MOBILE PHONE The mobile phone or mobile, also called a wireless, cellular phone, cell phone. Cell or hand phone (HP), is a long-range portable electronic device used for mobile communication that uses a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites. In addition to the standard voice function of a telephone, current mobile phones can support many additional services, and accessories, such as SMS for text messaging, email, packet switching for access to the Internet, and MMS for sending and receiving photos and video. Most current mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations (cell sites), which is in turn interconnected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) (the exception is satellite phones).

MANUFACTURERS Nokia is currently the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones, with a global device market share of approximately 40% in Q4 of 2007. Other major mobile phone manufacturers (in order of Market share) include Samsung (14%), Motorola (12%), Sony Ericsson (9%) and LG Mobile (7%). These manufacturers account for over 80% of all mobile phones sold and produce phones for sale in most countries. Other manufacturers include Apple Inc., Audiovox (now UTStarcom), Benefon, BenQ-Siemens, High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC), Fujitsu, Kyocera, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Neonode, Panasonic (Matsushita Electric), Pantech Curitel, Philips, Research In Motion, Sagem, Sanyo, Sharp, Siemens, Sierra Wireless, SK Teletech, Sonim Technologies, T&A Alcatel, and Toshiba. There are also specialist communication systems related to (but distinct from) mobile phones. In addition to the barracuda phone, Nokia also launched several entry-level fashion phones, including cameras and FM radio. This is in contrast to the past when most phone manufacturers have offered basic phones into India, with very little functionality. Nokia has managed to grow its world-wide share of the mobile phone market to 36% over recent quarters by targeting markets such as India and China, where mobile penetration is fairly low at 13% and 35% respectively. India has more than 166 million mobile subscribers and this is growing rapidly.

MOBILE NETWORK OPERATOR A mobile network operator (MNO), also known as carriage service provider (CSP), wireless service provider, wireless carrier, mobile phone operator, or cellular company, is a telephone company that provides services for mobile phone subscribers. The process of becoming a mobile network operator within a country usually begins by acquiring a radio spectrum license from the government. The precise spectrum obtained does depend on the type of mobile phone technology the operator intends to deploy. For example, a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network will require a GSM frequency range. The government may allocate spectrum using whichever method it chooses, although the most common method is an auction. Recent allocation of 3G and WiMax licenses in Europe has been auctioned.

GLOBAL TELECOM MARKET 1 BILLION CELL PHONES SOLD IN 2007 Based on the market research released by Gartner, in 2007 the mobile phone market registered more than 1.15 billion units sold. This is more than 16% increase compared to 2006 (990.9 million units sold). The developing markets (China, India and others) played a great role in boosting the numbers. In the developed countries, such as the US, Canada, Germany, France etc., most of the consumers already had their phones, but were looking for replacements with better functionality (hi-res cameras, TV support, GPS, etc.). The leader in sales for 2007 is Nokia with 435 million units sold. In Q4, the Finnish company managed to gain 40% of the market share, but it will still need to stabilize its positions in the US. Perhaps it should try to offer some of its Nseries with a service by one of the major wireless players on the mainland.

and an investment of more than Rs. 2 Billion is expected over the next few months. Recently, an amount of more than Rs. 14 Billion has been invested in this sector through the issuance of the licenses for Long Distance International (LDI), Fixed Local Loop (FLL) and Wireless Local Loop (WLL) and a large number of reputed national and international companies participated in the auction for Wireless Local Loop. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has successfully completed the first phase of telecom deregulation through a transparent and well-defined regime. During this phase total 265 licenses were issued including 12 LDI, 73 FLL and 180 WLL licenses. Now, as different companies have obtained their licenses, PTA in now making its best efforts to ensure that licensees may start their businesses as soon as possible so that a larger number of population may benefit from these modern sources of communication and particularly residents of rural and far-flung areas might be able to take the advantage of these state-of-the-art communication and information services. Keeping in view the significant number of companies having licensed, it may be presumed that the entry of these companies will lead to a highly competitive market with an outcome of wide range of choice for customers. Similarly this huge investment will also create countless job opportunities.

MOBILE PHONE IMPORT UP 6 TIMES IN 3 YEARS IN PAKISTAN As reported by The News, the import of mobile phones in Pakistan has increased almost six times over the last three years. This is alarming because it causes huge drain on foreign reserves and deprives Pakistan of the economic benefits of telecom growth. One wonders why have we not come up with any alternatives yet? I find it completely unacceptable and a failure on the part of Pakistan government.

