HOW ABOUT THAT! The oldest club of any kind on Phuket, Phuket Yacht Club, turns 40 this year – an and is gearing up to celebrate in style at Royal Phuket Marina. Phuket Yacht Club is located in one of the safest and most idyllic bays on the island, Ao Yon on Cape Panwa. The club is reminiscent of days long gone, when expats would laze away a Sunday afternoon over cold beers and varied conversation, undisturbed by jet-skis, mass tourism or… well, anything for that matter. Of course, if lazing isn’t your thing, there is the sailing… The aim of the club – essentially a small boat/dinghy sailing club – is to introduce people to the sport of sailing and encourage others to participate in sailing, club racing and other water activities. The club offers recreational sailing, club racing, boat rental and family day barbeques – as well as racing lessons to children. In co-operation with Topper Sail, a whole range of sail training is also available for children as well as adults. Those ‘in the know’ when it comes to sailing say that people who start out in dinghies make absolutely the best sailors. The club’s community contributions include links with Sunshine Home in Koh Sirey; the club invites the Sunshine children to learn about sailing and participate in free lessons, racing and family days at the club. It is the club’s aim that these children have the opportunity to participate in Optimist racing events around Thailand – and possibly even further afield. The club’s history goes back 40 years and it’s recognised as the oldest yacht club in Thailand. It has always been based in Ao Yon and has always concentrated on teaching sailing and water sports to as many as possible from all walks of life. This year is the club’s 40th birthday and, on Saturday, November 21st from 5.30 pm, Skippers in Royal Phuket Marina

16

will be hosting a celebration of four decades of promoting sailing – a celebration that should appeal to all ages. Children’s entertainment, a buffet dinner, silent auctions, happy hour bar, music and raffle prizes from some of Phuket’s most prominent hotels and businesses – not to mention revelers from every walk of life and every part of the island – should make for a party worthy of the occasion. Apart from the celebratory nature of the party, the objective is to raise funds to promote junior and youth sailing on Phuket and to continue the work providing sailing opportunities to underprivileged children. Tickets are at 600 baht for adults and 150 baht for kids. Tickets are available on the day. Just show up and enjoy! If you’re interested in joining the Phuket Yacht Club, please contact call Katy Gooch on 085 2159185 or email [email protected] www.phuketyachtclub.info

Approaching this anchorage, keep well off the rocky point to the west and set your anchor on the muddy bottom in 4-6 metres. Holding is firm enough that this spot not only offers good overnight protection in the northeast monsoon, but may be used in lighter winds during the southwest season too. There is a small Muslim fishing village on stilts in the northwest corner of the bay. Approach by dinghy using the shallow creek on the west of the bay, and please observe the usual Muslim dress code.

This small island offers a great daytime anchorage in 8-10 metres off the sandy point to the northeast. Snorkelling and diving are best on the seaward edge of the fringing reef on the northeast side the island. There is also an all-tide access beach on this end of the island. Alternatively, good overnight anchorage can be found anywhere on the West Coast of Koh Yao Yai when the northeast monsoon prevails.

waste water into POWER Univanich Palm Oil uses Helicam to illustrate how the company can generate POWER from waste

Photos from www.helicam.asia

Univanich Palm Oil PCL, Thailand's leading palm oil plantation company, has set out to achieve new goals in renewable energy. Waste water from three Univanich crushing mills is now treated in Biogas Digesters (featured above). The black dome membrane captures methane biogas, which is produced by a natural process of organic digestion. Gas engine generators are powered by this methane to produce 5.6 Megawatts of electricity, which is sold to the Provincial Electricity Authority, sufficient to power several thousand homes around Krabi Province. John Clendon, Managing Director of Univanich explained that the company set-out to achieve three goals: • To prevent the release of methane biogas which is a potent greenhouse gas • To create Certified Emission Reductions or Carbon Credits under the UN Kyoto Protocol on climate change • To generate electricity from this renewable resource for sale to Thailand's national power grid

