Langkawi Round the Island Race challenges participants The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) in Kuah, Langkawi is once again inviting participants to register for the Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2010 (RLIR 2010).

Wind speeds of between 8 - 20 knots are forecast for the period and participants can look forward to a challenging but unique 5-day sailing experience.

The RLIR 2010 is scheduled from 8th to 15th January 2010 with races from 1 - 15 January 2010 at the RLYC. The event will see several categories of racing namely the Racing class, IRC class, Sportsboats, Multihulls and Club Cruisers.

The secretariat will maintain the round-the-island race introduced last year due to its popularity among the participants. Apart from the usual windward/leeward courses, new and challenging courses are also being designed for RLIR 2010.

Weather conditions in Langkawi during the race are expected to be ideal for racing with lots of winds anticipated in January.

Langkawi’s ideal location in the northern, west coast of Malaysia and the warm, clear waters surrounding the legendary islands of Langkawi is an additional bonus for sailors and cruising yachtsmen. But the fun will not end with the races. As has been the practice every year, the RLIR 2010 organising team is going to great lengths to promise daily, fun-filled prize giving parties. A special promotion package is currently on offer for early bird registration where an entry fee of RM550 per team, inclusive of skipper will be charged for teams that register and make full payments before 30 October 2009. A RM100 fee will be charged for each additional crew member. The fees will cover the cost of berthing for 9 nights at the RLYC, water and electricity, transportation to and from official RLIR 2010 events and regatta souvenirs. Continued on page 20

Feature : Langkawi Round the Island Race Continued from page 18

The RLIR 2010 is the eighth regatta to be held by the RLYC consecutively since the inaugural event in 2003. Already part of the Asian Regatta Calendar, the event has for the last seven years been drawing regular boats as well as new participants who actively race in regional yacht circuits. Many of the multihulls, racing yachts and sports boats from around the globe and regular competitors of the RLIR are expected to return for next year’s race. Teams participating in the RLIR 2010 will compete for the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy (for participants of internationally registered yachts), the Commodore’s Challenge

Cup (for participants of club-registered cruisers), “LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy” (for participants of the IRC Class), Langkawi Sports Trophy (for participants in the Sports Boat Class) and the Malaysian Multihull Challenge Cup (for participants under the Multihulls category). This year, as a tribute to the Founder Chairman and 1st Commodore of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, Almarhum Tunku Tan Sri Abdullah, the RLIR introduced the “Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship” award for the best team, both on water and land in the RLIR 2009. The award will be given out again this year and represents the values for which the late Tunku stood for. The winner will be chosen from nominations and votes from all participating teams in the regatta. Police Lieutenant Nippon arranged for the new police station to be photographed by Helicam prior to the event. This was achieved by launching the Remote Controlled Helicam in the car park and hovering above the tall trees to get a clear view from the sky. Helicam photographer Khan composes his shots using a small monitor on the ground operating the onboard camera by radio control. Back at the Helicam office images are then retouched by Photoshop professionals. Feature: Superyachts Streaming Into Phuket!

Queen of the Andaman

Two superyachts moored in Phuket

Superyachts Streaming Into Phuket! Superyachts of various sizes have been visiting Phuket for over 15 years, and last year the island welcomed over 30 of these magnificent vessels! Five ‘superyachts in Surin Bay’

What attracts this elite international group and their elegant superyachts to Southeast Asia and Phuket? What is it about Phuket that is capturing the interest (and hearts) of superyacht owners and their captains and crews, bringing them back in increasing numbers… and how does this benefit Phuket? The first attraction, of course, is the outstanding beauty of the region and the range of fantastic moorings in the seas surrounding Phuket. A second major benefit of basing a superyacht here is that owners have access to reliable agents. This makes life a lot easier for professional yacht crews. An expert on superyachts in Phuket is British expat Gordon Fernandes, general manager of the local agent for Asia Pacific Superyachts. They’re also central charter agents for the elegant 41-metre sailing yacht Queen of Andaman. The company is among the world’s top agents in the maintenance of superyachts.

