Welcome to our beautiful city and to the third edition of the second season of “The Sibenik Times”. It’s been a mixed week for Croatia in the press, with good news coming in the form of ecological matters and a BBC report being blown out of proportion. I guess its all good marketing for Croatia for as they say “there is no such thing as bad publicity.” Certainly Croatia being nominated in the top twenty countries in the world in standards of cleanliness by Forbes magazine was welcome news. I have to say that after living in Croatia for eleven years this didn’t really come as a surprise to me. Almost every city I have visited in my time here has been a model of cleanliness, from the architecture that looks like it’s washed down every morning to the clear Adriatic Sea that is without doubt one of the cleanest in the whole world. Citizens seem to take pride in their country and I can understand why. As the tourist season warms up and the country prepares itself for a massive influx of guests the news that Croatia is cleaner than most other European countries will all help with what could prove to be a great season. So as you’re enjoying yourself on the beach or walking in the city remember to that you are a ambassador of your country and take care not to damage the environment around you. After a slightly uncertain start the pointers look good for this season and once again the Sibenik could see record numbers of guests this year. My fingers are crossed and the Sibenik County is ready to welcome everyone with open arms.«

THE GOVERNMENT MAY ALLOW SHOPS TO OPEN ON SUNDAYS

WHYCROATIA, NEW PROJECT LAUNCHED FOR TOURISTS ATTRACTION

The government may give shops permission to stay open on Sundays throughout the year. At present, shops may remain open on Sundays only during the summer tourist season. Prime Minister Ivo Sanader is planning to abolish the ban on Sunday openings introduced in January 2009, according to Poslovni dnevnik (Business Daily). The daily said Sanader would do so during the next 10 days before upcoming local elections. Dubrovnik Mayor Dubravka Suica, who gave city shops permission to open for cruise tourists on Sundays from 1 April, has already violated the ban. Many Adriatic towns and the Croatian Chamber of Trades and Crafts (HOK) have expressed opposition to the ban. They have already asked Sanader to allow shops to remain open on Sundays even before the start of the summer tourist season.

A group of Croatian internet users led by Boris Licina Borja have launched a new initiative named “WhyCroatia” to promote Croatian tourism. Their goal is to collect as many videos as possible about Croatia lasting no longer than three minutes on website www. whycroatia.org/, where prospective visitors can find out why they should visit Croatia. The organizers said the promotion would not cost anything and anyone could participate. The initiative offers video categories from sport to food. All who want to participate can shoot a video, put it on You Tube and send a link to organisers.

MONUMENT TO CROATIAN KING ZVONIMIR UNVEILED IN KNIN A monument dedicated to Croatian King Dmitar Zvonimir will be unveiled in Knin at 11am on 18 April. Knin, in Sibenik-Knin county, was the capital of the Kingdom of Croatia around 1080 during the rule of Zvonimir, which has led to Knin being known as the “City of Croatian Kings” or “Zvonimir’s City.” Zvonimir was crowned on 8 October 1076 at Solin near Split and reigned until 1089. The monument, to be located in city park “Trg Oluje” (Storm Square), is the work of Croatian sculptor Aleksandar Guberina from Sibenik and has been financed by Knin and the “Braca Hrvatskog Zmaja” (Brothers of the Croatian Dragon) association in Zagreb. The unveiling ceremony will include a Mass and a procession. The “Napredak” association and the “Knin klapa” band will provide the music for the event.

CROATIA REGISTERED RECORD SALES OF FLIGHT TICKETS IN 2008 Croatia registered a record number of sales of tickets for commercial flights in 2008. The 89 Croatian travel agencies with an International Air Transport Association (IATA) licence sold 292,500 plane tickets last year, 8.6 per cent more than in 2007. The tickets were worth 600 million kunas or 81 million Euros, 6.25 per cent more

than in 2007, according to the “Business. hr” website. The Croatian Association of Travel Agencies claimed today (Tues) the sales had set a record. The association added the figures for 2009 would not be as good since there had been a sales decline of 27 per cent in the first two months of 2009 compared to the same months last year.

