President’s Message___________________________________________ Aloha! It’s been a busy month since we last talked. The Food Booth is the time when we get down to the serious business of fundraising for the chapter. It’s also the time when, by working together, we get to know each other and show what we can do. We’ve got 1 more weekend to go and then we’re done. You can help your chapter by not only coming out during those final days, but also by showing up next Monday. Why? Because that’s when we break down the booth and store the equipment away for another year.
Racing & Shaving What’s next? We’ve got another Signature Project and, like all our Signature Events, it’s a good one! It’s the annual Dragon Boat Festival. We need your help in running the Dragon Boat Races, everything from timekeepers to check-in people to the general manpower we always require. We’re also running a Shave Ice Booth to both fundraise and do some membership recruitment. We’ll need 4 or 5 members at all times in the booth – let us know as soon as possible about when you can help. The Races are on Saturday, June 27 & Sunday, June 28. The Festival, though, will run Friday, June 26 / Saturday, June 27 / & Sunday, June 28. See Page 4 for details on the dates and times.
Dinner, Anyone? Come out with us to SabaiDee Thai Restaurant on Tuesday, June 17 for some after work grindz. We’re meeting up at 5:30PM for their discount dinnertime. SabaiDee has gotten great reviews, so let’s find out if the rumors are true.
Activating! Now that we’re almost done with the 1st half of the year, it’s time for some changes. The Jaycees, especially the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees, are about creating leaders and helping members to meet challenges that produce maximum personal growth in the minimum amount of time. That means we’ll be getting members more involved in the planning and executing of all projects. If you’re interested in a role, such as being on the Healthy Baby Contest Committee, contact any HCJ Board member. We want your help and we want you to get the most out of your membership. Check out Page 6 for the full schedule on what’s coming up. See you at the projects – Your Friend, Jonathan Cook 58h President, “Forging New Leaders” Phone: 342-2737 / Email:

50th State Fair Food Booth
Where has the chapter been all this month? Down at the Fair, servin’ grindz to hungry people. If you don’t know about the Food Booth, then you must be new around here! Every year HCJ works the Booth in order to raise funds for our projects. It’s a big challenge, but we’ve always risen to it. It’s like throwing up a restaurant, running it for 5 weeks and then packing it away until the next summer comes. Things kicked off well with our 1st Prep Night, with lots of members coming down from the ‘Iron Man’ of Food Booth-ery, Jason Tomita, to spanking new HCJ member Nicholas Chang and everybody in between. Those Jaycees with less than a year under their belts were introduced to the pleasures of seasoning meat, running to the reefer and wrapping forks in napkins. It was like seeing kids on Christmas morning. Opening Day saw us once again serving up a full menu including: -
Spaghetti Chicken (fried, patty and nugget varieties) Loco Moco Chili Clam Chowder Steak Pork Chops Spring Rolls & even Terence Young’s ‘Stew Surprise’ It’s a surprise because you never know how it’s gonna taste.
Our team, including great friends from the Hawaii Kai, Rising Phoenix & Filipino chapters, have been pitching in to make sure everything goes well and the customers are happy. It’s a good feeling to see the teamwork and learning going on. One example - Longtime member Rodney Miyasato gave this writer a crash course in cooking eggs. Result: Loco Moco orders were filled no matter what style eggs were ordered. That’s what this organization is all about, meeting challenges and passing the knowledge. We’ve also been fortunate to once again have the tested leadership of people like Glen & Terence Young, Paul Chun and Kelfred Chang at the Booth. With management like that, we’re in good hands. The Food Booth is often hard work, but it’s also the place where HCJers and fellow Jaycees get to know each other and get to see the best in one another. There’s 1 more week to go. If you want to accelerate the ‘getting acquainted’ process, the Food Booth is the time and place to do it. There’s nothing like pulling together to create those solid bonds you’ll carry into the years ahead.
* Remember – we’ve got just one more weekend to go. Check the schedule on the cover and come on down!
