Mark Thomas [email protected] Welcome to our beautiful city and to the fifteenth edition of the second season of “The Sibenik Times”. Some say it is the lowest form of comedy others hail it as a genius way of putting someone in their place. Love it or hate it sarcasm is a form of comedy that has been around since the times of the Bible. Sarcasm is, in many ways, the backbone of English humour and apart from the many comedy serials, plays and films that have used sarcasm I have always found that the sarcasm of the “street” is much funnier and poignant. In fact the word “sarcasm” comes from the ancient Greek language and when translated literally means “to tear the flesh” which pretty descriptively sums up the word. The quick wit and speed of mind is what makes sarcasm so hard to conquer and is probably one of the main reasons why people with slightly slower reactions despise it so. But if you’re willing to move on from everyday sarcasm to something bigger and better, you will find it an art, with a noble tradition. Anyway enough of the theory the best way to show the beauty of sarcasm is through some examples. The first one that springs to mind was when I was living in London and it was a time when the IRA was threatening the city with bombs. The London Underground was on full alert for suspect packages and police were confiscating any left luggage. I was travelling on a tube to Victoria station and a security guard on the train noticed an unattended bag. As he approached the bag cautiously the people around it crept away and a circle formed. The officer slowly picked up the bag, then stuck his ear to it probably to hear if it was ticking, then surprisingly he started to shake it violently to the horror of the crowd. One onlooker then shouted “That’s it shake it, if it doesn’t explode it can’t be a bomb!” to which the only explosion was of the passengers into fits of laughter. Perfect sarcasm. I was told another good story the other day. U2 were playing a concert in Scotland and after a few songs Bono asked the audience to be silent. As Bono is not only a showman but also a political campaigner such displays are not unusual. He then started to slowly and deliberately clap his hands, clap…clap…clap…, after a few claps he bellowed “Every time I clap my hands a child dies in Africa” the crowd looked on in awe until some witty Scot in the first row shouted out “Stop clapping your hands then!” Perfect sarcasm.

MINISTER OF TOURISM CLAIMS TOURISM SEASON IS OFF TO A GOOD START

KNIN FIRM TO EXPORT NINE TONS OF HONEY TO CANADA Api-Herba, a small herbal company in Knin in Sibenik-Knin county, is planning to export nine tons of green honey to Canada. Api-Herba owner and herbalist Pero Anticevic, who is negotiating with another company in Japan, said today (Weds) he was very satisfied foreign companies had recognized his products. Anticevic told the daily Vecernji list: “I have received an offer from a Canadian businessman who wants to purchase nine tons of acacia and wild-flower honey. He will arrive in Knin in ten days, and we will sign a contract.” Anticevic has asked all local bee-keepers in cooperate in filling that order. A group of Japanese businessmen will arrive in Zagreb on 14 July to meet with Anticevic. Last year Api-Herba started to export its product “propolis,” a resinous mixture honey-bees collect from tree buds, sap flows and other botanical sources, to the Japanese firm Suwa International.

Minister of Tourism Damir Bajs said today (Weds) the number of tourist overnights had declined by six per cent in June compared to the same month in 2008. Bajs added that the number of domestic tourists’ overnights had increased by one per cent in June compared to the same period in 2008. Bajs believes the start of the summer tourist season has been unexpectedly good, Tportal website has reported. Bajs said: “The most-important tourism months are ahead of us. Looking at the numbers, we can be less concerned than our competition. We can cure our problems with an aspirin, honey and tea, whereas other tourism countries need to go in for a serious examination.” In the first six months of 2009, the number of foreign-tourist overnights declined by seven percent, while the total number of overnights dropped by three per cent.

