Library Letter News from the St. Marys Community Public Library

From our director

Wow! What a Year!

I

am happy to announce that we have been extremely busy meeting the educational, informational, cultural and recreational needs of the patrons we serve. Library circulation increased by 9% over 2005 statistics. We had 17% more patrons using our OPLIN databases, 8% more using our computer lab, an 8% increase of in-house use of our web page, and a 7% increase in patrons using our web page from home. Ebook online requests were up 6%. We have 8782 registered borrowers. Many of these borrowers use either interlibrary loan or resource sharing. We borrowed 17137 items from other libraries and lent 18349 items. This reflects a 9% increase in both borrowing and lending. The library staff conducted 15756 reference transactions during 2006, reflecting a 7% increase over 2005. We had 10% more patrons visit our library, and the annual meeting room use was up by 9%. We had many accomplishments in 2006. We offered some new programs – Toddler Story Time, After-hours parties for youth and young adults, and Tuesday Morning Book Club for adults. In the area of Technology, the library now offers a wireless access point for those who bring their own laptops and PDA’s. Envisionware was installed to assist patrons in scheduling their own time for the computer lab. Two computer classes were added – Basic Windows and Basic Internet. The library received a Health and Wellness Grant from Rotary District 6600 and the St. Marys Rotary Club. Many donations were made to the Library in memory of loved ones or to honor an individual.

Spring 2007 In 2007, we will continue writing and implementing our Long Range Plan. We will offer programs to feature topics in the area of local history and cultural awareness. Educational games will be added to the computers in the youth area. An adaptive toy section will be added for all youth but especially those with a disability. The audiovisual budget will be increased and in this area we will try a new marketing tool for libraries with the use of face-out shelving. As someone said in a program evaluation “We are no longer your mother’s library.” Please stop by and take advantage of all that your library has to offer. Susan Heckler Pittman Library Director
