Held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar every year, this festival celebrates the Chinese community's belief that a strict diet of 'vegetables only' will purify mind and body and constitute merit-making. An exceptional fare of vegetarian food is to be found at roadside stalls especially in Phuket City. Sacred rituals are performed at all Chinese temples in Phuket City. The processions from each temple show strict vegetarians, known as devotees, ostensibly possessed by gods, piercing their tongues, cheeks and other parts of the anatomy with sharp implements. The devotees apparently feel no pain.

Boat Review

Ferretti 740: Master of Elegance Following the success of the previous model, the Ferretti 731, the new Ferretti 740 will be seen for the first time at the Genoa boat show, which runs from the 3rd to 11th October 2009. The Ferretti 740 is a yacht with a strong personality, created for an owner who wants to have spacious interiors with a decor where warm tones and expensive materials predominate – a craft with wide sun zones and innovative features like the new design of the hull windows to offer spaces bathed in natural light. This yacht leans towards a classic style but with elegant and contemporary touches. As a result of research done by the shipyard, the new Ferretti showcases ‘made in Italy’ excellence. The result is a master of elegance that cruises the sea. Exterior The external profile of the Ferretti 740 is sleek and streamlined thanks to the flowing lines of the windows that dominate the main deck. The design features a succession of sinuous curves and straight lines. In addition to the open view windows of the owner’s cabin, two new windows have been added to the hull forward to enhance the on-board experience by making excellent use of natural light. On the stern spoiler there’s a comfortable sofa-bench with electro-hydraulic adjustment. The cockpit, with teak floor, is furnished with a sofa and a large table and chairs. To port, the stairs give access to the flying bridge, where the pilot station has been placed well back, and in a central position to give a broad view for navigation and piloting of the yacht. The pilot seat revolves through 360°, allowing the owner to turn and share relaxing moments with his guests, seated in the U-shaped dinette behind. A large table and grill area complete the external living zone. The Ferretti 740 is also available in a hard top version. Opening and closing of the bimini top, is then electrically powered. Main Deck The wide salon of the Ferretti 740 is bathed in natural light and offers a cosy atmosphere created by the bleached walnut timber and the texture of the materials selected for the furniture, which are used for the first time on board a Ferretti yacht. The open-plan interior has two separate areas – living and dining – keeping a harmonious continuity of space. To port, a wide L-shaped sofa and a comfortable armchair are positioned around a low table. To starboard, there’s a pop-up TV and an additional sofa for

16

three and the stairs to the flying bridge. The dining area – separated from the living area by careful furniture placement, features a tempered glass table and chairs for eight guests. The dining zone opens on to an area that connects galley, pilothouse, the exterior and the lower deck, giving access for the crew. The galley is located in a strategic position between the dining area and the pilot house, so the crew can go about their tasks without disturbing the guests’ privacy. The pilot house is located forward with dinette/chart zone and extendable table. On the lower deck, the Ferretti 740 cabins are distinguished by beautiful detailing. Bulkheads and walls are covered in light-coloured fabric which enhance the window proportions – an elegant solution. All cabins have private en-suite bathrooms. The full-beam owner’s suite is located in the centre of the boat, with walkin wardrobe and bathroom and a wide semi-circular shower, which has a wonderful view of the sea through the panoramic window. The VIP cabin is forward, bathed in light from the newly designed windows. The two guest cabins also feature large windows and lie to port and starboard.

Interior Decor The timeless elegance of the Ferretti 740 comes from the perfect balance between a functional design and the use of the finest materials to create warmth, light and ultimate liveability. The very lightly grained bleached walnut carpentry makes the atmosphere warm, comfortable and elegant. The interior is highlighted by colour contrasts of decorative details. The ceiling panels are made with natural textiles, leather is used for the bed-heads and the doors are covered in a specially created blend of fibres. Motorization and Performance The Ferretti 740 comes with twin MAN 1360HP or twin MAN 1550HP engine packages. Both offer speeds in excess of 30 knots. JAMES BOND Island KOH PHING KAN (JAMES BOND ISLAND) Made famous by the filming of the James Bond movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”, this island is now a major tourist attraction, visited by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people daily.

a stunning lagoon and some interesting rock formations, though it is no more impressive than many other islands in the area which the day tours ignore. Scores of food and souvenirs vendors come from Koh Pan Yi to set up stalls on the island during the day. A 200 baht per person fee is levied by the Park Rangers when going ashore.

