Mark Thomas [email protected] Welcome to our beautiful city and to the thirteenth edition of the second season of “The Sibenik Times”. More and more people are moving around and setting up hone in another country. The European Union has brought with it the possibility to live and work in another member country without difficulties. Every year the visa requirements for living outside of Europe are eased. The term “global village” has never been more accurate. Communications are improving on almost a daily basis, and transportation is expanding and developing just as fast. Technological developments with email, webcams and reduced phone costs also mean that you can speak to family and friends as often as you would when you were at home. One of my friends from England asked me the other day about living in a foreign country. Although it’s just a thought he was curious about “life on the other side.” After thinking for some time I tried to pinpoint the important factors and came up with three key phases. The first is conception – you plan your move from start to finish, the second is – the transition phase – this is the first two years away from home, and the last is the integration phase – when you start to become part of the local community. Each phase has its own special demands and its own problems. But that if he really wants to try to live in a foreign country then do it, you only live once after all so enjoy it as much as you can.

BLUE FLAGS FOR 115 BEACHES AND 20 MARINAS IN CROATIA

NORTH DALMATIA ISLANDS RECOMMENDED A Croatia travel destination that holidaymakers may wish to consider this summer is the Kornati Islands. The Croatian National Tourist Board has highlighted the region as somewhere those looking for accommodation in Croatia might want to stay. It described the Kornati Islands as the “most indented island group in the Mediterranean” and detailed a number of its attractions to tourists. People visiting can head to the Kornati National Park or the Telascica Natural Park, which offers tourists a deep bay in which they can relax and really enjoy their holiday in Croatia. Elsewhere in the country, people heading to Croatia can enjoy the Zadar Summer of Theatre on the Adriatic coast from today until the start of August. According to the tourist board, the festival gives guests to Croatia a chance to “add a special touch of culture” to their summer holiday by watching various theatre productions and dance displays.

Croatia has been awarded 115 Blue Flags for beaches and 20 Blue Flags for marinas this year. To get the exclusive eco-label Blue Flag, a beach or marina has to meet ecological, educational, security and service standards. The Blue Flag Programme is owned and run by the independent nonprofit organisation Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The programme is an international project started by the EU Council in 1981. Croatia has ten-per-cent fewer Blue Flags this year, but that is because of recession, not ecological issues. Because of lack of money, there were fewer applications for Blue Flags this year. ‘Lijepa Nasa’ (Our Beautiful Land) association head Ante Kutle said today (Weds) a Blue Flag was important to many tourists when they choose their summer-holiday destination, the daily Vjesnik has reported. Kutle said: “Last year, Croatia received 145 Blue Flags for beaches and marinas that ranked it seventh on the world list.” The Blue Flag was awarded this year to a total of 3,338 beaches and marinas in various countries.

NO SMOKE´ RESPONDS TO BAR AND RESTAURANT PROPRIETORS The Croatian anti-smoking association “Bez dima” (No Smoke) has issued an open letter in response to bar and restaurant owners’ opposition to the new anti-smoking law. The Croatian Restaurant Association has claimed bars and restaurants have lost 70-to-80 per cent of their business because of the law, which entered into force in May. The association has recommended the Austrian model of solving smoking problems that gives bar and restaurant proprietors the right to decide whether their establishments will be smoking or non-smoking places of business. Bez dima is claiming the asso-

ciation is trying to deceive the public because Croatia has had the equivalent of the Austrian model for the last 10 years and no restaurant or bar owner has decided to ban smoking. Bez dima is charging that bar and restaurant proprietors simply want nothing more than “a permit for smoking,” which is unethical. Bez dima is calling on Croats to think twice before signing the Croatian Restaurant Association’s petition against the antismoking law and preparing to return to stinky, smoky and fusty bars. Bez dima is also criticising the media for neglecting to mention the positive impact of the law.

TRAVELLERS ADVISED ON HOW TO TIP IN CROATIA

INTERNAL CROATIAN FLIGHTS FOR LESS People travelling across Croatia for their holidays will now have the opportunity to purchase cheaper flights. National carrier Croatia Airlines has reduced the cost of some of its internal routes that locals and holidaymakers alike may be able to take advantage of if they book quickly enough - the cheapest tickets are apparently the first to be sold. Citing the Vecernji newspaper, the Croatian Times has revealed that Zagreb flights to Split and Dubrovnik can be found for 210 kunas, including all taxes. People heading on a Croatia holiday from the capital to Pula or Zadar will be able to locate deals for 190 kunas. Some ten per cent of flight tickets for these routes will be made available at the aforementioned cheaper rate. An alternative method of making the most out of a Croatia holiday is to hire a car and stop off at the various points of interest across the country. However, tourists were warned earlier this year that they should book car hire facilities early because the global recession has had an effect on the number of available vehicles in nations across Europe.

