FROM THE FLAG BRIDGE
Clay Parker Vice Commodore
December 2008 Jon Lander Commodore 2008 is coming to a close and my year as Commodore is almost over. Previous Commodores had passed on that the year one serves as Commodore flies by. How true that has proved to be. It has been an eventful year with many memories to look back on. There are some things I wish had been competed, but on all fronts we made lots of progress. Most significant has been the attainment of the new deck permit. There seemed to be a lot of bureaucratic hurdles for a while, but persistence pays. And it helps to have a Bob Weeks to make things right with the City. The Board will take up the matter of the budget for this project at the December Board meeting. The Lease agreement with the City is an “almost” done deal. It has been delivered to the City as mentioned last month. We are now awaiting the official response and hopefully a trip to the City Council for ratification. This would provide for a 30 year lease with 2 additional 10 year periods; some long awaited stability in our long term plan. “Camaraderie” has been a good theme for the year. I sense an increased fellowship of old and new members. There have been numerous social events, work parties and cruises and a lot of folks having a good time. That is what the yacht club experience is all about. We learn safety and practical knowledge in the use of our boats and we have a great time in and about the water. Hopefully, camaraderie will continue to be a focus of our club. It is very important to make new members feel welcome and included. It is vital to have a positive spirit in our club. We are all volunteers and positive reinforcement keeps things running. It has been shown that keeping a positive outlook is a powerful force in carrying out the tasks that make a club. It is also more enjoyable for everyone and enhances a “can do” spirit that helps us make progress on larger projects such as building improvements and lease agreements. Turning to the new year, my hope is that all will continue the momentum that is with us and will offer support to the new flag officers and Board. And I add a special welcome to Dirk Kruidenier as Rear Commodore and Lynn Pritchett as a new board member. A reminder that Dues are payable the 1st of the year and must be received by the end of January. The cost has remained the same this year. As I thought about whom else should I highlight as a grand example of our camaraderie, lots of names came to mind. But really it is YOU that have made my experience this year quite enjoyable. Whether it was a friendly greeting, voice of support, helpful hands or doing a particular job, all have been beneficial to my NVYC experience. I am grateful for all your friendships and support. May you too find camaraderie on the water! Jon Lander, Commodore
Larry Wolfe Rear Commodore As we begin to wrap up 2008 and get ready for the coming year, there is, as usual, a lot going on at our club! The next big event is the lighted boat parade on December 6th. Everyone is encouraged to take part in this special display that the community of Napa looks forward to seeing. Several neighborhoods plan special gatherings to see the parade go by River Park and the Napa Yacht Club developments, so the more boats the better. After the parade everyone is encouraged to gather at the club to enjoy a chili dinner sponsored by Rear Commodore Larry & Linda Wolfe. Even if you have something planned come down to see the judges selections for the best of the categories. Just let Mary Parker, 224-0188, know the number in your party so there will be enough food to go around. Pray for good weather….. After the Lighted Boat Parade our attention turns to our Annual Membership Meeting and Change of Watch at the Napa Valley Country Club on December 13th. This is our time to change the leadership of our club and to get sort of snazzy for the Holiday Season. You have all received a flyer by e-mail and regular mail and we are hoping to have you there! Black tie optional with all the ladies looking super as they always do! Sign-up and payment deadline is December 6th, so we can arrange the right number and kinds of meals plus getting everyone seated at specific tables. Make checks to the Napa Valley Yacht Club for $95.00 per person and deliver or mail to Mary Parker, 780 Kearney Way, Napa, CA 94559. Don’t miss this great party! Guests are welcomed. Karen Agnew is still working to have our Senior Project be as successful as ever. The wonderful ladies of our club are getting together on December 8th at 9:30 at the club to put together packets to deliver to mostly homebound Seniors that really look forward to getting them. Karen can still use some items and, of course, a cash donation will help the project grow. Call her at 255-8115 to see how you can help. This has been a wonderful year with so very many volunteers making things happen at our club and for our community. You are all to be blessed beyond words! Have a safe and fun time on the water and join us at the club! Clay Parker, Vice Commodore
What a fast year 2008 has been. At my time in life, the years seem to go faster each year. Before 2008 ends, I would like to reflect on what a great year it has been. I’ll give you a clue. You will find the answer in your little blue NVYC Membership Directory where the friendliest, most dedicated volunteers anywhere are listed. Thanks for a great year-----Happy Holidays, Larry Wolfe, Rear Commodore
Senior Program I can hardly believe it is time to activate the Senior Program. Where the heck did the year go. As you have heard, via Clay, this year we are going to include soaps, shampoos, etc. that we have all collected over the year. Our recipients wait for us each year, and they talk among themselves, so we have to be careful to do the same for all. I have a donation of small gift bags this year, so we will be putting items in them. We will be making about 75 bags so if anyone has any items they would like to include, please make sure you have at least 75 of the same/like things. I had thought of including sparkling cider in each bag, but realized it would take over 6 cases to have enough. If I have a little extra left from the donated cash, I will still do this. And of course there are the small stuffed bears [and beany babies], thanx to Kathy Nord and Jackie Finnegan. We have a few seniors who look to see what the animal is before checking the rest. We will meet on Monday, December 8th, at the Yacht Club at 9:30. As some of you know, I have heard from Vallegra's that over $1700 dollars of past gift certificates have not been redeemed. To make sure we have a tracking record, so we can help those who have not redeemed their gift, we will have to take extra time to post a gift number with a name, so allow a little extra time for Monday morning. Please let we know if you can make Monday to construct bags and deliver, or if you will only be able to make deliveries. All who participate in this program come away with a wonderful feeling. It is all of you members whom have made this such a big success. Joyce Craven & Jim Robbers have called me to say they are getting free Xmas cards in the mail, and can I use them? YES bring extra Xmas cards, and we will included them in the gift bags. Any ideas, just Remember we need at least 75 of each item, so all bags are the same Thanks in advance for your help and contributions. Be sure to make the check out to the Volunteer Center of Napa. Karen Agnew, Senior Christmas Program
