February 2009 Clay Parker Commodore For those that have not been to the club lately you are missing our building program in action! Our new deck is under construction and can be completed shortly. I am sure more will be reported by Rear Commodore, Dirk Kruidenier with his Building & Grounds team. I want to especially thank Bob Weeks for riding the permit process to completion. It only took about a year and a half. Also to recognize Jon Lander and his excellent work in getting our project past the Flood Control District and their approval process, including a slight redesign of the plan. Chris Fultz and Allan Mueller are the principal overseers with a lot of help from Bill Newton, Bob Stephenson, Tom Nunan and Bob Weeks. Standby for a call to help finish the deck on a club “working weekend”. You are going to love having the deck finished and the space added for our use! We are a very busy club with a lot of cruise-ins and cruise-outs planned. Port Captain, Bill Newton, has quite a number of visiting clubs already scheduled and Fleet Captain, Kurt Stahr has 13 cruises on his calendar with a few of them at our own dock. Other events are in the planning stage and you will hear about them in the near term. First scheduled is our Annual Chili cook-off on Super Bowl Sunday. Social Chairs Mark & Nancy Lessler have great plans to announce the winners and have an excellent time. I will bring a big screen TV again to view the game. Look for an announcement in this newsletter and a flyer, as well. There will be a pool for the game and an “opportunity drawing” for our Senior Program headed up by Karen Agnew and our Lady Angels. We also reach out to the Napa community by allowing use of our facility, so a number of events are in the offing fairly soon. A Sierra Club event will be the first next month with others to follow. A cruise-in on Valentine’s Day weekend will have an opportunity for a safety inspection. We may make that open to more than just our club if space permits. I encourage each of you to take part in the activities from Friday Night Dinners to Special Events. Our club is a fun place to be. Bring a friend to help them decide to be a part of us. Membership in our club is a valuable experience and we need to make it available to those of like interests. Have a fun and safe time on the water and join us at the club! Clay Parker Commodore
Dirk Kruidenier Rear Commodore Out with the OLD and in with the NEW. Saturday, December 27th, saw 12 boats cruise to South Beach Yacht Club, San Francisco. Our first event was a cocktail party and hors d'oeuvres contest by “CKing Fun” and “Dancing Wolf”. The contest was won by Carol and Jon Landers with a hot crab spread on toast points. All entries were delicious and devoured by all. The next evening, Sunday, we had a catered dinner in the SBYC club house overlooking the marina and bay. There were 30 of our members in attendance. The next day, Monday, was a beautiful, sunny day. A trip on the Muni to Golden Gate Park and the new aquarium was planned. 270,000 people had the same idea. The lines stretched out of the park and into the residential streets. Most of us gave up and went shopping. That evening we had the White Elephant exchange in the Community Room. After opening and stealing the best and funniest gifts, we went to bed exhausted. It had been a very full day. Tuesday was started off with a Danish breakfast by Karen Agnew and Merrilee Newton. As usual it was delicious. The rest of the day was spent exploring San Francisco and SALES! NEW YEAR’S EVE started with a cocktail party on the “Elsinor” and then dinner and dancing at the SBYC. At 11:00 p.m., we adjourned to the “Starship” for dessert, champagne and fireworks. It rained the day before we left and the day after we came back. All in all a great time. Thank you Kurt Stahr for making reservations for this year and next year and Scott Brown for the many complicated slip assignments. Join in on all the fun next year--- get on the NVYC website and sign-up for some or all of the cruises. Friday night dinners are going fast. Sign up and get the date you want. Call Nancy Mueller or Lorie Fultz. Vice Commodore, Larry Wolfe
There are many activities going on during the first two months of the year; the biggest one being the deck expansion of the club. We owe many thanks to the hard work of the members which include Bill Newton, Bob Stephenson, Tom Nunan, Bob Weeks and Tom Nunan to name a few. Bob Stephenson is also working on a separate project to increase the electrical out put at the dock and deliver a supply of water. If any members have some time to help with these projects, please contact any of the above individuals and they will be very grateful to your assistance. Kurt Stahr (this years fleet Captain) has been aggressively at work with his committee. They have a cruise scheduled for every month and it is always prudent to get signed up early. Kurt’s committee consists of Steve Vartan, Charlie Agnew, Clay Parker, Bob Magoon, Mark Cordeiro, Ken Graham, Scott Brown, Norm Madsen, and Larry Wolf; all of whom are under close spousal supervision. My favorite is the Blue Water; and if you have not ventured out under the Golden Gate before, it is always more much enjoyable to have that experience shared with our club seafarers. The web site will be managed this year by Clay Newton (Bill's Son) and he will be joining the club as a new member. He has a great deal of experience in this area and should make an excellent contribution to the management of the site. While I am on the subject of new membership, Evelyn Silveri is the one to contact for new member applications. We should collectively strive to bring in new members each month so we can enjoy a modest growth and keep ahead of attrition, The completion of the deck should certainly enhance the dynamics of the club and with a little luck be ready for Valentines Day--I am hoping to use that as a surprise for my Valentine (I am a dead man). Don't forget Super Bowl on Feb. 1st -should be a lot of fun-- --"Go Cardinals"---modest wagers are accepted. Dirk Kruidenier Rear Commodore
South Beach Cruise Out– New Years
THE PRESENCE OF A GREAT NEW DECK
Senior Christmas Program What is the Senior Christmas Program? Years ago [they can't remember when] Jackie Finnegan and Kathy Nord started a program with Vallergas Market. The Napa Valley Yacht Club gave them $1 and in return, Vallergas gave them $2 in a gift certificate. Vallergas still does this with an exchange rate of $3 to our donation of $2. The Volunteer Center gives us names of needy seniors and we buy certificates for them. This year we gave $5,700 dollars of gifts. We do buy some Safeway gift cards, but that is an even exchange. Also members donated hotel soaps and shampoos [some loved getting more room in their closets] and that went over very well. I basically have 2 fundraisers. The most popular one is during the Cinco De Mayo cruise-in, when, with donated items from Club Members we create baskets for a silent auction. Last year we raised $2,154 with this function. The second fundraiser is during the month of November and the beginning of December, when members mail in checks for whatever amount they feel they can afford. There were also a couple of 50-50 raffles and a Friday night dinner group had their own silent auction. One Friday night dinner group sold the extra food and donated those proceeds. Times are a lot different this year than in the past, but I hope we will be able to still show a strong support for our needy Seniors. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call. Thanx, Karen Agnew

Ahoy NVYC Cruisers, The 2009 cruising season is upon us and we have a good line up for the year. February 13 to the 15th is a cruise to NVYC dock for Valentine weekend. The 14th, Valentine Day, the Coast Guard Auxiliary will be at our dock at 9:00 am for our annual Vessel Check. Come get your inspection sticker and stay over for a Valentine dinner. I am thinking Pot-Luck? Unless someone has an idea. March 3 to the 5th we are headed to Loch Lomond YC for the annual St. Patrick's Day dinner and party, which will be held on Saturday evening. Friday evening we have been invited to a cheeseburger and hot dog happy hour from 6:00 to 7:00 at a cost of $7.00 each. Loch Lomond docking is now free the first night and $20 per boat for a second night. April 24 to 26th is the Opening Day on the Bay cruise, more on that later. As soon as the club web site can accommodate I will post the entire years schedule. Kurt Stahr NVYC Fleet Captain for 2009
