FROM THE FLAG BRIDGE

Clay Parker Commodore So much to report and so little room to write! Our members have to be the most generous folks in the world. Certainly financially supporting our programs such as the Seniors, Sea Scouts and others. But, maybe even more generous with their time and talents to make our club a better place for ourselves and the community. The new deck is almost complete. The glass panels are in and a few touchups remain, but the heavy work is done! Those that worked so hard to get it done cannot be thanked enough even though I know we all appreciate their many hours of contribution.. A list too long to name them all, but they know who they are and their results are outstanding for us all to enjoy! The project came in for less than budgeted and took far

less time than many expected. The next project is to get new permanent electrical capacity to the dock. That should be done in the near term and will prevent the “brown-outs” boaters from near and far have experienced in the past. Your Board of Directors has allocated funds to get it done! With the gas line installed last year, we can now have natural gas in the kitchen or wherever we need it. Your Board of Directors has allocated funds to purchase a new range to use while taking a breath before starting other major improvements. Now our members should be able to cook at the club instead of transporting things from outside if they want. This can be a major advantage for many. There is also some thinking about the possibility of a BBQ unit for the deck to not have to use the old one, I call Mt. Etna, on Bring Your Own Meat nights. Just thinking at this point…..so don’t get nervous….yet. The parking lot needs a bunch of work to make it so we don’t have to slog through mud getting to the clubhouse. Bids are being obtained to make improvements there in the near term. Almost makes one tired just thinking of all the good things underway.

March 2009

We will also try to get Riverside Drive fixed up so we can even get to the clubhouse without trying to avoid those huge holes. Membership is building with the addition for four new one this just this past month. With some attrition our total membership is currently about the same as last year. I really encourage you to bring potential members to let them look us over and learn about the many, many things we do, including the fun stuff that make our club “the place to be” with or without owning a boat! Go out of your way to meet our new members. They are all nice folks and we should work hard to make them comfortable. There are still a few hosting opportunities for Friday Night dinners, so get signed up as soon as possible. Don’t be reluctant as it is pretty simple to use your own menu creativity to host your fellow members for a nice night out. Lori & Chris Fultz along with Nancy & Allan Mueller will be calling to fill the schedule. Please say yes! Have a fun and safe time on the water and join us at the club! Clay Parker, Commodore

Larry Wolfe Vice Commodore We have a very ACTIVE club! Our first big event was the Super Bowl party held at the clubhouse on Super Bowl Sunday (when else?). In addition to watching the game on Commodore Clay Parker’s big screen TV and betting on the pool, there was a smaller game of Mahjongg and a BIG chili cook-off. The winners of the day from Dirk Kruidenier’s pool were Clay Parker, Bruce Butler, and Bill

Kisliuk. All of the chili pots were delicious and different. Linda Wolfe won the cook-off. Thanks to Nancy and Mark Lesser and Clyde and Kathleen Smith for all of their work in making the day enjoyable for all. Our Friday Night dinners have been outstanding. The Valentine’s party was special with Lucina Tisson entertaining us with song and wit. Again thanks to Mark & Nancy. I’m sure Tom Nunan enjoyed his part of the entertainment. The next day the Coast Guard Auxiliary gave our boats a safety check. All boats passed with flying colors. Thanks Kurt Stahr. And, a very special thank you to all who helped build our wonderful new deck----the designers, the red tape cutters, those who got the bids, the deck layers, the railing installers, the glass installers, the painters and the paint splatter cleaner-uppers. We’ve enjoyed it already. Vallejo Yacht Club will be cruising in on March 21 and 22. Clyde and Kathleen will have dinner for them on Saturday night and the Parkers will serve breakfast the next day. If you are going to decorate your boat for Opening Day on the Bay, April 24 to 26, the theme is

The deck is finally complete and just in time for the 'rainy' season; presently it is best enjoyed wearing foul weather gear. We as members owe a great deal of gratitude to the efforts of a few, that made the whole project come together. In the future if there are others that would like to help on projects around the club; please let your names be known to either Bob SteDirk Kruidenier phenson or Bill Newton. The Rear Commodore issues of finalizing the lease are getting close to completion thru the relentless efforts of Clay Parker, Jon Lander, Avi Strugo, Steve Vartan, and Larry Wolfe. If there are any members that have a special relationship with any one of the Napa City counsel, please contact one of the members above to see if you may be of assistance. We are on the cusp of getting into Spring like

“Legends of the Sea”. Mark your calendars-----Our Change of Watch is going to be November 21, Saturday night at the Napa Valley Country Club. Put on your dancing shoes as there will be live music. Bob Weeks has ordered the new gas range to be delivered February 23. This will make Friday night dinners much easier to prepare. Membership in the Napa Valley Yacht Club is special. Many of our treasured friendships are a result of our membership in this club. At our last board meeting, four new members were brought in. Think of the person that sponsored you, thank them and then think to whom you might also want to extend an invitation. So, if you are feeling tired of the cold and the rain and need some warmth and fun, come to your club. I know you will enjoy yourself and we will have more fun if you are with us. Hope to see you soon. Safe Boating, P.S. I am really getting the hang of the Vice Commodore vocabulary. Ahoy---can we borrow— Prop---helps with skits given by yacht clubs ,Head---that appendage that’s used to stow brains before buying a boat.