Since the success of these projects has attracted world-wide interest, John Clendon called upon Helicam Company to help illustrate Univanich presentations at international climate change and sustainability conferences. First on the list of required photographs Above photos: Power Station & John Clendon with Muo was the company's extensive oil palm plantations and nurseries featured below. The remote piloted helicopter was launched between palm trees to obtain panoramic views of the project areas. The ground base monitor allows Helicam photographer (Muo) to compose his shots while the helicopter is airborne. Once on the ground photographs were selected at the Univanich HQ for use in the company's conference papers, brochures and annual reports. The Folies Bergère, the Crazy Horse Saloon and the Windmill Theatre all became world-famous, based on the irresistible draw of pulchritude, pulsating rhythms and provocative costumes. Of course, they all also had that indefinable something, that ‘Je ne sais quoi’, which set them apart from, and above, the merely tawdry. Welcome to the new boys on the block, at:

SIMON CABARET they’ve got ‘Je ne sais quoi’ by the bucketful. Their website says in describing their top star, that, “She‘s more of a man than you’ll ever be, and even more of a woman.” As so often happens in this Land of Smiles, things aren’t always quite as they appear to be, at first sideways glance. Still don’t get it? OK, let me spell it out for you. All the cast, man and boy, are… well… men and boys. Baldly, they are ladyboys with long locks, lean loins, lingering looks and the longest legs you’ve ever dreamed of – Thailand’s unique, confusing contribution to the notion that the battle of the sexes is a two-cornered fight. However, don’t be put off. If you’re expecting male-voice choirs then you’re in for a disappointment. The Cabaret is situated a little way away from Soi Bangla, the Patong epicentre. The theatre is a big, windowless building that is easy to find, as it’s mainly decorated in a rather violent tint of violet. I met with Khun Richard, the general manager, in the bistro-style bar in front of the theatre, just before the show and asked how and when this phenomenally successful ‘show-business’ business, started out. Samrit and Virat Rouyrin (the man-and wife inspiration for it all) opened the first Simon Cabaret in Pattaya 20 years ago and it was an immediate hit, so when they moved to Phuket two years later and opened up shop in Patong, they were sure that they had a winning formula. Apparently, at this time, nobody else shared their confidence. The ‘Simon’ in Simon Cabaret, by the way, is the owner’s brother. Khun Virat still does all the choreography hands-on, so even though they now employ more than 200 people (of which 80 are performers), and have many other business interests, it’s still very much a family business. The theatre can seat 600 people and is equipped with the latest sound equipment, state-of-the-art lighting effects and smoke and aroma diffusers.

Feature : Simon Cabaret

The house lights dimmed. Then, with a sudden violent clash of cymbals, the stage came alive. This was a riot of coruscating colour, glamour, sequinned gowns and gloriously beautiful, scantily-clad girls and boys, all moving in a fascinating and hypnotic display of the purest symmetry. I really can’t remember most of the detail – I was overwhelmed by the immaculately crafted and captivating celebration of song and dance. I asked Richard if the girls (for simplicity’s sake, let’s ditch the ’nudge nudge, wink wink’ stuff ) were easy to work with. He admitted with a wry smile that, “they could be difficult!”, but was then quick to defend their professionalism, fitness and commitment. They practise for up to four hours a day, he said, and then there are two shows on top, each lasting for an hour-anda-quarter. It can take up to a year to develop some of the routines. Who wouldn’t be difficult? Intrigued, I immediately enquired if I might go backstage and was met with a polite but firm refusal. The media all want to do this he said, but it’s ‘verboten’. It would’ve been rude to insist, but… Whilst Richard and I’d been talking, the bar had become busy. It was a full house he was informed, so while he rushed off to arrange a ticket for me, I wandered around. The crowd was truly international, mostly families, from all corners of the world – a diversity which would be mirrored in the show to come. Vaudeville, it seems, is alive and well. Its allure and magnetism undulled by time, or national differences. I joined the expectant crowd and we found our seats, waiting a few brief minutes while strobes picked out gold and diamond shards on every sharply sculpted and silken surface. The violent violet house colour was now a subtle, shimmering lilac. The ceiling high above was a midnight universe of constantly moving, glittering gems – the charged sense of mounting excitement was tangible. Floor-to-ceiling loudspeakers only murmured, just hinting of their potential for future visceral crescendos.