For Americans, tipping people who provide a good service is a natural occurrence - but the culture is different in Croatia. Travel expert Franklin Xuereb told Examiner.com that people who choose to holiday in Croatia may not always need to leave a tip after they have enjoyed a meal or other refreshments. He said that if tips are left in Croatian restaurants or cafes, they generally comprise a “small amount” of money. “It is only in the tourist areas

which servers may be expecting a tip,” he explained. “In remote areas unexplored by tourists, leaving a tip is generally unheard of.” In other monetary-related news earlier this year, the UK’s Post Office reported that the Croatian kuna was one of its best-selling foreign exchange markets during the first quarter of 2009. This suggests that more Britons could be embarking on a Croatia travel experience in the coming months.

Krka national park

The region of the Krka River was pronounced a national park due to its geological and hydrological uniqueness, mainly because of the process of the tufa deposits which have built waterfalls. The waterfalls have formed over thousands of years and are still today tirelessly constructing themselves. Numerous deposits, bacteria, algae, moss and other sediments, mostly invisible to the human eye, add to the building process of the waterfalls. The work of these deposits has slowly changed the flow of water and has formed conditions for a number of plants and wildlife to thrive. Exactly these new and varied flora and fauna have brought with them a new look to the Krka

River. Until today in the Krka national park around 900 different types of plant life have been recorded, of which these are made up of a mixture of endemic and very rare varieties. The endemic plants which grow in the national park region are mostly representative of Adriatic varieties which can be found in other areas in the Croatian countryside. On the wet lands around the bottom of the river grows different species and on the stones cliffs completely different varieties. Nature lovers will be especially interested with the plant life on the Roški waterfall. In this relatively small area you can find all possible conditions for all possible kinds of plant life. The Krka National

Park is a spacious, largely unchanged region of exceptional and multifaceted natural value, and includes one or more preserved or insignificantly altered ecosystems. It is intended primarily for scientific, cultural, educational, recreational, and tourism activities such as visiting and sightseeing. It was proclaimed a national park in 1985 and is the seventh national park in Croatia. The Krka National Park is located entirely within the territory of Šibnik- Knin County and encompasses an area of 109 square kilometers along the Krka River: two kilometers downriver from Knin to Skradin and the lower part of the Čikola River. From the flooded part of the mouth, it

is 72.5 kilometers in length, making the Krka the 22nd longest river in Croatia. The source of the Krka River is at the base of the Dinaric Mountains, 3.5 kilometers northeast of the base of Knin and 22 meters below Topoljski Slap, Veliki Buk and Krčić Slap, which are noisy cascades in the winter but run dry during the summer. The length of the freshwater section of the river is 49 kilometers and that of the brackish section is 23.5 kilometers. Significant tributaries of the Krka River include Krčić, Kosovčica, Orašnica, Butišnica and Čikola with Vrb. With its seven travertine waterfalls and a total drop of 242 meters, the Krka River is a natural and karstic phenomenon. The Krka National

Park belongs to the Southern European (Mediterranean and subMediterranean) region. Due to its special position and the mosaic distribution of various types of habitats, it is characterized by exceptionally rich and varied flora and fauna. Eight hundred and sixty species and subspecies of plants have been identified within the territory of the Krka National Park, including several endemic Illyrian-Adriatic species. The wealth of plant species, where warm and dry habitats come into contact with moist and shady ones, are of particular interest at Roški Slap, with its canyon vegetation, and at Skradinski Buk, where you can see the plant species of the travertine barriers.

Our Lady of Tarac On the first Sunday in July the citizens of Murter and the surrounding islands celebrate the festival “Our Lady of Tarac.” The day is marked with a boat trip out to the church of the same name on a local island and is certainly a colourful event. The area around the field Tarac is doubtless the first colonised place in the Islands. A Neolithic axe was found at the neighbouring field Žejkovci, and both fields are surrounded with Liburnian cairns. In the 6th century, judging by everything, the fort Tureta was built on the hill above Tarac, and its garrison ensured safe navigation in the Kornat Channel. Tureta is the only fort from that period that was not destroyed, obviously because it was built at a location where there was no settlement, and the population did not reach for its stones. The fort is in a neglected state today. At the foot of the hill, and it seems at the same time, the church of St. Mary was built

in the area between the small cove and the field. The answer as to which is older, the church or the fort, or whether they were perhaps built at the same time, has not been offered yet. This was a large church (its dimensions are around 20 by 30 m) which probably served as safe haven for sailors who waited in the protected coves of Šipnat, Levrnaka or Telašćica for favourable conditions to resume their journeys. Only the apse and part of the church foundations remain to this day. In the late Middle Ages a small church was built in its nave, devoted to Gospa od Pohođenja (The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary) but which the population names Gospe o’ Tarca. The divine service and the blessing of the fields are held on the first Sunday in July. Hundreds of boats then hasten to Tarac. The votive procession of boats is one of the most beautiful and most interesting religious events in Croatia.