weather, so everyone is invited to contact Angela & Art Lewis to start getting their NVYC summer wardrobe in order. We are always looking for new members and with the completion of the new deck and warmer weather it will be a great time to introduce prospective members to the wonderful dynamics of the club and it's membership. If you need membership applications, please contact Evelyn Silveri; you will find her very helpful in completing the process. Do not forget that the St. Patrick's day cruise is coming up on March 13th so if you are interested please contact Kurt Stahr. Remember that is Friday the 13th, which would be a good time to be on the water rather then in your car or a more dangerous environment such as 'home'. March is an exciting month as we begin to pull out of the winter weather, i.e. daylight savings begins on the 8th, St. Patrick's Day on the 17th,, Spring begins on the 20th, and for you history buffs the celebration of The 'Ides of March' on the 15th. "See you all at the club"

An update from Alan & Kristen Spence, February 25, 2009 February 25, 2009 Whangarei, New Zealand We have now been back in New Zealand for a month, after our brief interlude at home for the Christmas season. As planned, we have spent most of the last month working on the boat, including a two week haul out. It has been a pretty expensive month, but with the exchange rate being quite good (for us) and New Zealand’s lower labor rates (about 1/3-1/2 of the US rates), every thing we’ve done has been quite a bit less expensive than if we’d done it in the States. We did all of our own sanding, fiberglass repair and painting in the yard, including removing our old blue boot stripe and painting a new orange stripe, closer to the original one that had been painted over. We hired Palmer Canvas to sew the side and rear curtains for our cockpit enclosure, this has taken longer than planned, but is 99% complete (we’ll be much more comfortable on night passages and in the rain). We ordered a new suit of sails from Calibre Sails. I was able to visit the sail loft while they were being put together, which was quite interesting. We splashed the boat back in the water on Monday and are now working on the steering and sail furling mechanisms. I’ve had some machining done to the steering wheel shaft and now they are improving the connection of the autopilot to the steering, which had some play in it. The list of other things we’re working on is long and not that interesting. Unfortunately I had a setting messed up on the camera and didn’t get any good pictures of our work during the haul out. Also, the pictures we took of the boat “Earthrace”, who visited Whangarei last week, didn’t come out. I may track down someone else’s Earthrace photo, it is a very unique boat. From their website http://www.earthrace.net/ : “In June 2008, the amazing Earthrace vessel set a new world record for a powerboat to circle the globe, and she did this with 100% renewable biodiesel fuel, and a net zero carbon footprint. The voyage was over 24,000 nautical miles, and took 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes, smashing the old record by over two weeks.” We were able to take a few days off to explore some of New Zealand’s Northland. We visited the Kauri Museum with Jaime and Christine of Morning Light. Then with Mike and Cindy of Airwego, we visited the Whatangi Treaty Grounds (on Whatangi Day – we saw the Prime Minister twice!), the town of Russell, 90 Mile Beach and Cape Reinga Lighthouse. I’ve posted photos on Picassa. “Charisma” Full Sail on passage to Nuku'alofa “Charisma” Sailing to the Ha'apai Group from Vava'u

We have been driving a borrowed car (from Rick and Terry of Morning Star) for the last month, which we will give up the middle of next week. It has been an interesting experience driving on the wrong side of the street (interesting for me, terrifying for Kristen). New Zealand also has a couple of bizarre right-of-way quirks and then there are the “round-a-bouts”. I have felt amazingly comfortable driving here, until I screw up. I haven’t hit or broken anything yet. New Zealand actually requires a WOF (Warranty of Fitness) every 6 months. We had to get our borrowed car “WOF’ed” last week and the registration renewed. Fortunately it passed with flying colors. We are working on getting done with the critical boat projects so that we can cruise further south to the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland area. In Auckland, we will meet our friends Phill and Melody Blake from Napa and do some land travel to see more of the sights. Of interest to some of you, we have been considering extending our Pacific Adventure for a 3rd year! As we have been planning out the next legs of our itinerary, we have discovered that we won’t be able to visit some of the highlights we had planned on, like Fiji and Vanuatu, if we come home this year. This is still in the planning and discussion stage, but we have at least opened for consideration the idea of spending another year in the South Pacific before returning home. One note of sadness, our former cat Ricky (we gave Ricky and Lucy both to my parents before we left home) died this week of a bladder infection with complications. Boo Boo continues to thrive though, in his new home with Ellen and Keith Cooper and his new little brother Teddy in Menlo Park