It would spoil it for you if I were to attempt a blow-by-blow account of each routine. Quite beyond me. Omar Khayyám would have struggled. The costumes, scenery and drops were absolutely breathtaking and each curtain call was performed with mathematical precision from brassy Tina Turner numbers, to a haunting, ethereal and visually sublime Madame Butterfly refrain, that still lives with me. After the show, the cast came outside for a photo-op and I now hoped for a quick interview, but I’d no sooner got up-close-and-personal with Golf, Jeab, and Ai, and asked the key question, “How come your headdresses never fall off?”, when the occasion exploded into a mêlée of posers, poseuses, peacock plumage and Polaroid paparazzi. Reluctantly, I slipped away.

Getting to Simon Cabaret The cabaret is slightly away from the centre of town on Sirirach Road heading towards Karon. If you have your own transport, look out on the right, for an imposing figurehead of a provocatively dressed siren, above a large stainless steel water sculpture. Otherwise, all the taxi and tuk-tuk drivers know it. However, the easiest way is probably just to buy a ticket from your hotel tour desk and this includes complimentary transport to and from the theatre.

Around Phuket Baan Rim Pa

Thai

'Location, location, location' as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it. Baan Rim Pa has become one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff, with teak floors and the constant swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket. Situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence seven years in succession.

Patong Seafood

International

Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant was the first seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained. The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the finest selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai delicacies to perfection. The first thing that you will notice are the friendly staff. The smiles, the attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.

Indian

Baluchi is located in the heart of Patong and in Karon yet the relaxed atmosphere of both restaurants with soft background Indian music, creates a great ambience to relish a hearty meal with your family or to entertain your friends or clients. They take pride in using only authentic and fresh Indian spices, freshly ground in their kitchen and fresh, not frozen, meat. Homemade paneer (cottage cheese) and yoghurt, tandoori kebabs, naan and rotis, Mughlai curries and the best Indian long grain basmati rice dishes are just some of the specialties which their Indian master chef serves daily. One can taste the most mouth-watering tandoori kebabs in town, not to mention the variety of breads baked freshly in the tandoor or a delicious variety of prawn, chicken, mutton or vegetable biryani.

LIM's Restaurant & NINE Lounge and Bar

Thai

LIM’s at Kalim Bay is an elegant custom-designed restaurant and a gallery of bold, very abstract art, built on a tropical hillside garden beside one of Phuket’s few natural rivers. Call it a hidden treasure. LIM’s has special offerings of generous portions that combine interesting textures and tastes. There’s a pomelo salad with shrimp that has a fresh, very clean taste. The slices of marinated duck breast rolled in cucumber are very light and match either the Australian or New Zealand red or white wines offered on the menu. Traditional, popular curries can be found on the menu with large king prawns, chicken or duck and there’s a section for vegetarians.

Baluchi is the only award winning Indian restaurant on the island, serving authentic Indian cuisine using original ingredients imported from India. Karon is open 15:00 to 23:30 except Saturdays.

Along with NINE Lounge and Bar, this is a restaurant to relax in, to take your time between courses and enjoy the company of your dinner companions. Until now, the pleasure of an evening at LIM’s, a favourite of Thai and expat residents, has spread mostly by discreet word of mouth as the chosen elegant hideaway for the discerning diner. Now the word is out.

Salvatore’s

Italian

Looking for a break from the tourist spots on Phuket’s west coast – and the best pizza on the island? Follow the locals to Salvatore’s, a rustic 'trattoria' in Phuket Town. Salvatore offers traditional Italian cuisine using only the finest fresh ingredients, such as linguini alla bottarga, sea bass in salt crust, gnocchi with fresh sausage and pizza baked in a wood-burning oven. Other specialties are created with local shellfish, like mouth-watering lobster ravioli and fettucini with crab. Start with the bruschetta, with delicately skinned tomatoes and fresh herbs and beef carpaccio with olive oil. The food is prepared under the careful eye of the Sardinian executive chef and owner, Salvatore Cossu, a fixture on Phuket’s restaurant scene for his cooking skills. He personally shops for the vegetables and fish in local markets. The bread is baked daily; the pastas and sausages are home-made. Ask him about daily food specials as well as wine suggestions. Salvatore offers about 60 labels, including Sardinian wines. The service is warm and the ambience is friendly. But the real star is the food.