GERMANS ATTRACTED TO CROATIA VACATIONS Croatia is one of the holiday destinations that is proving more of an attraction to German vacationers than Tenerife, it has been suggested. According to the tourism councillor at the Spanish island’s popular Arona region, Angel David Herrera, this is having an effect on one of Tenerife’s main markets. Turkey, Egypt and the Caribbean have also proved to be attractive holiday options for people from Germany, the travel expert explained to the Fortnightly Tenerife News. Croatia’s attractiveness for German tourists was increased recently when it was announced that police officers from Germany will be helping local officials patrol the popular Istria region in July and August. The Earth Times reported that their presence will help visitors who run into difficulty during their stay. Anyone staying in Istria accommodation between September 1st and November 30th may also be able to enjoy one of many Truffle Days, which have been organised to celebrate the local delicacy of the area.

CROATIA IS TOP WORLD DESTINATION FOR ADVENTURE

CROATIAN VISITORS 'STAYING LONGER' It would seem that those who head to Croatia on holiday appear to enjoy their accommodation - as visitors are staying in the country for longer. Tourism minister Damir Bajs has spoken today about how people are taking lengthier Croatia travel trips in 2009, compared to previous years. Mr Bajs was generally confident about the tourism figures in the Balkan nation, suggesting to Reuters that guest numbers are at "very acceptable levels". With tourism accounting for close to 20 per cent of Croatia's gross domestic product, it is important that people continue to visit the country. Beautiful beaches, historic sights and traditionally hot weather throughout the summer mean that it is a popular choice among European holidaymakers. Commenting on the latest data, Mr Bajs said: "We had expected a drop and for the moment it is ... something we can live with. However, key summer months are still ahead of us and the number of last-minute arrivals will determine a lot."

Croatia is a top world destination for adventure, according to the American weekly “People.” The magazine, which has a circulation of 3.75 million, published on 6 July an article entitled “Top Adventure Trips” by well-known journalist Stephanie Michaels. Michaels recommended to adventurers three destinations: Croatia, the US state of Montana and the Republic of Costa Rica. The Ame-

rican journalist was especially astonished by Hvar Island, which she called “Party Island.” Hvar is in the “must be seen” category. The daily Vecernji list has reported that such free advertising is more than welcome for Croatian tourism at a time of recession. Croatia had 20,000 fewer American tourists in the first six months of 2009 compared to the same period last year.

JADRANKA KOSOR IS NEW CROATIAN PRIME MINISTER The Croatian Parliament chose Jadranka Kosor as new prime minister last week. Kosor, a former deputy prime minister and minister for the family, veterans’ affairs and intergenerational solidarity, received the votes of 83 of the 128 MPs who voted. Considering that Parliament has 153 members, Kosor needed a majority or 77 votes to become a prime minister. Parliament has also approved Kosor’s new government. Radovan Fuchs is the new minister of science, education and sports, and Tomislav Ivic is the new minister of the family, veterans’ affairs and intergenerational solidarity. The new ministry of administration will be headed by Davorin Mlakar, and Bianca Matkovic will become minister without portfolio. Petar Cobankovic, the current minister of regional development, forestry and water management, will become minister of agriculture, fisheries and rural development. The other 10 ministers will be the same as in the previous government. Former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader will officially handed over power to Kosor last week.

TRAFFIC INTO CROATIA EXPECTED TO PICK UP Warnings of traffic pile-ups on the southern Austrian roads were issued last week as people from the central European nation and others who were passing through descended on Croatia. The Austrian Times reports that this time of year regularly sees more cars hit the country’s roads as people head away on their Croatia holidays. A Croatia vacation and trips to Italy are the two most popular holidays for the people of Austria, the publication said. Meanwhile, the nation’s geographical position also means that cars from neighbouring countries such as Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic also use Austrian motorways to reach the Croatian and Italian coasts. A recent poll held by the newspaper discovered that the majority of its readers think “fleeing the country for holidays abroad” is the top thing to do during the summer months.