Island of Murter The island of Murter is located in the northwest part of the Šibenik archipelago, separated from the mainland by narrow sea canal at Tisno which is spanned by a 12 meter draw-bridge. Asphalted road (6 km long) connects Murter with Adriatic tourist road, and distance from the city of Šibenik is 29 km. The limestone part of the island is covered by sparse vegetation. On the northwest, there are fertile quaternary layers (loess). The highest point is the pe-

ak of Raduč at 125 meters above sea level. Located at the entrance to the Kornati Islands (Murter inhabitants own most of the land), Murter is an attractive spot for yachtsmen, and all lovers of quiet relaxation. The beginnings of tourism in Murter date back to the 1930's, when Czech Villa was built in Slanica cove. The economy is based on agriculture, olive growing, fruit growing, gardening, cattle raising, fishing and tourism. Murter offers various accommoda-

tion (hotels, condominiums, marinas), nice and quiet beaches, numerous restaurants and taverns, but any visitor to Murter will be especially thrilled if they choose to visit the islands of Kornati in one of the organized tours. There are many sports courts in town (tennis, basketball, five-a-side football), water sports are also an option. During the summer, there are various sports events, preceded by the April regatta Murter - Kornati as an introduction to the season.

Bunari – secrets of Sibenik

•• Could you tell me something of the history of the "bunari"? Just ten metres from the St. Jacob Catherdral, renaissance City Hall and the cathedral St Lovre, behind high stone walls a plateau is hidden which holds four wells, that were in function up until the middle of the last century. “Water is life” and the people of Sibenik have known this for many years. Due to frequent attacks and sieges as well as long periods of drought the ancestors of Sibenik decided to construct a public water system. On the 10th of January 1446 an agreement between the borough of Sibenik and the civil engineer, Jakov Coterr was signed. The contract involved constructing a large centre of water tanks and the idea for the “four wells” was born. The whole project was supervised by Jurje Dalmatinac, a famous civil engineer, architect and constructor. One interesting anecdote is that although Sibenik with a fresh water supply that the Turkish never managed to conquer. Probably this was due to the extremely strong walls, towers and forts that protec-

ted the city at that time. And while the gentry enjoyed clean drinking water from the four wells the general public were forced to use public fountains for their water. In spite of the fact that the wells are located under sea level they contained up to 28,800 barrels of drinking water. In the second half of the 19th century, after the construction of public water mains, the city wells were no longer needed. And during the Second World War they were used as bunkers from air raids. A UK Trade & Investment-sponsored trade mission to Croatia has resulted in the country becoming a major export market for JANVS Design Group, a team of designers specialising in museums, galleries and visitor centres. In the coastal town of Sibenik, JANVS has been appointed as the designer to “Bunari: Secrets of Sibenik”, a project within the Unesco World Heritage Site that is redeveloping four mediaeval, vaulted underground wells, each of which held 28,800 barrels of water. What can tourists expect to see in the "bunari"? An interactive museum in the

very heart of Sibenik, the wells are the secrets of the city. You can see a presentation of old Sibenik architecture, especially the wells and their use, Sibenik legends, important historical events and personalities, traditional costumes from Sibenik, old diving equipment and tools of forgotten trades. There are very interesting stories of maritime trade through history, shipbuilding, pirates of the Mediterranean and of course hidden treasures. Your journey through the museum continues with a story of the natural treasures of Sibenik, the national parks of Krka and Kornati. As well as presenting a calendar of events in the city. In this attractive area of the four wells guests can visually and acoustically have an unforgettable experience. With a combination of lights and sounds and even smells the sights and sounds of ancient Sibenik will reveal themselves. The space has over 400 meters squared and is divided into two halls. What gave you the idea to convert the "bunari" into a tourist attraction? Is six months long enough to repair an object that has seen

