Featured Resident Arthur Schlosser

Arthur was born December 6, 1923 in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania, a small town 30 miles north of Johnstown. He was the youngest of four children. His father and brothers were coal miners, but Arthur had other plans for himself. After he graduated from high school he became a World War II enlistee, at the tender age of 19. He was sent to the Army Air Corps Aircraft and Engineering School in Santa Monica, California, where he learned to build and take care of the aircraft used in the war. He knew them so well, inside and out, that he taught the pilots how they worked, even though he was actually too young to fly them himself. After the war, he worked on B-25s and B40s and eventually specialized in hydraulics. He was hired by Howard Hughes in 1954 and worked for his missile program in Tucson, Arizona. He worked for Hughes for eight years, then they transferred him to its aerospace center in California.

For fifteen years he was a satellite builder with Hughes. He supervised aerospace projects, and directed the assembly of satellites and their prototypes – from tubing and metal work to riveting, instrumentation and electronics. He designed and helped launch several of the country’s first satellites. He built the Syncom satellite, the nation’s first, from rivets to launch. In 1966, he also built the Surveyor satellite, the first to make a soft landing on the moon and to transmit thousands of photos to earth. His contribution to the satellite program also includes work on the world’s largest satellite, the HS308, which was launched in February 1969. It was more than 40 feet tall, “much bigger than it needed to be.” Of all the Hughes aerospace projects he worked on, Arthur is proudest of the first Syncom satellite. “It was only 28 ¼ inches in diameter and without instrumentation it only weighed about 16 pounds. You could hold it in your hand,” he said. Arthur is very proud of his work in the aerospace program with Hughes and NASA, and if you stop by to see him, he’ll be happy to tell you about it.

Fitness Corner Eating Healthy

Eating Well As You Age Is Easier Than You Think • Focus on good carbs. Opt for whole grain nutrition (brown rice, whole wheat bread, rolled oats, barley, millet), not refined “white” products, such as white bread, white rice, or products made with white flour. • Raw equals roughage! Aim to eat at least one daily serving of your fruits and vegetables raw. This not only preserves their nutritional value, it’s an easy way to eliminate constipation. Raw fruits and veggies are loaded with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes to aid digestion. Plus, there’s no preparation involved. If you have difficulty biting or chewing, cut your apple or carrot into bite-sized pieces. Or try a green salad with grated zucchini. • Steaming is the best way to cook vegetables; it preserves nutrients. Light sautéing is next. Boiling leeches nutrients—but you can use the leftover cooking water as soup stock!

• Go lean on protein. Fish, poultry, eggs, beans, peas, nuts and tofu all count as protein, so it’s easy to vary your healthy protein choices. Try skinless turkey or chicken, or fish, baked, broiled, grilled, steamed or poached, and you’ll savor the flavor while adding healthy, low-fat, low cholesterol nutrition to your diet. Go easy on red meats, which contain saturated fat, and on salty meats such as bacon or ham. • Bone up on calcium. All dairy products are not created equal. Milk, cheese and yogurt retain their calcium content; cream cheese, cream and butter do not. As part of a healthy senior diet, choose fat-free or low fat dairy products. If you’re lactose-intolerant, consider lactose-free and lower-lactose products, such as hard cheeses and yogurt. Or, a calcium supplement might be a better way for you to meet your calcium requirement. • Choose first-rate fats. Get your “good” fats from oils such as olive oil and sunflower oil, avocados and avocado oil, nuts and seeds. • Keep it moist. In addition to drinking enough water each day, aim to consume foods with a high water content. Staying properly hydrated flushes toxins from your body, relieves constipation, helps keep your joints flexible and your mind clear. High water content foods include melons, grapes, cucumbers, onions, apples, cabbage, and, of course, soup! *Helpguide.org Gina Kemp, MA and Robert Segal

Back In MyCorner Day... Wellness This Month in History With Kathy Eslinger, R.N.

What is C. Difficile? Some of you have had the misfortune to get Clostridium difficile colitis. This is a bacteria that can cause irritation of the large intestine or the colon. The inflammation, known as colitis, can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. It may be mild or severe. You may get C. difficile if you take antibiotics. It is most common in the elderly who are taking antibiotics in hospitals or a nursing home. C. difficile can be passed from person to person by coming into direct contact with the infected person’s stool. The intestine normally contains many good bacteria that keep it healthy and does not cause disease. If you take antibiotics to kill a bacterium that does cause disease, your medicine may also kill good bacteria. This may allow C. difficile bacteria to grow in your large intestine and release harmful substances called toxins. Experts also think that, in some cases, antibiotics may also cause these toxins to be released.

Symptoms usually begin 4 to 10 days after you start taking antibiotics, but they may not develop until a few weeks after you stop taking the medication. Treatment may include another antibiotic (other than the one that caused the disease), such as Vancomycin or Metronidazole.