Gordon defines the agent’s mission, saying, “We’re here to provide the central link between the charter broker, the yacht owner and the yacht captain and can supply all provisions and services needed for the yacht. And with needs met, many often stay throughout November’s rainy season into December.” The affable GM believes superyacht owners and crew are finding that the paradise island of Phuket has what they’re looking for – natural beauty, on-shore entertainment to match and new frontiers to explore in the surrounding seas. He notes that many have decided life is so good in Phuket that they’ve purchased a condo or villa here. Charlie Dwyer, Gordon’s good friend and associate, believes the superyacht captains and crew appreciate the hospitable nature of Thai people. “What brings the owners and captains and crew back to Phuket is the culture and

people of Thailand with their welcoming smiles and gracious nature. You won’t find this in many other international destinations which superyachts visit,” he reports. Charlie is captain of the 36-metre superyacht, Yanneke Too and primary organiser, along with Gordon, of Asia Superyacht Rendezvous. Charlie is a lifelong, ardent American sailor, who earlier in his sailing life, worked with the ‘Kennedy clan’. He now lives on Koh Samui. In the last 20 years, he’s captained some of the most prestigious yachts in the world, cruising and racing around the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas, as well as in Asia. He adds that the Andaman Sea is an exciting alternative for major yacht owners, who want to get away from the Mediterranean and Caribbean crowds. “It’s also very safe. I’ve been through the Malacca Straits 27 times and never had an incident.”

Interior photos of the Queen of the Andaman

With reference to Phuket’s facilities, he notes, “When the big yachts initially began arriving in Phuket, facilities were limited. However, that has changed and the island can now boast of three marinas for superyachts to berth - with more marinas being built, including the amazing Jumeirah Private Island. Phuket is now a major international destination for yachts visiting the Indian Ocean and from here gives access to cruising areas such as Myanmar (Burma), the Andaman Islands and later in the season, Koh Samui and the Gulf of Siam.” He says, “Just one superyacht contributes significantly to the local economy wherever it berths. A superyacht’s monthly spend is comparable to a small hotel and can add $20,000 to $60,000 a month to the local economy! Yet, there’s little or no negative environmental impact as most superyachts produce their own water and power.

The owner, Captain and crew of Yanneke Too during the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous race 2008

Every year when the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous is held, 10 to 12 superyachts will contribute millions of baht to the island’s economy, as some superyachts stay for up to three months a year. The full potential of the industry hasn’t yet been reached, Charlie Dwyer says. “With a few slight changes in Thai laws, such as allowing chartering of foreign vessels in Thai waters and repealing the ‘spares for yachts in transit’ tax law, superyacht stays in Phuket would quadruple, yielding a high return to Phuket’s economy with a low impact on the environment,” Superyacht owners are among the wealthiest people in the world from the MD’s of ‘Fortune 500’ companies, to music and movie stars. During the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous held on the 17th and 18th of December and hosted by the sponsor resort, The Chedi, many famous yachts will be moored in Surin Bay. The event is a great attraction and invitation-only enclave for superyachts – an exclusive fun event bringing together the owners and crew of both motor and sailing yachts. The principle sponsor is the Dutch yachtbuilding and charter company, Feadship, a brand synonymous with class and quality. They’re best described as constructing the ‘Rolls Royce’ of private motor yachts. Boat contest 'Human Wind Power'

Boat Review

Boat Review: The Andaman Cabriolet Kind to the environment • Fitted with ‘Saniloo™ Onboard Sewage Treatment System’ via electrically operated macerator system • 4-stroke, high thrust Yamaha outboards giving best fuel economy and minimum pollution • Non-slip deck paint water-based, non-polluting • Anti-foul is the latest ICAN Nano technology, non-polluting • Solar panels fitted, reducing need to run engines to charge batteries

Racing The Andaman Cabriolet is not built as a racing yacht. But it was designed for those who like to combine the excitement of some racing with their cruising – and has proven it can be a class-winner in regional regattas against stiff competition.

