Featured Resident Monti Perry
Monti was born April 7, 1925 in Miles City, Montana to Rasmus and Christina Monson who emigrated from Norway in 1916. She was the youngest of three a sister Irene and a brother, Ralph. She graduated from Custer County High School in 1943. After high school, she went to Helena, Montana, 350 miles from home, to attend riveting school to learn how to make airplanes. She completed the two month course and was offered a job in Bremerton, Washington, but ended up not accepting it. Instead, she and her sister moved to Arizona. Her sister had severe allergies and her doctor strongly suggested she move to Arizona to a better climate. Mother suggested that the sisters go together to support each other. Monti and her sister rode a bus all the way to Arizona, where Irene got a job as a legal secretary. On the bus ride down, they made a stop in Flagstaff. While there, she met someone at the bus station who worked at Air Research in Phoenix and said they were hiring. When they arrived in Phoenix, Monti
went there, got hired, and worked there for almost two years until the war ended and the plant closed. Monti was 20 when the plant closed, so she decided to go back to Montana for the summer as her mother was ill. When the summer was over and her mother was better, she came back to Arizona and went to beauty school to become a beautician. While going to school, she also worked at an ice cream parlor and there she met her future husband Don Green. Don was in the Marine Corp during WWII, and when he got out, he came to Arizona to live. They dated for a bit, and then married in 1947. Don went to work for a lumber company for a few years, then got his contractor’s license, and started his own business building homes in Phoenix. They had two children, Greg, who was born in 1950 and Christina, born in 1953. After twelve years of marriage they divorced. The children were only six and nine. In 1948, Air Research re-opened and recalled all prior employees, so Monti went back to work for them. She worked with them off and on for the next 20 years. Whenever they had layoffs, she would work as a beautician, so she was never without a job.

She was a single mother for five years when she met Lloyd Perry, a co-worker at Air Research. They married in November of 1965. She retired at the age of 55 in 1981 and Lloyd retired the next year. They lived in Phoenix for the next twelve years then moved to Queen Valley. Lloyd passed away in 1995. She lived in Queen Valley until June of 2006, when she moved to Scottsdale Village Square. Monti has made wonderful friends here and loves the happy hours, parties and just being happy. She says if you laugh, the world laughs with you, but if you cry, you cry alone. Monti loves it here at SVS, but she is looking forward to the time when she and her son will be able to live together in her mobile home in Queen Valley.
Fitness Corner Strength Training Update
During the past few years, research has continued to show that sensible strength training produces many health and fitness benefits. The exciting news is that in addition to confirming the positive physiological responses already discovered, key researchers have pinpointed other benefits. Researchers have discovered that strength training provides these benefits: Low-back Pain Decreases. Several years of research on strength training and back pain
2
conducted at the University of Florida have shown that strong low-back muscles are less prone to injury. A recent study by Risch (1993) found that low-back patients had significantly less back pain after 10 weeks of specific (full-range) strength exercise for the lumbar spine muscles. Arthritic Pain Decreases. According to the Tufts University Diet and Nutrition Letter (September 1994), sensible strength training may ease the pain of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This is good news, because most men and women who suffer from arthritis need strength exercise to develop stronger muscles, bones and connective tissue. (If you have arthritis, strength training could be a big help. Be sure to check with your doctor before beginning a program.) Resting Blood Pressure Decreases. Harris and Holly (1987) showed that regular strength training alone significantly reduces resting blood pressure. Westcott (1995) revealed that a combination of strength training and aerobic exercise improves blood pressure readings even more. After two months of combined exercise, program participants dropped their systolic blood pressure by five millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and their diastolic blood pressure by 3 mm Hg. Bone Mineral Density Increases. Menkes (1993) reported significant increases in the bone mineral density of the upper femur after four months of strength exercise.
Glucose Metabolism Improves. Hurley (1994) reported a 23 percent increase in glucose uptake after four months of strength training. Because poor glucose metabolism is associated with an increased risk of adult onset diabetes, improved glucose metabolism is an important benefit. Gastrointestinal Transit Time Decreases. A study by Koffler (1992) showed a 56 percent decrease in gastrointestinal transit time after three months of strength training. This finding is significant because delayed gastrointestinal transit time is related to a higher risk of colon cancer. Blood Lipid Levels Improve. Although strength training’s effect on blood lipid levels needs further research, at least two studies (Stone et al. 1982; Hurley et al. 1988) have revealed improved blood lipid profiles after several weeks of strength exercise.

Employee of the Month EOTM for January 2009: Maggie Rascon
Karen, the Director of Nursing wrote: “Maggie is dependable, honest, hard working and is always willing to go the extra mile for anyone. I can always count on her. She puts everyone before herself in her personal and professional life. She takes a special interest in all the staff members at SVS, no matter what department, and is supportive and loyal to all. She loves the residents. Many times, if I can’t find her, she is on Vista East helping to feed the residents. She has been a team player from the day I walked in the building. She is my right hand gal and I feel blessed to have her working with me. Thank you, Maggie, for everything you do for all of us here at SVS. You are a very special person and deserving of Employee of the Month.”

Back In My Day... Employee Spotlight This Month in History Meet Kathy Eslinger
Where are you from? I was born the small town of Geneva, Nebraska where my dad was the Sheriff for 20 years. So I lived in the County Courthouse. My bedroom was right by the men’s jail. Needless to say, I had an interesting childhood. Later, when I was 13 years old, we moved to Lincoln, Nebraska which is home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. And, yes, I am an avid “Go Big Red” fan. I moved to Arizona a year and a half ago and I love it! What do you do in your pastime? Well this is an area that I need to develop. I do love to go to the movies and Fashion Square Mall. I not only shop, but people watch too. I love to fish, so I do need to get a fishing license and find a good fishing hole. If you know of one, please let me know. One thing I would like residents to know about you? I am very dedicated to providing good service to them.
everything that I deprive myself of on most days and going to long lunches with friends. What is the best thing you have ever won? I sold vacuum cleaners to get myself through nursing school and was the top sales person during a promotional program. The prize was an all expense paid trip to Las Vegas. So I went with a few friends and we had a ball! The best part was that while attending a Las Vegas show I found a loose diamond on the floor of the MGM. It was a carat in size. I really did hit the jackpot! What is your favorite holiday? Valentine’s Day. It brings the love out of people. If you could be a famous person, dead or alive, who would it be? I always thought I would like to sit down with Bette Midler. I love her personality. Most embarrassing moment? Which one? I suppose I have a few because I am not afraid to be myself and say what I am thinking.
What’s your favorite vacation? I love to go to Cancun. I try to go every two years because I love the sun, beach and the beautiful water. What is your favorite life lesson? As a Nurse, one tends to do for everyone except for themselves. So I have learned to recognize when my spirit is withering and do whatever it takes to renew myself. That includes getting a fullbody massage, renting a lot of movies, eating

Improvement Update The construction on the dining room is progressing rather well. We are already well into phase two and are ahead of schedule. As most of you can see, phase one is almost finished with the new entrance into the dining area, as well as the new paved area outside of the entrance. There are plans for obtaining patio furniture that would enable families and residents to eat a meal outdoors, if they wish and weather permits. The majority of the area will be covered so as to ensure plenty of shade. Additionally, arrangements are being made to relocate the resident mailboxes adjacent to the new entrance to the dining area. This will allow the residents to secure their mail while on their way to the dining area. The Administration would like to thank every resident who has experienced any inconvenience from the remodeling and wish to thank you all for your patience and understanding. The completed project will contribute to the amenities and functionality of our beautiful campus. In the meantime, we also hope you enjoy our weekly “construction parties” hosted by the Activities Department.
