Featured Resident Harriet Benes

Harriet Ella Benes was born on November 25th, 1918 and just celebrated her 90th birthday! She was born in Aurora, IL to Harry and Ella Todd. Guess how they came up with her name! She was raised in Ottawa, Illinios and at the young age of 14 she started singing professionally for the Moody Bible Institute on WMBI Radio. This was the first of Harriet’s three careers. She continued to sing throughout her life until her singing voice was damaged and she had to have surgery. Harriet went to college at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. There she majored in Home Economics. After she graduated she taught just one year of Home Economics and decided it was not for her so she went back to school to get her teaching degree for kindergarten through third grade. Thus, Harriet began her second career as a teacher, which she did for 44 years.

While she was in college she met and married her first husband, Robert Funk. They had only been married a few years when she gave birth to her first son, Todd. After just 7 short years of marriage, Harriet had one of the most trying years of her life. In March of 1946, her 4 year old son died of bronchial pneumonia in his sleep. In April, her second son, Robert Jr. was born and in October her husband, Robert Sr., was killed in a tragic farming accident. Harriet leaned on her mother and family heavily that year. But, do not fret! Her story does not end here. Harriet moved to Arizona in 1957 and one year later, while teaching kindergarten, a colleague of hers was throwing a party and invited Harriet. There was a gentleman there her friend wanted Harriet to meet. At the party Harriet met and fell in love with her second husband, Charles Benes. She and Charles were happily married for 34 years. During her tenure as a kindergarten teacher there was a time when the school was only held in the morning so Harriet taught music on some afternoons. Still feeling the need to do more, she saw an advertisement on TV for the Briman School of Nursing. She enrolled and went to school on her free afternoons. continued on next page...

Before long, she graduated from nursing school and began working at a doctor’s office. This was the start of her 3rd career.

Trivia Question What state officially became one of the United States on January 3rd, 1959? Arizona Utah Wyoming Alaska Hawaii (Answer on Calendar page)

Harriet has always been close with her family. Her granddaughter, Dana, spent every summer with Charles and she. They had a trailer and often took cross-country trips. Dana works for MBNA credit cards and lives in England with her husband. Harriet’s son, Robert, a computer professional, has set up a system that allows Harriet and Dana to talk online and see each other via a web camera.

Fitness Corner

A few years ago Harriet was diagnosed with colon cancer and had to have surgery. During the surgery, she suffered a heart attack. The doctor and her family feared the worst, but you can’t count out Harriet that easily! She decided that she was going to be around to get to know her soon-to-be-born great grandchild, Ella. And Harriet is here with us today as happy and spunky as ever!

Fitness experts now feel that good old walking can be as valuable an aerobic exercise as jogging, swimming, or biking. In fact, walking may be the best form of exercise you can undertake. Walking is the oldest form of exercise known to man. Scottsdale Village Square has a regular walking group, encouraging the community to stay fit! Seventy-seven million Americans regularly walk for fitness and pleasure, reaping the following benefits:

Harriet currently volunteers once a week at the hospital putting papers together for incoming trauma patients. Could this be the start of your fourth career, Harriet?

• Enhanced weight loss • Increased energy • Improved fitness level • Decreased stress and tension • Improved muscle tone • Increased ability to perform daily activities • Decreased risk of age-related disease • Improved cardiovascular health

Walk Your Way to Fitness

The popularity of walking as a fitness activity is growing. Walking is low risk, easy to start,

and it is pretty hard to hurt yourself. Runners put three to four times their body weight every time their feet hit the ground. Walkers, by contrast, land with only one and one-half times their body weight. Walking exercises muscles all over your body, and it is actually one of the best exercises for healthy feet. Walking is great exercise for people who are in terrific shape, and it’s just as good for people in lousy shape. Virtually every cardiac rehabilitation program in America bases its exercise regimen on walking. If you are already walking- good for you! Scottsdale Village Square encourages everyone to get out and WALK!

Employee Spotlight Meet Pat Singer-Director of Activities

Where are you from? I was born in Hawaii (when it was still just a US territory). My father was in the Navy and stationed there. Even though, I consider myself a native of AZ, because my family moved here right after I was born.

What do you do in your pastime? For leisure I love reading, sewing, video games, going to the movies and camping as long as it is in RV or hotel. One thing I would like residents to know about you? Just that I really love my job, and doing whatever I can to make them happy and have fun. What’s your favorite vacation? I just came back from my favorite vacation--a week in Cancun! Had a fabulous time seeing the Mayan ruins, snorkeling, and so much more. What is your favorite life lesson? In high school I worked at a soda fountain. One day while I was washing dishes behind the counter, a very old man could not get out of his seat at the lunch counter. No one sitting around him did anything to help him. I was furious that they would just sit there and watch him struggle to get down, when I realized that I wasn’t doing anything either. Just because I was behind the counter working, didn’t mean I couldn’t go out and help him myself. So I did. I held his chair so he could get out by himself and get into his wheelchair. He was so thankful he cried, and I was a sucker for seniors from then on. So, don’t wait for others to help someone, do it yourself. What is the best thing you have ever won? One time I won $10,000--I’d only spent $3.00. That was the best! What is your favorite holiday? I don’t really have a favorite holiday. Vacation time with my grandchildren is my favorite time. Most embarrassing moment? Too many to count!