Most come by bus then longtail boat from Phang Nga, so it is best visited before 10:30 am or in the late afternoon, assuming you want to avoid the crowds. Koh Phing Kan has

The best anchorage in this group is found in the channel between Koh Raya Ring and Koh Daeng Yai. This is an exceptionally beautiful place to awaken in the morning, when sunlight strikes the sheer rock cliffs of Daeng Yai. The anchorage can be approached either from the south, via the channel formed by Koh Yang and Koh Daeng Yai, or from the southeast, passing east of Koh Yang, distinctive due its high, thin column of rock, visible from far south. There is a convenient transit approaching from the south, lining up Koh Lolo and Koh Khai to avoid the sand bars. Good holding is available on a muddy bottom in 5-8 metres. The sandbank east of the anchorage is very shallow and almost dries at low tide. There is a current of up to 2 knots in the channel, strongest at ebb tide. BILL O’LEARY

This is a delightful, well-sheltered anchorage on a small bay facing south with good holding on a muddy bottom in 4-5 metres. Approach from the deep channel on an easterly heading, taking care to avoid the shallow bank approximately 600 metres south of the anchorage which often has a bamboo stake to show its position. There is a small community of thatched houses on the beach, and a restaurant where coconuts, fish, crabs or prawns can often be bought from the villagers who maintain temporary fishing houses here.

The lagoon on the north side of Koh Phing Kan can be entered by dinghy at high tide; otherwise access is possible by dinghy at most tides via the jetty on the southwest side.

Again, if moving north from here, beware of the rock that lurks beneath the surface at all tides in the passage between Koh Yang and Koh Daeng Yai (see chart).

Marketing Koh Som a brand new Paradise Photos from www.helicam.asia

Left: Santos Asano (Marketing Director Orange Tree Island Co Ltd) alongside Helicam crew in Samui

Marketing Director Santos Asano from Orange Tree Island Co., Ltd set out for a Helicam mission to photograph the all new Shores Project that was about to undergo construction. The two main objectives were to capture imagery to be used for exterior 3D renderings of the property and classic key marketing shots showing the beautiful island destination. Hugh Kingsley Heath, Engineer and Design Consultant, had predetermined specific angles for the Helicam to photograph allowing the computer illustrations to be seamlessly integrated with the real photographic images. The Shores Koh Som The Shores is a Luxury Residential project located on the beautiful private island of Koh Som. Situated only 10 minutes from Samui’s International Airport, Koh Som offers an unrivalled 360 degree private island experience with dramatic sunset and sunrise views.

Helicam helicopter overview of the island

The total property area for development is 12.64 rai or 20,219 sqm. The island is a stunning property with a diverse range of fauna and landscapes including 460 metres of private beach front, forest land, coconut grove and exhilarating rocky shores. No cars and just a small footprint of people over the years have allowed Koh Som to benefit from the evolution of its natural surroundings. Koh Som is arguably one of the best kept secrets in all of Thailand.

Marriage Made in Heaven. Frank Sinatra famously crooned that love and marriage, “go together like a horse and carriage.” Unfortunately, the sacred institution has taken a bit of a bashing since Frank articulated this profound observation in the Sands casino in Las Vegas, which is not far from Reno, famous for ‘quickie’ divorces.

24

In the UK, nearly fifty per cent of marriages end in divorce within five years. Indeed a significant proportion of young couples are now choosing to eschew the arrangement entirely, electing rather to live in what earlier generations called, with a lascivious wink, ‘sin’. The icing it seems is right off the wedding cake.

time (the triumph of optimism over realism) may recall the agony of that excruciating ritual, and not wish to repeat it. Then, of course, with the world facing financial doom and gloom, the fact is that newlyweds of whatever stripe, have better things to do with their money – like going on holiday, perhaps.

One of the first casualties of this change in social mores is, of course, the traditional ‘white wedding in June’, followed by a slapup bean feast for all in the TA hall. Those marrying for the second

So let’s take a look at current wedding costs in the UK. The average price of a ceremony and reception (this is the average, mind you) is in the region of £20,000. Did you know that a wedding cake alone can now tip the scales at a thousand quid? Then you’ve got more hands held out – flowers, choir, wedding gown, bridesmaids, taxis and on and on – the list is endless.

www.windowonlifestyle.com

Feature: Weddings in Paradise

And for what, exactly? The bride and groom are bit players in a tragic comedy dominated by others. The reception allows feuding relatives to re-visit past schisms, whilst at the same time knocking back your vintage champagne at 40 quid a bottle. At the end of it, all there’s left to do, is pick the rice out of your ears, untie the tin cans from the back of the rental limo and count the cost, of course. There’s got to be a better way. Many Brits are now choosing to tie the knot in more congenial surroundings, far removed from their extended families and Aunt Agnes’ insatiable thirst for gin. We talked to the Laguna hotel people here in Phuket. Like most units in the group, Laguna Phuket offers a combined marriage and honeymoon package in surroundings which are just not available in the ‘sceptred isle’. Without wishing to give a detailed price list rest assured, the actual cost of the ceremony is a fraction of what it would be in Europe. As for the hotel and airfares – well you’re planning to go on honeymoon anyway, aren’t you? In addition, in these times of reduced occupancies, there are all sorts of special offers and promotions, which hotels like Laguna would wish to press upon you. Moreover, it’s not just the ‘dollars and cents’ side of it. There’s the quality of the arrangements.

