Featured Resident Fay Lara

Fay was born on March 24th, 1928 in the small town of Enterprise, West Virginia. She had seven brothers and is the oldest of six girls, all born within 20 years of each other. She went to a one room school house, and her brothers and sisters made up most of the class. Mom was a housewife and father was a coal miner. They also did farming along with raising all those children. They were poor but didn’t know it. They always had a vegetable garden and nice neighbors that gave them meat they had butchered but did not need. They ate a lot of beans, fried potatoes, eggs, biscuits and gravy and apple butter that they made themselves. Some of her favorite memories are of picking berries, holidays, and fishing with her brothers. When Fay was 10 she and three of her siblings were sent to California to live with a rich Aunt, because her father could not support the entire family at the time. These times

were hard, as her Aunt was not a nice person, and treated the four of them as if they were slaves. She was never allowed to play with other children and had to go straight home after school to do chores. She had to scrub the floors, laundry, ironing and help take care of the Aunt’s rental property. They lived in Hollywood and she went to Hollywood High School. She graduated from high school on June 20, 1946 and was married the very same day at the First Methodist Church in Hollywood Calif. That’s one way to get away from a mean Aunt. She met her future husband, Ernie C. Lara when she was 17 years old. He was in the navy. One day when she was baby-sitting, her girlfriend called and said that she had two sailors that wanted to go out with them to the ice cream parlor. After they came back from the ice cream parlor, Ernest realized that he did not have his sailor hat. The other sailor hid the hat and said that he would not return it until he kissed Fay. He was playing matchmaker and it worked! Eight months after they met they were married and the day after that, they spent their honeymoon in Tucson, Arizona. Ernest continued on next page...

started working as a watchmaker there. Two years later, they started their family of four children, Charles, David, Debra and Brenda. In 1947, they were in a bad accident when she was pregnant with her first child. Her husband nearly lost his arm, and did not work for over a year while he recovered. Fay had to go to work and started working with Blue Cross – Blue Shield. That year was a very tough year for the both of them. Fay ended up working for them for the next 13 years. In January 1954 they decided to open their own business at 40th street and Indian School called Lara Jewelers. This was Fay’s favorite place to work. They had owned the store for thirty-five years when they sold the business. They worked for the new owners for three years and then decided to retire. Ernest and Fay also enjoyed their cabin in Heber, Arizona for rest and relaxation. About a year before they retired, Fay was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Her husband later fell ill with heart problems and passed away in May of 2000. Fay continued to live in their home until she moved to SVS in 2004. Fay enjoys living here and she is the biggest game player in the community. If you have a game you want to play, call her and she will be there in a heartbeat! Her favorite games at the moment are bingo, poker, dominos and she loves going to the casino.

Fitness Corner Avoiding Falls

We all need to be aware of potential environmental risks within our own home to avoid falls: • Flooring - should be dry and not heavily waxed. Avoid slipperiness and high glare. Use rubber matting, rugs with non-skid backing, and tack down loose carpet • Lighting - avoid dim lighting, and reduce glare from sunlight in rooms. Movement sensitive lights should be installed near stairs and the bathroom • Stairs - need to be well lit with a light switch at the top and bottom of the staircase. Worn stair treads should be replaced and non-slip adhesive strips placed on the edge of all steps.

• Chairs - avoid chairs with wheels. Loose legs and arms should be fixed. Ideally chair height should allow for your feet to reach the floor and your legs to be bent at a 90 degree angle • Bathroom - use rubber mats on the floor, in the shower and in the bath. Avoid door locks. If unable to stand for long periods, place a seat in the shower or bath. Medicine cabinets should be well lit with drugs clearly marked • Bedroom - lock bed wheels. Avoid loose rugs. Ideal bed height is 45cm from the mattress to the floor • Kitchen - place a rubber mat near the sink, and wear rubber soled shoes. Frequently used objects should be stored at waist height. Avoid tripod or pedestal tables • Obstacles - beware of moving the furniture, children’s toys, shoes left on the floor, grandchildren or pets playing. Ensure the pathway to the toilet is unobstructed. *Information gathered from the National Ageing Research Institute

Employee Spotlight

Meet Don Doench-Assisted Living Director Where are you from? I was born in Detroit, Michigan, reared in Indiana and moved to Arizona after living in New Mexico for 30 years. What do you do in your pastime? I tend to be a home body. I love to read and watch old movies. I am an avid golfer – playing since I was 12 years old. I have played golf all over the world. What is one thing I would like residents to know about me? I am a very passionate person concerning life, marriage, family or work. I devote my whole self into what I am involved with. What’s your favorite vacation? After selling my business, I took my wife and another couple as my guests for a 6 week vacation in Mazatlan. We had a 2 bedroom suite on the ground floor with immediate access to the water, beach and night life. It was very hard to come home. What is your favorite life lesson? While I owned my own business I was asked to sell an item to the next person that entered my establishment. I went next door and asked a lady that was dressed poorly to help me out (really to get rid of the salesman). My initial impression was that she could not afford the merchandise. She returned to my office tried on the merchandise and left me with several nice compliments about the item. Twenty minutes later, she returned with a certified check and asked if she could place an order for the item. It was one of the largest sales I ever

had. The lesson I took away was: Never prejudge; be patient and assess as much as you can before you form an opinion. What is the best thing you have ever won? I won an all expenses trip for 7 days to The Royal and Ancient Golf Course in St. Andrews Scotland. I was living in Europe and won a golf tournament in Luxembourg and that was the wining prize. What is your favorite holiday? Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday as it affords me the time to be with my family (immediate and extended). Watching parades, going to the car show, playing golf with family members, eating and giving thanks for what we have in life. Most embarrassing moment? I was President of the Chamber of Commerce in New Mexico and had to give a welcoming speech to 600 Hopi Indians that were attending a conference in our city. I got in front of a huge crowd and extended my warmest welcome to the members of the Navajo Nation. (Talk about wanting to get away)
