NVYC April, 2009 Newsletter Commodore Spring is upon us with new life bursting out everywhere! Drive through Napa and see all the early blooming trees or along the Napa River to enjoy a beautiful display of plant and animal life. Just returning from the Loch Lomond cruise we saw the effects of change along the river. We are blessed to have a resource like this to use and protect.

Evelyn Silveri reports we have 93 paid members this year. A special thanks goes to Bob Weeks, Evelyn Silveri and Jim Robbers for getting our 2009 membership records and cards completed. No small task that. With members and special “others” like our Charter and Ancient Mariner categories we will have distributed 191 cards this year. Membership is building, but just about the same as last year at this time. We do a lot for folks to enjoy river and water oriented activities whether they own a boat or not. NVYC also provides many benefits to the general public from visiting clubs, organizations using our facilities and sponsoring activities

for youth. Bring a friend to our club to show them it is the place to be. Hosting for our Friday Night Dinners is going well, but still needs a few volunteers to complete the calendar. Standby for contact and please say “yes” when asked Our next big event will be Cinco de Mayo the weekend of May 1,2 & 3. There will be more information coming, but plan on attending some or all of the festivities. There will be a NVYC cruise-in, as well with fun for all. Have a fun and safe time on the water and join us at the club! Clay Parker, Commodore

April Newsletter THIS IS YOUR CLUB!!!!

Each month your flag officers write a column; it is probably read by half the membership as it was before by me. Now that I am a flag officer, I make the assumption that the entire club is awaiting on my every word---no I am not on drugs--it just goes with our responsibilities to report to our friends and members of the current activities of the club. We are a close group of friends and fellow club

…and what a great organization it is because of wonderful people like you. At our March Board of Directors meeting ideas were discussed of even more events; for example, once a month a Saturday night dinner (replacing the Friday night), or maybe a Sunday brunch, or how about a Taco Tuesday for about $5. Bocci ball and Mar Jongg are popular---how about some tournaments. These all sound like terrific suggestions and ideas and they give us the opportunuity to get to know each other even better. Let’s dust off old ideas or generate new ideas. All it takes is someone to chair and direct the activity or help direct. We are an all-volunteer club and when you joined you checked the very

small boxes on your membership application indicating the areas of services you would be eager to commit some of your time and energy to. We now have a beautiful, spacious clubhouse with a new large, usable deck and a commercial stove in the kitchen. Let’s put it to good use. All it takes is a dedicated volunteer like YOU! Please call me if you would like to chair or help on any of the above or if you have another idea. PLEASE DON’T ALL CALL AT ONCE----PACE YOURSELVES. Vice Commodore, Larry Wolfe 253-9158 or [email protected]

members and much of our communication is oral, already known. RIGHT NOW THE CLUB IS IN CRITICAL ACTIVITIES OF RENEWING OUR LEASE AND IT IS IMPORTANT THAT IF ANY ONE OF OUR MEMBERS HAS ANY INFLUENCE WITH THE MEMBERS OF NAPA CITY COUNSEL YOU SHOULD CONTACT CLAY PARKER AND OFFER ASSISTANCE. The cruise to Loch Loman was a complete success and our hats are off to Kurt Stahr on a great job. The weather was great on Friday, windy on Saturday, and Sunday weather attracted some vocabulary that is unavailable in this column. The April cruise out is to Emeryville for opening day on the 24th. Steve Vartan is in charge of this one. For those of you that have smaller vessels, he has graciously offered the extra staterooms that are available on Stahrship. Kurt and Dominique have been unavailable for comment. The cruises are

a great way to get to know other members on a one on one basis--so if possible, try to participate. For example, on the last cruise, Commodore Clay was testing his new radar while we were all rafted off, and Scott and Diane stepped off their boat with a radiant green glow as they headed for dinner. Clay having an insurance background was in denial. It is important that we make our club stronger by participation and encourage less active members to step up. It is not always about owning a boat, but participating in other activities---Bill Newton has offered to instruct in Bocce Ball if the student picks up his bar tab-depending on your skill level that may or may not be a profitable adventure. Bill is a skilled player and a good instructor. Let us all devote our time and support our club. Dirk Kruidenier 'the rear' Rear Commodore

LOCH LOMOND CRUISE Seven NVYC boats and one trailer left Napa on March 13th and headed for Loch Lomond Yacht Club to attend their annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The trip over was on smooth, but somewhat foggy, waters, with the cruise culminating at LLYC with the Agnews welcoming the fleet with Bloody Mary’s. Friday evening LLYC hosted a happy hour that included a performance by an Irish dance group from a local dance school. Saturday evening began with a cocktail party on Starship, with Toru and Sumiko driving over due to rough water on San Pablo Bay earlier in the day. The group then moved up to the club house and enjoyed a dinner of corned beef, cabbage and green beer. Sunday morning’s departure was earlier than usual to beat a low tide, but the water was smooth for the ride home. GREAT CRUISE. Kurt Stahr

Cruise In Tug Boat Cruise in. Clyde & Kathleen cooked a delicious tri-tip and chicken dinner for them and homemade chocolate cake. Lynn Prichetwas the bartender. Philip gave out the safety bags to those who filled out the survey.