the island has got much more to offer than superb beaches and luxury hotels. There can be no better way of starting married life than a round of golf at one of the island’s splendid courses! If you fancy a bit of shopping then we’ve got world-class department stores and trendy boutiques by the dozen. Why not take a trip round the bay in an open long-tail boat? If you’ve got the energy there’s everything from whitewater rafting to Muay Thai gyms. You like Thai cuisine? The little woman can even do a short training course on the basics. “Splendid idea,” I here you say. Well, there you have it. There’s an old saying that marriages that start well, last long. The choice is up to you. The Registry Office, Aunt Agnes and a week’s ‘B & B’ in Bognor – or Paradise. Tough call. Photos and story from Laguna Phuket Website: www.lagunaphuketweddings.com

Laguna’s fully air-conditioned, glass-walled chapel is an exquisite gem nestling on the lake shore. The couple arrives by boat, everything is personalised and there’s no time constraints to worry you. Sparkling wine, flowers, the photographer and a candlelit dinner-for-two afterwards are all included. Dress informality is the order of the day. Rather than stuffy satins and starched collars, be comfortable in light cottons and silks for her and linen for him. Leave the tie at home. After the great day, Laguna Phuket can offer the newlyweds fivestar accommodation and superb cuisine. The hotel is situated amid 1,000 acres of parkland dotted with scenic lakes and there’s three kilometres of stunning white sandy beach. Resisting the temptation to indulge in any smutty honeymoon jokes, we’ll only mention that if you’re here for a couple of weeks,

People Profile

Peter Komposch For most visitors the face of Phuket which they remember is their hotel. A bad experience can spoil an otherwise excellent holiday. This month we talk to Peter Komposch, an expert who has made a career out of delivering what the brochures promise. Let’s here what he has to say. Where are you from originally? Austria. What made you decide to come and live here? I’ve always been interested in Asian people and culture so when I got job offered from Dusit, I took the opportunity and left my job in Jamaica to move here in 2007. How did you get into the hotel industry? I have spent almost 30 years in the hospitality industry. After graduating from a hotel college in Austria, I worked my way up and became an Executive Chef. During those times, I also worked on an 80-foot yacht and sailed around the world for a year and a half. After coming back from the long trip, I went to Cornell University in the States before starting as Food & Beverages Director at Hyatt Regency, Maui, Hawaii. Then I became General Manager at El Dorado Park Hotel in Vienna, Austria. Three years later, I moved back to California to become vice president of the famous Highlands Inn in Carmel. During this time I was also responsible for two other hotels under the same umbrella. After that I moved to Bermuda as Vice President and General Manager at The Princess Hotel where I stayed for 10 years. Throughout my career, I not only met World famous celebrities such as Clint Eastwood, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman, but also President Nixon, President George Bush, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Princess Diana, Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia, King Fahd and the current Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton. I was also nominated twice as General Manager of the Year for the Carabic area. Please tell us about your job. How do you go about running a huge fivestar hotel? It’s very interesting and at the same time, challenging. You’ve got to have great discipline and a strong work ethic and enjoy what you’re doing. I’ve learned that if you approach the Thai staff in the right way they’ll do their very best for you.

What kind of car do you drive? I run a Toyota Fortuner. What do you like most about living in Phuket? I like the people, the fusion of cultures, the ocean and the golf courses. A great place to live.

Because of the current economic crisis, the focus on cashflow has become even more important. This is the time for hotels to use their revenue management skills and technology to offer flexible rates, without being seen to be giving away discounts.

How old are you? 60 years old.

During this time, it’s a essential to know how to deal with your employees. When times are hard it’s crucially important to motivate and train them and provide them with job security so they’re able to focus on delivering the quality of service which our guests deserve.

How do you spend time together? We enjoy boating, sailing, golfing, skiing and travelling. I love to enjoy good food and good wine.

What’s the secret? You’ve got to be straightforward in every thing you do. The leader has to motivate, but this can only be achieved if he’s a team player who sets clear objectives, and supports as well as directs. It’s obviously important to be able to supply the level of service that discriminating customers want and then deliver a bit more on top. As you can see, I’ve been in the hotel business for many years all over the world and the main thing I’ve learnt is that luxurious premises, comprehensive facilities and superb cuisine are all important, but what makes or breaks any hotel is the performance of the staff. A hotel is a living, breathing organism. However, it’s also a business. The boss must be achievement-oriented and focused on the bottom line. There’s obviously got to be a lot of pressure and stress in all this. How do you cope? As I say, you’ve got to enjoy what you’re doing, but for me the secret to survival is to be able to relax with my family and play sport whenever I get the chance.

30

Whereabouts do you live in Phuket? The Laguna Town Home development. It’s very secure. The Laguna area is a really great place to live. It’s close to the beach and has some first-class retaurants. It’s very quiet, clean and of course, it’s close to where I work.

How about your family? I’m married with two grown-up children. My wife is living with me here.