PCF Race Day: a day of splashing good fun! A fun-filled, action packed afternoon of events is promised on November 7 (easy to remember – just say to yourself, “7-Eleven”), when the Phuket Community Foundation launches its first Race Day at Canal Village and in the lagoon in front.

The fun starts at 2pm. Events will include dragon boat races, kayak races, a home-made raft race, a muay talay competition (boxing while perched on a horizontal pole) and a cardboard box race for kids (last one to sink is the winner). The big event of the afternoon will be the Great Phuket Rubber Duck Race with hundreds, possibly thousands, of little yellow rubber ducks racing down the canal at Canal Village (the technical staff of Laguna Phuket will make the water move specially for the occasion). Each duck will be numbered on its, er, south side, and the holders of tickets corresponding to the numbers of the first six ducks to cross the line will win big prizes totalling around 600,000 baht.

For more information and to enter any of the competitions, visit www.phuketcharity.org/raceday/. To buy tickets for the Great Phuket Rubber Duck Race, visit www.phuketcharity.org/duck/ – there you can buy your duck numbers online, or check out where you can buy duck numbers in Phuket. Facebook members have the chance to get – free – four more ducks for each one they buy. All proceeds from the event will go into the Phuket Community Foundation’s Grant Fund from which donations will be allocated to groups or organisations that have good ideas for improving Phuket. Grant applications will be accepted throughout December with the grants being ing made in January.

These prizes are: Four nights for two in a Banyan Tree spa pool villa with a romantic dinner, a round of golf and full spa treatment; a game fishing trip or luxury cruise for six from Wahoo; three nights for two at Amanpuri; a year’s family membership at the Phuket International Academy’s sports club (opening next April), an original sculpture from industrial artist John Underwood, and an Apple Mac laptop from Phuket International Academy.

There are many fine charities on Phuket doing excellent work in their chosen fields, but there are still many areas of need that are untouched. This is where the PCF plans to make a difference, by allocating funds to those who do not qualify for funding from charities or government agencies, whether it be poverty relief, education, culture or historical support, public safety or public health.

Other charities and community organisations will join in, setting up side stalls with village-fête-type games to keep everyone amused. For kids who know how to kick there will be a Beat the Goalie competition. Not easy – the guy in goal will be Martyn Ware who was once with Tottenham Hotspur and then with Queen’s Park Rangers.

The PCF has already been active in Phuket with its own projects, setting up toy libraries in four schools so far (with more to come), and improving road safety by replacing rear lights on motorcycles – so far ar about 1,000 replacements have been made, making 1,000 families safer on the roads at night.

There will also be a bouncy castle, face painting and balloon animals and a marquee with food and drinks at very reasonable prices. For those who want to get close to the races, Laguna’s fleet of ferries will be available. Across the road, there will be pony rides or kids can meet Laguna’s baby elephant.

Unit Cost Averaging Following on from last month, I’d like to tell you more about the benefits of unit cost averaging. According to Forbes magazine, Warren Buffet, the CEO of giant American investment fund Berkshire Hathaway, is the world’s second richest man. He’s made a fortune for himself and his fellow shareholders by investing in the world’s stock markets over many decades. The great stock market crash of 2008 began in September. Many people cringed when Buffet went back into the markets aggressively the following month, well before the markets bottomed in February this year. The point I’m trying to make is that if the world’s most successful investor of all time doesn’t know when the markets have bottomed, then what chance for the rest of us? It’s well-nigh impossible to second guess share price movements, and this is why I’m a keen advocate of unit cost averaging. The so-called drip-feeding approach, investing a little at a time, can be very beneficial whatever the markets are doing. It can make a big difference to the performance of a portfolio, whether it’s a lump sum investment or a regular savings plan generating a pot for retirement, school fees etc. This is how you can benefit from volatility and price fluctuations. Volatility is inherent in equity investing. It’s important for you to realise that market fluctuations are normal and you should therefore be aware of the risks. Fluctuating share prices obviously mean that the unit prices of funds will also fluctuate, thereby impacting on the value of your portfolio. This is where a strategy of regular investing or drip-feeding really pays off. The following example demonstrates what can happen when investing in periods of high volatility.