During July-November 2006 of last year, mobile phones worth $294.7 million were imported in the country as compared to $51.3 million during the same period in 2003.

CELL PHONE USERS IN PAKISTAN PREFER STYLE OVER FEATURES A latest study conducted by Nokia pointed out that the people in Pakistan prefer style more than the need of being connected. The study says that the new devices combined with a attractive fold design with quick cover keys is bringing out substance to style, which is more acceptable in Pakistan as compared to other markets in the region of Asia and Asia Pacific. The study said that for innovation-conscious users ‘we need to offer intelligent and entertaining multimedia functionality in an easy to use, ultra slim package’. Talking to The Nation regarding the study and cell phone users’ preference for Nokia in Pakistan, Tomi Paatsila, Vice President of Mobile Phones Sales and Market Operations for Nokia in the Middle East and Africa said that the users in Pakistan had surpassed others in the demand for innovation in technology.

He said that the cell phone users in Pakistan were involved more in style, which was beyond their expectations. He said the users in Pakistan needed style and design more than other features. He said that Nokia was considering of doubling its investment in Pakistan looking at the response. He said that Nokia has conducted a comprehensive and detailed study of mobile phone users and Pakistani users have surpassed their forecast in the market which will be over 3 billion subscribers by 2008. Tomi said that youngsters demanded innovation in multimedia computer that brings the complete experience to a sleeker body. He said that Nokia has created a very eye-catching device using premium materials to enclose world-class features and experiences.

THE INCREDIBLE GROWTH OF MOBILE PHONE SERVICE IN PAKISTAN Incredible things are happening in Pakistan. Mobile phone subscribers grew from 2.4M in 12/2003 to 5M in 12/2004. That’s impressive, but going from 5M to 18M subscribers in the first 10 months of 2005 is incredible! Since telecom has a strong positive impact on productivity (exceeding that of roads, electricity and even education), I wanted to understand what had triggered this growth. The answer appears to be three things: increased competition reduced restrictions on foreign direct investment (FDI) and reduced taxes, especially on service activation. Mobile phone service was introduced in 1990, with two operators but heavily regulated and taxed. Service was blocked completely in some cities at some times to prevent terrorists from using cell phones. Things gradually began to change after a new telecom act in late 1996. As a result, when Imran visited in 1998, service was back on everywhere, but his brother didn't feel any need to have a mobile phone. By 2001 there were four operators in the market (with the PTT entering the mobile market at the beginning of the year under the brand name UFONE) and the activation tax was down to Rs. 5000 (~US $85). Things started to accelerate. By the end of 2002 there were 1.2M mobile subscribers. It appears the real changes happened in 2004. First, in April the government granted two more licenses. Telenor won one of those licenses, built a network and launched services in February 2005. Warid won the other, launching services in April 2005. Second, in June 2004 the government abolished the remaining restrictions on foreign direct investment permitting foreign investors to retain 100% equity in their investments. And third, they dropped the activation tax to Rs. 500 (~ $ 8). Clearly, the two new operators coming on line in early 2005 have caused a lot of market activity, but their network build out was helped by the largest annual foreign direct investment that Pakistan has ever seen. Finally, the cost of acquiring service has fallen below a critical breakpoint, in part by the reduction in activation fees and in part by the ever declining costs for mobile phones and mobile phone infrastructure. A critical factor in the rise of the mobile subscriber base in Pakistan has been the reduction in activation fees.

MARKET SHARE With the monthly additions average around 2.5 million subscribers, 2007 has been a phenomenal year for the mobile market growth in Pakistan. Here’s a look at the numbers (from PTA site) for the first 8 Months Of 2007. A quick analysis of this data reveals few trends about market leadership. Mobilink gained the most subscribers (5.45 million) in this period. Its market share has been decreasing gradually but that’s expected with the increase in competition and tele density. Telenor was the fastest growing company, 45% of their current subscribers (5.35 million) were gained this year. No doubt that Telenor has emerged as a strong contender. It took a small lead over Warid in March and has been able to maintain it. The rate of growth for Ufone has been impressive as well. It gained 5.32 million of the approx 20 million new subscribers in first 8 months of this year in Pakistan. Paktel has been barely able to reverse the negative trend of subscriber losses.