Do you like Thai food? Yes, I do. Tom Yam Goong is my favourite dish. The person who has the most influenced you? Heinz E. W. Simonitsch is my idol. He is a self-made man who started as a waiter and became one of the owners of the famous Half Moon Hotel in Jamaica as well as the Grand Hotel in Lienz. Heinz was all about the accomplishment, a strong leader, a team player who took satisfaction in seeing the people around him excel. He was very much involved with the guests. Entertain them and make sure they and their family would return for generations to come. Are you involved in any associations? Yes, I am a member of Rotary, Skål, La Chain des Rotisseurs and Thai-Austrian Society. 'Location, location, location' as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it. Baan Rim Pa has become one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff, with teak floors and the constant swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket. Situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence seven years in succession.

Patong Seafood

International

Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant was the first seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained. The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the finest selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai delicacies to perfection. The first thing that you will notice are the friendly staff. The smiles, the attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.

LIM's Restaurant & NINE Lounge and Bar

Thai

LIM’s at Kalim Bay is an elegant custom-designed restaurant and a gallery of bold, very abstract art, built on a tropical hillside garden beside one of Phuket’s few natural rivers. Call it a hidden treasure. LIM’s has special offerings of generous portions that combine interesting textures and tastes. There’s a pomelo salad with shrimp that has a fresh, very clean taste. The slices of marinated duck breast rolled in cucumber are very light and match either the Australian or New Zealand red or white wines offered on the menu. Traditional, popular curries can be found on the menu with large king prawns, chicken or duck and there’s a section for vegetarians.

Baluchi is the only award winning Indian restaurant on the island, serving authentic Indian cuisine using original ingredients imported from India. Karon is open 15:00 to 23:30 except Saturdays.

Along with NINE Lounge and Bar, this is a restaurant to relax in, to take your time between courses and enjoy the company of your dinner companions. Until now, the pleasure of an evening at LIM’s, a favourite of Thai and expat residents, has spread mostly by discreet word of mouth as the chosen elegant hideaway for the discerning diner. Looking for a break from the tourist spots on Phuket’s west coast – and the best pizza on the island? Follow the locals to Salvatore’s, a rustic 'trattoria' in Phuket Town. Salvatore offers traditional Italian cuisine using only the finest fresh ingredients, such as linguini alla bottarga, sea bass in salt crust, gnocchi with fresh sausage and pizza baked in a wood-burning oven. Other specialties are created with local shellfish, like mouth-watering lobster ravioli and fettucini with crab. Start with the bruschetta, with delicately skinned tomatoes and fresh herbs and beef carpaccio with olive oil. The food is prepared under the careful eye of the Sardinian executive chef and owner, Salvatore Cossu, a fixture on Phuket’s restaurant scene for his cooking skills. He personally shops for the vegetables and fish in local markets. The bread is baked daily; the pastas and sausages are home-made. Ask him about daily food specials as well as wine suggestions. Salvatore offers about 60 labels, including Sardinian wines. The service is warm and the ambience is friendly. But the real star is the food.

About Chef Indrajit Originally from Bombay, India, Chef Indrajit was drawn to European food early in his career, especially its presentation and texture. At an Oberoi hotel in India, he opened the Italian restaurant Frangipani, after having flown to Italy to study Italian cuisine for a couple of months. Then the Anantara hotel group tasked him with opening an Italian restaurant in the Maldives. While there, he learned many marvelous and wonderful ways to use tuna including tuna curry for breakfast and tuna spring rolls for afternoon snacks. In St. Lucia, he learned how to prepare Creole food such as breadfruit and Caribbean chicken wings. Then in Djibouti he learned how to prepare Afro-Arabic food. Indrajit is known for using different cooking techniques and influences in his menu. For example, he prepares sous vide (vacuum-packed) chicken, a classical French dish with rendang sauce from Indonesia – a European cooking style with an Asian flavour. He also likes to use trios and quattros, multiple variations of the same food: lamb chops, lamb loins and lamb sauce are a good example of the former while steamed, pan-fried, grilled and broiled tuna are good examples of the latter. Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival Ea year, at this time the area around Phuket’s Fresh Market becomes congested Each w with food stalls and everywhere is festooned with red lanterns and Chinese dragons, all centred on the Jui Tui shrine. One of the fascinating aspects of Phuket’s cultural traditions is the complex fusion of Chinese religious beliefs, with those of the original inhabitants of the island. It all began in the early 1900's when tin ore was discovered in the Kathu area and hundreds of Hokkien Chinese were drafted in to do the mining. They either brought their families with them or intermarried with the locals. A thriving community blossomed, and in 1825 the Governor Praya Jerm moved the capital town from Ta Reua to Kathu. The Chinese community had such critical mass that an itinerant Chinese opera company visited to entertain them. Here the story gets a little confused but basically the whole area was struck by a major epidemic and almost everybody except the opera players became sick. Following their beliefs, the players had stuck to their religious calendar, which at this time of year required that they observe a strict vegetarian diet and offered prayers to two Chinese gods, Kiew Ong Tai and Yok Ong Sone Teh. The residents attributed their invulnerability to these religious observances.