Key points • The effect of the fluctuating unit price has meant that Example B has ended up with a higher fund value than in a steadily increasing market. Even though the unit price is actually lower at the end of the example than it is at the start.

• To reap benefits from stock markets an investor need not necessarily have a large lump sum to invest. • Unit cost averaging holds obvious benefits for investors making regular savings/premiums.

• It is important to consider the risks associated with all types of investment, particularly those associated with equity markets. With the above in mind I think it appropriate to show again how the markets have performed over the recent past. As you can see there have been periods of high volatility. Unit cost averaging has worked during this time to great effect, and no doubt will do so again in the future.

Feature: Unit Cost Averaging The bigger picture The case for investing in equities Taking into account the effects of any short term volatility, the case for investing in equities remains as strong today as it has ever been for those investors with a long-term investment horizon. Over the last 25 years, an investment in the S&P 500 would have grown to almost 20 times its original value.

Spa

The Royal Spa To experience The Royal Spa is to feel the true beauty of nature and reflect on the power of body, mind and spiritual connections.

The Royal Spa and Health Club In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fill the air, the being is enticed into a flowing stillness of body and mind. The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club offers a distinctly personal experience. Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound effect, stilling the mind and easing the body. Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff, and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure. All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly offers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we offer 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Spa

Lemongrass House To visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products. Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced handblended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils. “Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on. A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be. I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but firmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat! Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and effective art of selfdefense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities. Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

Perfect for the active at heart and guaranteed to enliven and awaken, with Herbal Steam and Siam Aroma Therapy Massage. Finding a spa in Patong is easy. But if you want first-class tropical treatments in a superb beachfront setting, your choice is very limited. Fortunately, the newly-opened Swasana Spa at Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort & Spa, provides the perfect answer. With two luxurious treatment rooms for couples, complete with private steam room and oversize twin Jacuzzi, one single treatment rooms and two beachfront Thai Massage rooms, Swasana Spa is unique in Patong – blending sublime treatments with a spectacular beachside location. Whether you’re suffering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for a slice of tropical relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way to start. My journey began with a Herbal Steam treatment in the aromatic steam room. Great for cleaning the pores and clearing the mind. Then out of the steam into the warm Jacuzzi for two, sipping a cool ginger tea while nature’s healing power eases away aches and stress. Already beginning to relax, I moved on to the Swasana Salt Scrub, the spa’s signature body treatment. My 2 therapists started with a gentle scrub, using tropical salt and tamarind to remove the dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling smooth and silky. Gearing up the sense of total relaxation, and gearing down even further my stress levels, I next experienced the signature massage – a combination of Lomi-Lomi and Aromatherapy techniques and principles. Lomi Lomi, also called ‘Loving Hands’, derives from ancient Polynesian massage using long continuous, flowing strokes to get deeply into tired muscles. Aromatherapy, using essential oils to stimulate or relax, is the perfect complement. While my therapists’ hands worked their magic on my body, I felt I had left all my worldly cares and tension behind. Location Patong Beach

By now in sensory heaven, the Sawasana angels prepared me for a Rejuvenating Anti-Stress Facial. A blend of facial massage with natural creams, this treatment cleansed and rejuvenated my skin and facial muscles. With all my senses heightened, I detected the fragrance of guava fruit – good enough to eat, but alas just one of the natural ingredients in the creams my therapist was using. This one is a must for anyone thinking of having a ‘face lift’!