Sail away for 10m Baht – no hidden extras

The Andaman Cabriolet – a proven winner! Five days after being hoisted by crane into the water – and just one day after her first sail – the new 38ft Andaman Cabriolet catamaran, Da Vinci Niña, took two first places in two races at Six Senses Phuket Raceweek, in a competitive class of seven multihulls. A fluke? No! She went on to win six races out of eight and took the Multihull title for the regatta. Not bad for her first date…

Uniquely, the Andaman Cabriolet comes with everything – and more – that you need to sail away. The standard price includes: • Autopilot, chart plotter, wind instruments, Tridata system, NMEA to Seatalk interface box (all Raymarine or equivalent) • 3.1m Hypalon RIB with 3HP outboard and davits to suit • Solar panels • Saniloo waste water treatment systems • Cockpit awning • Full set of safety equipment • Hand-held VHF radio (Price excludes VAT)

For more information contact: The Andaman Cabriolet Tel: +66 (0)81 797 9754 Website: www.catamaransailingphuket.com Email: [email protected]

Built in Phuket by Composite Catamarans, and targeted specifically at those who want a comfortable yet fast cruising catamaran to enjoy the tropical waters of Southeast Asia, the Andaman Cabriolet comes with an impressive design pedigree. Robin Chamberlain designed hulls used to build XS Ice Cat, the first catamaran ever to sail to Antarctica, have been combined in Australia by Stealth designer Alan Carwadine to build the super-light 39 ft racer/cruiser Cut Snake. That basic design combination has been modified in Phuket by Composite Catamarans to suit local tropical conditions and usage. The result is the Andaman Cabriolet. Significant features are:

Handling • Shorter rig (14m – Cut Snake has a 17m rig) makes for safer sailing for the less experienced • All lines go back to cockpit, making short-handed sailing easier. The Andaman Cabriolet can be sailed easily by a crew of two (for cruising) • An electro-hydraulic tilt outboard system means engines come clear of the water at the ‘push of a button’ • Dual engine controls immediately adjacent to the helm make manoeuvring as easy as can be

28

Cruising • Relocation of the mainsheet track to the targa above the saloon leaves room for seating for 8-10 in the cockpit alone, plus another 6 in the saloon. • The retractable ‘cabriolet’ roof over the saloon gives the choice of ‘inside’ or ‘outside’ relaxation • Two dining areas – the dining table can be relocated from the saloon to the cockpit, where there is ample seating for 6-8 to dine al fresco • A large fridge/freezer in the galley is complemented by two ample ice boxes in the cockpit. No shortage of cold drinks! • The galley ‘upstairs’ in the saloon area means nobody has to ‘hide’ below to prepare meals or drinks, at the same time retaining privacy in the sleeping accommodation • Accommodation comprises one large single berth (big enough for two children) and one double berth in each hull • Each hull is serviced by one hot-water shower/toilet aft, giving providing complete privacy for two family groups • Saloon seating easily converts into an extra double berth, while the dining table can still be used in the cockpit

Baan Rim Pa has become one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff, with teak floors and the constant swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket. Situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence seven years in succession.

Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant was the first seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained. The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the finest selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai delicacies to perfection. The first thing that you will notice are the friendly staff. The smiles, the attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.

LIM's Restaurant & NINE Lounge and Bar

Thai

LIM’s at Kalim Bay is an elegant custom-designed restaurant and a gallery of bold, very abstract art, built on a tropical hillside garden beside one of Phuket’s few natural rivers. Call it a hidden treasure. LIM’s has special offerings of generous portions that combine interesting textures and tastes. There’s a pomelo salad with shrimp that has a fresh, very clean taste. The slices of marinated duck breast rolled in cucumber are very light and match either the Australian or New Zealand red or white wines offered on the menu. Traditional, popular curries can be found on the menu with large king prawns, chicken or duck and there’s a section for vegetarians.

Baluchi is the only award winning Indian restaurant on the island, serving authentic Indian cuisine using original ingredients imported from India. Karon is open 15:00 to 23:30 except Saturdays.

Along with NINE Lounge and Bar, this is a restaurant to relax in, to take your time between courses and enjoy the company of your dinner companions. Until now, the pleasure of an evening at LIM’s, a favourite of Thai and expat residents, has spread mostly by discreet word of mouth as the chosen elegant hideaway for the discerning diner. Now the word is out.

Try a taste of the exotic in an intimate and warm atmosphere.