40

An alternative explanation may be that since Kathu was a swampy jungle and it was the time of the monsoon rains, the visitors may have introduced a malarial strain to which they themselves were immune, to the local mosquitoes which thrived in the damp conditions. When the rains stopped the insects’ breeding ponds disappeared and the epidemic abated naturally. Be that as it may. The following year, the Haio Lan and Lian Tui regalia and sacred scripts were brought from China. When this precious cargo arrived at Bang Niao, the whole community went there to welcome the ship. The tradition of processions was thus born.

Feature : Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival

If you wish to practise a strict observance during the festival, here are the ‘rules’: • • • • • • • • •

Maintain maximum body hygiene Use specified kitchen utensils only for the festival Dress in white or in very light colours Behave yourself: physically and mentally Abstain from eating meat, fish, eggs and milk No sexual intercourse Stay away from alcoholic beverages and tobacco People in mourning should not attend any ceremonies Pregnant women should not attend any ceremony

On the first night of the ninth lunar month (October the 20th in the Christian calendar), the sacred ten-metre lantern pole is raised to facilitate the arrival of the gods, and at midnight, nine lanterns are suspended, one for each god. In a slightly anomalous add-on, the Hindu god Shiva is also believed to be present, and just to be on the safe side, offerings are made to Lam Tao and Pak Tao. The festival then continues for nine more days with much burning of incense, banging of drums and letting off of fireworks to ward off evil spirits. One of the strange and even controversial aspects of the various processions (see the timetable below) is the

activities of the Ma Song or ‘possessed horses’. These religious zealots transform themselves into a trancelike state and perform acts of mortification which range from climbing ladders with steel blades for rungs, walking across red hot coals and immersing themselves in hot oil. In a further rather gruesome practise, adherents pierce their faces and tongues with everything from skewers to bicycle spokes. Oddly enough, this self mutilation results in little bleeding or subsequent scarring. Stranger than fiction. However it’s not for the queasy so it’s probably best not to bring the kids! For most, however, the festival isn’t so fraught. Many restaurants and stalls all over the island will fly yellow banners decorated with red script, proclaiming that they are offering authentic vegetarian dishes, and they are delicious. Somehow the cooks manage to prepare dishes which are just as tasty as the normal fare which includes meat.

Spa

The Royal Spa To experience The Royal Spa is to feel the true beauty of nature and reflect on the power of body, mind and spiritual connections.

The Royal Spa and Health Club In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fill the air, the being is enticed into a flowing stillness of body and mind. The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club offers a distinctly personal experience. Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound effect, stilling the mind and easing the body. Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff, and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure. All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly offers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we offer 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Lemongrass House To visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products. Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced handblended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils. “Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Sukko Cultural Spa Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind. Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on. A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be. I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but firmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat! Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and effective art of selfdefense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities. Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

Perfect for the active at heart and guaranteed to enliven and awaken, with Herbal Steam and Siam Aroma Therapy Massage. Finding a spa in Patong is easy. But if you want first-class tropical treatments in a superb beachfront setting, your choice is very limited. Fortunately, the newly-opened Swasana Spa at Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort & Spa, provides the perfect answer. With two luxurious treatment rooms for couples, complete with private steam room and oversize twin Jacuzzi, one single treatment rooms and two beachfront Thai Massage rooms, Swasana Spa is unique in Patong – blending sublime treatments with a spectacular beachside location. Whether you’re suffering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for a slice of tropical relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way to start. My journey began with a Herbal Steam treatment in the aromatic steam room. Great for cleaning the pores and clearing the mind. Then out of the steam into the warm Jacuzzi for two, sipping a cool ginger tea while nature’s healing power eases away aches and stress. Already beginning to relax, I moved on to the Swasana Salt Scrub, the spa’s signature body treatment. My 2 therapists started with a gentle scrub, using tropical salt and tamarind to remove the dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling smooth and silky. Gearing up the sense of total relaxation, and gearing down even further my stress levels, I next experienced the signature massage – a combination of Lomi-Lomi and Aromatherapy techniques and principles. Lomi Lomi, also called ‘Loving Hands’, derives from ancient Polynesian massage using long continuous, flowing strokes to get deeply into tired muscles. Aromatherapy, using essential oils to stimulate or relax, is the perfect complement. While my therapists’ hands worked their magic on my body, I felt I had left all my worldly cares and tension behind. Location Patong Beach

By now in sensory heaven, the Sawasana angels prepared me for a Rejuvenating Anti-Stress Facial. A blend of facial massage with natural creams, this treatment cleansed and rejuvenated my skin and facial muscles. With all my senses heightened, I detected the fragrance of guava fruit – good enough to eat, but alas just one of the natural ingredients in the creams my therapist was using. This one is a must for anyone thinking of having a ‘face lift’!

Phuket International Airport. Photo from Wikipedia.org.