PAKISTAN TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANY LIMITED (PTCL) Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is the largest telecommunication company in Pakistan. Government of Pakistan sold 26% shares and control of the company to Etisalat in 2006. In 1995, Pakistan Telecommunication (Reorganization) Ordinance formed the basis for PTCL monopoly over basic telephony in the country. It also paved the way for the establishment of an independent regulatory regime. The provisions of the Ordinance were lent permanence in October 1996 through Pakistan Telecommunication (Reorganization) Act. The same year, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited was formed and listed on all stock exchanges of Pakistan Last Year, in middle of 2005 Government of Pakistan had decided to sell at least 26 percent of this company to some private agency. There were three participants in the bet for privatization of PTCL. Etisalat, a Dubai based company was able to get the shares with a large margin in the bet.

The company commenced its operations under the brand name of Ufone from Islamabad on January 29 2001. Ufone expanded its coverage and has added new cities and highways to its coverage network. After the privatization of PTCL, Ufone is now owned by Etisalat. During the year, as a consequence of PTCL’s privatization, 26% of its shares were acquired by Emirates Telecommunication Corporation (Etisalat). Being part of PTCL, the management of Ufone has also been handed over to Etisalat. During the year July 2005 to June 2006, Ufone continued on the path to success. OPERATING PERFORMANCE Ufone’s operational performance has been very encouraging. CELLULAR COMPETITION You can call it 'cellular war' as the intensity of competition is so high. In Pakistan’s telecom industry, millions of confused and satisfied subscribers look up to the service providers for them to sustain at 'one' fixed tariff policy. The variation in tariff plans almost every other month is outcome of severe competition between cellular companies especially after entrance of two new cellular companies in 2005. Nearly all cellular companies in Pakistan modified their tariffs during last 12 months.

PAKISTAN - 10 MILLION NEW CUSTOMERS IN 2007 Cellular News has reported that Pakistan gained 10 Million new cell phone customers in first 4 months of 2007. Not much of a news but it shows that the rate of growth is still in high gear. Telenor garnered the biggest portion, with 3m or 30% of the total, ahead of Mobilink (27%), Ufone (25%) and Warid Telecom (21%). Ufone was the best performer in April, adding 0.89m customers, or 32% of the monthly total. Mobilink crossed the 25m customer barrier, becoming only the 11th Asian mobile company to do so, after China Mobile, China Unicom, NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, Telkomsel, Bharti, Reliance, BSNL, Hutch etc.

In October 2006, Telenor entered into an agreement with Vodafone Group for the acquisition of subsidiary Vodafone Sweden for a consideration of NOK 8,170 million, including assumption of debt. Telenor Pakistan is a wholly owned subsidiary that started operations on the 15th of March 2005 and holds one of six mobile licenses in Pakistan. Its also the fastest growing cellular network of Pakistan. Currently Telenor holds the second largest GSM and the largest GPRS and EDGE coverage in Pakistan. It has also achieved the second largest retailer network in Pakistan within the 2 years of its operations and it has started operations in Azad Kashmir and the Northern Areas of Pakistan. Paktel was the first ever company granted license to carry out cellular phone services in Pakistan, set up by Cable & Wireless. It carried out AMPS services until 2004, when the company launched GSM services as well. Its main competitor emerged in late 1990s as Instaphone and soon began to dominate the market. Millicom International Cellular S.A. on Sunday, 22nd January 2007, said it will sell its 88.86 percent stake in Paktel Ltd. to China telecom for $284 million, which includes the repayment of inter-company debt. The sale implies an enterprise value for Paktel of $460 million, Millicom said in its press release. On 4th May 2007, Paktel was renamed to CMPak. UFONE ANALYSIS UFONE’S APPROACH TO CUSTOMER FEEDBACK You walk into their store to pay the bill or get something done — that transaction is entered into their POS / CRM / Billing / ERP system. One day later Ufone sends you an SMS hoping your experience was well, and asking a simple question: “Was your experience satisfactory? Send reply ‘yes’ or ‘no’. SIMPLE, AND TO THE POINT Ufone’s approach is good in that it is a dead-simple feedback form — a Yes / No vote is easy enough that people might reply, and is also enough to form a very simplistic model of using that feedback to improve operations. The costs of this approach, however, is that Ufone will not know why people are not satisfied, and for this they will have to work closely with the Line or Business Center managers as well as sort through reports of customer service staff. Even then, they will twist data — in today’s customer experience world, skewed data can be hazardous to a company’s health. The other major issue with Ufone's approach is that it is an interruption based approach. If I get an SMS at an odd time, I wouldn’t care if the SMS says “thank you for visiting our store”, it interrupted me and hence has a chance to put me off. Especially because Ufone keeps sending an SMS every day until you give up and reply! MOBILE PHONE USERS CAN SEND VOICE MESSAGES INSTEAD OF SMS Telenor Pakistan and Ufone Pakistan are set to launch the world’s first interoperable voice messaging, or voice SMS, services in 2008 following successful voice messaging trials towards the end of last year. The trials were based on the technical specification developed by the GSMA, the global trade association for the mobile phone industry. Voice messaging, an alternative to SMS, offers a simple and unobtrusive way to send a message to another mobile phone user. The service is of great value worldwide, especially in countries with lower literacy rates and character-based languages, which makes text with a standard alphanumeric keypad timeconsuming and inefficient. To send a voice message, the caller simply dials a code (usually the star button) before the recipient's number and records a message lasting up to 30 seconds. The recipient is notified by a text message, which often has a one-touch link to a recording of the message. FINDINGS I observed a trend of aggressive marketing and advertisement by the mobile operators in Pakistan. They proudly announce 50 paisa, 3 paisa, 1 paisa call rates. Trying to one-up other competitors, the advertisements emphasize the lowest possible rate to grab the consumer attention. In reality the low rates being advertised come with many conditions. To figure it out one has to read the fine print carefully that usually marked with * (asterisk). I think this is unfair to the consumers and we need to criticize this trend which some may characterize as deceptive marketing. Pakistan has remarkable growth in telecommunication industry. It is found that 75% population of Pakistan has mobile phones and the counting is increasing day by day. PTA recorded customers are about 82,514,536. According to current research that is conducted in March 2008, the Tele density is increasing 52.2% yearly. This is huge craze in mobile industry. Since I am working on this project, I found some irregularities:

• NETWORK CONNECTIVITY PROBLEM People are worried about cellular service they often complaint that cellular operators are not willing to enhance their services. Caller feels disturbance, busy network, and unauthorized call ending.

• DIRTY SMS Cellular operators provide bundle SMS / MMS offers which results huge load on networks. Bundle offers also cause dirty and unethical jokes and SMS.

• ROUGH/UNREAL IDEAS IN ADVERTISING Many cellular service companies are using rough ideas for TV advertisement. Specially prepaid products are not belonging to realities. The imagination is not attractive and not belongs to human.

• TOO MUCH ADVERTISEMENT Cellular companies are having bombardment of advertisement on TV channels. People are fading up with this type of unnecessary advertisements.

RECOMMENDATION Cellular operators are providing their best but I have some suggestions to deliver more effective service.

 INSTALLATION OF EQUIPMENT WITH PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS Cellular companies must understand the worth of their presence in the market. If there is a growth, there is immense competition. Cellular companies should pay attention on the service which is providing to customers. They just spend on their network growth but don’t realize the value of service. Advanced Technological equipment should be installed with professional engineers this will benefit the consumers.

 CALL RATES & SMS BUNDLE OFFER Companies should minimize the call rates instead of SMS rates. Low SMS rates causing dirty and non-sense jokes which is building unsecured society. Adults are wasting their time in sending and receiving unnecessary messages on mobile phone.

 ATTRACTIVE ADVERTISING After having comments on advertising campaigns with different living standards, I observed that companies are not efficient in advertising. Mostly cellular advertisers are using rough and unreal ideas which are not changing consumer’s perception towards any cellular service. Marketers should convince in polite way instead of Bhangra style. Companies should implement the effective advertising strategies which affect the consumer and easily deliver message.

 CONTROL ON ADVERTISING AND BUDGET Too much advertising lost its importance; companies should control the spots of advertising. They should avoid too much repetition of ad. People faded up and don’t want to watch ads. They should educate the people and give proper complete message against call rates and other value added services Companies spend much money on advertising campaigns; they should control it and pay attention on service.

CONCLUSION This project “Advertising Techniques Used by Cellular Companies” has been very energetic for me and my career. I learnt a lot while completing this project. The knowledge I gain is valuable and the contacts I met with are more valuable. This has been a great experience of my life. I faced many complications to find the correct and latest information. Alham-do-lillah I succeeded to deliver the best. I researched on Advertising techniques and types of advertising. Most valuable information is the rates of advertising on different medium such as TV, Radio and print medium. Telecom industry is most growing industry of Pakistan still huge investment required for coverage. The market also has strong competition after the entrance of China Mobile Company as player. Competitors are hiring professionals to entertain the consumer which is resulting technological implementation and value added services. I reveal some complications in “Findings”. It comes to know that people are worried about call rates they don’t prefer any particular company. Consumer searches good service with lowest call rates, although companies are minimizing call rates this will result more growth in the market.