People Profile

Suphaporn Chittmittrapap This month we talk to a well-travelled, professionally-qualified business person. Her view of Phuket is well worth hearing. Do you come from Phuket? No, I’m from Bangkok. Why did you decide to set up your business in Phuket? Because of the potential for our business, but we were also attracted by the lifestyle. Could you tell us about your educational background? I’ve got a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Law, Chulalongkorn University, and a master’s degree in law from the U.S.A. What did you do before you started your present company? After graduation, I worked as a law consultant for a finance company for many years. This business, AheadAll, has been going for eight years. How did you start your business? When I returned to Thailand from abroad, I was struck by how many houses and businesses had unsightly security bars on the windows. I recalled that in the States they had none of this, depending rather on automatic alarm systems. I realised that there was a need for security equipment in Thailand that was not being met by the market and so we set out to address it. We target everything from small housing projects to large condominiums and hotels. Why did you call the company ‘AheadAll’? This company is all about using the latest technology and thinking to enhance people’s quality of life. The name, I think, conveys this concept. Our approach can be summarised as providing security, improving lifestyle, saving resources and serving the community. What is your responsibility for your business? I’m the owner and managing director. Who is your idol? My idol is my husband, who is the head of Thailand’s leading law firm. He holds to the highest principles and perceives his responsibility as serving and helping others. How would you describe your approach to business and managing others? First, you can’t expect others to be motivated if you don’t set a good example – a positive role model, if you like. At the same time, it’s important to keep an open mind and be flexible in your thinking. The dynamics of the market are constantly changing and if you don’t adapt, you fail. For example, one of the problems of doing business here is that there is a high and a low season. What works for one, doesn’t necessarily work for the other.

What is your hobby? As I’ve said, I’m passionate about music so I collect music boxes from all the places I have visited. I also practise meditation. What are your plans for the future? I suppose in due course I may retire from my active roles when I’m confident that my personnel are ready and able to act in an entrepreneurial fashion. They deserve the chance.

How do you solve problems and challenges in life and business? Well, business, and life as well I suppose, is all about solving problems. I always try to encourage my staff to think positively, “Every problem has a solution, if you’ll only search it out.” You must be happy in the work you’re doing. After all, you spend more of your waking time at work than at home. Finally, be cooperative and courteous to those around you. Always volunteer to help others whenever you can.

How is Phuket in your view? What do you like and dislike about the island? Phuket has beautiful beaches and mountains, great restaurants and a wonderful relaxed lifestyle. There was a time when I really enjoyed chilling out, in and around Patong. These days, however, I just don’t get the time. The biggest problem on the island is the lack of a decent public transportation service. If you don’t have a car or a motorcycle you can’t go anywhere. For the sake of the general population this problem really has to be addressed.

Could you tell us about your private life and your lifestyle? I’m 42 years old and have four children. The eldest is 16, and is studying in Canada. The other three attend an international school in Bangkok.

For more information contact:

Personally, I like to enjoy the best for everything. I love music and work. I couldn’t live without working. I work six days a week, so evenings and Sundays are devoted to my children. I do enjoy eating out in fine restaurants, and I also enjoy going to concerts. I usually travel abroad every year. On occasion, I’ll organise fund raising events for schools both in Bangkok and elsewhere.

Where do you stay in Phuket? We have an office on the By-Pass road, but I love to stay in hotels to see how things develop.

Loy Kratong Festival This event is one of the most beautiful and popular festivals in Thailand. It’s traditionally celebrated on the full moon night of the 12th month in the lunar calendar, which usually falls in November. This year it’s on the evening of the 2nd November. During the festival, Thai people will construct a small float from a section of banana tree trunk, decorate it with banana leaves and flowers and add a candle and three sticks of incense. It’s also common practise to include some nail clippings or a few strands of one’s hair, and a small sum of money. The candle and joss sticks are lit and the krathong is floated away on any open stretch of water. As we’re living on an island, this obviously is likely to be the sea. The belief is that this offering to the gods will take away all the bad luck of the past year and thus bring good fortune in the year to come. If you don’t have a banana tree conveniently to hand then many small shops will have ready-made offerings on sale for a few baht. It’s a seasonal cottage industry which is worth supporting. A word of caution, though. In past years, some constructors, in an effort to improve the buoyancy characteristics of their merchandise, took to using polystyrene for the hull. It’s obviously not very ecologically or politically correct to introduce lots of lumps of nonbiodegradable stuff into the seas around us, which, in due course, may return to pollute our beaches. The gods will not be amused. Take care. As we’ve said, the tides are supposed to carry all your bad luck away, so the further the krathong drifts the less likelihood there’s that ill fortune can come back to bite you. A hot tip, if you launch from the sea gypsies’ village in Rawai, with a 20 baht note on board, the village kids playing in the water will ensure that your craft carries a respectable distance. The gods help those who help themselves. The kids, of course, do the same with the 20 baht. As the sun sets and the moon rises above the horizon, the crowds start to gather on all the accessible beaches. Food stalls appear from nowhere and a carnival atmosphere prevails. For those who still need to buy a krathong, last minute stocks will be available. If you’re planning to get there by car it’s a good idea to arrive early, as parking can be a problem alongside the popular