CROATIA OPENS ARMS TO RUSSIAN, UKRAINE TOURISM Croatia has opened its arms to Russian and Ukrainian holidaymakers with the news it will be relaxing visa requirements. As reported by Reuters, the Balkan nation’s government is also looking at a number of other methods of encouraging foreign tourists to visit Croatia. Croatia’s tourism minister, Damir Bajs, told a national news agency that the government would be easing measures for visitors from the two former Soviet countries. Mr Bajs told Hina: “The tourism ministry propo-

ses to scrap visa regime for Russian and Ukrainian citizens during the summer season and also some fees [on hoteliers] imposed by local communities.” Reuters noted that officials in the country would be meeting later this week to discuss further measures on boosting Croatia’s tourism appeal. Figures published by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics earlier this year showed that the number of travellers visiting the country from both Russia and Ukraine increased last year.

NATO CEREMONY MARKS ENTRANCE OF ALBANIA and CROATIA A NATO flag-raising ceremony yesterday punctuated the entrance of Albania and Croatia into the 60-year old collective security alliance. Attending the event at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, was NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and the heads of state of the newly added member countries. “The accession of Albania and Croatia demonstrates that the idea of freedom is irresistible,” de Hoop Scheffer said. “It demonstrates that nations and peoples across the Atlantic come together when they are given the chance to make their own free choice. This is the clearest demonstration that in today’s Europe, geography no longer is destiny.” The enlargement, which became official April 1, marks only the sixth time the organization has expanded its borders, and brings to 28 the number of members now in the alliance, six decades after a dozen nations endorsed the North Atlantic Treaty at an April 4, 1949 ceremony here. De Hoop Scheffer said membership for Albania and Croatia marks the well-deserved reward for many years of hard preparation. “It is a full vindication of

the vision of those who have, for years, seen their countries’ future in NATO,” he said. “Both countries will now have a seat at the table where key decisions are made to shape Euro-Atlantic security. And both countries can now enjoy the ultimate security guarantee of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.” Article 5 stipulates that an attack against one NATO member is tantamount to an attack against the whole alliance. Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha expressed pride in raising his nation’s flag alongside those of other alliance members. “For this flag and the nation it represents, this day is the greatest day after the declaration of independence of Albania,” he said. Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said the day was one of joy and celebration for Croatians. “We have raised the Croatian flag at NATO Headquarters, which will represent, alongside the other 27 allied banners, the shared values, such as freedom, peace, democracy, rule of law, human rights, and social market economy,” Sanader said. “After many testing years and despite all difficulties, we can proudly say that we have succeeded.”

POLAND BACKS CROATIA FOR EU ENTRY Officials in Poland have backed Croatia for entry to the European Union (EU) in the near future, it has been reported. On a trip to the capital Zagreb, a top ranking Polish politician praised Croatia and gave his country’s seal approval for the Balkan nation’s admission to both the EU and NATO, according to Hina news agency. As translated by Javno, the Polish parliament’s speaker, Bronislaw Komorovski, told the news agency: “Poland is

very interested in seeing Croatia enter EU and NATO. “From our experience we know that all … issues are more easily solved through the process of integration.” He added that country was “counting on” Croatia being an ally of Poland’s in the two regional organisations. Figures published by Croatia’s Bureau of Statistics last month showed that the number of Polish travellers visiting the country rose to more than 417,000 last year.

The first signs of inhabitants in the Vodice area go back as far as the prehistoric ages. The interior around Vodice was, and in fact still is today, a rich and fertile area where farmers could grow crops. This has been scientifically proven with archaeological discoveries of pots and weapons from the Iron Age. The settlements expanded over time, new inhabitants arrived and new cultures emerged. An important merchant route passed through this area, from Nadin to Zadar, along which many settlements sprung. The name of Vodice derives from the word meaning water (“voda” in Croatian) sources which supplied the whole area. Due to attacks from the sea there were very few houses actually built on the coast line. This however changed in the 15th and 16th centuries when huge walls, including three main forts, were constructed around the city. These were to protect the townsfolk against attacks from the Turkish invaders. However when the threat from the Turkish Empire ceased the walls were unfortunately torn down and the sto-

nes and materials were used to construct residential buildings. In fact the last tower was dismantled as late as after World War II. In 1646 a large pier was constructed and this helped to improve Vodice’s growing trade economy. As trade grew the population also expanded and it was decided a new church should be built as the older one on the hill overlooking the town was now just too small. Work started in 1746 and was finally completed three years later in 1749. In 1891 Vodice got official recognition of its size and importance and was classified as an independent municipality comprising of seven smaller boroughs. Modern day Vodice is a thriving tourist centre, in fact one of the most recognised on the whole of the Dalmatian coast, and guest from all over the world visit the resort to enjoy it’s history, beaches, cuisine, nightlife and tradition. Today the city has 9,407 inhabitants although during the summer months this number is 5 to 6 times more due to the seasonal influx of tourists. Situated only 11 kilometres from the city of Sibenik the resort is in