People Profile

Chanintat Pachantabutr Kan Eang@pier is one of the enduring icons of the good life in Phuket. For many years, the restaurant has served up sumptuous seafood cuisine in a dreamy seaside location. This month we talk to Chanintat Pachantabutr, a second-generation member of the founding family, who has an engaging manner and wisdom beyond his years. Are you originally from Phuket? Yes. Would you mind to telling us about your education? I completed my high school diploma at British International College in 2003 and then went on to obtain a bachelo’s degree from Trent University in Peterborough, Canada in 2007. How did the family business start? My father opened Kan Eang restaurant, now branded as Kan Eang@pier, Chalong Bay over 30 years ago. Both of my parents have been in the hospitality business for a significant amount of time now. They started Phuket Cabana on Patong Beach in 1977 which is now called Impiana Resort and Spa. In 2002, my father founded Patak Co., Ltd. our real estate development company, focusing on building residential communities in the Chalong area. Currently we are close to opening a new stylish townhome project, comprising 44 units, starting price from 2.5 to 5.0 million Baht. Could you tell me about your work in general? My time is mostly spent on the real estate projects. I coordinate with architects, contractors, and my team. After our morning briefing at Patak Villa’s Offices, I usually go straight to Kan Eang@pier to oversee the day’s preparations. I enjoy a little peace and quiet in the mornings, having a cup of coffee at our restaurant by the seaside, while I check my ‘to-do list’. Apart from the morning briefing, I also like to spend time surveying our construction sites, making sure that everything is going as planned and every detail is as it should be. As the day is winding down at Patak I usually go home, do some exercise and then head back to Kan Eang@pier again. What’s your view on how to be successful in business and life? You’ve always got to aim to grow the business. Stagnation is the beginning of failure. My philosophy is not to follow the herd, or try to keep up with what our competitors are doing. I prefer to analyse the situation, set realistic objectives and then concentrate on implementation. I believe that success in life involves finding a reasonable balance between work and recreation. Tell us about your style of leadership. Agree on a course of action with all concerned. After that it’s all about inspiration, motivation and encouragement. What is the distinctive attribute of your business? Patak Co., Ltd. has always held value as its highest priority, that is, value for money for our customers. This breeds loyalty. Whereabouts do you live in Phuket? I live in Patak Villa, our development, near the Chalong Circle. It’s very pleasant and convenient for traveling to both the Patak Villa and Kan Eang@pier offices. Where is your favourite place in Phuket? Kan Eang@pier. What do you like most about living in Phuket? This is where I was born and so of course, I love it because it’s my home. What's the worst thing about living here? Even if I reflect at length, I honestly can’t think of anything.

How old are you? 25. What is you marital status? I’m not married. Tell us something about your family? I'm the middle child. I’ve an older sister, May, and a younger brother, Mann. We have wonderful parents. What does the family like to do to relax? We like going out to sea and Coral Island. The guys love fishing and the girls like to relax on Coral Island’s Banana Beach. Could you tell us about your lifestyle? I enjoy working, partying, boating. What’s your favourite sport? I love football. But since I’m working most of the time, I’m trying to pick up golf instead. At the moment I’m still stuck on the golf driving range. How would you rate the quality of your life? Ten out of ten. Are you involved in any local charities, clubs or associations? I’m a member of the Phuket Real Estate Club. I like to ‘tamboon’ (offering alms to the monks) once in a while. I just came back from a fund-raising event to build a Buddhist crematorium in Phang Nga Province. Feature

Feature: Clean up

Photos from John Gray Sea Canoe

CLEAN UP I’m haunted that I sacrificed my most productive years on a hopeless cause I crawled into the ocean in 1945, frolicking the foamy seas with SCUBA, skim-boards, swim fins, kayaks, motorboats, water skis, sailboats, ships and submarines. 65 years ago, tuna schooled horizon to horizon and there wasn’t much marine rubbish. Plastics were not yet prevalent and Planet Earth hosted only one-third as many humans as today. So exploring Thailand in 1989 was a real shock. My parting vision of Hawai’i was standing where Honolulu’s business district hits the harbour, watching fish swimming ten metres down. I came here to bring environmental awareness to Asia, but I’m haunted that I sacrificed my most productive years on a hopeless cause. The Farang community gets it, but they aren’t plying the backwaters of the Bay, pulling broken glass and beer cans, disposable diapers, every plastic style imaginable and styrofoam from pellets to palettes out of the sea. Many Asians see the sea as a convenient garbage pit, but forget the consequences to marine life.