Launching a khom loy.

beaches. On the bigger beaches there may also be organised events like beauty contests, fair games, firework displays and handicraft markets. (See our ‘What’s on’ section). Many people will also make paper lanterns (called khom loy in Thai) which climb into to the sky powered by the heated air from a candle wired inside. This illuminates the canopy at the same time. The sight of hundreds of these tiny flickering points of light climbing into the night sky makes for a delightfully romantic backdrop to the party. If you’re planning to do this, don’t forget to make a wish at the launch – this is the land where wishes come true. Trust me. The origin of the festival goes back to the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom around seven hundred years ago. A lady called lled Noppamas whose beauty was apparently legendary was the chief consort to the king at the time. As a tribute to her er beloved she created the first krathong in the shape of a lotus and presented it to him during the celebration of the festival. ival. His Majesty was so taken with the tribute that he ordered d that the practise should be perpetuated and a tradition on was born. The ladies of today who win the beauty contests will be crowned Miss Noppamas in memoryy of the originator of the custom. Enough history. Loy Krathong is a lighthearted celebration of the end of the monsoon rains and a great excuse for a party. Enjoy.

Useful info

Things to do in Phuket Maybe you have just come to Phuket to soak up the sun and relax on the island’s legendary beaches beaches, enjoy the endless choice of restaurants and shop in the local bazaars or in the first class department stores. These days though, we find that visitors are increasingly adventurous and for this reason we at ‘Shop WINDOW on Lifestyle’ have put together a selection of more exotic and unusual activities. Here's things to do in Phuket, the small island that reigns as the tourist capital of South Thailand.

Phuket Butterfly Garden: This is a place of endless educational possibilities. Here you can learn more about the miraculous miniature world of insects and butterflies. Relax in the garden where there are literally thousands of butterflies filling the air or busy seeking pollen among the tropical blooms. Located in Soi Paneung in the Sam Kong area, the garden is a 5-minute drive from Tesco Lotus. Take the road towards Phuket City and it is on the left hand side. There is a large sign indicating the turning. Entrance for children under 10 years is 150 baht, adults and kids over 10 years pay 300 baht. Open daily from 09:00 until 17:00 hours (last admission). For more information ring 0 7621 0861 or visit www.phuketbutterfly.com

View antique buildings: A hundred years ago, Phuket City had a prosperous economy based on tin mining and even back then was an international centre with a large expatriate community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called Sino-Portuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations which stretched back from the road. The interiors often include walled gardens and fountains and are beautifully furnished with antiques and Chinese inspired decorations. Rommanee Road is a fine example which has been fully restored. Visit Talang Road, Yaowarat Road and Dibuk Road where these old structures are home to a thriving latter-day community of shops and restaurants. The Provincial Hall, the Phuket Courthouse and the town branch of the Siam City Bank are further examples of architecture from the past.

Join the crowd at the weekend market: The most popular weekend market in Phuket Town is officially called Chao Fa Variety but is universally referred to by its Thai name Talad Tai Rot. There are also bewildering choices – everything from clothes to electronics. The market opens at 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays – when it is cooler. Parking can be a problem.

Blood Donations The start of the tourist season and the associated influx of visitors to Phuket results in an unfortunate trend – an increase in trauma, accidents and hospital admissions. Hospitals therefore face an increasing need for more supplies of the vital fluid of life, blood. Media announcements calling for urgent blood donations are not new in Phuket, and the hospitals and blood banks regularly ask for donations. It’s just that as the number of foreigners on the island increase, blood supplies, and particularly those blood groups that are rare, become scarce.

Thai donors because for every 1,000 donors, statistically, only three will donate Rh negative blood. That is clearly not enough; particularly when only about 1,000 Thais donate regularly, each month in Phuket.