In the year 1999 ACI marina Vodice along with five other ACI marinas was awarded the "European Blue Flag", an environmental award, given to communities that make a special effort to keep their beaches and marinas clean and manage them with consideration for the local environment. The marina is a winner of a prestigious "European blue flag" award six years in a row now.

Vodice is certainly a destination for lovers of the sea, whether sailors, swimmers, divers or any form of

water sports, there is something for everyone. In diving centres in Vodice, you can get all the necessary information about how to dive on archaeological sites previously mentioned, or how to reach famous shipwrecks, those historical deep sea museums and enjoy in a unique experience of diving through submarine gardens of one of the most beautiful and best protected undersea areas in the world. Every year the town of Skradin holds an ethnic fair under the banner “Eco & Ethno Fair” which offers the very best in home produced products from the region. The small town of Skradin, a distinctive and romantic Dalmatian town where people are open and friendly, is situated at the point where the Krka River joins the Adriatic Sea. Ecology in its heart

There are few towns in this area that have such a rich history as Skradin. In fact as far back as the 13th century the city of Skradin had regulations for working the land in the area. In the following turbulent years the town of Skradin lost its title as a city, only to get it back again in 1997, and with the surrounding villages the population has reached 4,000 people. Cultivating

land and exploiting the riches from the depths of the river and sea have always been the main activities of the inhabitants of the Skradin area. Proof of that is revealed in findings from the age of Antiquity such as the Roman villa rustica containing the remains of wine and olive presses and tanks! Being excellent seamen, the Liburnians shipped their products even before the Roman period on vessels called liburna. It is no wonder that those activities were legally regulated as far back as in the 13th century in the already mentioned Statute of the town of Skradin. The agricultural tradition of the inhabitants of Skradin is best embodied in the renowned Bedrica family of wine merchants and viticulturists. The famous wine cellars of the Bedric family, which had their debut at the Grand Prix wine fair in the French city of Toulouse back in 1932 and has in total, recorded a total of 200 years of tradition in the wine business. Viticulture and wine production are not an exception, the same applies for olive growing, honey production, fishery – centuries of life in the rhythm of nature and the changing seasons have created an art in itself. The Day of the City is a very special day in the year when we celebrate our yesterday, today and tomorrow, I am proud that I was born exactly here in the most beautiful city in the world. I was born in Vodice, grew up here, have a family and home here. My parents and their parents were also born here. Everything in Vodice is familiar, every tree, street and face. My roots and heart are all here. I am extremely proud of my little city and my fellow citizens. Vodice has a very rich history in which with a joint goal the citizens achieved in making Vodice was it is today, through their hard work. Exactly due to this entre-

preneurial spirit in Vodice our city has a bright future. •• How will the city celebrate this special day? Although the Day of the City is celebrated on the 3rd of May, on the day of St. Jeline, the patron saint of the city, the celebrations will last the whole week. An assortment of events will occur that week including cultural and sporting events in which will participate all associations in the city as well as children from the local schools and kindergartens. The celebrations will be accompanied by music from the Kolo choir from Sibenik, Kristal Sladorana from Zupanje and Teater Licem u Lice (face to face) from Split. •• How will the celebrations of

the City of Vodice differ from previous years? In the past the Day of the City was marked only with processions and holy masses, but since those early days the program of events has become richer and longer every year. This year, due to the local elections, the official meeting of the town council will be postponed. On the main square on the 3rd of May, after the procession and holy mass, there will be a full day of cultural events. For sports lovers the activities on that day will include the final of the football tournament “Marinko Kardum” and also a hill climbing race as well as a regatta with yachts from the Optimist class, not forgetting competitions in windsurfing.