“I am very surprised with John Gray. He is not Thai people but he takes care of the Thai environment. When we arrived, I saw him cleaning garbage on the water’s surface. When we cleaned the garbage he always said ‘thank you’ to us, but I think we need to “thank you” him. I learned many things from the staff I cannot find in the classroom. I am very proud to tell my friends about this activity.” (Miss Nuttalinee) When Sea Canoe Guide Training came this year, I realised ‘eco’ isn’t on the Thai agenda. Most locals have never heard of ‘conservation’, ‘eco’ or ‘litter’, let alone understand or practice the concepts. The history of Phuket carries more weight than environment and conservation. After 8,000 large bags of rubbish collecting during ‘Hong By Starlight’ trips, I took matters into my own hands – literally. On my 64th birthday I gave myself a Phang Nga Bay Clean Up. I invited my Coastal Tourism Management class at Prince of Songkla University, Phuket. Dr. Rick Kramer added his students, and we ran for five very windy days, collecting 74 bags of rubbish. Hotels contributed staff (an extra expense) but no funds, so I spent B100,000 of my own money. I’ve been homeless ever since. The primary Phang Nga Clean Up goal is not about collecting 74 bags of rubbish, but creating awareness for local and worldwide marine rubbish and its impact, especially in marine parks. Our small effort is about creating an awareness and spirit of co-operation that benefits the overall environment of the park. We need to involve all national park stakeholders. It’s more than cosmetics. The surrounding villages, park staff, all tour operators and their customers must work together to keep Thailand’s national treasure clean, sustainable and hospitable to marine life.

46

www.windowonlifestyle.com

Although most of them come from Phuket and surrounding provinces, most students had never seen Phang Nga Bay, so each day included kayaking inside at least one cave/hong system. Students also received paddling training and were encouraged to paddle their own kayak in protected waters with a professional guide. We felt it was important for tourism students to see Thailand’s number one natural tourist attraction. Most major tour operators estimate the park hosts three to four million visitors a year, so it’s mandatory to give students a glimpse of this natural wonderland. We developed a guide team from local villages around the Bay, and the interaction between Thai university students and local villagers was almost instantaneous. The locals took the project to a beach near their village and the group collected 23 bags of rubbish in just one hour. The villagers learned the importance of conservation from Thai university students their own age. The clean-up was well worth it. We had two radio and four TV stations, and three print publications, two of them Thai language. Best of all,

“I am very proud that I am one to protect and clean up the sea and beach. Could you do the activity on the next semester?” (Miss Pattarasinee) “The trip is so cool! It is not my duty or your duty but it is a duty of everybody.” (Miss Chayanit) student comments made me realise the truth. I didn’t waste 20 years... It just took that long for the rubber to grip the road. Things are getting better. Over the summer, a plastic bag campaign led to Governor Wichai Phraisa-ngop supporting a 60% reduction in Phuket’s plastic bag consumption. Don’t complain about paying one baht for a bag – go buy a shopping bag and eliminate plastic altogether. Phantom bags don’t go into the sea. Phang Nga’s rubbish problem continues, so you are welcome to join this year’s Phang Nga Bay Clean-Up, scheduled for December 29 to 30. At peak-peak high season, the world visits Phuket and marine rubbish is a global issue that threatens humans as well as all marine life.

Spa

Lemongrass House

The Royal Spa

To visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

To experience The Royal Spa is to feel the true beauty of nature and reflect on the power of body, mind and spiritual connections.

