also learned to play beach bocce ball and made acquaintance with one of Marilee Newton’s coworkers (Diane Brown on Footloose). We actually went a little further north the next night and anchored at Isla Carmen, but then proceeded back towards La Paz from there.

Thanksgiving found us in Bahia San Evaristo, a small but protected cove. We had spent the prior two nights in anchorages by ourselves and thought that everyone else had gone somewhere for Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving, we found ourselves with 4 other boats in the anchorage. I swam around and talked to a couple of the boats. One was from France, so they were not celebrating Thanksgiving. The second one knew Scott and Diane from anchoring together in Ipala last year and also Charlie and Grania Lindberg. We had ham and potatoes for our own thanksgiving celebration. Kristen needed a break from fish, which has been our staple. A delegation came over from one of the other boats looking to trade beer for eggs. They were short this crucial ingredient for their pumpkin pie. We were able to accommodate them. All along the way, we have caught fish, as we have been dragging two lines behind the boat almost everywhere we go. We’ve caught innumerable Bonita and Skipjacks, 5 Dorado, 4 Yellowtail Jack, 1 Yellow fin Tuna, 1 Sierra Mackerel and a couple that I haven’t been able to identify. Along with the shrimp we bought from a fisherman and what we brought in the freezer, we’ve been eating a lot of fish. We are now in La Paz and will be here through Christmas. We’re starting to figure out the bus system and managed grocery shopping via the bus yesterday. I think Kristen is ready to try this herself next time; she doesn’t seem to think that I’m a lot of fun to shop with (I like to get in and out, accomplishing the mission in as little time as possible). Kristen likes the laundry system where you drop it off and a woman washes dries and folds for 45 pesos per load and its right here at the marina. Both of our kids are planning to visit in December, which will be nice. After Christmas, we will be heading to the mainland. We’re hoping to spend January cruising the “Mexican Riviera” and February in Puerto Vallarta, though this is not entirely squared away at this writing, despite my confirmed reservation last February. I’ve been trying to keep our travel log up to date on the web at www.svcharisma.talkspot.com also, please feel free to drop a line at [email protected] ([email protected] when we’re traveling). Attention Last year we delivered and funded 60 gift certificates to needy seniors with the help of The Volunteer Center of Napa. This year with the generosity of our club members, we are giving 76 seniors a $100 certificate to an appropriate grocery store. This biggest fund raiser we had was May 5th when we had the silent auction. So, when the Xmas gifts, etc., come in, remember to save the unwanted poundage items, or whatever, will be greatly appreciated to produce some more wonderful baskets. This will be before Mother's Day and an excellent time to please Mom and support the Senior Xmas Program. Thanks to all and have a wonderful holiday. Karen Agnew
