Library Letter News from the St Marys Community Public Library

From Our Director: Long-Range Planning he Board of Trustees of the St. Marys Community Public Library voted at their May Meeting to undertake the process of Long Range Planning. The Board, the Public and the Staff will be working together to reshape library services to meet changing community needs. By developing a Long Range Plan the library will be able to provide quality services to the community for the next three to five years.

T

Rebecca Felkner, Consultant, State Library of Ohio, will be the facilitator for the planning process. She has received training in The New Planning For Results program developed by Sandra Nelson and created in partnership with the Public Library Association. Mrs. Felkner will be meeting with both a Board Focus Group and a Staff Focus Group and taking their input into the planning process. A Planning Committee, composed primarily of twelve to fifteen community members, is an advisory committee to the library staff and board and is responsible for helping the library identify community needs. One Board member and one staff member will serve on the Planning Committee. This committee will meet two times at the beginning of the process once in August and again in September for a total of four hours. The committee will be invited back for a short final meeting at the end of the process. The planning committee is also responsible for helping the library select priorities that will most effectively meet the identified community needs. The Planning Committee’s recommended service priorities will be passed onto the people who will write the plan. This committee will be responsible for developing goals, objectives, and activities and for making the resource

Summer 2006 allocation decisions required to implement the plan. The committee is comprised of the Director, two staff members and a member of the Board. The entire process will take five to six months. It is our hope that through this process the library board members, managers, and staff will develop a plan that will cause us to use our energies and resources to provide the services that matter most to you – the people of the community. Susan Heckler Pittman Library Director
