Wednesday Nights at McKendree come aLIVE! New ‘Wed Night Live’ scheduling to usher in opportunities for all ages With the addition of our new Children & Youth Coordinator Karen Hattan, an influx of new servants from the McKendree community rising up to help, and an ever-growing congregation Wednesday nights at McKendree (known as “Wednesday Night Live”) will return to more of a family atmosphere with ministry opportunities and programs for all ages.
“The exciting thing about the new scheduling format is that it is first and foremost Christ-centered, but secondly it is set up to intentionally build unity between the many different age groups and interests represented in the McKendree community” says Karen Hattan. With its intense Bible study groups already in place and with the addition of even more, Wednesday nights at McKendree can best be described in this mission summary: “Bringing our diverse community into the

Wednesday Nights (continued) Corporate Worship The newest feature for Wednesday night will be the corporate worship time before everyone disperses from the Fellowship Hall to their Bible study of choice. The current Bible study led by Stephen Handy, now known as “Dinner & A Study,” will immediately follow worship time and will stay in the Fellowship Hall. Those wishing to attend the former “Community Groups” (now to simply be known as “Wednesday Night Bible Study”) will dismiss to their study of choice after worship time. Initially, we will offer Women’s Wed. Night Bible Study, Men’s Wed. Night Bible Study (these groups will continue with the studies previously started), and a new Young Adult Wed. Night Bible Study. Children & Youth The biggest addition to Wednesday night will be for the kids and teenagers. “Let Loose” from 3:00-5:15p every Wednesday at the Christian Life Center will be for children, middle school, and high school youth (THIRST & Thread ministries). Initially this will be a time for supervised games, sports, and activities. Eventually we aim to offer various classes and after-school workshops in addition to a place to come and play when school is over. At 5:15p all will be escorted to the Fellowship Hall to eat dinner with their church family. At 6:00p the children and youth will be dismissed from dinner to start their Wednesday night programming at The Attic (area currently where children & youth meet on Sundays). From 6:00-8:00p kids and youth will engage in praise and worship, fun activities, and Bible study. Child Care As with all church events held at McKendree, the Thrive child care ministry will be available until 8:30p for any families needing child care for ages 5 and under. We are excited to roll out the new Wednesday Night Live and together grow into the knowledge, love, and service of Jesus Christ. Please be in prayer over this new opportunity for our church. As with any new ministry there will be growing pains, lessons to be learned, and much needed support. What opportunities we have at McKendree!

New date for Charge Conference McKendree’s Charge Conference date has been changed from October 6 to Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 6:30p. Please adjust your calendars accordingly! Halloween Event at The Loft McKendree’s rooftop venue The Loft Nashville will hold its First Annual “Fall Tailgate” event this year on Halloween, October 31. This day will be filled with football on the rooftop (watching, not playing!), special guest country music artists in concert, and because of the holiday - wear your costumes! Times and artists to perform will be announced very soon. However, Vanderbilt has a big home game against Georgia Tech and UT plays South Carolina in Knoxville. Ministry recap: Evening At The Archives On September 24, the Friends of Metro Archives had their first meeting under the new leadership of historian Dr. Bill McKee of Cumberland University, who is excited about presenting programs this season under the title "An Evening at the Archives." If the size of the crowd in attendance last Thursday is any indication of interest, the series should be quite successful. The first event was a presentation of the histories of five of the downtown Nashville churches: McKendree, Downtown (First) Presbyterian, First Baptist, Christ Church Cathedral, and St. Mary’s Catholic. It was a special honor to be asked to tell about McKendree's history, one which parallels that of our state and nation. The first Methodist society in the Cumberland Settlement (Nashville) was organized in 1787, the same year that the United States Constitution was signed - 222 years ago! This was one and a half years before
George Washington was inaugurated as our first president! For our presentation we organized the developing history around the seven different churches this congregation has erected, including the one we occupy today. The first three buildings were simply called the Methodist Church in Nashville; then four have been named McKendree for our first American born Bishop after he preached his last sermon in the church. McKendree Methodist Church's history is so much more than buildings. It’s the congregation which has come to serve and worship. We owe a great debt to those who have gone before to remember what they have accomplished in service for ourselves and for others. In 2012 McKendree will have been organized for 125 years. That also will be the year of the Tennessee Conference Bicentennial, which will provide us with a rich opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of both in seeking to serve as Christ would have us serve. It provides us with a time to remember and also to celebrate all the exciting ministries and growth we are experiencing today. Who is to say how many more years McKendree will be serving in downtown Nashville! by Harriet Vivion