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

The Royal Spa and Health Club In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fill the air, the being is enticed into a flowing stillness of body and mind. The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club offers a distinctly personal experience. Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound effect, stilling the mind and easing the body. Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff, and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure. All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly offers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Spa

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we offer 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

“People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced handblended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils. “Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Sukko Cultural Spa

Swasana Spa

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Whether you’re suffering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for a slice of tropical relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way to start.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but firmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat! Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and effective art of selfdefense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities. Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

Finding a spa in Patong is easy. But if you want first-class tropical treatments in a superb beachfront setting, your choice is very limited. Fortunately, the newly-opened Swasana Spa at Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort & Spa, provides the perfect answer. With two luxurious treatment rooms for couples, complete with private steam room and oversize twin Jacuzzi, one single treatment rooms and two beachfront Thai Massage rooms, Swasana Spa is unique in Patong – blending sublime treatments with a spectacular beachside location. Whether you’re suffering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for a slice of tropical relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way to start. My journey began with a Herbal Steam treatment in the aromatic steam room. Great for cleaning the pores and clearing the mind. Then out of the steam into the warm Jacuzzi for two, sipping a cool ginger tea while nature’s healing power eases away aches and stress. Already beginning to relax, I moved on to the Swasana Salt Scrub, the spa’s signature body treatment. My 2 therapists started with a gentle scrub, using tropical salt and tamarind to remove the dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling smooth and silky. Gearing up the sense of total relaxation, and gearing down even further my stress levels, I next experienced the signature massage – a combination of Lomi-Lomi and Aromatherapy techniques and principles. Lomi Lomi, also called ‘Loving Hands’, derives from ancient Polynesian massage using long continuous, flowing strokes to get deeply into tired muscles. Aromatherapy, using essential oils to stimulate or relax, is the perfect complement. While my therapists’ hands worked their magic on my body, I felt I had left all my worldly cares and tension behind.

By now in sensory heaven, the Sawasana angels prepared me for a Rejuvenating Anti-Stress Facial. A blend of facial massage with natural creams, this treatment cleansed and rejuvenated my skin and facial muscles. With all my senses heightened, I detected the fragrance of guava fruit – good enough to eat, but alas just one of the natural ingredients in the creams my therapist was using. This one is a must for anyone thinking of having a ‘face lift’!

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

The apex sphere symbolizes a sense of elation discovered only by balancing the first five - the unique experience of all senses elevated beyond expectations. Six Senses has created a body temple incorporating the principles of feng shui using fire and water, which delights beyond all expectations. The spa is open and spacious in design, utilising the beautiful outdoors for Asian style treatments and indoor treatment rooms for specialised and signature therapies. advisory issued following the bombings that rocked the Indonesian tourism industry a few years ago. Many Australians died in the Bali bombings. Comparisons between the two heavyweight destinations have been going on for years. In 2000, the travel magazine Hotel Asia Pacific reported that one reason for Bali’s lead at that time was the greater frequency of direct flights, compared to Phuket, and that Bali also had more top tier hotels.

Phuket’s relative remoteness is offset by the increase in direct flights by the major regional airlines over the last few years, and the growth of budget carriers like Thai Air Asia and Tiger Airways. We’ve also seen the entry of new, smaller competitors like Firefly (Malaysia) and the Phuket-based Happy Air. All-inall this adds up to a positive future for Phuket in its efforts to wean the Australian tourists from Bali.

THE BATTLE OF THE ISLANDS For many years tourist arrivals from Australia have been a key component of Phuket’s hotel industry, particularly as the antipodean winter coincides with the island’s low season. The problem is Bali! The recent announcement by Jetstar, the Australian-based, long haul budget airline, that it will increase flights from Sydney to Phuket to five rotations per week during the high season, is welcome news. In terms of tourist arrivals, Phuket has always lagged behind Bali, its major regional competitor for the Australian market. A 2009 Reader’s Choice Award in Conde Nast Traveler, the bible of the travel business, ranked the top islands in the Asia/Indian Ocean region as the Maldives, Bali and Phuket in that order.

62

What more can Phuket do to get ahead? More high-end accommodation is still needed, and there must be a concerted effort, to stop the tourist scams that blight tourist activities. However most importantly, Thailand needs to achieve political stability.