Lawrence’s book Women in Love. • William Shakespeare set his comedy Twelfth Night in Illyria, by which he probably meant Croatia. • The book 101 Dalmatians was written by British author Dodie Smith and published in 1956. • The British forces helped to supply paper for a new newspaper set up during the war - Slobodna Dalmacija. (Free Dalmatia) • Princess Diana visited Croatia in 1997 as part of her campaigning work against landmines. Since her death, the Landmine Survivors Network has staged an annual handball tournament in her memory in which teams from Croatia participate. • A Foundation for donkey protection ‘Hrvatski tovar’ was founded in Tribunj, with the intention to protect this noble animal from extinction.

VODICE The first signs of inhabitants in the Vodice area go back as far as the prehistoric ages. The interior around Vodice was, and in fact still is today, a rich and fertile area where farmers could grow crops. This has been scientifically proven with archaeological discoveries of pots and weapons from the Iron Age. The settlements expanded over time, new inhabitants arrived and new cultures emerged. An important merchant route passed through this area, from Nadin to Zadar, along which many settlements sprung. The name of Vodice derives from the word meaning water (“voda” in Croatian) sources which supplied the whole area. Due to attacks from the sea there were very few houses actually built on the coast line. This however changed in the 15th and 16th centuries when huge walls, including three main forts, were construc-

ted around the city. These were to protect the townsfolk against attacks from the Turkish invaders. However when the threat from the Turkish Empire ceased the walls were unfortunately torn down and the stones and materials were used to construct residential buildings. In fact the last tower was dismantled as late as after World War II. In 1646 a large pier was constructed and this helped to improve Vodice’s growing trade economy. As trade grew the population also expanded and it was decided a new church should be built as the older one on the hill overlooking the town was now just too small. Work started in 1746 and was finally completed three years later in 1749. In 1891 Vodice got official recognition of its size and importance and was classified as an independent municipality comprising of seven smaller boroughs. Modern day Vodice is

a thriving tourist centre, in fact one of the most recognised on the whole of the Dalmatian coast, and guest from all over the world visit the resort to enjoy it’s history, beaches, cuisine, nightlife and tradition. Today the city has 9,407 inhabitants although during the summer months this number is 5 to 6 times more due to the seasonal influx of tourists. Situated only 11 kilometres from the city of Sibenik the resort is in an ideal position to explore the many delights of the county, including the two national parks of Krka and Kornati as well as the fascinating countryside in the interior. In total Vodice has over 50,000 tourist accommodations both in hotels and private apartments which makes it one of the largest tourist resorts in the Adriatic and the resort is just as popular with nautical tourists. A modern marina, comprising of over 400 berths and 90 dry

berths, is located in the gulf of Vodice. The gulf offers first class conditions for sailors as it is well protected from winds and rough sea by the islands of Prvic, Tijat and Logoru which lie less than one kilometre from the shore. The marina has also had world recognition for its cleanliness with the prestigious “Blue Flag” award. In fact earlier this year the marina raised the flag for the tenth time and was even awarded a silver diploma in recognition of their long standing support for protecting the sea and the surroundings. Vodice is certainly a destination for lovers of the sea, whether sailors, swimmers, divers or any form of water sports, there is something for everyone. Islands in numbers Although among the record holders in Europe, according to the category of indented coastlines, Croatia takes second place with a factor of 9,7 In the Sibensko- Kninska County there are 285 islands in the sea (which are larger than 1 kilometer squared) as well as islets, tidal islands and reefs, in fact the county has more islands than the rest of the Republic of Croatia. 149 of these islands are located in the Kornati National Park and the remaining 136 islands have a total surface area of 665 km squared. If we compare this with other European countries we come up with some very interesting results. For example in Great Britain there are 803 islands, while in Denmark there is one peninsular and 499 islands. Further a field the island nation of Fiji in the Pacific Ocean has “only” 322 islands. In Europe the country with the most islands is Finland with an