years and years of neglect and misuse, to rebuild it and regenerate it to its former glory and to make an interesting cultural attraction from it? In the West probably the answer is yes, but you have to keep in mind that Croatia is a country full of beaucracy which makes the whole situation much more complicated. The current owners are Ivica Pilić and Ivan Livić and they have continued the year’s long project of managing the four wells. In 2004 an exhibition space was opened which won the coveted “Blue Flower” award for the best tourist attraction. And on the ground floor of the object stretching over 250 metres squared is a wine bar and a café bar “Bunari.” Along with a rich offer of fine wines, hot and cold cuisines many events are held there, from weddings, business meetings, concerts of blues, jazz, funk and swing. •• How popular is the "bunari" with tourists? Šibenik is hiding many secrets and surprises. You can discover it with a special trained guide who will take you to all the landmarks in the town, but also to hidden alleyways,

rich with authentic sights and sounds of a Mediterranean life. The story about Šibenik is told through 7 themes: story about the “Wells”, history about Šibenik, famous faces of Šibenik, shipwrecks, hidden treasures of Šibenik, natural treasures, tastes of Šibenik – a café and a souvenir shop. As a part of each theme one can find panels and interactive games, such as a 3D puzzle of one of Šibenik castles, safe boxes with hidden treasures, or a pinball machine on shipwrecks. Have fun! This awardwinning exhibit is built around four 15th-century bunara water storage tanks about 46m (150 ft.) from magnificent St. Jacob's Cathedral. Inside, two floors of sequentially arranged exhibits trace the city's history in words, photos, and even film. All are numbered so visitors can follow the displays in a specific order using a timeline that traces the city's evolution from its origins to the present day. The self-guided tour of explaining Sibenik's culture, development, and famous native sons ends at a coffeehouse on the bottom level, where you can ruminate about what you've just seen.

How to prevent summer holiday health woes While a holiday is a time for relaxation and recuperation, it can also be a trigger for illness and health problems due to sudden changes in climate and diet, as well as increased levels of stress and dehydration from

traveling. Whilst relaxing on one of the beaches in the Sibenik County or exploring the local countryside there are certain things that you need to look out for and take precautions for.

Problem – Mosquito bites Great red swollen blotches all over your newly exposed body is not what you want as you hit the beach. Most bites take about a week to clear up so that will mean you are covered in red spots for the duration of your holiday. Prevention By taking vitamin B12 up to two weeks before you leave for your holiday you can change the taste of your blood which makes it repellent to mosquitoes. A tincture of Lemon Balm rubbed onto the skin has also been found in trials to help prevent mosquito bites. Vitamin B 12 and Lemon Balm tinctures are available at most health food stores and chemists Problem – Swollen ankles/DVT Trying to shove great swollen ankles into your delicate summer holiday sandals is never going to look a very pretty sight. Although swollen ankles from flying usually go down within a day or so, they are still an undesirable result of air travel and can ruin the first few days of your holiday. In addition swollen ankles in some cases can be heighten the risk of DVT (Deep vein thrombosis), which in very rare cases can be fatal. Prevention Taking the DVT prevention supplement Zinopin not only reduces your risk of flight related DVT during the flight, it prevents your ankles and legs from swelling during and after the flight. You can take Zinopin just one day before flying and then1 hour before flying to help reduce swollen ankles.

Problem- Prickly heat/eczema Increased heat and sweating gives rise to heat rashes and skin conditions such as eczema. Being covered in a vicious red rash is bound to an end to your bikini beach body aspirations. Prevention A natural soothing cooling gel made from Cardiospermum (a plant extract taken from the balloon vine) is ideal for calming irritating heat trigger skin conditions. In a recent UK trial is was found to be as effective for some people than steroids in the treatment of eczema. Aside from the trial, Cardiospermum has been examined for its anti-inflammatory and dermatological effect in more than 12 published research trials on its medicinal effects on inflammatory skin conditions which means it can also help with heat rash and sunburn due to its strong antiinflammatory effects. Problem- Diarrhoea You are more likely to get a stomach bug on holiday than any other time and there is nothing that will curtail your holiday fun more than a vicious bout of deli belly. Prevention Lactobacillus Acidophilus is actually a type of friendly bacteria that you can take up to two weeks before you leave for your holiday to help strengthen your intestine in preparation for foreign food. According to several studies, it appears that regular use of acidophilus can help prevent "traveller’s diarrhoea". One double-blind, placebo-controlled study followed 820 people travelling to southern Turkey, and found that use of a probiotic called Lactobacillus GG significantly protected against intestinal infection.