Racking up Airline Seat Capacity The seat capacity of airlines flying into Phuket International Airport is increasing so fast it’s hard to keep up, but according to a rough estimate of new services announced by just three airlines for the 2009 high season, it will increase by something of the order of 8,500 to 9,000 extra passengers per week. This number has to be a guesstimate because of the rapidly changing landscape. It’s based on announcements of new services by V Australia (Sydney, Australia) Thai AirAsia (Kuala Lumpur/Bangkok) and Jetstar (Melbourne, Australia). The calculation is based on the types of aircraft each airline has said they’ll employ and assumes 80% loading for each inbound flight. Following through on these calculations, the high season arrivals for just these three airlines could look something like this: Commencing 22nd November, V Australia (the Richard Branson backed long-haul offshoot of the Australian budget carrier Virgin Blue) will fly twiceweekly direct flights from Brisbane to Phuket. From 3rd December, they’ll operate direct flights once a week from Melbourne. They’ll use Boeing 777300ER long range aircraft on both routes. Each aircraft can accommodate 361 passengers. With a load factor of 80%, that works out to around 866 incoming passengers a week. Starting 15th December, Jetstar will operate Airbus A330-200 services daily from Singapore and three flights a week from Sydney and Melbourne. That represents a maximum capacity of 4,848. Again, assuming a load factor of 80%, this will translate to 4,848 arrivals.

Thai Air Asia announced in August that it intends to develop its Phuket operation into a major hub servicing cities like Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bali, Ho Chi Minh City and Chiang Mai. No flight frequency was announced at the time. However, let us assume that they operate at least flights three times a week from each of these cities. Using the same assumptions as above, this translates to an additional 2,592 passengers. Of course this data on extra flights relates to only three airlines. Thai Airways has already resumed its twice-weekly Tokyo to Phuket flights since last July. They’re using Boeing 777-300s which have a 303 seat maximum capacity. Airlines also come and go, some permanently, some temporarily. Fortunately, Nok Air and One-Two-Go, two Thai budget carriers resumed flights during the year after suspending services, the former because of economic problems and the latter due to regulatory issues, which were subsequently overcome. Firefly, a Subang-based Malaysian airline, started services mid-year, briefly suspended them, and then resumed services. Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur, and Dragonair from Hong Kong have continued their services. One of the most interesting aspects of the upcoming high season will be the number of charter flights flying into Phuket. Last year the number remained fairly constant at around 14 per week despite the recession. It’s to be hoped that charter operators like SkyStar Airways, Transaero Airlines, Russia; Smart Wings, MyTravel Airways and Corsair, Denmark; Edelweiss Air, Switzerland; Novair, Sweden; TUIFly Nordic, Norway; LTU and Condor Flugdienst, Germany; Air Europa Lineas Aereas, Finland; SkyStar, Korea; Blue Panorama Airlines, Italy and XL France, Belgium will continue to service the island. Most of these airlines come from high-end European tourist sources such as Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Russia, Italy and Finland. They represent a considerable level of business for the island and many hotel operators rely on them to boost their occupancies. Indeed, without the facilitation of cheap and plentiful air travel, Phuket’s tourism industry would not exist to anything like the extent that it does today. It appears the lure of Phuket as a prime destination remains remarkably enduring, compared even to its closest competitors like Bali in Indonesia.

Phuket Resort Property Overview Phuket, and its surrounding areas, has become one of Thailand’s best-established markets for hotel, villa, condominium and resort-related businesses. Although demand has slowed over the last 18 months, new developments continue to proliferate across the island. In geographical terms, development zones in Phuket can be broadly divided into five areas – north, west, south, east and inland. With high concentrations of villa development and a resulting shortage of developable sites in the west, the most recent construction has been concentrated in the north, east and southern areas. The east of the Island provides opportunities for marine-related developments and tourism. Some villa developments there, such as The Cape and The Bay have been effectively marketed internationally. It’s anticipated that this area will begin to see more varied development in the next few years in response to the demand from both clients and investors.

According to Thai law, foreigners can purchase up to 49% of the saleable area in any freehold condominium project. Eligible foreigners include: • those with residence permits • those granted permission to enter the Kingdom under the Investment Promotion Act as investors in a limited company more than 49% owned by aliens.

Generally, In terms of unit types in all resort locations, two-bedroom configurations comprise the largest proportion, already constructed or currently being built. This design is well-suited to meet the demand for holiday accommodation. Increasingly, such properties are also being purchased on a ‘buy-to-rent’ basis.

• foreign juristic persons with Investment Promotion Certificates

The beauty of the beaches in Thailand and the price of land, which internationally is still perceived as reasonably good value for money, continue to be strong attractions for buyers wishing to invest in a holiday residence or second home. Tourism related opportunities will, of course, continue to be the mainstay of Phuket’s real estate market, for many years to come. The island is now established as a major international holiday destination. With a growing number of repeat and new tourist arrivals year-on-year, opportunities will continue to exist for all segments of the hotel industry. In the low-end sector, there will always be student and backpacker tourism, as Phuket is recognised as a base for Andaman Sea island hopping. The midrange market segment will see renewed growth once homeland job security is restored. The top end of the market will continue to experience strong demand attributable to the diversification and greater financial stability of the

• foreign individuals or juristic persons remitting foreign currency into the Kingdom for the purchase of a condominium unit. The remaining 51% of the condominium area must be sold either to Thai nationals or Thai corporations. In some cases, foreigners who are shareholders in legally defined Thai companies are able to acquire the Thai ownership quota in condominium projects. To avoid complications with this issue, many projects in Phuket offer condominiums on a long-term lease basis for a period of 30 years, which can thereafter be extended for two additional 30year lease periods. This amounts to a 90-year lease. These laws are all well known now and generally accepted in the marketplace. It’s always a good thing for developers to ensure that their sales and purchase agreements are very clear, and are understood by the buyers. The developer’s sales staff should therefore be well-versed in the application of this legislation. A new breed of developers?

