Tutorial Notes Tutorial 5 Sprints Practice sprints through determining how far students can run within 3 seconds - Students predict where they can run in 3 secs – place cone where they think - Can use any method to work out how far, just can't use watch - Test with stop watch – proper run through - Repeat 3 times, trying to beat it - Shows that as long as everyone is trying their hardest to beat their own distance, that’s what is important - Turn around to do handicapped attempt – run from cone - Elements of inclusion – decide where they run to - Converge to own distance -> Convergent Discovery This could be progressed and used with other styles: - Progress into individual practice for starts - Include reciprocal or self-check styles - Drive phase - Finish – dip Considering handicaps - Handicap has to be considered - Suggestions: wear bibs, start at different times - For example: Start 1500 at different types to account for handicaps, take away time as they come through if wearing a bib Relays Teaching and practicing the change overs for relays - In groups of 4 - Students to attempt with high five first - Progress to using batten - Students to determine their own order - Have to have change over within area – indicated with cones - Attempt many times to improve - Style is up for choice – could start with individual, then reciprocal to self-check Progression - Students aim to beat the 1500m Olympic record with 9 students, with batten changes throughout – enhances motivation, allows practice of batten change and allows students to appreciate how quick the Olympic athletes actually are * Would be able to use station teaching to have change overs, sprints and shot put occurring at the same time – teacher with shot put group…needs supervision Throws - Throw on curve – easier to supervise whole class - People measure with feet/steps and have tape measure in separate area that they measure against to get distance while their pair is throwing – students can measure rather than the teacher and allows more to be achieved within the time

Practice from starting on knees, standing up with no movement , then sink and do it no twist, then sink and twist – adds momentum (rotation) – shows how the shot is improved when adding the twist and movement, therefore, height, muscle in legs and rotation in shot -> Guided Discovery Can use medicine ball – practice skill for all throws (body movement) with partner Use hoops for discuss – practice movement Elastic band for javelin – pulling with elastic band
Hurdles - Set up hurdles grid - Hurdles to be put at smallest height - Students go through practice of 7-8 steps before first hurdle, then three steps to the next hurdle - Students work at own skill and are able to change the lane they complete in to therefore suit their skill level better - Encourages participation and develops the skills needed in hurdles, rather than just getting students to jump over the full hurdle - Students have choice in which lane to attempt -> Inclusion
