The

Library Letter News from the St. Marys Community Public Library

From our director

Strategic Plan Approved The Board of Trustees approved the Strategic Plan 2007-2009 at their March 14th Board Meeting. Four service responses were recommended by a fourteenmember community focus group. The responses include: Commons; Current Topics & Titles; Local Cultural Awareness & History; and Lifelong Learning. Input from both the Board and Staff are included in this strategic plan. With the assistance of a member of the Board of Trustees the committee developed goals, objectives and activities to fulfill each of the four service responses. For the Commons response, it was determined that the people of St. Marys will have a safe, appealing location to gather to discuss community events and to take advantage of recreational, educational, and cultural programming and materials. A few of the changes that you will see in 2007 include: installation of a diaper changing station in the public restrooms; evaluation of programs offered and making contacts for speakers; and installation of a new exterior sign on Chestnut Street. The Current Topics and Titles goal is for the people of St. Marys to have a variety of upto-date materials and programs in the formats they want to fulfill their current information and recreational information needs. Changes for this area in 2007 include: reclassification of the reference collection to make more of those items available for checking out; promotion of new materials and programs using Bookletters, a feature of the library’s website;

Summer 2007 and creating bookstore-like shelving in the audiovisual area. The people of St. Marys will be provided with programs and information for all ages that promote knowledge and understanding of cultural and community heritage is the goal for the Local Cultural Awareness and History service response. Actions taken will include: production of at least five programs for youth and three programs for young adults that highlight arts, crafts and literature of various cultures; at least three programs for adults on the topic of St. Marys history; and two displays featuring world culture or St. Marys history. Lifelong Learning is the final service response. The goal of this response is that the people of St. Marys will have available current and high demand materials and programs to enrich their personal interests and enhance their education. Activities include asking patrons what type of computer classes they would like the library to offer; providing after hours programming geared to ‘tweens, 5th and 6th graders; development of an adaptive toy area; and the installation of games on computers for those youth who are not old enough for the computer lab. I would like to thank the Focus Group, Board of Trustees and Staff who assisted with the development of this strategic plan. In order to grow we need to evaluate the present and plan for the future. I hope that you will enjoy the changes that will be coming soon to your library. Susan Heckler Pittman Library Director