We’ve recently seen an increase in both foreign and domestic developers who have adopted a new strategy of selling to the domestic as well as the foreign market. This is already a feature in other resort destinations like Hua Hin and Pattaya. Projects with prices per square metre ranging from THB 70,000 to THB 85,000 are becoming more popular. They offer the same common facilities as developments that were previously built at a higher cost. If the project has good rental programs and is to be managed by a respected service provider, Thai investors will see it as a good choice.

Feature

Pensions Part 2 A SIPP is a UK-registered Pension Scheme and whereas QROPS is suitable for larger pension transfers, a SIPP is better for smaller amounts, as it tends to be cheaper to set up. The rules are not dissimilar and like QROPS’s, SIPP’s can be used to concentrate all your frozen UK pensions into one arrangement including protected rights. Just like QROPS, you never need to purchase an annuity and there are tax benefits on succession.

Last month I wrote about retirement income in general but then concentrated on Qualifying Offshore Recognised Pension Schemes (QROPS). This month I want to tell you more about Self Invested Pension Plans (SIPP) and preparing to invest for your retirement. I can’t stress strongly enough the importance of having a decent level of income at this time of life. Those of you who have planned and saved for your retirement have ensured that your standard of living will be maintained. On the other hand, it goes without saying that those who don’t plan and save will not be in a position to enjoy the same lifestyle as those who have. Please look at the pyramid and decide where you want to be at 65.

Whatever your age the best time to start saving for your retirement is now as the cost of delay can have a devastating effect on the size of your pension pot. There are many Insurance companies who market offshore pensions denominated in Sterling, Euro and US Dollars, which are suitable for all nationalities. Most have a minimum commencement contribution of only 150 US$ or currency equivalent per month, so are very affordable. These retirement schemes have many benefits and can provide you with a simple way to commence saving. Basically they are “dressed up” as insurance policies and being domiciled offshore, grow free of taxes.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE? The graphic story of 100 people aged 25 and 40 years later at retirement

So money builds up tax-free and if need be, the whole pot can be taken as a tax-free lump sum on retirement. If you were to die before retirement, then 101% of the value of the fund at that time would be paid as a lump sum to your beneficiaries. Most companies have special deals at the moment, wherein you receive an enhanced allocation by way of a contribution from the company, which will at least match your own. Saving for your retirement via a monthly investment can be very advantageous, as you’ll benefit from unit cost averaging over the longer term. The following illustration shows all the major stock market declines over the past 26 years. You’ll notice that in every case the market has always bounced back and equity investments have out-performed money market investments, over the longer term. Not only that, but savers investing in regular savings plans including pension plans will have enjoyed the benefits of unit cost averaging by purchasing many more units with their monthly contributions when the market has dipped.

Feature: Pensions Part 2 The bigger picture The case for investing in equities Taking into account the effects of any short term volatility, the case for investing in equities remains as strong today as it has ever been for those investors with a long-term investment horizon. Over the last 25 years, an investment in the S&P 500 would have grown to almost 20 times its original value.

Things to do in Phuket Phuket has plenty to keep you entertained during a visit. Here’s another set of suggestions. We leave the choice to you.

Surfing The good news for surf lovers is that surfing in Phuket is great. The waves at most of the beaches are predictable and fun to ride during this season, so even if you are beginner you can find plenty of great beaches like Kalim, Kata, Karon, Patong and Nai Harn to hone your skills. These beaches have become popular surfing destinations and now offer surf shops and tuition centres for all skill levels.

Banana Boat Another alternative for enjoyment with a group of friends is the banana boat. This rubber boat is yellow and shaped like a banana, (Okay, Okay! Maybe some people might not know this.) can carry a maximum of five people and is towed behind a jet ski, which swerves and jinks through the waves. It’s a bit like aquatic bronco-busting – the clever bit is staying on. Of course eventually everybody does get a dunking and getting back on is all part of the fun. There are several operators on Patong Beach and prices start from 2,000 baht.

Dinopark Mini-golf The young and young-at-heart will enjoy the challenge of this fun course located in a Jurassic Theme Park complete with dinosaurs and an active volcano. It’s located in Kata on the Karon Road. For more information go to www.dinopark.com.