impressive 179,000 islands (with more than 100 meters squared). For those who don’t know another interesting fact is that country also has 188,000 lakes (over 500 meters squared). Also in Europe Norway has 74,523 islands in their sea and 42,593 inland islands. The Republic of Croatia before half a century had 1,185 islands but after a recount three years ago that was corrected to 1,246. Greece has 1,400 islands, Australia 8,222, New Zealand 1,065, the Philippines 7,100, the Maldives 1,192 islands and in Japan there are 6,852 islands with a surface area over 100 meters squared. To explain these examples a little better Japan has a coastline which is 27,359 kilometers long while Croatia has a coastline

only 4,398 kilometers in length. Among these numerical “giants” from the world’s island nations there is no room for the Republic of Croatia. Although among the record holders in Europe, according to the category of indented coastlines, Croatia takes second place with a factor of 9,7. The leader is Norway (with a factor of 20) with Greece in third place (with a factor of 8) and fourth goes to Spain (with an indention factor of 5). Although these numbers and factors are impressive but to really get a feel for theses islands you need to take a more sentimental outlook. Every island is a machine for producing wonderful memories and every bay on them is a laboratory that invents new feelings.

INTERVIEW Dr. Bernd Fischer – Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Croatia

•• How do you see Croatia’s role inside the European Union and when do you think we will be a full member? To start with the border issue between Croatia and Slovenia, Germany’s position is clear, we want the border issue decoupled from the current negotiations and in fact should not be a part of the overall discussions. In this regard we have spoken to our Slovenian friends as European Union members, as basically everyone else has been doing, and we hope that the Slovenians are ready to allow the negotiations to continue. This current slowing down of the process isn’t productive for anyone. As far as the actual border matter is concerned we want not to involve ourselves, it is an issue between two neighbouring countries and they should find a way to solve this. We are happy to see that the new Croatian prime Minister, Jadranka Kosor, made some nice comments about Slovenian tourists and we welcome such co-operation. Slovenian Prime Minister, Borut Pahor, also gave a warm and heart felt welcome to the new Croatian Prime Minister. There seems to be a much better atmosphere between the two governments recently, and a good atmosphere is really important. I personally know of so many examples of co-operation between the two countries, especially in the border region, that I’m sure common ground can be found. I’m optimistic but the issue must be solved by the two countries. As far as your second point, in order to achieve entry there are 33 chapters that need to negotiated; these are negotiated by the European Commission on behalf of the member countries and the approved by the European Council. There are a few chapters that are still open on top of the border issue and these all have to be dealt with. Whether it a question on how to reform the legal system or create better competition for business we have seen good reactions both from the Croatian government and the Prime Minister. The role of Croatia inside the

European Union is a very important point. Firstly the geography of Croatia is important, every new member brings with them something special, and Croatia for instance has two special points. The first one is that Croatia is an important power in the region, both from a geographical and historical point of view, and this can help to create a real zone of peace and stability in the region. The second point is that Croatia has a very strong international network, it is very well connected with the non European Union countries, and that is one of the reasons that Croatia is inside the Security Council. Croatia is a very important to this region as well as European and International diplomacy. Croatian diplomats are very well recognised around the world. And besides these two points Croatia is a good market for investors, a solid importer of European Union products as well as being a productive exporter. At the end of the day Croatia is one of Europe’s heartlands. •• What are your feelings about Croatia’s entering into NATO? For Croatia as a country and for the foreign policy as a whole it is important to have both full membership of NATO and the European Union. NATO is extremely important from a security point of view. For the first time in a thousand year history Croatian borders are a safe as they can be. According to article 5 of the NATO agreement which reads everyone must protect everyone else means that Croatia is as safe as Berlin, New York or London. Also from what I have heard NATO membership has helped with foreign investment in the country as a whole, people like the idea of investing in a NATO country. To a certain extent it guarantees future investors military, social and legal stability. •• Germany is one of the leading investors into Croatia. How do you see the future of investing in Croatia? In many ways Croatia’s entry inside the European Union will add future investors. Once the

