FROM THE FLAG BRIDGE

Clay Parker Vice Commodore

May 2008 Jon Lander Commodore I have had the opportunity to greet visiting Yacht Clubs from Corinthian and Petaluma on cruise-ins to our club in April. All have commented on the improvements to our club house in the past year. Thanks again to all those who have assisted! Visiting clubs are fun because they bring new perspective to things we often take for granted and being fellow boaters, they are great people. As our downtown reforms as an improved tourist destination, the popularity of cruising to Napa increases. Bill Newton, Port Captain, is having a busy year fielding inquiries about cruiseins. Nancy Weeks is providing great leadership in providing meals for our visitors in her role as Galley Captain. She is recognized this month as one that supports “Camaraderie on the Water”. Since the number of events is increasing, I am sure Nancy would be grateful for assistance. Give her a call and volunteer for one of the cruise-in events. It is a great way to meet new folks and I observe that Nancy and crew have a good time too. Don Buresh and Sharon Phillips can also use “helpers” as we open the bar for our guests also. Many hands make light work! The City of Napa announced this week that the new 4th street dock will be in place next year. It will be twice as long as the old dock. They are holding off the installation because of the construction currently underway adjacent to the dock landing. There will be an opening though the new building to reach the dock from Main Street. There is talk of a new dock on the south side of the Hatt Building. I haven’t seen any permits as yet but know that some of the infrastructure was built with the recent flood project work. This month includes our Cinco de Mayo weekend and blessing of the fleet, and the annual Delta Cruise so there are lots of opportunities for boaters on the water. Hope you will join us!

Larry Wolfe Rear Commodore

This will be short this month due to needing some time for getting mobile again, but here goes. The articles from our Commodore and Rear Commodore cover most of the news and issues for this month’s publication, so I won’t belabor jobs already well done. My thanks to them for stepping in at this time to make sure our bases are covered. One issue does remain and I guess the only way to proceed is to modify our current Friday Dinner schedule(s) as things change. Although many, if not most, of us have volunteered to host a Friday night Dinner there are some who, for whatever reason, are not taking the opportunity. A number of our members have hosted more than once already this year and should not be expected to keep filling gaps in the schedule. Last month there was a suggestion in our newsletter to let us know how you would like to see things changed for the better, but frankly there was no response. It’s tough to make our club work the way members want if we don’t get your input and support for our programs. Our O.D. Coordinator, Linda Sharp, has really worked hard to fill the calendar with hosts and I certainly thank her for all she has done. The fact is, though, in my opinion if there remains openings in the hosting calendar we simple cannot expect to have dinners on any night there is not a volunteer to manage the event. “Potluck” or “Appetizer” nights are usually not well attended even though they were originally started to cover gaps in the schedule and can really offer some great meal items. We will certainly continue with those on the calendar with hosts. In order to serve the needs of our members we really need your ideas of how to make our club that one organization you belong to that will bring you back again and again. Changing dinner nights, dinner formats (a “Taco Tuesday’, for instance) or other improvements may make a difference in how you value your club experience, but we need to know your desires before we can make improvements. Call Mary Parker at 224-0188 of email us at [email protected] with any ideas you have. Please get yourselves signed up to host a Friday Night Dinner by contacting our O.D. Coordinator, Linda Sharp. Her i n f or m a t i o n is: [email protected] or 226-7488. Have a fun and safe time on the water and join us at the club! Clay Parker

Fifteen brave Napa Valley Yacht Club members were enrolled in the Mt. Diablo Power Squadron’s GPS class on April 16th. The class, taught by Instructor Bill Hart, had so much essential and technical information that it put all of us on overload and melt down by the end of the evening. After receiving a Certificate of Completion, one of our members said that he was going to hide his Certificate for fear someone might ask him a GPS question. The Petaluma Yacht Club cruise-in had a special treat when Bob and Nancy Weeks and Judy an Tom Nunan cooked BBQ tri-tip for their Sat. night dinner. Tom was also there as the official electrician to work on the tripped power on the dock; which leads to the next subject. Many thanks to Bob Magoon, Bill Newton and Bob Weeks for reviewing the electric power for our 150’ dock. Ideas were discussed, and recommendations were made. And, as we go to press, Bob Weeks has worked with PG&E to start installing the gas line, around the 1st of May. Our Friday night dinner on the 18th was hosted by Karen & Charlie Agnew and Diane and Scott Brown. There was a wonderful wine tasting of Lucchesi Wines put on by Kristen Vartan. She is the winemaker at Lucchesi and the daughter of our own Steve and Ellen Vartan. After delicious appetizers we had an Italian meal of Lasagna with all the trimmings. It was again a full house. Ralph Price and his wife Phyllis were guests and brought boating goody bags for all. Ralph is the District Commander for the U.S. Power Squadrons. We will have a guest speaker after our May 16th dinner. James Martin, the author of The Islands of San Francisco Bay, will present a slide show of his photos of the islands in our bay. May 17th is PAINT DAY at the Club House. Bring your old clothes as we will be painting the outside of the Club House. We will start our paint party at 10:00 on Saturday. With your help and lots of participation, we will finish early. Happy and Safe Boating,

Bring Your Boat!

In our last report we left you headed on your way to Sacramento for the Jazz Festival and party at the Sac Yacht Club. After you get docked and get yourself acclimated to the facilities, it’s time to nail down your plans for your time here. There will a NVYC dinner at the de l’Etoile’s either Thursday or Friday night, and you will be shuttled back and forth to the de l’Etoile’s by Phil and Nancy. After the weekend of fun and good music either at the club or downtown, we will spend Monday night at Walnut Grove. Dinner will be at a restaurant in Locke. Docking is $20.00. Tuesday we leave Walnut Grove at 10am and then stop at Isleton for lunch at Crawdad Joe’s. You will have a chance to walk around Isleton and see a town…like Locke…that was built by the Chinese when they worked on the levees in the 20’s. Both towns have the original buildings and amazingly they are still standing. We leave Isleton at 2ish and go to Brannan Island Park for the night. Brannan Island Park has showers (10 minutes for $1) and picnic tables, docks, but no power. We thought that since we will have had a late lunch we probably would want a light dinner. So potluck grazing food will be the fare. Next we are off to Sugar Barge on Bethel Island. Sugar Barge has a nice restaurant and bar (yea!). Wednesday night we will eat together in the restaurant…details later. Thursday you are on your own for the day and evening. There is a pool and plenty of places to walk to occupy your time during the day. Meals on your own. Friday we are off to Pittsburg Yacht Club and their chef’s Friday night dinner. Saturday morning we all leave for Home!!!!

Ken Graham Classes (note the date changes) As Safety Officer for the year 2008, your Rear Commodore and I have put together a group of workshops to help all of us have safe and fun days on the water. In addition I would welcome questions on safety or nautical subjects at any time. Just phone or Email me and I'll do my best to answer your concerns. Furthermore if anyone would like to see a subject covered in a workshop let me know and I'll see what I could put together, maybe even including it into one of the schedule below. In the weeks prior to each workshop, I will need sign-ups so I can be sure to have on hand enough handouts and materials for everyone to be able to participate. May 14, 2008 - Boater orientation, Tips and Tricks for safe boating. Particularly oriented to new or relatively new boaters. June 17, 2008 - Marlinspike Seamanship, a few basic knots and a splice for the adventurous. July 15, 2008 - Towing or Salvage, A very important (expensive) question when you have a mishap on the water. Aug 13, 2008 - De-mystification of Tides A rerun of my workshop from 2004 for those who didn't get enough. Sep 16, 2008 - De-mystification of Currents. Also a rerun of a 2004 effort.
