OTM Award Month and Year: February 2009 Nominee’s School: UNC Wilmington Region: SAACURH Category: Resident Assistant ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Nominee: Peter Mattis Nominator: Brennan Carter Address: 601 S. Beginning in January, Peter worked with Melanie Parsons from the Seahawk Landing RA staff to plan how they would transform the Village Clubhouse, a large room on campus, to a room that would portray Japan for a day. As part of Around the World, a campus-wide program where the different residential areas on campus decorate their common areas as a different country, two of the smaller RA staff were paired up to represent Japan. To ease the set-up process and make sure everyone had a job, Peter worked hard to assign different areas of focus, such as culture, food, and language, to different people on the RA staffs. When the night came to set up, everyone knew what their job was thanks to Peter and his preparatory work. He worked hard to make sure everyone had the supplies they needed during the set-up and everyone had a job to do. Also, due to Peter’s 6’3” frame, he was a necessity to the shorter people because he could hang papers and streamers high on the walls and ceiling. Peter also made sure the Around the World-Japan set up was sustainable and encouraged the RA staffs to use PowerPoint presentations instead of huge amounts of paper, for which the program is known to do. This helped cut down on the clutter of the room and minimize breakdown time. Peter deserves to be the February RA of the Month due to his hard work with the Around the World program and his devotion to the commitment he made to delegate the work among the participants.