re is almost no need to sit somewhere in the audience, because the audience and the stage is everywhere at Sibenik in those days! Ensembles and actors, singers and dancers, directors and reporters crowd at the time in this centre on the Adriatic coast. The city gave its best times and sites to the river and the sea, but it also gave its best times and spaces to everybody who came along the river and from the sea. The city gave all of them joy and youth, both summers and the shine in the eyes of a child. And the city gave the festival. The festival is forty years old. It is called the International Children's Festival Sibenik - Croatia. To make the festival possible, the old city theatre received actors and puppeteers and musicians into itself four decades ago, filled its auditorium with children and

bowed its knee to Its Majesty the Play. And when it was not enough, the festival left the theatre building 130 years old and spread through the streets and squares, making a theatre out of the city, making them equal, living between dreams and reality. Since then, you can meet a puppet and an actor in city crowds in any moment of the day, mingling with the citizens of Sibenik and their guests, walking towards dreams, turning into dreams, making dreams real and giving them out as gifts. You will meet Alice, just arrived from the Wonderland, the mischievous Pinocchio will peer around the corner, Kekec will sing his merry song, Popeye the Sailor will blow his pipe and eat spinach, Peter Pan will take you to his mysterious Never land ...

CROATIAN CUISINE Croatian cuisine is heterogeneous and is therefore known as the cuisine of regions, since every region has its own distinct culinary traditions. Its modern roots date back to ancient periods and the differences in the selection of foodstuffs and forms of cooking are most notable between those on the mainland and those in coastal regions. Mainland cuisine is more characterized by the earlier Slavic and the more recent contacts with the more famous gastronomic orders of today - Hungarian, Viennese and Turkish - while the coastal region bears the influences of the Greek, Roman and Illyrian, as well as of the later Mediterranean cuisine - Italian and French.

Handmade silk ties are among the best-known Croatian souvenirs. At the beginning, the cravat (tie) was a kerchief worn by Croatian soldiers in the 17th century. In the 18th century, in the form of a broad white scarf, it became part of the traditional male national costume. After that, ties became fashionable, a modern fashion accessory.

A1 HIGHWAY The A1 highway, is a highway in Croatia. It currently measures 416 km from Zagreb (Lučko interchange) via Split to Šestanovac. It is scheduled to reach Ploče in 2008 and later Dubrovnik. The A1 is generally considered to be one of the Croatia's main trunk roads, as it connects the country's continental part and the capital Zagreb with the Croatian coast and

the second-largest city, Split. It is the first highway to cross the mountainous Dinaric Alps (Lika) of the country. A1 is a toll highway. The section from Lučko interchange to the Bosiljevo interchange is operated by Autocesta Rijeka-Zagreb d.d. and the section from Bosiljevo to Šestanovac exit is operated by HAC.

“Oj divojko, diži se iz dvora” Seven different societies from the Sibenik – Knin County, Split County and the Zadar County performed in the festival. They were: Kud Ante Zaninović, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kuu Bezdan Pirovac, Kud Spužvar- Krapanj Brodarica, Kud Koledišće Jezera, Kud Travulin Tisno, Grupa Građana iz Murtera, Kud Fortica-Novigrad Zadar. The festival kicked off with a procession though the main streets of Pirovac to the older section of the town and was accompanied by large crowds, both local citizens and tourists visiting the town. It was a perfect opportunity to take some holiday snaps. The day’s program was organised on the Rudina Square but due to bad weather conditions it was moved inside the main hall. This in a way gave the whole event a much more “domestic” atmosphere. The whole idea of the festival was to show the complete process of meeting, proposing and finally getting married to a girl in times gone by with traditional costumes and customs. Mr. Nenad Milin was the creator of the whole festival and his ideas were certainly well produced, and the event was presented by Nikola Urukalo. The expert jury of Tvrtko Zebec , Damir Kremenić and Jadran Kale had a tough time on deciding which of all the wonderful performers was the most original. But in the

end after serious debate they decided on the local society “Bezdan”, who exhibited themselves in full glory and with many details. All of the performers were awarded the “Zloselski fuštan” for their efforts and the fun continued on the terrace of the restaurant “Malo Misto” with local cuisines, drinks and of course vocal choir music from the group “Canzona.” The main aim of the festival “OJ DIVOJKO, DIŽI SE IZ DVORA” was to create a high quality tourist attraction and one for which the whole town would be recognised. It is the plan in the future to make this a traditional event and to bring even more presenters to perform and to exhibit their local wedding customs. In the long run there are also plans to make the festival an international one. This is an opportunity for all of us, and especially the younger older generation, not to forget our roots, our history, our customs and our traditions. They are a symbol of where we are from and give us the chance to be ourselves. I hope that we are at the beginning of a great success. We were under the spotlight from the jury, the public and the tourists that visited, which at the end of the day was our goal. And the plan for next year is to be bigger and better, stated Marija Šparica, director of the Pirovac Tourist Board.