country is a full member then European rules of business and investment will apply, which will certainly be good news for future investors. The overall “investment safety” in Croatia will be raised dramatically. I am sure there will be a number of German investors looking to do more business in Croatia after entry. The area of tourism is definitely one that could see high numbers of foreign investment. The figures for June this year warmed my heart, as the German tourist market exploded in Croatia again. I remember seeing a newspaper headline that read “an increase of 20% in overnight stays from German guests in June.” Outstanding results. Talking about tourism we are currently in the middle of planning a special marketing action together with the Croatian National Tourist Board. Of course Germans have the possibility to drive from their homes to Croatia so with the ever improving highway we could once again see a rise in German tourist this year. Getting back to investments I see a good opportunity for companies to invest in a local level with ecologically friendly solar plants. There are certainly many sites around the country that could be used for this and combined with the hours of sun the country gets it could be a great opportunity for investment. This power could then be used to develop local businesses. Wind energy is also becoming more and more important, so there is another great opportunity. One of Croatia’s biggest strengths is that it has a very solid democracy and responsible leaders of the main political parties. •• On a more personal level how do you see Croatia? As one of the most beautiful countries in the whole world, if I have the opportunity to describe Croatia to someone who doesn’t know the country I ask them firstly how much time they have, because I can easily talk about the history, culture and geography of Croatia for hours and hours.

Klapa evenings Held every Thursday during July and August, organized by the Šibenik tourist board, are the “Evenings of Klapa songs.” These evenings are organized so that the "klapa" tradition of Šibenik and its surrounding could be presented and improved as well as being preserved for future generations. The entire event takes place in the old part of town on a beautiful square surrounded by old houses and the architecture of this part of the

city lends itself perfectly to the performances. The public's desire for this type of musical evenings in Šibenik is the best way to judge the need for it to be held as all the events are well attended, both by locals and tourists alike. Upon arrival to our city, information of this manifestation can be found at our Tourist Information Centre. Spend an evening at the “Klapa”, it’s an evening you won’t forget, an ideal memory to take home from your holiday.

How to have a happy, healthy holiday Most of us love being outside in the summertime, especially if it’s nice and hot. Sunshine not only makes everything look better, it makes us feel good too. Don’t forget though that the ultraviolet (UV) rays in the sunlight can damage the cells in your body. It is especially important to avoid getting burnt by the sun.

What is sunburn?

Sunburn can be caused by overexposure to the sun but some medicines can trigger severe sensitivity to sunlight too. The symptoms of sunburn are not usually immediately obvious, and the worst pain occurs 6-48 hours after being in the sun. Most sunburn is superficial yet can be extremely painful. In severe cases, the skin is a lobster red in colour and blistered and may cause heatstroke.

How do I take precautions?

• Avoid strong sunlight whenever possible, and cover up with loose clothing and a hat. • Thickly apply sunscreen wi-

th a SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15 before going out in the sun. Choose a lotion that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, for maximum protection. • Wear sunglasses at all times • Babies under 12 months should be kept in the shade at all times and covered up with a high factor sun lotion or sunblock. • Encourage young children to play in the shade, and make sure they wear sunhats and a high SPF lotion. • Even on a cloudy or windy day, it is still possible to get burnt.

How do I use sunscreen?

Sun lotions should be applied liberally ½ hour before going into the sun. Don’t forget your nose, ears and lips, which tend to burn easily, it may be worthwhile investing in a total sunblock stick to avoid the pain. Reapply sun lotion regularly, its effects are reduced after one to two hours in the sun. Remember that it can rub off on towels or sand, or from going in the water. Even water repellent lotion should be reapplied because you can rub it

off when you towel dry yourself after swimming.

How do I treat sunburn?

Stop sunbathing immediately. If there is extensive blistering or any other skin damage you need to seek medical advice. • With minor sunburn cover the affected skin with light clothing or a towel. • Move into the shade or preferably indoors. • Cool the skin by sponging it with cool water or by soaking the affected area in a cold bath or a cool shower for ten minutes. • Take extra care when cooling children's burns. • Drink plenty of fluids to replace the water lost through sweating in the sun, and to cool down. Don't drink alcohol because it will dehydrate you further. • If the burns are mild, calomine lotion or an aftersun preparation may soothe them. • For adults, painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help relieve pain and reduce swelling. • For severe sunburn obtain medical aid.