Research published in June this year showed that Australians continue to rate Phuket as their second choice, after Bali. A report by Bill Barnett, the Phuket based hotel and property consultant, said in May this year that Bali had profited from the recent Phuket airport closures. This when combined with the ongoing political turmoil in Bangkok, impacts on people’s decisions regarding their choice of holiday destination. In 2008, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that Australians were returning to Bali in record numbers despite a travel

www.windowonlifestyle.com

However, Phuket was ahead in infrastructure development. Over the last eight years, until the airport closures, Phuket appeared to be closing the gap with Bali, which was still subject to suspicion because of the unstable political and security situation. The airport closure in Phuket showed just how vulnerable the island economy is to outbreaks of political unrest. Indonesia, as a result, is now perceived as a safer and more stable country than has been the case in the past. Australians also like Bali because of its closeness, its good surfing and overall facilities.

If these things don’t happen Phuket will continue to attract fewer tourists, particularly from Australia during their winter, which is the Phuket ‘summer’ (low) season.

Snakes

Snakes The mere mention of snakes is enough to paralyse most of us with terror. This month, our medical expert has some sound advice on what to do if you encounter a snake and are unfortunate enough to be bitten. He even has a good word to say for the snake!

There are a few poisonous creatures in Phuket and the surrounding areas, but contrary to popular opinion, if you’re bitten by one of them it should not be fatal, provided you adhere to some basic first aid advice and seek appropriate medical care. The only real concern is for people who have an allergic reaction to bee stings and the like, who if bitten may develop a serious condition called anaphylaxis. For the rest of us, the sting of the spiders, scorpions and centipedes of Thailand can be mildly venomous, comparable in severity to a nasty bee sting. Severe localised pain and infections are the usual complications.

be contacted, and they’ll gladly come and catch the snake safely, for a small fee. Snake catchers are available from the Phuket Shooting Range in Chalong, The Andaman Cobra Show off Chao Fa East Road and the Snake Farm, near Simon Cabaret in Patong.

King Cobra

Snake bites on the other hand, can be fatal if not treated appropriately. The Cobra, King Cobra, Banded Krait, Russell's Viper, a few species of pit vipers and some types of sea snakes are the most troublesome. It’s worth mentioning however that most snake bites result from carelessness or plain bad luck. When snakes become aware of the proximity of humans, they try to flee as quickly as possible. Only a cornered or harassed snake will strike, so if you encounter one, keep your distance, don’t panic and provide an escape route for the snake. If a snake must be removed, for example when it’s in your home or around children’s play areas, the local snake show organisations should

The Cobra is the species which gives the most problems. They can grow to over five metres in length and when threatened, rear up. This is the cobra’s first line of defense. Their venom is a neurotoxin, which once injected following a bite, paralyses the muscles and the victim literally chokes, as the muscles that enable respiration are paralysed. Death can result, depending on the amount of venom that has been injected. However, snakes will not always inject venom when they strike. The most common result of a severe bite is not death, but localised tissue necrosis, where the skin, muscle and soft tissues around the bite site literally die, as is the case with gangrene. It isn’t uncommon that the affected parts, particularly fingers or toes may need to be amputated. If someone is bitten, cutting between the puncture marks and trying to suck the venom out is useless. This will only make the situation worse. Applying an arterial tourniquet is also ineffective and will do more harm than good. Trying to catch the snake for identification purposes is unnecessary and simply places people in more danger. Appropriate first aid is to apply a firm crepe or elastic bandage over the bite site and then completely cover the limb with the bandage about as tight as you’d strap a sprained ankle. Then immobilize the limb with a splint and immediately transfer the patient to hospital. If a large amount of venom has been injected, breathing problems may begin to occur so be prepared to give artificial respiration. At the hospital, the doctors will more than likely admit the patient for observation and if necessary, support respiration by placing the patient on a ventilator. It’s only in extreme cases that anti-venom is given, as it is very toxic and can cause severe side effects. Anti-venom, by the way, is readily available, and is manufactured by the snake farm in Bangkok, one of the world’s best anti-venom research facilities. Snakes and other biting creatures can look aggressive and frightening, but you shouldn’t be alarmed if you encounter them. It’s also not necessary to kill them, as they play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature. King Cobras actually live on other snakes and some snakes contribute to controlling the population of rats, mice and other rodents.