The Cathedral of st. Jacob in Sibenik The St. Jacob’s cathedral, the cathedral of Sibenik, built for over a century, is a testimony of persistency, sacrifice and belief of the generations of inhabitants of Sibenik. The cathedral dominates the city skyline for miles around and is a good point of navigation whilst in the Old City of Sibenik. By many things it is unique not only in Croatian architecture, but in Europe as well. It is entirely built of stone no other material was used in its construction. It is also unique by the connecting structure of stone slabs and ribs, with no binding material. It is also unique among renaissance churches by its trefoil front facade. Finally, it is unique by the harmony of its architecture and the row of 71 realistic sculptural portraits around

the apses. Documents preserved from the time of the building of the cathedral show evidence of contributions from the entire community in its construction, as well as from many local individuals as well, including a large number of domestic stone-dressers, builders and artisans. Probably the most important among them is Mr. Juraj Matejev Dalmatinac, who came from Zadar, and who the town of Sibenik commissioned in 1441 to take over the job of the proto-master of the cathedral of Sibenik. The cathedral and the nearby renaissance town hall, other churches, palaces, and the Prince’s Palace presently housing the County Museum, make probably the most beautiful town square of the Croatian urban heritage.«

An oasis of islands framed in a deep blue background of the Adriatic Sea »On the last day of the Creation God desired to crown His work and thus created Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath« George Bernard Shaw, 1856 - 1950 In the central part of Croatian Adriatic Sea, about 15 Nm to the west of the city of Sibenik, 7 Nm to the southwest from the island of Murter, or 15 Nm to the south from the town of Zadar, there is amazing group of islands named the Kornati archipelago. The beauty and singularity of the archipelago caused authorities in 1980 to proclaim a bigger part of the area a national park. Since then certain modifications of its borders have been made, so that nowadays Kornati National Park occupies an area of about 220 km2 (54.000 acres). There are 89 islands, islets and reefs within the area of Kornati National Park (238 km of the coastline), what makes it the most indented group of islands in the whole of the Mediterranean. The land

part of Kornati National Park covers less than 1/4 of its total area, but the values of its landscapes, the "crowns" (vertical cliffs) on the islands facing the open sea, and interesting relief structures, make this part of Kornati National Park unique. There are no permanent settlements in Kornati. Simple houses in well-protected coves such as Vruje, Kravjačica, Lavsa and others are used by land owners as temporary shelters. There are around 20 restaurants and taverns within the Kornati National Park. They offer quality domestic cuisine that mostly include seafood specialties (fish, crabs and seafood) and domestic lamb from the Kornati area. This lamb is renowned and highly sought after in Croatia due to

its distinctive flavor and quality. Some restaurants also offer “international” food for those who are not very fond of the typical Kornati cuisine. Most of the land owners are from the island of Murter. The Kornati submarine area, whose biocenosis are considered to be the richest in the Adriatic Sea, and also the magnificent geomorphology of the sea bed attracts divers from all over the world who come to enjoy endless, unforgettable submarine adventures. Diving visits to the Kornati National Park are allowed only in organized and approved diving groups. Therefore, if you intend to dive in the National Park (which we highly recommend), please contact one of the diving centers authorized to perform this activity within

the Kornati National Park. Within the Park there are seven zones set aside for diving visits. It is hard to recommend which one you should use. Croatia is among the 20 cleanest countries in the world

The US magazine Forbes on Saturday published a list of the world's cleanest countries, ranked according to an index developed by Columbia and Yale Universities, with Croatia ranking 20th on the global scale and first in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. With an Environmental Performance Index (EPI) score of 84.6 out of 100, Croatia takes 20th place on the list of the cleanest countries, which is topped by Switzerland and Scandinavian countries. Fourteen European countries are among the 20 cleanest. "Croatia recognises the value of tourism and makes clean beaches a priority. The country, which lies across the Adriatic Sea from Italy, offers visitors ample, healthy fishing stocks and freedom from waterborne disease. But the legacy of decades of communist rule endures: Soviet-era industry pumps out greenhouse gasses and particulates, causing the country's air quality to suffer. Croatia's overall biodiversity index score is just 14, vs. a stillweak 34.8 for the region," reads the Forbes article "The World's Cleanest Countries". Columbia University's Center for International Earth Science Information Network and Yale University's Center for Environmental Law and Policy developed the index to highlight the cleanest countries, and give laggards the opportunity to benchmark efforts to improve their own environments and the health of their citizens. Switzerland tops the list with an EPI score of 95.5. It is followed by