KORNATI – ISLANDS IN THE SUN

The climate along the Sibenik Rivera is a typical Mediterranean one, with mild, rainy winters and hot and dry summers. However, it is perhaps distinct from other Mediterranean climates because of the unusual winds and frequency of thunderstorms. The Bora wind blows uncomfortably cold gusts down the Adriatic coast between October and April, and thundery conditions are common all the year round, even in summer, when they interrupt the warm, sunny days. The air temperatures can slightly vary, depending on the area or

region. Typically, in July and August daytime maximum temperatures reach 29°C, and at night drop to around 21°C. More comfortable, perhaps, is the climate in Spring and Autumn when maximum temperatures are typically between 20°C and 28°C. During winter the coldest temperatures are recorded in the northern Adriatic with temperatures dropping sometimes below zero, while the southern regions of the Adriatic coast generally remain above zero, although this can change when the Bora wind blows.

The Croatian Kornati archipelago (Ialian: Arcipelago delle Incoronate) is located in northern Dalmatia, south of Zadar, but in Šibenik-Knin county. With 150 islands in a sea area of about 320 km² Kornati are the densest archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The southern part of the archipelago, which roughly corresponds to the part of the archipelago called Donji Kurnat (Lower Kurnat) was declared a national park in 1980.

Kornat, with its area of 32,525,315 m², the biggest of the islands, comprises twothirds of the park's land area. Although the island is 25.2 km long, it is no wider than about 2.5 km. There are no permanent settlements in Kornati. Simple houses in well-protected coves such as Vruje, Kravjačica, Lavsa and others are used by land owners as temporary shelters. Most of the land owners are from the island of Murter.

THE SIBENIK BUTTON Through the years, the Šibenik Button decorated the male national costume, a throughout the last few decades it has been recognized as an original souvenir of Šibenik. Today, the Šibenik Button can be bought in the form of earnings, rings, charms, tie pins, broaches, necklaces and other similar items. The Button has the form of two half spheres connected in the middle and hollow inside. The outer part is decorated with thin silver threads and balls. The original Button was made out

of silver, with an exact size; however, today you can find it made out of gold and aluminum and in various sizes. The Šibenik Button, and an authentic souvenir was made by the famous filigree Ljazer Čivjak according to the ideas of the designer Franka Baranović. In 2007, the Šibenik Button was named the most original Croatian souvenir by the Croatian Tourist Board. Today the Šibenik Button is a component of the costumes of Šibenik Klapas (a cappella groups).

Let The Games Begin

‘Bodulska pripetavanja 2009’ sports and entertainment games Everything is ready for the start of the program as they say – Let the games begin -. “Islanders Time Break 2009” (Bodulska Pripetavanja) is a cultural, sport and entertainment event in which representatives of the inhabited islands of the Sibenik area take part. This is the forth year that these “islander games” have been held and this year they are certain to be bigger than ever before. The teams compete in bowls, cards, five-a-side football, water polo, swimming and tug-o-war. From the 18th of July until the

22nd of August the third “Islanders Time Break” will be held and seven teams from all over Sibenik’s Adriatic will contest in seven different venues. Although the games are taken very seriously and the competitors certainly want to win the main goal of the games is to develop the friendships between the islands. Competitors will make new friendships, socialize together, develop cooperations and at the same time entertain their tourists. The games are great publicity for the islands and help to promote jo-

int understandings. Not only do the competitors socialize together but also the teams “supporters”, who normally get together until the early hours. The whole tournament is carried out in a spirit of fair play. All of the inhabitants of the islands have the right to enter the games as well as their guests and tourists. This year the games will be held in Krapanj, Jadrija, Prvić Luka, Zlarin, Prvić Šepurine, Žirje and Kaprije.