Your blood is grouped and categorised by its makeup. All of us, Thai and foreigners have a blood group which is A, B, AB or O. This classification is then further defined as either positive or negative; more correctly termed Rh positive or Rh negative.

Foreigners have a much higher incidence of Rh negative blood, at around 16%. So for every 1,000 donors, blood banks would collect about 160 units of blood. The other side of the coin, of course, is that for every 100 foreign accident patients who need blood, 16 of them will require Rh negative blood. With only around 20 foreigners who donate blood regularly each month in Phuket, and the limited number of Rh negative blood collected from the Thai population, the hospitals never have enough stock of this type of blood.

Most Thais, that is 99.7% of the population, have Rh positive blood. It becomes immediately clear that the blood banks in Thailand therefore have extreme difficulty getting Rh negative blood from

Useful info Blood Donations

Facts • You can’t give blood from one person to another unless it’s a match. A person with Rh negative blood can’t receive Rh positive blood. • When people donate blood, they usually give one unit, around 500ml. • Many accident patients need many units of blood to survive; some as many as 10-15 units. • Rh negative blood is rare, very rare, not just in Phuket but all over Thailand. • We can’t get Rh negative blood from the Thai population, they don’t have it. • Only a very few foreign people who live in Phuket with Rh negative blood are regular donors. When a foreign patient is admitted to hospital and requires Rh negative blood, stocks can be exhausted quickly and urgent calls are then made through the media to obtain more.

What can, and is being done? Phuket International Hospital maintains a Blood Donors’ Database where we check people’s blood for free at the hospital and record these details, with their contact details. If people already know their blood group, they can enter the information themselves directly on to the website www.phuketinternationalhospital. com. The hospital then makes this database available to other hospitals and the blood bank in Phuket. If blood is then needed, people who are on the database are contacted to make a donation. This saves valuable time and is a life-saving community service. If you’re a foreign resident of Phuket, please get checked for free at the hospital, and become part of the database. If you know that you’re Rh negative, we really do need your details. Please remember that if you’re Rh negative and have an accident, you may need the blood of other donors. As a tourist or visitor to Phuket, you can also donate blood; it can save lives. What Is Code Sharing? People travelling by air these days sometimes find themselves without notification, on a flight with a different number, operated by a company other than that with which they’d booked … it’s called code sharing. This can often cause confusion and even anger, if passengers find themselves on an airline that they consider to be inferior to the one they had chosen. Let’s explain how this circumstance can come about. Code sharing originated in 1990 when Qantas Airways of Australia and American Airlines combined their services, between a number of US and Australian cities. This preceded the formation of airline alliances, which also use code sharing in a very comprehensive way. The first alliance, Star Alliance was started in 1997. Thai Airways International was one of the five founding members, and the only one from Asia. This was followed by Oneworld which included Qantas and American Airways and Skyteam led by KLM-Air France. Most airlines now also have code sharing agreements with other operators. The term ‘code’ is the identifier used in the flight schedule; generally the two character International Air Transport Association (IATA) airline designator code and a flight number.

For example, Flight XX123 operated by the airline XX, might also be sold by airline YY as YY456, and by airline ZZ as ZZ789. Airlines may participate in a code sharing arrangement for several reasons: 1. Connecting flights. This provides clearer routing for the customer allowing a customer to book travel from point A to C through point B under one carrier's code instead of a booking from point A to B under one code and from point B to C under another. 2. Flights from two airlines that fly the same route. This gives an apparent increase in the frequency of service on the route for both airlines. 3. Perceived service to unserved markets. This allows carriers who do not operate their own aircraft on a given route to gain exposure in the market through display of their flight numbers. Under a code sharing agreement, the airline that actually operates the flight (the one providing the ’plane, the crew and ground handling services) is called the operating carrier and the airlines that sell tickets for that flight but do not actually operate it are called marketing carriers. Most passengers and travel agents prefer flights which provide a direct connection and code sharing gives this impression. It can, however, be annoying for passengers as the Global Distribution Systems (Sabre, Amadeus, Galileo and Worldspan) often do not differentiate between direct flights and code sharing flights.