62

Bungy Jump If the idea of diving head first off a platform 54 metres above the ground sets your pulses racing, then bungy jumping is just what the doctor ordered. You can jump alone or in the company of a friend and the jump can be set up so that you actually touch the water. Adrenalin junkies apply below! There are two Jumps in Phuket: Jungle Bungy Jump located in Kathu, a 5 minute drive from Patong Beach. Open: Daily 9am - 6pm, Tel: 0 7632 1351. World Bungy Jump on Soi Kepsup 2, Patong Beach. Open: Daily 10am - 7pm. Tel: 0 7634 5185.

Phuket's View Points If you are looking for a change from the beach, why not check out the views from Phuket’s hilltop view points? Laem (Cape) Phrom Thep is the most popular and largest of all the view points. It is a headland on the extreme southern end of Phuket about 19 kilometres from Phuket City. Close to Laem Phrom Thep is Windmill View Point. It can be found in the south of Phuket between Nai Harn and Promthep. As the name would suggest the hilltop boasts a modern windmill – the only one on

www.windowonlifestyle.com

Useful info : Things to do in Phuket the island. Three-beach View Point is a very tastefully developed facility with a Thai-style sala which offers superb views on several levels. From this point Kata Noi, Kata and Karon Beaches can be seen, and out to sea is Koh Poo Island. It is one of the island's best views. This is a great way to experience magnificent vistas and cool breezes. Most view points have refreshments available. Don’t forget your camera.

Big Buddha If you look southwards from Wat Chalong, the skyline is dominated by an enormous statue of the Lord Buddha. Forty-five metres high and finished in white marble, it is the largest such image in Thailand. Up close it is massively impressive and the elevated site offers panoramic

views of the island. The shrine is still a work-in-progress but the Buddha image is ninety-five per cent complete and the construction scaffolding has now been removed. A museum is planned and there is even talk of constructing a cable-car system from Patong to the site.

Wat Chalong Buddhism is overwhelmingly the dominant religion of Thailand, practised by at least 90% of the population. Temples (known locally as Wats) are where Thais go to worship and seek spiritual guidance but they are also a focus for social and cultural activities and are often spectacular examples of Southeast Asian architecture. The largest and most impressive temple on Phuket is Wat Chalong located on the south of the island on Chao Fa West Road. It is well sign-posted.

Health Check Ups Most of us want to be fit and experts agree that eating sensibly, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep all play a part in achieving that goal. There are also the risk factors such as alcohol intake, smoking and prevalent obesity. Here in Phuket we may have more exposure to these than at home. Being on a tropical island with a large and vibrant party scene, it’s understandable that some of us do drink a little more alcohol than we should as well as adding a few more kilograms due to frequenting the island’s great restaurants. Having a regular, some say yearly, health check up makes good sense. We note that increasing numbers of patients are using Phuket’s hospitals for such health check ups. It’s becoming a very popular thing for tourists to do while they’re on holiday. In Phuket, most hospitals offer a quick and very reliable health service. The advantage of having these check ups done here is that you’re also usually given that excellent Thai service. The prices are extremely reasonable, often a fraction of the price paid in some western countries.

Check ups in Phuket hospitals come in many forms from basic packages to executive programs. The latter will include full laboratory and cardiovascular investigations, exercise stress tests and x-rays. Some programs are even more extensive, including CT scans and a complete dental examination. Most can be completed in a few hours and results are available within a day or two. Because most of Phuket’s better hospitals have all the facilities at the same location, the need to travel to different clinics, laboratories and x-ray facilities is avoided. The main aim of any check up is to detect illness at an early stage, or better still, prevent illness occurring in the first place. Having a regular check up also promotes wellness and facilitates prompt, expert and, hopefully, compassionate treatment of injuries and disease. It’s surprising how many conditions are picked up on routine medical check ups. Diabetes, breast lumps, elevated blood pressure, and skin cancers to name but a few. About 20% of people coming for health check ups have high blood pressure. This increases to more than 50% in adults over the age of 65 years. The role of high blood pressure in strokes and heart disease is very clear. Only half of the people with high blood pressure have had the condition diagnosed and it takes only minutes to check. Also, around 3% of adults are diabetic and, again, only half are aware that they have the condition.

www.windowonlifestyle.com

Useful info Health Check Ups

Health check ups also screen for cancers with procedures such as pap smears for cancer of the cervix and PSA testing for prostate cancer. Cholesterol levels can also be checked as high readings have also been linked to the risk of having a heart attack. With all of these tests and a range of hospitals and clinics providing them, how do we choose which is best for us?

Firstly, using cost and discounted prices as a guide to selecting a check up is not advisable. A cheap program has fewer tests. However, an expensive program can include a range of tests that you don’t need. For example, if you’re under 30 years of age, there’s little benefit of having an exercise stress test if you don’t have a history of heart disease. A better option is to learn what type of tests you need. If you don’t know what is advisable, do some research, or ask the hospitals and providers what they consider is best suited for you. Once you know what tests you actually need, shop around for the program that will match your requirement. If you can’t find a program, just request the tests that you want and make up your own personalised check up program. Having a regular health check up is inexpensive and makes good sense. Consider it as making an investment in your body’s future. Finding out the statue of your health now could save you lots of money later. It could also save your life.