Sweden and Norway with a score of 93.1. The non-EU countries in the top 20 are Costa Rica (5), New Zealand (7) and Colombia (9). Europe scores consistently well in EPI's environmental health ranking, which measures the effects of pollution on human health. A second broad measure, ecosystem vitality, measures the health of fisheries, the amount of greenhouse gases a country pumps into the air and how well it preserves the diversity of its plants and animals. EPI researchers caution that the information used to develop the scale often comes from local sources and can be of less-than-ideal quality, especially in developing countries. They ranked 149 countries, and left the remaining 50 or so off the list for insufficient data, reads the Forbes article. The town of Tisno showed once again that is a leader in the Sibenik County in ecological matters when it held an action to clean the public areas, beaches and sea. The action entitled was held on the 18th of April from 9 o’clock in the morning till 1 o’clock in the afternoon and a large number of local people turned up to lend a hand. Divers dredged the bottom of the sea in the Tisno cannel and removed an assortment of waste materials from car tyres to plastic bottles. The whole event was livened up by the brass band “Nanditschwailera” from Germany. The results of this action will certainly help to keep Tisno’s reputation as a eco-friendly town.«

Wine Tradition The Sibenik area is famous for its tradition of wine production. It history dates from the period before the birth of Christ when vine yards were worked by the ancient Greeks and Romans. From the middle of the 15th century to the 20th century Sibenik became well known in Europe for its wine

culture. In the 1930’s sparkling wines from Sibenik were extremely popular in Paris and the Vatican. The most well known grapes from the Sibenik region are Babić, Debit, Plavina, Lasin and Maraština. The most popular spirits (rakija) which are served as an appetiser before meals are travarica and loza.

Donkeys The donkey is a symbol of Dalmatia. Without this noble, timid, stubborn and very hardworking animal life would have been very different in Dalmatia. People wouldn’t have been able to move so much stone, harvest so many grapes, make roads and paths or build so many houses, villages or towns. Men brought water by donkey, climbed hills and mountains, for people the donkey was

the key to success and hope for the future. And more importantly the donkey became man’s best friend and companion. In a sign of gratitude for this unique animal the towns of Tribunj and Primošten have both placed a statue to the donkey in the centre of the town. In Tribunj on the first Saturday in August is held the biggest and most well known “race of the donkeys” along the coast of the Adriatic.

Sibenik Children’s Festival The city of Sibenik has held a festival in the name of children since 1958. At the beginning the festival was named the Yugoslavian Children’s festival, and then in 1991 the name was changed to the International Children’s Festival. This year the festival should have marked its 50th anniversary, although in reality it was

the 48th anniversary because at the beginning the festival was held once every two years. The International Children’s Festival is a multi-medial cultural event, in fact the festival includes the best of everything for children. It is held over two weeks, from the last week of June and the first week of July.

Dalmatian Chanson The evenings of Dalmatian Chanson has been held in Sibenik since 1998. It is today the highest quality Croatian festival of Chanson. The City Hall The City Hall is located in the central city square (Trg Republike Hrvatske), formerly known as Plathei Communis. It is a very harmonious and airy Renaissance style building built from 1533-1536. The ground floor includes porch with semi-circular arches supported by columns, which was an access to the former public utilities offices. On

In December 1943, during allied air strikes, the City Hall building was completely destroyed and was restored after the war, in its original shape and appearance, and the internal area was organized and equipped in accordance to the needs of new functions.

Clean, wash and slice the squid into 3/4 inch (2 cm) wide strips. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes. Chop the garlic and parsley. Pour half the oil into an oven-proof casserole dish, spread a layer of potato and sprinkle with salt. Then spread the calamaries over the potato, sprinkle with pepper, garlic, parsley and mixed spices and cover with

the remaining potato. Sprinkle with more parsley and salt and pour the remaining oil on top. Cover (must be cooked in a covered dish so that calamaries remain juicy and require no basting) and cook in oven pre-heated to Gas Mark 7 (220 oC) for about 45 minutes. Serve with a seasonal salad.
